Gillispie has also had informal contact about the jobs at Arkansas and just-opened Oklahoma. The source said, however, that Arkansas has already had face-to-face contact with and is close to hiring Minnesota coach Tubby Smith.

“FWIW I think Roo is full of it, but figuring out who his mystery man is should be interesting. Neither Romar or Painter qualify.”

Whether full of it or not, he said a few other things that were interesting as well. One was that DY is committed to trying to make NC State basketball better IF SHE CAN. That is to say, if there is an available hire that improves our hand immediately, she’ll pull the trigger. If not, we might stand pat one more year rather than make a BAD hire. (For those only reading every other word….essentially he said there is a chance that Sid stays if the right hire can’t be landed).

Now, whether true or not, that does bring up an interesting question. I know most folks are ready for the Sid show to be over, and all the talk so far has been optimistic about who we may or may not be able to land…..

But hypothetically, if things fell such that we were unable to make the right hire, how would everyone feel about one more year of Sid just to buy time, rather than hiring the wrong guy and being stuck with him for 4-7 years?

Again it’s hypothetical and I figure I already know the answer, at least mostly.

^I have thought that might be one reason she would keep him, but I don’t believe she will. Just can’t keep giving new hires 5 and 6 years to make something happen.

Sorry, but I don’t believe any option, even a mid major is worse than Sid. As a HC, he needs to go. Woodson’s endowment goals would probably take a big hit if Sid isn’t gone.

Going by tvp1’s quoted info, Mark Few seems to match a lot of those qualifications. The 10 year thing may have been rounding (this is his 12th year). I don’t get the “similarities to Lowe” comment if this is the person he’s referring to. Until tvp1’s repeated comments, I would have never guessed Few.
Some partial qualifiers (to Adventuroo’s list of hints): Mike Brey – same high school as Lowe; same age as Lowe; @ ND for 10 years (but not exclusively and also played college basketball); “neck of the woods” could refer to anywhere unless there is a subtle hint in that phrase.
    Mike Davis was mentioned already
Bruce Pearl: same age as Lowe; sports a bright school-colored blazer for big games; didn’t play college basketball; but, not at Tenn for 10 years and not there exclusively (also not an “unknown,” but an eyeopener)
    ????

Perhaps not, but that’s not the point.

Pearl would be one of those guys that I would cringe over at least a little, but if he’s learned his NCAA lessons OK, he might not be a bad pick up. He could be looking to bolt before the NCAA causes him to get terminated for cause.

Baxter. Wouldn’t Woodson’s goals for endowment be hurting, if we had to pay Sidney a lot of money for him to leave ( I think he has two years left), and then pay two to three million for a new coach. This doesn’t count as an endowment, and donors would have less money to give.

Ignore my post (from page one) about the possibility of Sidney not being fired. The source of that was a now-admitted hoax. I should have ignored it, but I’ve seen some dumb decisions made at State for many years. So I tried to confirm it from other sources.

^^^The last sentence of this article doesn’t make it sound like Yow is as respected by coaches as some fans. I’m sure coaches are well aware of her fallout over Williams. I would think most coaches would of sided with Gary.

  11. fernandopacker 03/15/2011 at 8:47 AM #

I don’t like the quote from an ACC head coach who is saying “Yow has been going around for months asking who she should hire to replace Lowe”

  12. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 9:11 AM #

Well a few of you have hit the mark…..and I have done some more research and some of my clues were a bit weak.

One thing, if you reall all the chatter about this gentlemen’s past and his suitors, they do not fly economy and eat at Mickey D’s while they are courting him.

Based on the reports by some knowledgeable sources of his courtship LAST YEAR, it will probably take WAY OVER $2,000,000 maybe closer to $3,000,000 to get him. There were serious offers, I believe, last year that could approach that and that was his “dream” job….and he did not budge.

SO, even though I believe that the source that provided the info is credible, I don’t know if we have the re$ource$ to follow-up with a legitimate offer…..unless some of the big donors set up a “fund” for him.

Same thing can be said for SM at AU…..if you read about how he turned down the FIRST offer last year and his signing bonu$, we don’t have that money in the petty ca$h drawer.

As much as it pains people, I do not believe that Ms. Yow will pull the trigger without having a REAL plan. I also agree with the comment that she will not be asked to be the keynote speaker at the Annual NCAA Football and Basketball Coaches Appreciation Dinner.

She might get a pass for RF, but GW is well liked and respected and most of his peers sided with him during his “trauma” period with the Ex MD AD. And, the MD AD Director’s Cup numbers reflect a lot of his success. I am SURE there were good reasons, on both sides, for the tiff…..but in the court of public opinion (which rarely includes fans….but does include the coaching fraternity), the jury voted unanousmly for Gary…..thus one of the reasons there WAS a change later on.

However, if the folks that are still mourning Herb’s departure decide to kiss and make up and come back to the party and bring a really big booty, then she will have a better negotiating posture. We could probably, within her own control, maybe add 30 – 50% (a stetch?) to Coach Lowe’s compensation. Attendance figures are deceiving. The folks that are still boycotting Herb’s departure STILL have to take their season tickets otherwise they lose their priority. The upper levels are sparce, but not that different from when Herb was here. When you hear the PAID attendance numbers, they are usually much higher than just doing a crowd estimation is.

Therefore, even though this year is probably down some since they did more promo’s, it is NOT like GT…so the “revenue loss” issue that forced out RF at MD and PH at GT is NOT in play here.

I have also been told that there is SOME hedging of WPC donations but NOT a major amount……for those that want to run out and cancel their WPC dues, that also means that you lose your LTR’s in FB….so unless some of the really big guys chime in, there is NOT an overwhelming “LOWE has got to GO” from the WPC….and many of the former players SUPPORT HIM. THEIR votes count for a LOT more that we peons speculating here.

I DO believe that she will work hard to come up with a coach that will, in her opinion, bring positive results and will not take a flyer…..and I beleive that Coach Lowe is probably history. But STRANGER things have happened, so until someone sees him at the ABC store getting Boxes or come driving up in a U-Haul, he is STILL the coach.

Chances of him lasting through April are probably about as good as the stock market going up 10% by then….but you never know.

I sincerely hope that she makes the best decision….whatever it is….

    Bite your tongue, man! 🙂

I stopped supporting Sidney sometime in January.

“how would everyone feel about one more year of Sid just to buy time, rather than hiring the wrong guy and being stuck with him for 4-7 years?”

Lee Fowler isn’t still the AD. Most AD’s probably don’t let bad coaches stay on for that long.

If DY didn’t not feel fairly certain that she’ll be able to make a quality hire there would have been some damage control with respect to Sidney. There essentially has been deafening silence, which tells me he’s gone. I’m sure the back channel contacts have been established and DY has a high degree of confidence in where we stand right now with prospects.

There is not a big outcry from the WPC because Sid is one of our own. I have not come across anyone who thinks Sid should stay, but they are not going to stomp their feet and call for a lynch mob either. People feel guilty about wanting him to go, but they want him to go.

  16. LifeLongWolf 03/15/2011 at 11:31 AM #

I’m glad most people seem excited about the prospects of the swift, professional, calm process ending in the hire of a great candidate…but like my name says, I’ve been a Pack fan for a long time. It never ceases to amaze me how we always seem to find a way out of a great situation and find a way to shoot ourselves in the foot. So…not getting my expectations up. Still hopeful, but not expecting a world changing event.

I’ll be glad to be proven wrong, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this. (just like when I get that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach when we’re up 10 in the second half with 8 minutes to play…).

fernando, I don’t know exactly when it happened. It wasn’t long after Tracy Smith returned to the lineup and we still weren’t much better. There was just a point where I realized it wasn’t happening and it wasn’t GOING to happen with Sidney leading the way. And Sid started doing the same old things that I hoped he had learned better, like the odd substitutions, micro-managing every play by whistling from the sidelines, not fouling when we’re down 7+ with 1.5 minutes to play to extend the games. I wanted to believe we just needed good, experienced players. But it became apparent to me that Sidney was the young, inexperienced player, er, coach. HE was the one making more mistakes than the freshmen.
