Yow’s preference and Paul Hewitt’s departure from Georgia Tech

Given her druthers, you will see Debbie Yow attempt to find ways to prolong the announcement of Coach Lowe’s imminent departure from NC State for as long as she can. As we alluded to in this conversation, NC State would like as little time – and therefore media attention -to exist between Lowe’s ‘official’ departure and the hiring of the next coach.

The prospective coaches that comprise the current ‘list’ that serve as Yow’s ‘top tier’ will all be playing basketball at least through next weekend. So, it will be of benefit for all potential parties to create as little of attention to each other as possible.

At this point, we don’t have any reason to believe that Georgia Tech’s job opening will have an impact on ours or our potential candidate pool. That could change. We will let you know.

While you are here…we think you would enjoy reading this entry and also spending some valuable time on our vibrant message forums.

Paul Hewitt has been let go at Georgia Tech.

According to sources, the Yellow Jackets coach – who has spent the past 11 years at the school – was informed of the decision this morning.

Hewitt finished his career with a 190-162 mark and led Georgia Tech to the national championship game back in 2004.

The Yellow Jackets were 13-18 overall this past season and 5-11 in ACC play. They lost to Virginia Tech in the first round of the league tournament.

Hewitt had an opportunity to take the St. John’s job last offseason, but turned it down to remain at Georgia Tech.

There was some thought that Hewitt would be retained since he is owed $7.2 million and the school is rebuilding Alexander Memorial Coliseum. However, athletic director Dan Radekovich decided to part ways with Hewitt – who signed a contract after getting to the national title game that included an automatic rollover.

As for Sean Miller, if this happened – what would this do for Debbie Yow’s legacy?

Assuming Sean’s success continues at NC State (no reason to doubt after Xavier and AZ’s quick turnaround), Yow may become the most beloved Wolfpacker in recent memory.

I try not to let sports define my person (my success in life is not defined in anyway shape or form by the Pack, some Carolina fans on the other hand…), but I may shed a tear if we get Miller.

If she lands Sean Miller, she will rightly be viewed as a hero and one of the best ADs in the nation. She is taking this task head on and hands-on. Love how she’s taking ownership of this hire.

And for the love of God, please don’t say “source??”

    PS – Hold that tiger!!!

Awhile back, I recall hearing the name Randy Bennett being tossed around. I would consider him a great candidate as well with the only question being whether or not he’s a west coast only kind of guy. That and the fact that he kind of resembles Herb in appearance…

I’d love to hold that tiger…if not that, I’d go hunting bear.

At a WPC (mostly) breakfast yesterday in Greensboro, DY said/implied (I don’t recall her precise words) that, barring an NIT appearance (very unlikely), she would meet with SL in the Mon-Wed period next week and that a decision would be made in that time period. I may have misunderstood her, but I would be surprised if we don’t hear about the decision in that time period. As for the next coach, I have heard nothing and have not asked any of those who may have that information. I am curious, of course, but I prefer secrecy at this stage. We will all know soon enough.

“Can he – with tainted “blue blood” – sell out to (and for) STATE?”

Bobby Knight played for Ohio State. He coached against his alma matter, twice a year, for a very very long time. It didn’t seem to make a difference to him.

Roy Williams beat Dean Smith, in the Final Four, about 20 years ago.

I just haven’t seen any coaches, who won’t embrace the head coaching job they’ve been hired to do.

I just don’t see it making a difference.

“At least DY showed some very non-LF smarts in setting herself up well for buying a little time herself with her “wait until the end of the season, look at each game, sit down with Sid, etc etc etc” overview.”

The difference between the Herb’s departure and what’s happening now is Herb quit, in a very sudden and unanticipated manner. For whatever reason, he didn’t inform Lee Fowler – his biggest supporter – of the decision ahead of time. Seems like Lee found out like the rest of us.

Probably the one thing I will really resent Sendek for doing is the way he left. I can understand not wanting to tell your employer you’re quitting, until you have another job lined up. But when you have the job lined up and the ink’s dried on the new offer, you should give the old employer a bit of notice, especially if your immediate boss went to bat for you on several occasions.

I noticed K let Collins do the sideline talk last night after halftime. I think he is probably being groomed for K’s job someday. Also, for him to come to NCSU reminds me too much of the Phil Ford talk last time around. Let’s get our own guy.

  10. wolfpackdawg 03/12/2011 at 5:51 PM #

I wonder if Phil Ford will be interested this time around?

  11. Wulfpack 03/12/2011 at 6:05 PM #

K has been letting Collins handle all in-game interviews for some time now. K does not believe in these interviews as he has said his focus is only on his team during competition. So yes, Collins has been well groomed to handle these questions.

He and Wojo have also sustained the program during the past spring and summers with K’s obligations with Team USA. I don’t know if he is ready yet, or if he’d ever consider leaving prior to K’s retirement. You gotta admit he has a pretty sweet gig.

I hope we hear nothing until the press conference where we see Sean Miller standing beside a smiling Debbie Yow.

By the way, does anyone know if Ryan Kelly is Greg Fishel’s illegetimate son?

Gene said: “I just haven’t seen any coaches, who won’t embrace the head coaching job they’ve been hired to do.”

Um…I can think of at least ONE head coach that didn’t really embrace the tradition of the job he held…but I think he’s supposed to remain nameless around here…

  14. kwfpack 03/12/2011 at 6:58 PM #

Is there any chance Lowe talks Yow into another year when they meet the first of the week?

    SFN: No

  15. tuckerdorm1983 03/12/2011 at 7:23 PM #

and I guess CJ Leslie will go pro. But in what sport? Cause it sure ain’t basketball (no defense, no shot, no free throw shooting and no post play). Otherwise he is a fine player. In all honesty maybe in time he can develop his skills to match his awesome athletic ability.

Many coaches are getting canned,I don’t see how keeping Sid around is helping anything. Unless a deal is already done the longer we wait the worse the pool is. Look in the past 2 years the potential coaches we let slip away.

  17. MattN 03/12/2011 at 8:17 PM #

Miller won’t say no, as long as we come up with ~$3M/year.

Which we can. We DO have money….

  18. 98st8 03/12/2011 at 8:19 PM #

StateFans… can you guys give some information about how using an intermediary works? I know we won’t officially ask permission to speak to a coach until we know that said coach will say yes when asked.

So, do we have people like Chris Corchiani and others that just know who to contact behind the scenes? Do coaches have this secret channel of contact in which other schools can gauge interest?

I mention Corchiani because I think he had a connection to Rick Barnes the first time around. Do we have channels to Donovan, Dixon, Wright, Marshall… others?

    Just curious… thanks!

^ One can never discount the possibility that NC State will screw the pooch. It’s happened too many times to be completely discounted as impossible.

That being said, I’m actually pretty confident that DY has already zeroed in on her target(s) and that the dance has begun long ago. Whether the deal is done yet I don’t know, but I’d be surprised if it’s not in the final stages in one form or another. Might be currently on hold due to end of season conference tournaments (although in this day when coaches have agents, who knows?), etc., but I doubt she’s going into a “review” meeting with Sid without a plan already in place, and likely already having been at least partially executed.

I agree with something I heard earlier on here regarding BIG name coaches and their family/situation. I think we have a very real chance at a star coach IF AND ONLY IF that coach wants to call Raleigh home. He may not like his current gig because of location, family wants to move, closer to family, better AD situation etc. We can pay big money but their schools would match or beat it. However, if the coach is ready to leave and likes the area……I think we have a darn good chance at Miller, Barnes etc. If it is money only, then we don’t stand a snowballs chance at the “Bigs”.

Maybe Miller and his family love the Arizona job but hate the area? Just saying.

  21. gtspack 03/12/2011 at 8:33 PM #

No fit could be better than having Sean for a head coach and bringing Archie on as an assistant and a fall back as ShootingGuard mentioned. DY will come out as a hero as should Sid. Sid has left a clean program with a ton of talent. I think we will look back at Sid as we do Amato now, he was an essential step to get to the next level.

  22. packpride_ie94 03/12/2011 at 9:29 PM #

Once you get past the obvious big names, there are truly only a handful of coaches out there that are getting the job done on a consistent basis.

So unless you’re willing and able to pony up 2.5M+ AND/OR you get lucky and find the big name who really likes your area/situation, then every program that is in the hunt is in competition for the same handful of coaches.

So we need to be keeping close tabs on the goings-on with GT and other programs. Hoping DY and team are all over it because the last in line will be left taking risks on coaches with promise but not a consistent track record for success. And we badly need this hire to come with as little risk as possible.

    Men, this is humorous.

The topic is Yow’s strategy and then Hewitt’s firing, which shows GT lack of strategy.

So far we should be happy, the signs indicate what we thought, that Yow is smart. If she fires Sidney on Wednesday or Thurs with no immediate announcement of the hire I would be worried about Yow. You never want an empty chair. It is bad for your players and for recruiting. And it shows you had no plan, which is not acceptable.

The only reason I can think of why you would fire a catch without having the new coach named is . . . well . . . hmmmm. Check the GT websites tomorrow morning, GT may announce their new coach then, or at least by Monday morning. If not, they are in f-ing trouble, because it shows they had no plan. Or their plan was, OMG, we need to start now and get ahead of the other programs. WTF, I don’t get that. And I do think the GT job is good, I don’t agree that ATL is a pro sports town, that’s crap. It is actually a college football town, all those SEC grads there. I think GT can be good with the right coach. Hewitt had awesome talent, he just sux as a coach. Hewitt could have won an NCAA.

Collins, who the heck is bringing that up, Chris Collins himself? Hey Chris, get off the board. I’m laughing out loud, and I like Chris Collins . . . and Wojo as well. Chris, either stay with K and hope to be his Guthridge, or go take a job at a mid-major and show people what you got. Because as you know, Amaker and Dawkins hurt your stock. K wannabes ain’t doing well (sure, Amaker has “Harvard” in good shape). I actually think Collins could be good, but I’d pay him 1/5 of the target, b/c he hasn’t proved himself yet. Same for Wojo. Wojo should go to Utah. A great debate for the media is who will succeed K? As of now nobody, no Roy’s out there.

Be patience Pack Nation. It is a great thing if the firing of Lowe takes a long time! Weeks.

  24. blpack 03/12/2011 at 11:05 PM #

1998 seems to have a good feel for the pace of things. It sounds like we are in good shape, but need to keep moving forward as the days go by and teams seasons come to an end.

  25. NCSU84 03/12/2011 at 11:07 PM #

What is all this Chris Collins talk? He is an assistant coach with no head coaching experience. Um..how did that Sidney Lowe experiment work out? Haven’t we learned our lesson about “experiments”? Do we really want to repeat the same mistake all over again? Come on Man!!
