Lowe resigns(J.P. Giglio); Decock: NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens

This is both a sad and exciting day for the NC State community. All the authors of Statefansnation would like to thank Sidney Lowe and his staff for their efforts over the last 5 years. We also wish them the best in the future.

Credit goes to rswilli2(poster from www.Packpride.com for this shot of Mr. Wuf after Sidney’s last home game.

I am just adding links as the day progresses. Sorry for the lack of organization. Read from the bottom up if you want to go in chronological order.

Technician reports:

The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.

However, the N.C. State Athletics department deferred questions about possible coaching candidates to Yow.

NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens:

Tom Crean has the recruiting pipeline open at Indiana. Purdue’s Matt Painter isn’t going anywhere. John Belein is hanging on at Michigan. So while Stevens may prefer to be patient, he shouldn’t wait until his moment has passed. Butler, after all, didn’t win the Horizon regular-season title this year and had to win its way into the NCAA tournament. The mid-major pyramid is not a stable one; the team at the top can topple at any time.

So if not the Big Ten, where? Why not the ACC? Why not N.C. State?

While the national media continues to denigrate the N.C. State job, for the right guy it has everything: glorious, if faded, tradition; resources and facilities; the challenge of coaching in the ACC and going head-to-head with two giants of the game on an annual basis. It’s a great job for someone willing to embrace that challenge.

Lowe resigns according to J.P. Giglio

RALEIGH — N.C. State needs a new basketball coach.

Sidney Lowe resigned on Tuesday, ending his tenure at his alma mater. He went 86-78 in five seasons, with a 25-55 mark in ACC play….

….Arizona coach Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, and Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, who once worked for Roy Williams at Kansas, are expected to be among Yow’s targets.

Picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the preseason, N.C. State posted a disappointing overall record of 15-16 and finished 10th in the ACC (5-11). After Thursday’s first-round loss to Maryland in the ACC tournament, Lowe spoke passionately about his love of the program and the hope for the program’s future.

“This is my school, I love this school,” Lowe said Thursday night in Greensboro. “It was my hope and dream to come back here and do something special again.”

I have to give Giglio credit for describing the program Sidney inherited accurately instead of trumpeting the world renowned “5 straight NCAAs” that so many lazy journalists have used over the years.

A tweet from DraftExpress regarding CJ Leslie:

DraftExpress: Despite Sidney Lowe’s imminent firing at NC State, C.J. Leslie will NOT be entering this year’s NBA draft, sources tell DraftExpress.

Update 1:45 pm

All over the Internet, TV and talk radio different folks are reporting that the anticipated meeting of Debbie Yow and Sidney Lowe ended around 1 pm today. Driving through campus today, I saw news trucks from TWC 14, WTVD11, and of course we all know that WRAL5 is immediately across Western Blvd from the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Building which is also the location of the Dail Basketball Practice Facility. Everyone is perfectly aware of the end result of this meeting, so none of this is actually news. However, these reports certainly represent the official beginning of the search process. Hang on to your hats.

Reports are that a press conference will occur later today.

    Full link

Despite a flurry of Internet reports that Lowe had been fired, the meeting between Yow and Lowe ended just after 1 p.m. and an official announcement was not expected until late Tuesday afternoon.

If we don’t update the site frequently this afternoon, then please continue to the discussions in this entry and provide links to the press conferences, news articles, tweets, etc.

Here is a link to names thrown out by the N&O.

      Earlier entry

NC State basketball is in a time of transition. We all want a resolution yesterday, so we can be excited about having a new coach in place. It’s Human Nature 101 to fill the gap microanalyzing what’s being said (and not said), and freak out a little bit. This morning, I just wanted to remind everyone that there’s no need.

Sidney Lowe will not return for a sixth season as NC State’s baketball coach. Both Yow and Lowe have known this for some time. As we’ve told you (with varying degrees of directness), the lawyers for each side have been working on the paperwork for quite some time. That part is 100% a done deal.

Yow has made the strategic decision that she doesn’t want the job open long. I’m reasonably confident that NC State’s next head coach still has his dancing shoes on. I’m absolutely certain that our top targets all do. Thus, I would be surprised if the Lowe announcement is made before Thursday morning or Friday afternoon (when game action will absorb most of the local and national media energy). I would be equally surprised if we get any new, credible intel on where we stand with our main target(s) until early next week. Any random nonsense that you hear in between now and early next week is likely just that – random nonsense.

Just relax, and remember that responsible adults are in charge this time. What a refreshing change, yes?

I think Roo is talking about Mike Brey (went to DeMatha and played, a la Sidney Lowe).

Don’t know that Brey would be a good choice. I could be wrong though.

This could have been a very ugly situation. I credit Sid and Deb with wearing their big boy pants and taking the high road. The way Sid handled it solidifies even further the place he has in the hearts of wolfpackers.

  3. wooviewolf71 03/15/2011 at 6:18 PM #

First of all I want to say thanks to Sid for bringing us the talent we needed for a bright future at N.C. State. You gave it your best. We as true N.C. State fans our hearts go out to you and wish you the best. Going forward the future of N.C. State mens basketball program now is in Debbie Yows hands. Bring us a winner plain & simple. Me personally I did my own search, reading bios and came up with a list of my own. This is not all thats out there but a start. Some names has already been mention. IMO getting anyone of these guys we would be in good shape.

If you think about it, the way Miller “turned down” the NC State job is the perfect way to do it. He never said a damn thing. Someone close to Miller said it. It’s perfect! All his options are still open.

  5. ClassOf95 03/15/2011 at 6:22 PM #

You guys can laugh it you want but as I said on another thread, I would roll the dice on Geno Auriemma. 7 time national champion. Men vs Women. Pro vs College. Whatever. The guy is a proven winner and a great basketball mind. Did you see his interview with Frank Deford on HBO? He did everything but say he would coach men’s if given the right opportunity. If people around here miss a big Italian personality, well there you go.

  6. PeeDub 03/15/2011 at 6:54 PM #

I will choose to laugh it…

  7. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/15/2011 at 6:57 PM #

Clearly Miller is on the list with Yow announcing that there is one coach on the west coast that you can plop down anywhere and he will win.

Yow may not be aware that Miller may have already broken her golden rule of saying you turned down the state job when it wasn’t offered. Technically he didn’t but letting it out that he isn’t interested (why would he?) in the State job is pretty close to a national NC State insult from the Miller crew.

Her statement was probably directed more towards Lavin and it would lead me to believe that he wouldn’t be high on her list because of his announcement last time.

  8. tractor57 03/15/2011 at 6:59 PM #

After watching the presser I am convinced this search will not repeat the last one
As to who we hire I have no clue but I do trust the administration this time.

  9. SlapAbutch09 03/15/2011 at 6:59 PM #

I still think it must mean something good that we are getting so much attention right now. I have been watching ESPN all day and have been shocked at how much we made it on there. I’m nervous and excited for the job search but i have faith that Debbie will make a smart and great hire.

  10. hoop 03/15/2011 at 7:01 PM #

I think Miller’s “denial” is a win-win. If he’s really not interested, it lets us down early and easy. If he’s not interested, the timing is perfect and keep in mind he is not the source.

If he is interested it keeps Az fans off his back and eliminates distractions for his team and for NC State fans and pundits everywhere. I mean, this isn’t Phil Ford popping off at the mouth.

His “turning us down” is the perfect thing to do, regardless of the eventual outcome.

  11. MrPlywood 03/15/2011 at 7:02 PM #

“Yow announcing that there is one coach on the west coast that you can plop down anywhere and he will win.”

DY actually said that? Sounds like too much information to me. I’d want the press to be in the dark until the cows came home.

  12. hoop 03/15/2011 at 7:07 PM #

Maybe she was talking about Phil Jackson. Seriously. It’s who I thought she meant considering she had specifically mentioned a coach in California (not west coast) who has no recruiting contacts in the southeast.

  13. Fenrir 03/15/2011 at 7:08 PM #

roo… you and i are on the same page.

  14. Boyd 03/15/2011 at 7:10 PM #

Come on Fenrir. Spill the beans. 🙂

p.s. Anyone know why we can’t sign in on the Forums?

  15. JEOH2 03/15/2011 at 7:11 PM #

That wasn’t Miller…she was more likely referencing Mark Few…

in context, she was asked if the coach needed to be regional, and said she thought is was very important to have ties to the region…BUT there was a coach you could “plop down anywhere” (implying he’s NEVER been connected to this region)

  16. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/15/2011 at 7:22 PM #

^^ you are probably right that it was Few and not Miller. Miller isn’t technically west coast which she did say.

  17. tractor57 03/15/2011 at 7:26 PM #

I thought the presser was handled with class by both Yow and Towe.

For me it is a bittersweet day – the change had to be made but I respect what Lowe tried to do. I have no issues with the man but I do have issues with the performance.

Been on both side of that meeting Yow spoke of – not an easy thing for either person. I’m thankful it was handled with class.

  18. motorhead 03/15/2011 at 7:32 PM #

One of the hints was that this mystery man didn’t play college sports. Mike Brey did.

And if it is Few, someone mentioned him after the “clues” yesterday on the Hewitt thread.
Its also why yesterday, I said I’d heard the name a “few” times. Get it?

If its not Mark Few then I don’t know a coach whose bio matches up closer.

Certainly don’t think its a shock though.

  19. LRM 03/15/2011 at 7:33 PM #

Adventuroo and fenrir are talking about Mark Few. Roo just made it confusing with all his hints.

  20. Rochester 03/15/2011 at 7:34 PM #

Why are you guys stroking Roo by playing his guessing game? Give it a rest.

  21. motorhead 03/15/2011 at 7:36 PM #

Not much else to talk about I guess. If it makes their day so be it.

I also learned a lot about some coaches out there. 🙂

  22. packplantpath 03/15/2011 at 8:22 PM #

    Adventuroo=Kennel

Even if it’s not kennel, he posts the same self-important “hey look at me, I’m special” crap.

Beware of the Ides of March…

    Quite the coincidence.

  24. wolfpack4ever 03/15/2011 at 9:56 PM #

AD Yow “gets it”. I will not attempt to quote it exactly. However, she stated the it has been at least 20 years since there was competitive excellence in the NC State basketball program. Ms. Yow is the Athletic Director with everything that NCSU has not had with the likes of Todd Turner and Lee Fowler. Ms. Yow stated that if a candidate was apprehensive of being in the vicinity of Duke and the tarholes that she would end that interview and thank them for their “limited interest” in the position.

That 20 years she mentioned includes all of the 10 glorious years of Herb. 5 years of being on the NCAA “bubble” with the exception of 1 season. Somehow, HWSNBN got in with smoke and mirrors and a weak schedule 4 of those 5 years.

D@#% ESPN on its reporting Sidney Lowe resigns without any trips to the NCAA after HWSNBN went dancing for 5 consecutive years. If Yow’s coaching search is as successful as many of us think it will be, the talking heads can STFU!

I believe that AD Yow and Chancellor Woodson will handle this professionally and make NC State proud. I know that talk is just talk, but what great press conference that was.

  25. McCallum 03/15/2011 at 10:15 PM #

Enough of the Lee Fowler bashing.

I suggest he was stupefied by all the excessive free on line dating.
