Miller out of contention (J.P. Giglio)

Full Link

John Miller said he talked to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow about his son’s future but Sean Miller took himself out of contention for the Wolfpack job before Arizona’s surprising 93-77 win over Duke on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

“I think he really talked it over and made his decision,” said John Miller, a retired legendary high school coach in western Pennsylvania. “He just doesn’t want to make another move and move his family again.”

SoCalwolf I guess you must have missed the game last night where Millers outcoached the best active coach in college basketball.

  2. leewolf 03/25/2011 at 6:32 PM #

    Miller is a great coach.

There are many other good and great coaches out there.

We have had a bad (Sid), mediocre (Hreb), and bad but hamstrung (Les) in the past 20 years.

I’m not worried about the future. We are in good hands. Listen to BJD and just breath folks.

Despite the gloomy talk of the sky falling, this is NOT 2006. DY is not LF … and is not likely to FUBAR a coaching search the way he did. We may not get a big name, major college coach, but we also will not get a mercy-hire like last time (that is, somebody, anybody who’d step in to put Lee out of his misery … only to continue ours).

My preference? A young, enthusiastic, hungry coach who wants to make his place in the coaching world by chewing up Tarheel/Dukie azz … and who can see himself still doing it long after Roy and K have gone to their rocking chairs.

““I suspect many big-name coaches may back off at the prospect of having as their boss a female AD who has a reputation of being being stubborn.”

Wow? What ****ing world do you live in? This isn’t the 20′s.”

He lives in the same world Gary Williams lives. What do you think the root of his problem with Yow is?

And for the snide remark about why we hire DY, why not type something factual for a change.

  6. swamppack 03/25/2011 at 6:58 PM #

Here’s a fact. DY has not made a bufoonish fool out of herself like LF did. If she does, fire away. She hasn’t, so chill. What more do you want from her at this point?

By the way, the next hire does not have to be a “big name”, just the “right fit”.

Please will one of the SFN Mods please lock this down? As a daily lurker and very infrequent poster, the desperation posts in this thread are inexcusable.

Only the Tooth Fairy brings things overnight. So chill out and drink a cold one. Some impressionable soul reading this thread might actually start to believe State is doomed. Actually this is part of “The Journey” and is one of the best opportunities we have had in quite some time.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. Better days are ahead.

For those upset about the report… I would speculate that this isn’t Miller’s father going behind Yow’s back. I’m sure this was done exactly the way Yow would want.

Daddy Miller was probably the contact for NC State’s people. At some point this week SM and Zona came to an agreement about terms for a new deal. SM talks it over with the wife and family and decide to stay.

SM calls dad and says please let DY know that I’m staying. Papa call DY and says that SM isn’t a candidate for NC State. I’m sure very respectful and by the book. Papa tells DY that SM needs to remove his name from any list to end media speculation and distraction. Since Yow doesn’t have a list she say call up J.P. with the N&O and let them know that SM is staying.

I have no doubt the Miller’s wouldn’t remove his name in anyway that would show disrespect to Yow and NC State.

Sounds like a class act to me.

I love the thought / hope that Sean Miller or Billy Donovan are AD Yow’s top targets.

    But –

I also truly / honestly / fervently believe that Butler’s Brad Stevens is the next “Mike Krzyewski”.

I’d love to see Brad Stevens introduced as State’s next head coach (and State’s coach for the next 20+ years).

Man, you guys are overstressing. Sure Barnes, Miller and Donovan would be fantastic, but if you are rational about it all three are looong shots just based on what is publicly known about their situations. All along it was most likely going to be a guy ready to take a step up after being successful in their current situation.

  11. MattN 03/25/2011 at 7:51 PM #

We could have had Miller 5 years ago with only 2 years coaching experience. Our AD was too much of a chicken sh#t to even CALL him (hell, he called everydamnone else…)

I think we’re to the point we find the best guy with 2-4 years head coaching exp. Just call Chris Mack or Smart (assuming he loses tonight) and let’s get this over with….

  12. mak4dpak 03/25/2011 at 7:57 PM #

Guys I really don’t think losing Miller, or Barnes is a knock on State, because their present jobs would not be up for anyone taking them away. So no one else could have done anymore than I am sure we did. So we still have some good options out there, like Randy Bennett, Mark Few, the BYU coach, and others, so there still is a light at the end of the tunnel, we just have to be patient.

“What in the world is the fixation some have with the Miller clan? It’s bodering on the sureal.”

Not a fan of the letter “r”? Just kidding 😉

I think the fixation is that he’s a successful coach who is young and been pumped up by many as a possible candidate for the job here. Then, he wins a few games in the tournament. Then, he whips Duke. It’s like a crush.
If they meet up with UNC at some point (I’m hoping UNC’s long gone before then) and whip them too, some people might become Arizona fans. Or at least try to clone him…and some people might be hoping that Archie IS a clone of his brother.

I’ve seen/heard this name mentioned in the past couple of days so I wanted to lay out why Buzz Williams of Marquette shouldn’t be considered and probably should be fired from Marquette.

This is all the evidence needed:

Everyone keep things in perspective. First off, DY is a refreshment from Uncle Jed, but we don’t know yet if she was a good hire. We would all like to have faith in her, but, like Sidney, think of her right now as Wolfpack family. She will need to prove her worth as time goes on. I think she will do the best she can, but the State basketball program has not been relevant for some 25 years. Some of us old coots remember the glory days, but they continue to blur with each sunset. She has a difficult job in front of her, that is for sure.

As for Miller, sit tight and see how things shake out. It aint over ’til the fat lady sings. Relax and enjoy the ride in the meantime. The guy himself hasn’t said no to anyone. And if he did, remember, he changed his mind after he first said no to Zona.
These are life altering situations, and if DY gets a chance to talk to him after the NCAAT, she may make the situation attractive.

the advice on the cold beer came too late…Jack and Coke is the drink of the day. But I must say, the GEICO commercials and the posts that I’m reading here are more entertaining than these 2 sorry games. Maybe at some point we can give Ms. Yow and the school a break and chill out while they do their jobs.

  17. MattN 03/25/2011 at 8:06 PM #

Buzz is getting hammered by UNC right now. HAMMERED!

  18. Baccapacker 03/25/2011 at 8:10 PM #

I’m taking bjd’s advice, I got a cold 12 pack of Nattys waitin on me. I love a coaching search, all the rumors and the highs and lows, it’s gonna be interesting to see how everything pans out in the end.

  19. Wulfpack 03/25/2011 at 8:11 PM #

At least Buzz boogies better than Herb.

  20. Baccapacker 03/25/2011 at 8:12 PM #

Also Ovies said today that Arizona went H-A-M on Duke last night, hilarious.

  21. MrPlywood 03/25/2011 at 8:12 PM #

What’s with the DY bashing? Did I miss a press conference where she mentioned whiffing on Barnes, Miller or Donovan after offering them half of their current salary? The last time I heard from her she just finished leading a very professional press conference announcing the start of the search.

  22. Statefan1998 03/25/2011 at 8:24 PM #

It’s not bashing, but some fans think she is the greatest thing since slice bread. Most likely because she is not LF. She took this job because people were tired of her at CP.

  23. john of sparta 03/25/2011 at 8:29 PM #

    amen to that 1998 +1

  24. Wufpacker 03/25/2011 at 8:35 PM #

Saying (correctly) that she hasn’t done anything yet for which she should be bashed is not the same as proclaiming her to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Give her a chance to do her job. She’ll either do it well or she won’t, but to bash her based on rumor and hearsay (which is all any of us have to go on at this point) is terribly premature.

And besides, one cannot overstate the importance of NOT being LF.
