Miller out of contention (J.P. Giglio)

Full Link

John Miller said he talked to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow about his son’s future but Sean Miller took himself out of contention for the Wolfpack job before Arizona’s surprising 93-77 win over Duke on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

“I think he really talked it over and made his decision,” said John Miller, a retired legendary high school coach in western Pennsylvania. “He just doesn’t want to make another move and move his family again.”

I’m sorry plywood, I don’t speak 13 year old, please explain that for me.

You and other have blind faith in what ever DY does and I’m suggesting that my not be the way to go. Her track record is not as good as you all like to make it.

Btw, the best Richard pryor quote was when he was talking about his father and he said his father dead while having sex. Pryor said “my father came and went at the same time”. Classic.

My ADD is setting in, good night.

This post covers the full range of emotion. Anxiety, sorrow, laughter, and a heavy dose of sarcasm. I give it two thumbs up. A good read for the whole family.

Yes my xanax with beer chaser has kicked in. “I will endeavor to persevere”.

“You and other have blind faith in what ever DY does and I’m suggesting that my not be the way to go.”

There you go again. Here’s my post “I’ve read people saying they have faith in DY, and that faith is based on the presser, and how the search has been handled to this point. Simple as that.”

Where in there did I say “blind faith”?

    Just stop it.

    Statefan1998, quit trolling bro . . .

Bring depth to your argument, facts, data . . if you don’t think DY is good bring an agrument for “why”.

So far, it is only your emotion.

    Go argue emotion somewhere else.

Chris Mack seems like a good candidate to me. Knows the ACC from his time at Wake under Prosser, and Miller’s right hand man at Xavier. Let’s face it, Arizona is just a better job right now.

  7. Pack1998 03/25/2011 at 11:13 PM #

^2Holt, agree . . . and we all knew going in Miller was a longshot. Arizona it a great program on the West Coast. I had a little hope, but at the beginning we never thought it would happen.

Mack is good. But if you go there, do you just go with Turgeon or someone similar to Mack that has cut his teeth in a bigger conference? Plenty of options.

And for the record, indepedent of where Smart is on the NC State list, he is good. I think FSU is physically better, all FSU needs to do is slow it down and go down low and they dominate VCU . . . BUT as of mid-game VCU still in the lead, making FSU play differently. I like it. Great late games.

Wow! I stay away for a day and it sounds like people are ready to dig our grave.

I don’t see how anybody is judging Yow as a bad hire right now. So far as far as I can tell she’s been nothing but professional and appears to be worlds better than Fowler this point.

What everyone needs to remember is that we did not hire her to identify and go after Barnes, Miller & Donovan. Even I can tell you that one or all of those coaches should be primary targets and probably do a decent job of trying to convince them to come. Where DY is going to earn her money is on the A- or B list hire. Now she might have to select someone who is not an obvious touchdown (I’m still not ruling out the top three until it’s over). Everyone on this site can agree that Barnes, Miller & Donovan would be great here, hell my dog might be able to do that. Where you find everyone disagreeing is when you get to the next level. Does she pick the next Bill Self or Jimmy V; or does she find the next Sendek or Gillian? We won’t have any idea until we see who it is and even then it might take a couple years to really figure out if she made a good hire or not.

Keep in mind the problem with fowlers search was that when he ran out of “a” candidates he panicked. That is a sign of a crappy plan and poor personal discipline.

  11. WeAreCured 03/25/2011 at 11:53 PM #

Bernie James with the nasty block!

If Chaka Kahn takes it to the ‘Noles in OT, I’ll be very impressed. The ‘Noles have the momentum, though.

  12. Pack1998 03/25/2011 at 11:53 PM #

How about that FSU game ending to go to OT — call a play coach!

Yea, Fowler had no plan B. No offense to the guy, he almost landed Cal. Oh what could have been . . . but close don’t count. He had other options after his first 2 and couldn’t make it happen.

  13. WeAreCured 03/26/2011 at 12:10 AM #

Chaka Kahn does it! Great inbound play. I’m thoroughly impressed.

  14. ADVENTUROO 03/26/2011 at 12:27 AM #

I could live with this guy….protege of Oliver Purnell. Of course, I’m expecting an announcement momentarily…..RIGHT.

The inbounds play which lead to the lead was a GREAT CALL. Shows a lot of moxy. Hamilton should have known about that and had the D set up. He did not.

I think that the “A” list may have a LOT of coaches with good programs that are NOT the Arizona, Texas, or Florida teams…..and we should just cool it.

Good night all….don’t let the Rumor Mill Bugs bite

  15. wolfmanmat 03/26/2011 at 7:18 AM #

^Yea exactly, if the “A” candidates are gone you don’t go to plan “F.” You go to plan “b.” Fact is, our job is not significantly better(or better at al) than Texas/Pitt/Zona. Every coaching candidate sees opportunity at State but we’ve sucked for most the last 25 years and been completely lapped by the Holes and Devils and coaches see that too. We ain’t KU/UK/UNC/Duke/UCLA, in any coaches mind.

  16. JSRy2k 03/26/2011 at 7:31 AM #

    Brad Stevens question:
How big of a buyout would NC State have to pay if he were a serious candidate? His contract is so long, I would imagine the penalty for leaving early is quite large.

  17. 74wulf 03/26/2011 at 8:38 AM #

Yeah, strike 2 . . . Any of you Yow fans think that her tussle with Gary Williams doesn’t help her with the coaching fraternity?

  18. Thompson44 03/26/2011 at 8:48 AM #

Stevens is not coming, Miller is not coming, Barnes is not coming. Relax people, two words: Shaka Smart……

  19. JT 03/26/2011 at 9:15 AM #

I don’t buy into this breaking down of candidates into A, B, C etc. listers. I see it more as successful big time coaches (who would be hard to get by ANY school, and I think Miller may be a little far down this road), successful coaches at slightly less prestigious programs and successful mid-major coaches, for whom a job like State’s is an ultimate career goal. People blow it off, some fans have inferiority complexes, but State is a sleeping giant. Give me hungry guy with a proven enough record on a decent level and great things can happen. I’ll leave it to Yow to figure out who is most promising. But the “list” is a good one, and I am not worried who comes. Smart may be the biggest reach by being so young, but who of us knows? Wouldn’t bother me at all. It’s a great time to be a State fan.

  20. Wulfpack 03/26/2011 at 9:28 AM #

Giglio reported that Miller spoke to the search firm, and his dad to Debbie Yow. He denied an interview with us prior to his win over Duke.

Move on — he is not coming.

I would like to see Turgeon, Mack, Smart and Marshall get serious looks.

  21. slushy1975 03/26/2011 at 9:47 AM #

We’re simply asking coaches have no reason to leave their current successful jobs if they’d like to leave their present situation. Odds are that folks enjoying a good career and lifestyle will choose to maintain it. It’s no rejection of the quality of the NC State job or the basketball program.

Remember, Jimmy V is the one who said, “You don’t mess with ‘happy.'”

We’re asking, discretely, if these great coaches want to “mess w/ happy.” Keep that in mind and don’t feel rejection at all.

  22. ncsumatman 03/26/2011 at 9:55 AM #

Sometimes this website and the comments give me a chuckle, especially the Billy Donovan posts. Perhaps John Wooden may also be available to interview for the #1 job in the world, we shouldn’t offer it to him just yet, but see how much he wants to coach in Raleigh. If we don’t like him I’m sure we could offer it Roy or Coach K, or maybe Tom Izzo would leave MSU to come here. Personally, I say we target Phil Jackson, and then if that falls through do a complete freak out.

  23. packalum44 03/26/2011 at 10:26 AM #

^ You must be a casual fan. We had (perhaps have) double digit percent chances with Barnes/Miller you’d be a FOOL not to talk to them. Apparently Billy D has ties to Yow…you know the same coach that was practically moved to Orlando before he changed his mind and returned?

Yeah how silly of us to reach out to a restless coach at a football school.

  24. Wufpacker 03/26/2011 at 10:51 AM #

” Yeah, strike 2 . . . Any of you Yow fans think that her tussle with Gary Williams doesn’t help her with the coaching fraternity? ”

While not a “Yow fan” exactly (at least not yet…we’ll see) I have to say that any candidate who reacts to that at face value without checking their facts is not someone I’d want at NCSU anyway.

And by checking their facts I don’t mean talking to Gary Williams and/or Maryland fans (some of whom actually supported her in that “tussle”, as you call it). Considering that GW was sandbagging it on the recruiting trail because he didn’t want to have to deal with certain elements, I think she was well within her bounds as the AD to call him on it. Whether he thinks so or not, he has a responsibility to his employer and the fans of his team. If he didn’t want to compete at the highest level anymore then he should have taken his ’02 glory and ridden off into the sunset.

If any coach we have at NCSU now or in the future ever starts mailing it like he did, then I hope she does the exact same thing. Put pressure on them and then try to get rid of them if they put up a fight.

If she had been a man it would not have become the big issue it became in the first place.
