Retractions and Apologies from “Donovan in Raleigh” sources

A quick update on last night’s entry that detailed erroneous reports of Billy Donovan’s presence in Raleigh or his intention to travel to Raleigh.

I referenced a radio report that was proven incorrect by ESPN’s Dave Telep.

Additionally, I referenced a report from a Syracuse graduate student that Billy Donovan was in Raleigh. According to one of our posters BAM, the grad student (Mike Lederer) issued him this apology via email today:

I just wanted to write to you to personally apologize for incorrectly reporting that Billy Donovan was in Raleigh yesterday interviewing for the N.C. State coaching vacancy. I based my story on sources which I felt were credible at the time and unfortunately did not do enough due diligence to verify the news as fact. I should have known better since I was initially skeptical upon hearing the news but I ran with the story anyway.

I obviously can’t apologize to everyone who read the story but since you commented I just wanted to let you know that I am truly sorry.

I promise to work harder moving forward and I vow not to let this happen again. Thank you for visiting the site and once again, I am sorry.

Best of luck to your Wolfpack!

Mike Lederer

Additionally, NC State website PackInsiders has backed off of their report yesterday on Billy Donovan:

So what does this mean? Well #1 and #2 we stand by, will always stand by and know to be true. No doubt about it. What we are now forced to backtrack on is our belief that he was in Raleigh. Twenty minutes after that phone call informing us that Donovan was heard to be heading to Raleigh, ESPN radio in Florida says the same thing. So did we jump the gun by feeling confident? Well, unlike the first two pieces of info, we hadn’t had this verified by another source close to us. We used ESPNRadio’s tweet to solidify our stance. At that point we felt our information was likely fact and we posted it.

Rule #1 for being a Wolpfack fan: Don’t believe anything that is potentially good.

Rule #1 for this search: Don’t believe anything until the press conference.

I wrote an article on here on our AD and what we can expect out of this search. They key lesson in that entire post was to understand that NO ONE will know ANYTHING about what is going on until it’s already decided. People were claiming to “know” about Donovan last night, but any reasonable person could be fairly certain that nothing was already decided on Tuesday night, only one night past the deadline for applicants from the job.

NOTE: Since this is a state job, the position had to be listed publically by the university and stated that applications would be taken until Monday. I’m unsure if this means that they aren’t legally allowed to make a decision until then, but either way, it would have looked bad, from a state institution perspective, for administrators to already have made a decision one day after applications were (legally required?) to be accepted.

The long-and-short of it is to not get too excited about anything. That doesn’t mean be all doom-and-gloom (that’s my pet peeve about many State fans including many on this site), but don’t be too quick to get swept up in the hysteria surrounding Twitter posts and Facebook statuses.

This is also a good general rule for life…

So its not too late for me to apply? I have really been practicing on NCAA 2011 for XBOX..made the national championship two years in a row with top recruiting classes.

When you live for something, that’s when it beats you.

  11. BJD95 03/30/2011 at 3:43 PM #

So, in my view, absolutely nothing has changed. None of the positive “evidence” or the naysaying (including “we are on the midmajor list already) has anything to subtantiate it.

Only a small handful of people know anything. Relax for at least 36-48 more hours.

  12. wolf_at_my_door 03/30/2011 at 3:44 PM #

I won’t believe anything until 3 days after a press conference. Coaches have been known to back out.

  13. BJD95 03/30/2011 at 3:44 PM #

Meant to add “and none of that handful are going to talk until it is done and settled.”

  14. ADVENTUROO 03/30/2011 at 3:50 PM #

    Well,

That takes the pressure off the “No Fault Divorce” clause in BD’s contract. I’ll bet a tidy sum that there are a LOT of coaches in Houston that would RUN and not walk if Debbie Yow said, “Im in room 1234, why don’t you come up for a drink so we can talk and get acquainted…..” Their wives would be telling them to go there and “sell” their services….

Rule A (which superceded Rule #1), have faith in the Wolfpack Lady AD….she will do right by us…

  15. PackerInRussia 03/30/2011 at 3:55 PM #

So we’re delusional for thinking a “name” coach could come to NC State, right? So I guess we’re just supposed to ignore and assume wrong any external source (i.e. not just some fan saying “I wish Coach X would come”) who makes such claims as were made like the one about Donovan? And that whole business will be added to the “Another Reason State Fans Are Crazy” list, yet we didn’t even start the dang rumor.

  16. packof81 03/30/2011 at 3:55 PM #

… just so long as it’s room 1234 and not room 237.

  17. hellfishtat 03/30/2011 at 4:01 PM #

We just need to wait and see what Yow lands for us.

  18. JVM4PACK 03/30/2011 at 4:11 PM #

AD Yow seemed extremely straight forward that this would be kept private/confidential until a decision was mede, yet everyone from every angle of life is trying to secure any fractional amount of “leaked” knowledge to gain an early insight on our direction and destination whomever and whenever that might be…can’t wait for the presser and a new day to knock down our shady blue toned neighbors

  19. sautz 03/30/2011 at 4:19 PM #

To add to my Rule #1 a bit, I am still waiting until the presser to pass any judgement. I still think Rick Barnes to here makes a lot of sense for him and us. I think a shoe company could definitely motivate some other coach to come here and scoop up our rights. I think Hodge’s and Harrow’s tweets the other day may have meant something. In summary, I would guess we are still in play for some “A” names.
However, I, like pretty much everyone else know nothing. I’m just trying to not get my hopes up too much. It is pretty maddening to have to wait, especially since Glenn and a bunch of goons are starting to laugh at us, but this is 100% better than how the search was handled in 2006. Hopefully the way it is being handles lands us the right coach.

I feel the same as BJD, no need to get worked up over the negative or positive RUMORS.

I say just enjoy the contrast of this search compared to the last one. Once the announcement is made, then will be the time for serious reaction.

  21. wolflane74 03/30/2011 at 4:49 PM #

Just an observation. Those national reporters that seem to think that NC State is a doormat for the holes and the dookies are paying a lot of attention to and are very curious about the NC State coach selection process.

  22. sequoyah 03/30/2011 at 4:55 PM #

I’m fine with this coaching search so far, and it’s going pretty much like DY said it would in the press conference.

Consider this: 1) we haven’t officially/publicly been rejected by anyone yet 2) no coach hired by another school is someone we covet (so far as anyone knows). This ain’t no LF search.

Ignore the rumors and let’s see how this plays out; truly there is no reason to get excited one way or the other yet.

  23. Wufpacker 03/30/2011 at 5:20 PM #

Considering the tweets from a few moments ago, I take it Ovies was being anything but clear and was implying that SFN was backtracking from claims it never made in the first place?

  24. highstick 03/30/2011 at 5:24 PM #

I told you guys that this search may have even exceed the lunacy of the last search.

But the key difference is that you cannot fault the AD for this one! I promise that the GPA of the freshman class at State is declining quickly because they won’t stay off of this site speculating!

  25. Pack84 03/30/2011 at 5:28 PM #

“Only a small handful of people know anything. Relax for at least 36-48 more hours.”

OK – I’ll ask again. What gives with this seemingly arbitrary “panic deadline”?
