Here…we…go!! (7:15pm update)

We hope that you have noticed the cautious manner with which we have ‘covered’ the current NC State Basketball coaching situation.

Quite frankly, there hasn’t been anything to really ‘cover’ yet, and we are not just going to write a lot of nonesense just for the sake of writing.  We are not going to pass off speculation as “inside information.”  This is in contrast to other websites that may look to exploit the current situation to generate pageviews and premium memberships.

Despite what oblivious media members may say, I am stepping out on a limb and predicting that NC State will have a coach in place before next weekend.

As ‘ushum’ said on our message boards:

things are starting to heat up for real now, this week is going to be a blast…everything before now was just qualifying, this week is the daytona 500..

Ushum is correct.  Everything we know points to the fact that almost all of the quote-unquote “information” out in the public arena up through yesterday has been bullshit — tales told by message board idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.  Likely much of this “information” has been put out (or has been allowed to stay out) for the purpose of misdirection.

SFN has learned that State committed early on to give interviews to certain coaches (2 big-name coaches in particular), and those interviews had not been able to happen as of yesterday.  Until those interviews happened, the process could not begin to unfold.  However, given the way the games have played out this weekend, the process can now begin to develop, and we expect it to develop very quickly. (Understand that when I say “interview,” the contacts may not take the form of traditional sit-down meetings.)

So, now that everything can begin, let’s take a look at what is going on this morning.  These items were posted as Tweets on the Sports Illustrated website this morning

@LakeRosenberg Ben considered DePaul last year. He would absolutely consider Texas.

@goodmanonfox @GottliebShow Here’s a list of folks who would consider Texas: Everybody except K , Roy and Self.

Hmmm.  Why would there be such specific speculation about the Texas job, and why just now?  Expect a lot more of this type of information to be flying around in the next couple days.  Much of it will require a lot more analysis than the “traditional local media” can give — they tend to jump on the hot name de jour and write endlessly about that one guy until the next name pops up, when they switch to writing about him.  The situation is much more complex than that.

Stay tuned to SFN as we try to make sense and explain the information as it develops over the next week (or less).

***4:00 Update***
Some very recent tweets highlight the new direction and pace of this story — as we expected.  Here is the most notable.

Tim Brando’s Twitter has this:

On the ground at home and hearing some rumblings about a potential knockout hire at NCST.Unlike the last search this one not as public.Smart 30 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

——————————————-

***6:00 Update***
From SFN: I just noticed that a lot of people are reading/interpreting our original comments as some kind of a nod to Rick Barnes. Please allow me to be more clear — that is NOT our intent. Our previous comments were designed to explain that the first two weeks of NCAA Tournament play served almost as ‘gating’ items for our search — not to focus on Barnes.

Brando’s tweet refers to a rumor that has been out there for a while about a HOME RUN NAME that has been discretely kept on the down-low. That jives exactly with our point that things get started in earnest NOW.

Ultimately, we expect NC State will either nail one of three BIG NAMES in the next week…or we will end up on “List Two”. The morons that have been reporting that NC State was already on some kind of second list (with names like Shaka Smart and others) just shows how much they know — nada.

***7:15 Update***
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that (supposed) possible N.C. State target Chris Mooney has signed a 10-year extension with Richmond (AJC.com link). Scratch him off the list of potential B-list candidates.

Heard from my source the code names for them are: High profiles (Willie Monovan and Bick Rarnes), and one on “The List” (Tred Belevens), and still “in the hunt”, a certain popular Lite beer but not Bud. Be careful with the infos, could be rumors, of course. Please keep it a little hush hush.

Everyone’s F5 key is about to be raped….HARD

  5. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 7:03 PM #

i seriously doubt someone was on campus but that would be great. when’s the presser?

  6. Wufpacker 03/27/2011 at 7:05 PM #

Just wanted to say that local news here (Phoenix area) just talked at length about U of A, etc., including Derrick Williams to or not to NBA. FWIW they did NOT mention Sean Miller in any way, including not mentioning anything about him having signed a contract extension one way or another.

    Not sayin’, just sayin’.

Jeff Goodman reporting Cuonzo Martin will replace Bruce Pearl at Tennessee.

  8. wufpup76 03/27/2011 at 7:10 PM #

Just in case anyone is not lurking on the forums:

Cuonzo Martin hired at UT per EspnNews.

  9. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 7:11 PM #

if that kid does bolt for the nba.. miller might want to take a look at nc state..

  10. Boyd 03/27/2011 at 7:12 PM #

There is no way in hell that Derrick Williams is staying. He’s projected as a 1 or 2 pick. Your stock can’t grow any higher.

  11. mwcric 03/27/2011 at 7:12 PM #

Tennessee got Cuonzo Martin. LOL – suckers! Imagine, hiring an up-and-comer instead of a 56-year-old on the downslope of a career! Cuz, you know, it’s way more important to get a name to prove the media wrong than take a gamble on a quality young coach eager to prove himself.

  12. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 7:16 PM #

my vote is for the name, then sean miller! i still consider him as a young coach.. but name first please.

  13. Lunatic Fringe 03/27/2011 at 7:23 PM #

I am amazed how quickly people jump to conclusions with ZERO concrete information. Let it play out before you bad mouth our prospective hire.

Mooney – I was never worried about him coming to NC State, but maybe we can stop talking about him.

  14. gtspack 03/27/2011 at 7:24 PM #

Wolfy__79, Sean is both name and young. Perfect for us.

  15. Boyd 03/27/2011 at 7:26 PM #

Hopefully Greg Marshall gets hired somewhere so we can stop talking about him too.

For the last 25 years plus we as a fan base have had nothing to cheer for and we feel as though we are entitled to a big name. We have a good group coming back next year as well as some talented freshman. I would love Donovan or Miller but if neither of those 2 want to come then I would prefer Shaka Smart over any other Coach. He is young, smart and eager for his chance at the big boys. I want that fire on the sideline like Valvano was when he was the Coach. So lets just relax, breathe and let this play out. I am excited to see what Yow does and look forward to next year……

Well this tournament seems to be working out great for us. All the “Big Names” are out and Stevens and Smart are in until Saturday at least. We can spend this week going after the Names and talk to Stevens and Smart next weekend. Please Tenn chooses their coach and Georgia Tech is close between no one on our list. We probably only have 10 days or so left at the most.

“We could have Jesus as our coach and people would complain that he is too polarizing.”

You need to run that one by Noah first!!

The final test of the two candidates today that were on campus was given at Harrelson Hall.

The two had to compete and figure out how to get to the top floor the fastest, go to the bathroom w/o being spied upon by perverts, then find a place to park on Hillsborough Street!

    And the winner was……………………

6:15 update (wtf)….will either get 1 of 3 big names or move to a second list no s&8t! just lost all faith in SNF “reporting “. can’t wait for the 915 update…”Yow remains tight lipped about potential candidates” duh!

I started to include “go through the drop/add line in Reynolds in the early 70’s!!

That might have been the biggest challenge of all!

    HighStick,

Don’t know when you matriculated at the hallowed halls. I started in the fall of 1963 and finally graduated in the spring of 1968. I had over 160 hours because I changed majors and went to summer school and could have had a minor if I had taken one more class.

Here is the ULTIMATE test of the worthiness for the job….

In 1963, we, the freshmen MEN were sent to Carmichael Gym where we were given a “facts of life” or biology test. Those that failed got a “birds and bees” PE Class. We were also given a Physical Fitness Test. Those that failed were sent to a Fat Farm at Duke….which was the forerunner to the one that Jimmy the Greek attended.

Then, after all the testing, the line formed in the basement. You were assigned a locker and given a lock….I think that we had a wrist band with the combination on it.

THEN, you were to remove all your clothing and put them in the locker. You kept your “paperwork” and you walked up stairs. The blinds on the west side were discretely closed.

The Swimming Test (remember, that you had to be able to SWIM to graduate back then….) was to swim the 25M length, excecute a turn, and swim back. If you made it in under 60 seconds, you were assigned to ADVANCED SWIMMING….if not, beginners. I unfortunately PASSED (by 0.1 seconds) this test and the Advanced Swimming was taught by an ex Army Ranger. The final two weeks of the class were called “survival” swimming, where you had your hands and feet tied (hands behind the back and then to your feet) and they tossed you in the pool. You had to stay afloat for 5 minutes…..they had an instructor and each of us had a buddy that we were supposed to pull out if he started to sink and blow bubbles from the pool bottom.

That, my friend, was a real test….

BTW, for those that were not there….this is absolutely NO BS. My kids and my god daughter laugh about it, but me and my Ex Roommate went through this ritual….

I do NOT know when they quit making the freshmen class strip down….

I will find out WHAT they did for the women….
