Monday Evening Speculation

SFN continues to monitor the rampant speculation, but as we’ve mentioned previously, we have no reason to buy into the credibility of any of it, and as a result, there’s nothing new of value to report this evening.

The only thing we’ve really confirmed today is that Jeff Goodman is a “Heisman”-caliber idiot. Here’s a few of his Tweets about our coaching search (link):

N.C. State’s Debbie Yow being given the Heisman by several candidates thus far. She may be waiting now to win the presser with Shaka Smart.

The question, though, is whether Shaka Smart would even take the N.C. State job. I’m told it wouldn’t be a no-brainer for him.

N.C. State fans are delusional if they think it’s been only Rick Barnes and Sean Miller that have given Debbie Yow the Heisman.

Sources told me that a coach in the A-10, Conference-USA and another one in the Big 12 have said “thanks, but no thanks” to NC State.

The coaching search game doesn’t work as with official offers. It’s a search firm guy throwing out a number and seeing if there’s interest.

In at least three occasions in addition to Barnes and Miller, coaches said they weren’t interested and didn’t move forward.

I still don’t understand why it matters whether people turn jobs down. Perfect example: Sean Miller. He was way down line of options at AZ.

Obviously, since there’s no info coming from Yow’s office, Goodman’s sources are probably all coaches, or more precisely, their agents. Coaches are notoriously egomaniacs, and it’s not only strategic but also feels good for them to publicly express their disinterest in a job they haven’t been offered, and it makes Goodman feel good to use Twitter to let us all know how little he thinks of the N.C. State job.

But, it’s no secret that the chatter surrounding Billy Donovan has seemed to pick up some momentum today, and perhaps Donovan is the “knockout hire” Tim Brando mentioned yesterday. It’s easy for Yow to keep her own folks under wraps, but once you begin negotiating with another coach, you have no control over how well that program contains leaks. So, if this is truly happening, the nerve-racking silence is probably because Florida wants it contained as much as Yow so that they can quickly move on their top target (perhaps even Shaka Smart, who was an assistant under Donovan before he went to VCU).

We found this interesting “March Stipulation” included in Donovan’s contract (Orlando Sentinel link):

If Donovan leaves the school without cause, he must pay the school $500,000. If the school fires Donovan without cause, he receives $2.5 million for every year left on his contract. This is big time — and it could have caused the 16-month holdup. If the Gators were to fire Donovan in two years, he’d receive around $7.5 million. This shows the Gators are serious about Donovan’s stability. However, there’s a window from March 1 to April 1 of any year when both parties can walk away clean, no monetary issues. Interesting.

So…if we have made an offer to Donovan, then we should know by Thursday afternoon, right? After that, we can be fairly certain that Shaka Smart is our main focus.

In the meantime, speculate away on the SFN Forums.

I’m with you Choppack1. I”m starting to believe when this is all said and done we might be fortunate, Yes that is correct! We may be fortunate to get Shaka Smart. I only hope that most of the Wolfpack nation will want him and more important DY will have the insight to see that this guy is Blossoming at the right time for NC State.

If he wins a national championship, and you that are wishing we don’t get him still feel that way. Well, then all I can say at that point is no wonder many fan bases across America call us delusional.

As to recruiting, you don’t think this guy could come into the ACC and recruit? The funny thing is some of you probably don’t. Damn! My 90 year old mother gets it.

I really don’t remember but was there this much worry when we hired V? I know his name was not nationwide when he got here.

    lol

Our program was awful in the 1990s. Herbert came in and frustrated us for 10 mediocre years. Yes mediocre. Just getting into a field of 64 after the heights we have been to is mediocre.

Now people demand a “home run” and feel we are doomed if we get Smart.

Get real people. We aren’t going to get an “instant” program. We will have to rebuild just like Duke did with K and Carolina did when they hired Deano.

Yow is going to get us a solid coach who will build a program starting with Sid’s players.

Is anyone backing Goodman here / reporting the same thing?

If not, consider what is most likely.

    My bet is the following:

Coach is interested in State opening. Coach’s Agent inquires through third party / search firm. Agent is told there is no interest from State’s end. Agent turns to media buddy / Goodman. Goodman reports it as Coach has no interest in State.

^I’d believe that way easier than I would a coach in CUSA turning down a raise and an ACC gig.

Utter BS. Give me a break.

    “Sources”.

I know speculation is fun, but if I was FL, I knew my coach was leaving, and my #1 target was still playing (game on Tuesday night) well I may request outgoing coach and school to wait a day or two so I could get him locked away.

Goodman is clearly trying to incite discussion good or bad. I wouldn’t pay him any credence.

    On to the coaches:

It will be exciting no matter who we get. We are at a point in our program in which it seems that the only way to go is up. How fast that happens has everything to do with this hire. It won’t be overnight, but certain coaches have proven that they can build steps faster than others and any of these guys that we’ve been discussing will be in improvement. It is my only hope that they display the same passion for the red and white that Sidney did and restore our program to it’s once vaulted heights.

OK people, I have a hot tip. A coach who finished 5th and 4th in his mid-major conference in his two years, who goes 11-7 in conference with no key wins out of conference – do you want him? Guy is not even in a major conference and has not finished higher than 4th.

THAT is what we have set our sights on? A team gets hot at the right time, but look at the entire body of work.

The UNX boards are now scared that we will actually hit the grand slam with our new coach. Quite humorous too.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm…..

Which UNX boards? I couldn’t find the thread you’re talking about.

    That’s kinda exciting.

Hodge was messing around. Don’t buy that crap!

  13. mwcric 03/29/2011 at 12:06 AM #

Seemed interesting relative to all the other news from today is all. I’d trust Jules to have inside info more than any of my fellow message boarders – no offense. You could be right though.

  14. Afterglow 03/29/2011 at 12:12 AM #

It was taken out of context; he was messing around.

  15. dsgill87 03/29/2011 at 12:25 AM #

I’m not sold that he was totally messing around.. he did like a post that says something about a “duo involving Nike”.. I feel so silly, lol.. At least this is fun

Shaka Smart. Career assists leader at his high school and college. Graduated magna cum laude. Has a master’s degree. Former director of basketball operations at Dayton. Former assistant at Clemson & Florida. Major motivator. Teams play hard, hustle and over-achieve. Think what he could do with recruits in the ACC. I’d take a chance on him after seeing our lack of recent motivation and hustle.

“is there anyone who would strike more fear on the heart of the Heels and Devils w/ their aging coaches?”

    I hope you’re kidding.

  19. Astral Rain 03/29/2011 at 6:57 AM #

Donovan and Smart would both bring instant credibility.

I’d be afraid of Donovan bolting again, if he’d bolt Florida, he’d bolt State. I’ll be along for the wild ride though.

Mike, this is exactly the way I feel about Smart. 4th and 5th in the CAA and happens to get hot in the tourney…. He hasn’t even proven he can recruit. Sure he may have been a recruiter in the past, but it doesn’t show in his current team. I think you have to give this guy at least another yr or two to see if he can 1) recruit as a head coach and 2) finish at least 1st or 2nd in the CAA.

I will say that he looks to be headed in the right direction with how he has handled playing the “big” boys, ie. playing small against the bigs of Kansas. I really think we need someone who is more proven than a guy who got hot at the right time and has made a run in the NCAA Tourney. Just my .02.

Search firms put out feelers to guage interest. Out of over 300 Div I Mens B ball coaches, I am sure we could get many that respond with no. Amazing how the media turns it into “they told NCSU no” like we offered them the job. That is just not the case.

Then you have coaches that use the media and situation to try and get themselves a raise at their current school.

Then you have coaches like Oliver Purnel that have no loyalty (2AM call to Clemson AD that he was leaving) and would bolt at any opportunity to better themselves especially when you only won one conference game in the Big East.

One of our best scenarios is we get a TOB type that comes out of nowhere highly qualified and contacts the search firm that he is interested.

Just wondering who is going to be the first AD to hire a woman to coach the men? Whould you support Yow hiring a very successful woman to coach the men? I bet a woman could be a great recruiter. Sitting down with a young man and his mother, a young man would have to come to NCSU!

After the big three, I think Shaka should def. be our target. Like others have said, nobody’s name is hotter in college hoops right now than his. I’ve watched some of his games and the dude can flat coach, he’s proven that to me and I think if we were to get him the media would have to give us instant cred. and all the buzz can help him hit the ground running here with recruits. And please no Marshall, good grief, we were talking about him last time, nobody big has scooped him up by now, that should tell us something.

  23. In The Weeds 03/29/2011 at 7:53 AM #

Looking at the C-USA teams/coaches, I see only 2 we would even think of considering – and they are a strech at best: Doherty at SMU and Pastner at Memphis.
That tells me the Goodman is full of sh*! and just trying to get on board with other writers to “create” a story.

  24. Howler 03/29/2011 at 7:55 AM #

Pure one hundred percent uninformed speculation is fun, isn’t it? Let’s let the media do it and not participate. Take all the time you need, Debbie. Let them keep wasting their ink.

  25. Howler 03/29/2011 at 7:57 AM #

Weeds, I am assuming the Doherty comment was intended as a joke.
