Miller out of contention (J.P. Giglio)

Full Link

John Miller said he talked to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow about his son’s future but Sean Miller took himself out of contention for the Wolfpack job before Arizona’s surprising 93-77 win over Duke on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

“I think he really talked it over and made his decision,” said John Miller, a retired legendary high school coach in western Pennsylvania. “He just doesn’t want to make another move and move his family again.”

Way to start the weekend on a crappy note.

Swaim guy is saying that Arizona was willing to match anything State offered.

Wish we all knew what were “smokescreens” at this point!

  3. Hamlet 03/25/2011 at 4:14 PM #

Not surprising at all to me. After what I was told and putting two and two together, I would have been totally stunned if Miller came to N.C. State. I have been more amused than anything that so many posts/pages have been spent going back and forth with the AZ folks on a guy I felt was no better than a 15% shot to coach here at this time.

I was told early last week that Miller would not be coming here. I am guessing that he has avoided going ‘public’ with it out of respect for DY and our program.

Now can we begin to look at more realistic candidates? Please

I’d say that’s not a smokescreen, that’s a full blown fire burning the SM to NC State possibility down. I’m sure this is being put out there because of the ongoing distracting questions from the media.

SM was my #1 candidate and had been for months. I thought he was the most achievable “A” lister.

I didn’t think Barnes was a realistic possibility, but would have gladly taken him. Now I’d personally turn to Tubby. Maybe Jay Wright is interested and if so we should give it a run.

We’re quickly moving into the Mike Brey or Oliver Purnell versus the mid-major field (Marshall, Smart, Mooney) discussion. I don’t know if Yow is doing it, but I’d look at Bennett of St. Marys before getting to that decision.

    Well durn…

I am NOT going to sink into the abyss of a negative Nancy. I believe Debbie Yow will find us an excellent coach. Whom that is remains to be seen. It may not be one of those top flight guys we’ve all been discussing but this isn’t the end of the world.

Assuming Barnes, Donovan, Wright, Dixon, etc. are out of the equation as well, I would like to see Turgeon and Mack interviewed. I trust DY’s judgment.

I never thought we had much of a chance at Miller, though I would have gladly taken him. 🙂 But the fact that his father is talking to Debbie Yow and then talking to the press doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. And just one source at that.

My A list candidates would be Donovan and Stevens, with Donovan about a 1:1,000,000 chance of leaving FL. I’d love to have Stevens, and find it odd that he is barely ever mentioned.

  7. Wulfpack 03/25/2011 at 4:35 PM #

Please, for the love of God, stop with the Brad Stevens nonsense. He is not coming to NC State — forget about it. Not happening. There are 300+ other programs that want him. Move on.

Maybe I don’t completely understand what a search firm does, but why did Yow need to talk to Miller’s dad about the job if the search firm is doing its job? Or is this an indication that there was some interest expressed, therefore she moved on to step 2 which is more direct (but still indirect) contact? Not saying I doubt what the guy’s dad is saying, but wondering about the process.

“Swaim guy is saying that Arizona was willing to match anything State offered.”

They were? Now who woulda ever thunk that????

  10. bradleyb123 03/25/2011 at 4:50 PM #

Or is this just a smokescreen intended to take the heat off Miller while they’re still dancing?

  11. Rochester 03/25/2011 at 4:51 PM #

The Sky-Is-Falling crowd that is already comparing this time around to Fowlup’s f-up last time need to chill out. If it’s even true that Barnes and Miller said no, that’s two long shots who said no. That’s hardly Debbie Yow f-ing the search up. There’s more than one good coaching candidate out there.

As I told a guy who brought up Sidney Lowe’s firing after he commented on my Wolfpack coat at lunch today, we could hire a fire hydrant and they would do a better job. We’ll get a good coach, and as long as they have a pulse we’re better off than we were. Take a deep breath.

    Maybe he has Alzheimer’s.

  13. PackerInRussia 03/25/2011 at 4:56 PM #

Sean, I just looked at your blog. I didn’t even know it was possible to run 40 miles. Wow. Also enjoyed your book entries.
Needed a break from this craziness.

  14. john of sparta 03/25/2011 at 4:56 PM #

    still surprised that we’re
    still using the word “search”.

  15. BJD95 03/25/2011 at 4:58 PM #

Team Miller might just want everyone off his ass for the next two days.

Not saying he’s coming or anything, but this entire search has been marked by head fakes and abrupt turns of the story. All the people who usually get intel will state honestly that it’s never been harder to track down information.

In short, I’m not willing to count out anyone until we announce the hire. Not Barnes, not Miller, not even Donovan (though I’ve always found that notion ridiculous). Pop a Xanax and enjoy the ride.

  16. LRM 03/25/2011 at 4:58 PM #

Find a report where Barnes was offered and turned it down, or where he said he wasn’t interested. Just because David Glenn says so doesn’t make it so. We knew all along Yow wasn’t making an offer to anyone until she talked to Miller. Now we know he’s not interested, she can move on.

Offer Barnes $3M+ and he won’t be interested?

  17. pack44fan 03/25/2011 at 4:58 PM #

Remember, Dick Sheridan came from Furman, Jimmy V from Iona, Lou Holtz from William and Mary…..not exactly big time schools.

  18. Pack1998 03/25/2011 at 5:01 PM #

Hey . . . No one knows he was even offered “officially”. Hypothetically he may have been offered.

Rest tight – DY is a great AD. She’ll do well. We will all support the hire with great enthusiasm!

I do have a question — Why the hell does his Dad speak for him? What would your Dad say in this situaion . . . he’d probably say, “Why don’t you go ask my son?” or “My son is performing his job righ now in the NCAA tournament.” Just weird, I had to comment on it.

Don’t fret, plenty of strong coaches out there. And with Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe as evidence, coaches in the last 15 years have performed better while at State than at any other job in their career. I had throw in that zinger, which is factual, check the data!!!

  19. tjfoose1 03/25/2011 at 5:01 PM #

“i don’t doubt the veracity of this. but an honest question: why would he go through his father like this? why not either shout from the rooftops how much he loves his current job OR fake interest and play us/UofA to get a raise?”

Because his father saying it will convince his current team and ease their fears, allowing them to concentrate on the task at hand.

Because his father saying it will accomplishing the above, while simultaneously keeping the door open for Sean to accept the NC State position w/o a potential Nick Saban/Miami Dolphins blantant lie.

Not saying it will happen, but that’s the reason for his father being his spokesman.

I’m sure Miller doesn’t want to have to make a decision right now. He too wants to focus on the task at hand. Let the focus and emotion of the moment pass, then he will make up his mind. If the position is filled, so be it. Even if he wanted the job, he wouldn’t be honoring his current committment by NOT taking the course of action he has chosen.

I’m sick of the woe is me crowd… Miller gives excellent reasons why he wouldn’t be the next coach here at NC State; honestly, can we really fault the man for staying in Arizona? Miller is actually doing us a service by allowing us to move on with our search. In my own life, I’ve dealt with similar situations where I was the person who turned down the job offer because what I already had was a good situation.

Read between the lines in the interview: Miller was interested in the position, it is just not the right time for him to make that commitment. It helps Yow with the fan base to know that we went after a “big fish” that just didn’t work out. With timing not working out for a candidate; it is almost eerily similar to the post a few days ago about Rick Barnes as a possible replacement for Les Robinson. Herb Sendek as a mid-major was not a bad hire for us at the time – he just didn’t turn into the coach we wanted him to be. It may border on treason with some posters in this community, hiring Sendek was a much better move than hiring Lowe. If you objectively look at previous track records before becoming NC State’s head coach, I’d have hired Sendek hands down, every time. If we hire a mid-major with good experience that is a good motivating coach, we’ll be a-ok. Don’t fret, people, not getting Miller will not be the end of our basketball program.

Thank you Rolling. As I state early… When did Yow become Jesus? We are going to end up with another 7 guy on the list. This is turn down number 2. Some of you act like Yow can do no wrong. We are entering another embarrasing coaching search and some of you sit there like all is well. Wake up and taste reality.

  22. PoppaJohn 03/25/2011 at 5:10 PM #

This is no big deal! Miller & Barnes are comfortably entrenched and were never going to leave this year. Anyone who thought otherwise was delusional.

Miller – Why start another rebuilding job, when he just got one going really well? His whole team is young. He has one of the best players in the country. His recruiting class is strong. He’s in great shape. And he’ll get a raise because of his NCAAT performance.
Barnes – He’s the king of Texas, why would he leave? If we throw money, they’ll throw more.

We missed our shot with these guys 5 years ago.

Now DY can get down to business with real potential candidates who will see State as the great opportunity it is.

  23. tjfoose1 03/25/2011 at 5:11 PM #

    “Wake up and taste reality.”

I prefer to wait until the meal is served. Then I will decide.

  24. LRM 03/25/2011 at 5:17 PM #

    “Barnes – He’s the king of Texas….”

Do all those Texas fans that could care less about basketball know that?

    What a ridiculous statement.
