WRAL: NC State interested in VCU’s Smart

NC State interested in Shaka Smart

NC State has an eye on VCU head coach Shaka Smart.
Multiple sources told WRAL on Saturday that Smart is a coach of interest for NC State. He was recently contacted by either the Parker search firm or by an NC State intermidiary to gauge his interest in coaching the Wolfpack.

NC State director of athletics Debbie Yow would not comment on the search.

The longer VCU wins, the longer it will be before Smart turns his attention to his future. VCU beat Florida State to advance to the Southwest region finals against Kansas. That’s the deepest NCAA run in VCU school history.

Multiple schools have an interest in hiring Smart. The 33-year old coach is in his second year at VCU, his first head coaching position. He has a 53-20 record at VCU finishing fourth and fifth in the Colonial Conference. The Rams received an at-large bid to this year’s NCAA tournament after losing to Old Dominion in the Colonial tournament finals.

Smart’s salary at VCU is a reported $325,000 but school officials are already working on a new contract that would boost his salary significantly.

Prior to VCU, Smart was an assistant for Billy Donovan at Florida. He has also been an assistant at Clemson, Akron and Dayton.

Smart played point guard at Kenyon College in Ohio where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history.

One thing that SFN would like to note — NC State could be ‘interested’ in, and gathering information on, A LOT a lot of coaches. Since Debbie Yow has the NC State side buttoned up tighter than a [insert whimsical quip here], we only know of coaches getting ‘interest’ if those coaches (or their representatives) leak information.

Additionally, even if information gets leaked from the coaches’ side doesn’t mean that information is accurate. For example, in NC State’s last coaching search in 2006, LSU’s John Brady tried to use the media to attach himself to the search to maneuver for a raise &/or contract extension. It was bush-league…and, it was fun to see him ultimately get fired. Of course, there are other coaches who pull this type of stuff all of the time.

We are not saying that is what is happening with Smart right now…but, I’m not convinced that just because this information has trickled into the public that Smart has catapulted to the top of any legitimate list of Yow’s.

As evidenced by some of the conversation in this thread, most Wolfpackers appear to be more attracted to Smart’s predecessor at VCU, Anthony Grant (who is now at Alabama). You may remember that Grant had been identified/hired by Florida to replace Billy Donovan a few years ago when Donovan did had his change of heart with the Orlando Magic.

^^It’s news to me if we’re being publicly rejected again.

Time to generate hits I guess.

Sorry for being off topic. If Hardin said that Roy had a steak and baked potato last night for dinner, then I would believe him. However, don’t believe he has a source at State other than Highway Patrolman that controls the parking at games. Hardin is a UNX tool.

Ignore Ed Hardin of the News & Record. He is a grade A ass that only see carolina blue. He knows nothing and has never had anything good to say about NC State.

for the record.. concerning smart. he looks like a sharp coach.. since his little streak started i felt he was the next gT coach!?! i just have a feeling that we are thinking a little bigger than gT and the other programs. smart can coach, know he has very little experience doing so, but he has dealt out a few whippings over the past two weeks that shouldn’t go unnoticed!! i wouldn’t be thrilled with this hire.. but it would be okay.. i guess. but before the tourney, i didn’t know who he was.. here’s one of my random questions.. how did he lose his conference tourney if his team is playing so well?? i know duke won ours but lost.. i still have this q??

FWIW, Bennett at St. Mary’s did not win the WAC this year. They finished first in the regular season, but like the ACC, it is their conference champ who get’s the automatic bid. That’s why they aren’t in the NCAA tourney this year.

That being said, there are choices I’d hate a lot more than Bennett.

Early on I though we had a shot at SM. One of keys was that AZ is hell in the summer. Not an easy place to love. However, with success, good position in conference, young team felt he was a long shot. As search went on, I did not want Barnes. I personally think Smart is having a great run, however don’t want to hire a great run.

I desperately want disipline, hustle and defense. Hope DY is felling the same thing.

Adventuroo said “BTW, he was 34 when he came to NCSU, compared to SS being 33…and Brad Stevens and Mark Few are also about the same age.”

Not even close. Few is 49; Stevens is 34.

  9. albunde6 03/27/2011 at 2:05 PM #

Don’t think I would compare Stevens to any of the other candidates. “you have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting.” I’ll bet UNX and Duke have had private conversations with Stevens.

Hardin doesn’t know anything. He even says he doesn’t know any more than we do. That didn’t stop him from splashing a headline that the search isn’t secret anymore.

    >>>I hate to say it but it is happening again. Everyone is turning us down. I dont feel even Smart would want this job. I feel we will get some nobody and hope for the best and we will be doing this all over again in 5 years. Even my son who is a big state fan for all of his 16 years of life has said, Dad nobody want to coach at state to much pressure for one person to handle. I am starting to belive it. Hell I have hoped for 18 years whats another 18 anyway.<<<

    RaWolf,

This is what happened. Most would say what is the harm in feeling a "big name" coach out to see if they are interested in our job, if not, we just go to the next one. And when we do, and they elected to stay at their current jobs, the sky is falling. We got "rejected"! It happened almost every time, at every school, but board monkeys never learned. Everything is a "rejection". A true "rejection" is when you say no to a job and stay unemployed. But most fans live on ego and instant gratification. That is why every AD at every school, don't know about DY, goes through this sort of path every time when the searching for a coach. They would go for the "big names" first. Michigan football? Check. Tennessee football? Check. Notre Dame football (pre-Kelley)? Check. Alabama football (pre-Saban)? Check. Auburn football? Check. Auburn ended hiring a guy with two years head coaching experience with a losing records.

Big schools almost always afraid to go with no name, young up and coming coaches anymore in this time of board monkeys, wweb days and age. They would always want to make that splash. That exciting first news conference. It is like when decide to get married, they only women on their wish list are married ones. You know, the proven wives. If they can't marry someone else wife, then they can't be happy. And when the married women decided to stay with their current marriages, egos are bruised. Feelings of rejection run rampant. What board monkeys don't get is that they set themselves up for that. They deserve that feelings. The Donovans, Millers, Grants, K's, Roys, Valvano's, Turgeon's,… of world was hired by big schools when they were "no names", unproven wives.

Don't be a coward and take a short cut that, proven time a time again, left you alone at the alter, with well dressed family members and relatives looking stunned and embarassed. Do your own due diligence. Look for hungry, young capable coach, give him chance. The most long lasting successful programs are built with young coach whose schools took a chance on hiring him and giving him the opportunity to grow. That is how you build loyalty and success. Stop lusting after others's wives.

VCU up 14 on Kansas. Wow.

  13. NCSUPackfan 03/27/2011 at 2:41 PM #

It is amazing what some of you say about every single candidate that is brought up. We complained all season about lack of effort, no offense movement, no defense intensity. I am sitting here watching the VCU/Kansas game and that is what these teams have. Even the announcers asked “where did VCU get this energy” after going into overtime the other night.

We need to stop looking at experience as the major measuring stick and see what the coaches get out of their players.

Yes VCU was 4th in their conference but let’s look at how they play. They never lost by many points, most of their losses were close. They play hard, up tempo, intensity on every person’s face.

    VCU 36 Kansas 19

“Sorry, all that is complete nonsense. Yes, the “next great coach” will almost always be an unknown coming up the ranks. I suggest looking at the coaches that fail instead of the ones that succeed. I may change your perspective on what we should be doing and why we are going about our search the way we are.”

Unless you are in a position that UNC-Ch was, when they got Roy Williams to leave Kansas, I don’t think very many programs have the luxury to try and go for a “sure thing”.*

There are very few of those coaches out there. Rick Pitino? He made one Final Four in 10 years at Louisville and a couple of Elite 8 runs. Otherwise he hasn’t done much. Calipari? He went to a couple of Final Fours, with mid-majors, but he’s never won it all.

Every great program, at some point, got built up by hiring a hot shot “kid”, who put the program on the map. Frank McGuire had success at UNC-Ch. Dean Smith turned them into a national powerhouse. John Wooden made UCLA a “destination school” for coaches. Mike Krzyzewski has probably done the same for Duke. John Calhoun turned UConn into a basketball powerhouse and they had very little going for their basketball program, before he got there.

If we want to return to glory, we need to hire a Hall of Fame caliber head coach and the odds are the ones, who have that potential are in the mid-major ranks or an assistant on another school’s bench.

I’d much rather take a risk than get a coach, whose ceiling is no better than Herb’s was or is only marginally better.

*Even Roy had the big question mark over his head, when he came to UNC, because he got to several Final Fours, at Kansas, and a couple of National Title appearances, but was never able to win it all.

oh oh, we have second thoughts on shaka smart. lol. this might change if ku comes back and win. coaching is a game by game referendum. k better work on his resume. lol.

  16. Wufpacker 03/27/2011 at 3:32 PM #

Today’s game proves nothing. Smart could still be a flash in the pan or he could be the real deal. No one knows….yet.

That’s why a lot of folks want a bit better indication of a coach’s long term “trending” with a coach that has already succeeded as a mid major, but are now a pretty well known commodity at the top level as well.

Whether or not that happens is yet to be seen, of course.

My God, that Hardin piece was worthless. The title is that it’s not a secret anymore – but the content revealed nothing but the fact that no one has any f’ing idea about what’s going on. And he go to write 1000 words about it, from perusing message boards and blogs. Can I please have that job???

  18. bmamba101 03/27/2011 at 7:32 PM #

If we hire the Sidney Lowe’s VCC twin I’ll never pull for State to even win a field hockey game!!

  19. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 10:34 PM #

^ha. i don’t know if i would go that far.. but i feel almost the same way. get one of the big dawgs! they didn’t have much of a question mark over roy at unx.. he turned them down and two or however many years later came back to his roots.. i’d say he’s done fairly well.. but with all the risk or question mark there.. really they knew he’d keep them going to final fours? sound like any of our possible coaches? maybe a rick barnes? i totally agree with people wanting to see our boys get out there and compete.. there is nothing wrong with going young or old.. i’d say the lesser risk would be with an a proven winner/builder..

..the hire can’t come soon enough..

  20. Thinkpack17 03/28/2011 at 3:10 PM #

Do we even compete in field hockey?

  21. bmamba101 03/29/2011 at 5:54 PM #

    I wouldn’t hire that Lowe look-alike for $1 a year!!!
