Lowe resigns(J.P. Giglio); Decock: NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens

This is both a sad and exciting day for the NC State community. All the authors of Statefansnation would like to thank Sidney Lowe and his staff for their efforts over the last 5 years. We also wish them the best in the future.

Credit goes to rswilli2(poster from www.Packpride.com for this shot of Mr. Wuf after Sidney’s last home game.

I am just adding links as the day progresses. Sorry for the lack of organization. Read from the bottom up if you want to go in chronological order.

Technician reports:

The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.

However, the N.C. State Athletics department deferred questions about possible coaching candidates to Yow.

NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens:

Tom Crean has the recruiting pipeline open at Indiana. Purdue’s Matt Painter isn’t going anywhere. John Belein is hanging on at Michigan. So while Stevens may prefer to be patient, he shouldn’t wait until his moment has passed. Butler, after all, didn’t win the Horizon regular-season title this year and had to win its way into the NCAA tournament. The mid-major pyramid is not a stable one; the team at the top can topple at any time.

So if not the Big Ten, where? Why not the ACC? Why not N.C. State?

While the national media continues to denigrate the N.C. State job, for the right guy it has everything: glorious, if faded, tradition; resources and facilities; the challenge of coaching in the ACC and going head-to-head with two giants of the game on an annual basis. It’s a great job for someone willing to embrace that challenge.

Lowe resigns according to J.P. Giglio

RALEIGH — N.C. State needs a new basketball coach.

Sidney Lowe resigned on Tuesday, ending his tenure at his alma mater. He went 86-78 in five seasons, with a 25-55 mark in ACC play….

….Arizona coach Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, and Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, who once worked for Roy Williams at Kansas, are expected to be among Yow’s targets.

Picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the preseason, N.C. State posted a disappointing overall record of 15-16 and finished 10th in the ACC (5-11). After Thursday’s first-round loss to Maryland in the ACC tournament, Lowe spoke passionately about his love of the program and the hope for the program’s future.

“This is my school, I love this school,” Lowe said Thursday night in Greensboro. “It was my hope and dream to come back here and do something special again.”

I have to give Giglio credit for describing the program Sidney inherited accurately instead of trumpeting the world renowned “5 straight NCAAs” that so many lazy journalists have used over the years.

A tweet from DraftExpress regarding CJ Leslie:

DraftExpress: Despite Sidney Lowe’s imminent firing at NC State, C.J. Leslie will NOT be entering this year’s NBA draft, sources tell DraftExpress.

Update 1:45 pm

All over the Internet, TV and talk radio different folks are reporting that the anticipated meeting of Debbie Yow and Sidney Lowe ended around 1 pm today. Driving through campus today, I saw news trucks from TWC 14, WTVD11, and of course we all know that WRAL5 is immediately across Western Blvd from the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Building which is also the location of the Dail Basketball Practice Facility. Everyone is perfectly aware of the end result of this meeting, so none of this is actually news. However, these reports certainly represent the official beginning of the search process. Hang on to your hats.

Reports are that a press conference will occur later today.

    Full link

Despite a flurry of Internet reports that Lowe had been fired, the meeting between Yow and Lowe ended just after 1 p.m. and an official announcement was not expected until late Tuesday afternoon.

If we don’t update the site frequently this afternoon, then please continue to the discussions in this entry and provide links to the press conferences, news articles, tweets, etc.

Here is a link to names thrown out by the N&O.

      Earlier entry

NC State basketball is in a time of transition. We all want a resolution yesterday, so we can be excited about having a new coach in place. It’s Human Nature 101 to fill the gap microanalyzing what’s being said (and not said), and freak out a little bit. This morning, I just wanted to remind everyone that there’s no need.

Sidney Lowe will not return for a sixth season as NC State’s baketball coach. Both Yow and Lowe have known this for some time. As we’ve told you (with varying degrees of directness), the lawyers for each side have been working on the paperwork for quite some time. That part is 100% a done deal.

Yow has made the strategic decision that she doesn’t want the job open long. I’m reasonably confident that NC State’s next head coach still has his dancing shoes on. I’m absolutely certain that our top targets all do. Thus, I would be surprised if the Lowe announcement is made before Thursday morning or Friday afternoon (when game action will absorb most of the local and national media energy). I would be equally surprised if we get any new, credible intel on where we stand with our main target(s) until early next week. Any random nonsense that you hear in between now and early next week is likely just that – random nonsense.

Just relax, and remember that responsible adults are in charge this time. What a refreshing change, yes?

“Fenrir – you say the name has not been mentioned and it will shock everyone. You may not get my reference. Shall our team get ready to go to “war” and strap on a helmet? If you understand my reference and that is what you believe…then that would shock everyone. Not sure why he would want out except that his state is declining fast.”

I think *you’re* talking about Tom Izzo…or maybe Mike Brey.

  2. bigjake1708 03/15/2011 at 2:16 PM #

I’m pretty sure i would give Sidney an ovation if he ever comes back to a game. and i also dont see upsides to purnell and brey. Breys record is basically that of a consistent bubble team year in and out. and if you go to Purnells records, they dont inspire courage.

  3. bone7483 03/15/2011 at 2:18 PM #

Sautz – I know nothing and am speculating on Fenrir’s previous posts. I have not idea if he knows anything. However, the person I’m thinking of would be a 10 easily. He would be better than Roy and just under K. I am by no means claiming that Yow is even thinking of him or if he would even think of making a change.

What he has done where he is currently is a perfect fit for us in my opinion, but never gave it any thought. I still wouldn’t believe it until an official announce was made.

  4. bTHEredterror 03/15/2011 at 2:18 PM #

    Maybe Mike Brey?

  5. mwcric 03/15/2011 at 2:19 PM #

It really is a bittersweet occasion, akin to (though not even in the same ballpark as) seeing a loved one pass away from cancer. You’re sad to see them go, but you’re also glad the suffering is over. Maybe that’s too extreme. Maybe it’s like seeing your kid go through his/her first bad breakup, but you didn’t like the boyfriend/girlfriend anyway. You feel badly for your kid, but at the same time you’re glad things turned out the way they did.

Anyway, I wish Coach Lowe the best. Regardless of the shortcomings over the last five years, it’d be difficult to find a classier, more approachable, passionate individual.

Another decent article from Tudor: ‘Lowe was a gamble from the start’

  7. hoop 03/15/2011 at 2:27 PM #

Why is this not on the SFN twitter feed? I’ve missed this info for over an hour!

  8. PoppaJohn 03/15/2011 at 2:27 PM #

Oliver Purnell ???? That name sounds familiar . Don’t think he’ll get a call back.

Brey’s been good for a while, but never great in my mind. I think he’s hit his plateau. I’m hoping for someone that we think has an unlimited upside.

  9. Daily Update 03/15/2011 at 2:33 PM #

Hoop: Because we are updating the same entry. Also, our main twitter guy is on the Left Coast offline. The rest of us aren’t as advanced as him.

  10. eas 03/15/2011 at 2:36 PM #

I don’t like the Brey or Purnell option at all! Especially Purnell. Great press but that is it.

  11. PoppaJohn 03/15/2011 at 2:45 PM #

Turgeon the Surgeon!!! I like the sound of that. Of course “Miller the Killer” is pretty good too.

    Exciting times …

  12. Pack Bombers 03/15/2011 at 2:47 PM #

Oliver Purnell would be a horrible choice!! Horrible!! And some on WRAL have mentioned Dino Gaudio. WTF!!!

  13. PackMan97 03/15/2011 at 2:47 PM #

Thank you for putting your heart and soul into this job the past 5 seasons, Coach Lowe! We’ll always have 1983 and no one can take that away from us!

I for one would give Sidney Lowe a standing O’ at any game he attended. I have nothing but respect for him as a Wolfpacker. He’s always given his best. As a player, that was worth our second NCAA title…as a coach, we’ll…let’s just forget about that.

I find it refreshing that coaches have already expressed interest in the job. I think that we present a MUCH different job this time around. Our roster is stable with a mix of talent and experience. We still have great fans. We have an AD and Chancellor who both have a reputation for winning. NC State fans showed that they’ll support a coach during rough times (both Lowe and TOB). Coach K and Roy Boy are both over 60 and won’t be around forever. The ACC has a huge power vacuum right now just waiting for the right coach to come in and challenge the blues.

I can’t say I’d like Brey or Purnell either, but if Yow and Woodson want them, I’ll trust their judgment. They’ve both earned my trust based on their performance so far.

  14. LRM 03/15/2011 at 2:48 PM #

“The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.”

Coaches are expressing interest? Wait now, I thought this was a job no one wanted and we should’ve all just been happy with Herb Sendek.

  15. Pack Bombers 03/15/2011 at 2:48 PM #

I’ll say two things. Why the love affair with Sid? He was a bad hire caused by Lee Fowler’s ineptitude and we shouldn’t be shocked at the record he posted given his NBA head coach record of 79-228. Guess he actually improved some. But he made a ton of money, compared to most ordinary fans and citizens, and got to do something most of us would cut off a finger to do. So I feel bad for him but the pity party’s getting old. Let’s talk about who’s next.

  16. eas 03/15/2011 at 2:50 PM #

I don’t see anyway possible we would be interested in Purnell. Well….Maybe it’s just me.

  17. Wulfpack 03/15/2011 at 2:51 PM #

Exactly my point LRM. Thanks for clarifying my statement. I’m not saying Brey or Purnell is the guy. But it is proof that there are suitors.

  18. eas 03/15/2011 at 2:52 PM #

Plenty of people are interested in 3 million dollars a year.

  19. PoppaJohn 03/15/2011 at 2:54 PM #

If Fenir won’t share what he is talking about, I have to assume he’d prefer to just say “see, I was right” no matter the result.

  20. howlie 03/15/2011 at 2:55 PM #

Purnell better find himself another job as quick as he can before he loses the one he has… DePaul has higher expectations than Clemson, & if he thinks they are lower here, he’s a very confused man.

  21. drizzlewolf 03/15/2011 at 2:58 PM #

please no OP. he would be a step DOWN from Sid. He couldnt get Clemson anywhere, he sure cant get State anywhere

  22. nav 03/15/2011 at 3:01 PM #

Brey did an outstanding job at ND this year.

  23. GoldenChain 03/15/2011 at 3:01 PM #

I want someone who has great upside potiential. I’d love Sean but I’m not seeing it (in yr 2 he probably has a big buy-out, plus he freakin owns the Pac-10 now).
I like Chris Mack (Xavier) or Greg Marshall (Wichita). Guys with large futures.
Marshall has been a Carolinas guy his whole life and would have no trouble picking up teh recruiting trail.

  24. GoldenChain 03/15/2011 at 3:06 PM #

….or we could stay in the family and go with Cozell McQueen!

  25. old13 03/15/2011 at 3:10 PM #

    ^ . . . and have an anphibious coach!
