Lowe resigns(J.P. Giglio); Decock: NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens

This is both a sad and exciting day for the NC State community. All the authors of Statefansnation would like to thank Sidney Lowe and his staff for their efforts over the last 5 years. We also wish them the best in the future.

Credit goes to rswilli2(poster from www.Packpride.com for this shot of Mr. Wuf after Sidney’s last home game.

I am just adding links as the day progresses. Sorry for the lack of organization. Read from the bottom up if you want to go in chronological order.

Technician reports:

The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.

However, the N.C. State Athletics department deferred questions about possible coaching candidates to Yow.

NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens:

Tom Crean has the recruiting pipeline open at Indiana. Purdue’s Matt Painter isn’t going anywhere. John Belein is hanging on at Michigan. So while Stevens may prefer to be patient, he shouldn’t wait until his moment has passed. Butler, after all, didn’t win the Horizon regular-season title this year and had to win its way into the NCAA tournament. The mid-major pyramid is not a stable one; the team at the top can topple at any time.

So if not the Big Ten, where? Why not the ACC? Why not N.C. State?

While the national media continues to denigrate the N.C. State job, for the right guy it has everything: glorious, if faded, tradition; resources and facilities; the challenge of coaching in the ACC and going head-to-head with two giants of the game on an annual basis. It’s a great job for someone willing to embrace that challenge.

Lowe resigns according to J.P. Giglio

RALEIGH — N.C. State needs a new basketball coach.

Sidney Lowe resigned on Tuesday, ending his tenure at his alma mater. He went 86-78 in five seasons, with a 25-55 mark in ACC play….

….Arizona coach Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, and Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, who once worked for Roy Williams at Kansas, are expected to be among Yow’s targets.

Picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the preseason, N.C. State posted a disappointing overall record of 15-16 and finished 10th in the ACC (5-11). After Thursday’s first-round loss to Maryland in the ACC tournament, Lowe spoke passionately about his love of the program and the hope for the program’s future.

“This is my school, I love this school,” Lowe said Thursday night in Greensboro. “It was my hope and dream to come back here and do something special again.”

I have to give Giglio credit for describing the program Sidney inherited accurately instead of trumpeting the world renowned “5 straight NCAAs” that so many lazy journalists have used over the years.

A tweet from DraftExpress regarding CJ Leslie:

DraftExpress: Despite Sidney Lowe’s imminent firing at NC State, C.J. Leslie will NOT be entering this year’s NBA draft, sources tell DraftExpress.

Update 1:45 pm

All over the Internet, TV and talk radio different folks are reporting that the anticipated meeting of Debbie Yow and Sidney Lowe ended around 1 pm today. Driving through campus today, I saw news trucks from TWC 14, WTVD11, and of course we all know that WRAL5 is immediately across Western Blvd from the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Building which is also the location of the Dail Basketball Practice Facility. Everyone is perfectly aware of the end result of this meeting, so none of this is actually news. However, these reports certainly represent the official beginning of the search process. Hang on to your hats.

Reports are that a press conference will occur later today.

    Full link

Despite a flurry of Internet reports that Lowe had been fired, the meeting between Yow and Lowe ended just after 1 p.m. and an official announcement was not expected until late Tuesday afternoon.

If we don’t update the site frequently this afternoon, then please continue to the discussions in this entry and provide links to the press conferences, news articles, tweets, etc.

Here is a link to names thrown out by the N&O.

      Earlier entry

NC State basketball is in a time of transition. We all want a resolution yesterday, so we can be excited about having a new coach in place. It’s Human Nature 101 to fill the gap microanalyzing what’s being said (and not said), and freak out a little bit. This morning, I just wanted to remind everyone that there’s no need.

Sidney Lowe will not return for a sixth season as NC State’s baketball coach. Both Yow and Lowe have known this for some time. As we’ve told you (with varying degrees of directness), the lawyers for each side have been working on the paperwork for quite some time. That part is 100% a done deal.

Yow has made the strategic decision that she doesn’t want the job open long. I’m reasonably confident that NC State’s next head coach still has his dancing shoes on. I’m absolutely certain that our top targets all do. Thus, I would be surprised if the Lowe announcement is made before Thursday morning or Friday afternoon (when game action will absorb most of the local and national media energy). I would be equally surprised if we get any new, credible intel on where we stand with our main target(s) until early next week. Any random nonsense that you hear in between now and early next week is likely just that – random nonsense.

Just relax, and remember that responsible adults are in charge this time. What a refreshing change, yes?

    ^ . . . and have an amphibious coach!

  2. heavy 03/15/2011 at 3:13 PM #

    Izzo?

  3. PackerInRussia 03/15/2011 at 3:15 PM #

“I would just LOVE for the national media to comment on the fact that Brey and Purnell have already expressed interest.”

They’ll probably say that we should take either of them as quickly as possible before the drugs that they’re on wear off and we’d be fools not to. After all, we can’t be picky given our past.

  4. triadwolf 03/15/2011 at 3:17 PM #

^Izzo is interesting; Pitino is a name that would certainly be a 10 and certainly be a surprise.

There I go again getting caught up in the hype.

  5. nav 03/15/2011 at 3:18 PM #

I don’t understand how State became the national whipping boys for the media. Face it guys, no matter what we do we will still be a failure in the eyes of the national media.

  6. GoldenChain 03/15/2011 at 3:18 PM #

Izzo down sides to me are 1) Would he come and if he did 2) would he stay? He’s a Michigan boy and has spent his whole life there. Might not take to the humidity 3) He already makes $3mil.
But hey, I would feel bad if he came…until he left.

  7. nav 03/15/2011 at 3:19 PM #

And, should the Technician be throwing out names already. I know they want hits but I don’t see how that serves our best interest.

  8. PackerInRussia 03/15/2011 at 3:19 PM #

I can’t reveal my sources, but I’ll give you a hint on the new head coach. His first name rhymes with “bike” and his last name rhymes with “flyrshrefshki.”

“I would just LOVE for the national media to comment on the fact that Brey and Purnell have already expressed interest.”

here’s what will happen. Those coaches will respond with “I have no interest in that job” and then the media will laugh at all the coaches who don’t want our crappy job…delusional fans, etc. I fear we will end up looking foolish before this whole thing is over. hope i’m wrong

  11. heavy 03/15/2011 at 3:27 PM #

If its Izzo, I would really be floored. For all the reasons GC listed, I would see him as a longer shot than Pitino. I would put him in the Calhoun, Roy Williams, Coach K, Boeheim: ‘Not Going Anyhwere for Anything Club’. Maybe it is Pitino, trying to help clean up the mess his son Herb made here for 10 years.

Poppajohn is right. Fenrir is dragging us along with no earthly clue who the next hire will be, just like the rest of us. Pay no mind to bloviating jacka$$es

  13. Daily Update 03/15/2011 at 3:31 PM #

    Izzo ain’t coming here.

  14. triadwolf 03/15/2011 at 3:33 PM #

^Normally I’d agree with you, but Fenrir can only claim he was right if about 1 of 10 guys is hired. There are not that many guys we’ll consider “10’s”. We can’t end up with Mark Turgeon and have him claim that was the guy. Turgeon will be a great hire, but does not fit in with the criteria he’s more than hinted to.

  15. Gowolves 03/15/2011 at 3:35 PM #

^DU-You are right. Izzo just got through holding MSU up for ransom a few years ago and got himself a new contract.

  16. newt 03/15/2011 at 3:37 PM #

Guys, it’s okay to dream, but please stop talking crazy. It’s embarassing.

  17. nycfan 03/15/2011 at 3:38 PM #

To close the books on Lowe’s tenure, I give you the curiously similar first 5 years of Sendek and 5 years of Lowe. Strangely Sendek was not fired after that first 5 years, but it is stranger still that State had to virtually relive those first five years all over again through Lowe:

1997: 17-15 (4-12), ACC Finals (lost to UNC), NIT 2nd Round (lost to WVU)
2007: 20-16 (5-11), ACC Finals (lost to UNC), NIT 3rd Round (lost to WVU)

1998: 17-15 (5-11), ACCT first round, NIT second round
2008: 15-16 (4-12), ACCT first round, no NIT

1999: 19-14 (6-10), ACC Semis, NIT second round
2009: 16-14 (6-10), ACC first round, no NIT

2000: 20-14 (6-10), ACC Semis, NIT Final Four (lost twice)
2010: 20-16 (5-11), ACC Semis, NIT Second Round

2001: 13-15 (5-11), ACC first round, no NIT
2011: 15-16 (5-11), ACC first round, no NIT

    That is almost uncanny.

    ***************************
As for the coaching search, I honestly don’t think Izzo is looking around for a rebuilding opportunity. But I do expect State to land a quality, experienced coach.

Pitino is too much of a job hopper…yeah I said it.

I like this, especially the ending:

That’s Marvin Austin at a gun show for those who didn’t know. LOL
For some reason it won show on the Forum side.

  21. ringo 03/15/2011 at 3:45 PM #

Mike Brey would be hard to turn down. Dude has a bunch of scrubs in the top 10. Ceiling would be higher here. Just hitting his stride and would outlast K and Roy, could slip in at the top when the changes are made.

  22. Sweet jumper 03/15/2011 at 3:46 PM #

Best wishes to Sid, Monte, et. al. Thanks for trying. Sid has definitely left the new coach with a talented, deep roster that could do great things over the next couple of years with the proper leadership. Now DY and Woodson need to hit a home run. Go Pack!

  23. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 3:48 PM #

Most of your regulars know that I really am a Sid Supporter….and he is gone and that is that.

He has left the program on a scale of 1 to 10 in at least an 8….as compared to what he inherited, which was a 2. For THAT, the entire Wolfpack Nation OUGHT to be thankful and we owe him a debt of gratitude for restoring our recruiting.

    Fenrir,

I am waivering on my info, which you obviously if we are talking about the same guy, have figured out.

I don’t know that the AD has $3,000,000….BUT if she does, then the “insider” that told me was right. SO, we will wait and see.

No one picked up the coded name that I left, twice….so we shall just get on with it.

I certainly hope that we get a coach of the caliber to use the talent that we have and turn them into an ACC Title Contender next year…..the name that was given to me is a proven winner….just don’t know if he will leave his comfy place of residence and take on Mikey and Roy and a few others…..he knows what it like to coach against one of our coaches….so who knows….

Would someone please publish Murphy’s two plane’s tail ID’s so I can get my “deluxe” version of Flight Tracker going again….by now, they probably have a iPhone Ap for that.

    GO PACK….Thank you Coach Lowe.

    Lee Folwer never gets old:

“@garywichard hey, if any of your basketball clients want a shot at this one, you’d better answer your damn phone. call me asap”

  25. Boyd 03/15/2011 at 4:01 PM #

“he knows what it like to coach against one of our coaches”

So he’s coached in the Big 12?
