Lowe resigns(J.P. Giglio); Decock: NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens

This is both a sad and exciting day for the NC State community. All the authors of Statefansnation would like to thank Sidney Lowe and his staff for their efforts over the last 5 years. We also wish them the best in the future.

Credit goes to rswilli2(poster from www.Packpride.com for this shot of Mr. Wuf after Sidney’s last home game.

I am just adding links as the day progresses. Sorry for the lack of organization. Read from the bottom up if you want to go in chronological order.

Technician reports:

The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.

However, the N.C. State Athletics department deferred questions about possible coaching candidates to Yow.

NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens:

Tom Crean has the recruiting pipeline open at Indiana. Purdue’s Matt Painter isn’t going anywhere. John Belein is hanging on at Michigan. So while Stevens may prefer to be patient, he shouldn’t wait until his moment has passed. Butler, after all, didn’t win the Horizon regular-season title this year and had to win its way into the NCAA tournament. The mid-major pyramid is not a stable one; the team at the top can topple at any time.

So if not the Big Ten, where? Why not the ACC? Why not N.C. State?

While the national media continues to denigrate the N.C. State job, for the right guy it has everything: glorious, if faded, tradition; resources and facilities; the challenge of coaching in the ACC and going head-to-head with two giants of the game on an annual basis. It’s a great job for someone willing to embrace that challenge.

Lowe resigns according to J.P. Giglio

RALEIGH — N.C. State needs a new basketball coach.

Sidney Lowe resigned on Tuesday, ending his tenure at his alma mater. He went 86-78 in five seasons, with a 25-55 mark in ACC play….

….Arizona coach Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, and Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, who once worked for Roy Williams at Kansas, are expected to be among Yow’s targets.

Picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the preseason, N.C. State posted a disappointing overall record of 15-16 and finished 10th in the ACC (5-11). After Thursday’s first-round loss to Maryland in the ACC tournament, Lowe spoke passionately about his love of the program and the hope for the program’s future.

“This is my school, I love this school,” Lowe said Thursday night in Greensboro. “It was my hope and dream to come back here and do something special again.”

I have to give Giglio credit for describing the program Sidney inherited accurately instead of trumpeting the world renowned “5 straight NCAAs” that so many lazy journalists have used over the years.

A tweet from DraftExpress regarding CJ Leslie:

DraftExpress: Despite Sidney Lowe’s imminent firing at NC State, C.J. Leslie will NOT be entering this year’s NBA draft, sources tell DraftExpress.

Update 1:45 pm

All over the Internet, TV and talk radio different folks are reporting that the anticipated meeting of Debbie Yow and Sidney Lowe ended around 1 pm today. Driving through campus today, I saw news trucks from TWC 14, WTVD11, and of course we all know that WRAL5 is immediately across Western Blvd from the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Building which is also the location of the Dail Basketball Practice Facility. Everyone is perfectly aware of the end result of this meeting, so none of this is actually news. However, these reports certainly represent the official beginning of the search process. Hang on to your hats.

Reports are that a press conference will occur later today.

    Full link

Despite a flurry of Internet reports that Lowe had been fired, the meeting between Yow and Lowe ended just after 1 p.m. and an official announcement was not expected until late Tuesday afternoon.

If we don’t update the site frequently this afternoon, then please continue to the discussions in this entry and provide links to the press conferences, news articles, tweets, etc.

Here is a link to names thrown out by the N&O.

      Earlier entry

NC State basketball is in a time of transition. We all want a resolution yesterday, so we can be excited about having a new coach in place. It’s Human Nature 101 to fill the gap microanalyzing what’s being said (and not said), and freak out a little bit. This morning, I just wanted to remind everyone that there’s no need.

Sidney Lowe will not return for a sixth season as NC State’s baketball coach. Both Yow and Lowe have known this for some time. As we’ve told you (with varying degrees of directness), the lawyers for each side have been working on the paperwork for quite some time. That part is 100% a done deal.

Yow has made the strategic decision that she doesn’t want the job open long. I’m reasonably confident that NC State’s next head coach still has his dancing shoes on. I’m absolutely certain that our top targets all do. Thus, I would be surprised if the Lowe announcement is made before Thursday morning or Friday afternoon (when game action will absorb most of the local and national media energy). I would be equally surprised if we get any new, credible intel on where we stand with our main target(s) until early next week. Any random nonsense that you hear in between now and early next week is likely just that – random nonsense.

Just relax, and remember that responsible adults are in charge this time. What a refreshing change, yes?

Hey Roo – why not just give up the name? What’s with the riddles? Do you actually think that you’ll forward an idea that hasn’t been spoken of before?

  2. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 4:15 PM #

    NOPE….

However the coach that I was TOLD about is 1 & 2 against one of the ACC Coaches….in a previous life.

    Ain’t the internet wonderful?

    Have at it folks…..

  3. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 4:18 PM #

    Mr. Plywood,

Folks guessing don’t count. The “riddles” that are here tell the whole story….The name is here.

Fenrir only has to say YES or NO….

No sense getting the folks all worked up over nothing….which is probably what this is….

I will await more “clues” myself to see if my name is gaining traction.

  4. kbrown 03/15/2011 at 4:20 PM #

I love how posters on this message board act like they are stuck in the 5th grade. I heard something about you today but I can’t tell you what it is. Well damn it shut your mouth if you aren’t going to tell me. There is no need to say anything if you aren’t going to share the entire story. I wish everybody would just sit back and let the search run it’s course and then let them announce the new coach. We can then discuss the new hire. I find it hard to believe anybody that posts on here actually knows who is going to get hired.

  5. anthonygrundle 03/15/2011 at 4:25 PM #

You’re right kbrown. Neither Roo nor Fenrir have a damn clue. They like making things up

  6. mafpack 03/15/2011 at 4:31 PM #

Where is the ‘like’ button on this thing… I want to like kbrown’s last comment.

  7. tvopack 03/15/2011 at 4:34 PM #

Adventuroo and Fenrir are trolling all of you guys. Just sit back and relax.

Adventuroo, please stop posting and trying to communicate with Fenrir. Are you two the same guy? I wonder.

  8. ILpackfan 03/15/2011 at 4:34 PM #

This was probably the best political move for both sides. Sidney steps down on his own, the administration doesn’t have to fire him, and everyone involved saves face.

I’ll miss Sid for what he did as part of the 1983 Cardiac Pack, and I honestly wish it could have turned out better for him and his teams. He’s leaving the team in better shape than the one that he found back in 2006. That’s saying something, at least. Now let’s hire somebody who can finish in the top half of the conference.

  9. Wulfpack 03/15/2011 at 4:35 PM #

Roo was just telling us on another thread yesterday that Yow was considering not making a change, so take whatever he has to say with a fine grain of salt…

“I believe that she is really trying hard to find a suitable replacement and not just CHANGE for the SAKE of CHANGE…..and, if I am correct in that, then she is also weighing the pros and cons of NO CHANGE.”

“This will not set well with a lot of folks….but they, at least in the circles that I frequented in Greensboro, were in the minority. The VOCAL Majority sometimes does not represent the REAL Majority (folks that write checks)….so who knows which way this will go.”

  10. MrPlywood 03/15/2011 at 4:50 PM #

“and my name may well be in error” ‘nuf said…

  11. bradleyb123 03/15/2011 at 4:51 PM #

but he had better be thinking about his upcoming game.

You’ve said this at least twice now. I believe this is a subtle hint. He’s coaching a team that is playing a very good team, so he better focus on that. But that also says to me he’s not so much a BIG NAME guy. It says, I believe, that his team is PLAYING a team that is coached by a big name guy.

  12. pack44fan 03/15/2011 at 4:53 PM #

Almost every coach in the field of 68 has been mentioned as a replacement for Lowe. I doubt seriously the University went in to the process “blindly” considering the last coaching search. I hope this search is tight lipped and anyone in the administration who “leaks” information is dealt with accordingly.

  13. bradleyb123 03/15/2011 at 4:54 PM #

But ROO, why play these games? You’re an anonymous blogger. Why not just name the name. I don’t really care about playing a game I may never know if I won or not. So I will bow out of this one.

I was into the speculation about what would happen with Sidney. But I really just want to know the final answer to the question. If someone knows an intriguing name, I would like to hear it just for kicks. But I’m more interested in the eventual press conference where we announce our new coach.

  14. wolfmanmat 03/15/2011 at 4:56 PM #

Sidney left the program as an 8 and took over a 2? Do what? He NEVER made a tourney after taking over a team that had made 5 straight. People want to say “he recruited well.” That’s bull too. He got 2 McDonalds All Americans, 1 less than Herb. Sure, he got some solid 3 star guys and a couple low 4 stars, but his biggest recruit was 1 and done. If you can’t get 3-4 star guys in the ACC, you just aren’t trying, so don’t give me that “he could recruit” stuff. He leaves the program barely slightly better than he took over.

@garywichard ……..Gary passed away late last week?^Roo :thanks for what? Taking the money? Going 22-55 ? How do you resign with a record like that? Capel was fired compare their records.
Hey great player for us ,great guy if you say so I am sure he is,but terrible coach . I would thank Sid if he left 2 years ago he hung on and cashed his check.

  18. NCSUPackfan 03/15/2011 at 5:21 PM #

wolfmanmat — you are psycho. We have so much more talent now, was it coached well..no, but our level is certainly better.

  19. ms termeaner 03/15/2011 at 5:28 PM #

I graduate in may ,just wish this was done a few years sooner. My small circle of friends never missed a football game. Basketball we never went after our freshman years.

  20. LRM 03/15/2011 at 5:29 PM #

Look, Roo is clearly talking about Mark Few.

About the SAME age as Coach Lowe. check

Was a Star HS Point Guard. check

Has been a Head Coach for 10 years and guess HOW many times he took his team to the NCAA? check

Never played COLLEGE Basketball…nor ANY Collegiate sport. check

Only Coached at ONE School and LIKES his neck of the woods…which ain’t CLOSE to Raleigh. check

    perennial NCAA participant. check

Few is a great coach. That doesn’t mean Roo knows what he’s talking about, considering he called Few a “relative unknown,” even though he’s been a household name among college basketball fans for a decade, when Gonzaga stopped being a cinderella and started underachieving every season. EVERYONE knows who Mark Few is — he’s the hot name for every high profile job of the past five years.

    The guessing game is over.

  21. eas 03/15/2011 at 5:31 PM #

    Press conference…..what channel at 6pm?

  22. PoppaJohn 03/15/2011 at 5:42 PM #

    6:30 on WRAL

  23. leewolf 03/15/2011 at 5:43 PM #

The Miller story from U of A is exactly what any current HC would be saying right now…and Miller didn’t even say it!

I’m not putting any stock into any denials by any coach for ANY job at this point, as long as their school is still playing.

  24. eas 03/15/2011 at 5:45 PM #

    Thanks Poppajohn

    In re: Sean Miller…

We all know what Roy said about Carowhina while he was still with Kansas in the Final 4.

    Just sayin…
