WRALSportsFan.com Another day, another round of NC State speculation.

So what is going on? A byproduct of using a search firm to conduct the search. Debbie Yow is using Parker Executive Search to reach out to various interested parties. After some level of interest is established, the topic of compensation is eventually going to be brought up. While we might be playing semantics, it isn’t an offer.

….

Let’s put it another way. Say you’re an engineer at SAS. You like working there, but you heard Cisco is hiring. Your curiosity leads to inquiring about pay and benefits. You never officially applied for the job and never got an offer, but you use the potential numbers to better your situation with your current employer.

Yow isn’t dealing with out-right rejection. Instead, she is dealing with miscommunication and/or coaches who feel the need to control their own message.

FNZ today was reporting that this may be a Sidney Lowe 2. They said that leaks have come out, and that we will be shocked at how many (20 or more!) coaches have turned down the Pack. I know it is the media, but they do have some connections. They say now that Marshall is chief on the radar with Smart in the mix. Marshall may bolt for another school, however. Is there a C- list? Yow, I’m sure, is trying her darndest, but this is NC State, and irrelevant Basketball School, thanks to Lee Fowler. I hope all of this media hype is wrong, but guys, it is not looking good at the present. Yow inherited an ugly albatross.

I really cannot understand how people can’t give ANY love to Shaka Smart. Not only do we have what he’s currently gotten his team into (the Final Four) but we know that he’s extremely intelligent and learned how to coach under a guy that has put a lot of very good players into the NBA and he’s won 2 national titles. Don’t confuse this as me throwing support behind the outlandish idea of us hiring Billy Donovan, because I don’t think that is the answer nor does it really make that much sense. Smart is showing us that he knows how to coach, knows how to motivate players that are not all 4 and 5 star recruits, and he’s carrying himself like an individual that I (as well as all of you Wolfpackers) will be proud to welcome to the Wolfpack family. Sure, he hasn’t been a head coach that long, but we are literally at rock bottom. Isn’t it better to bring in a guy who has learned the game from a proven coach (and clearly he knows what he’s doing) but is still a question mark rather than throwing millions and millions of dollars at a name or even worse, having to hire another NBA coach that just doesn’t seem to grasp that this isn’t the same game that they play in the league. In DY we trust… and y’all need to stop being so negative. It just riles up all these bloggers and tweeters when they see that we react irrationally to the speculation. Go Wolfpack!

Top level coaches are like beautiful girls, you can ask them out a hundred times (not a stalker), but if they have no interest it doesn’t make you ugly.

Our ace in the hole, was supported by a pair of two’s.

“I really cannot understand how people can’t give ANY love to Shaka Smart.”

You are supposed to love a coach that wins 5 games in the NIT but not a guy that wins 5 games in the NCAA’s. A coach that is 10-0 all time national post season tournament versus a guy with… well much worse.

Don’t worry, it is really the same 4 or 5 people that keep re-discovering the same “shocker piece of information” that demonstrates that Smart is a “risky” hire that doesn’t meet Yow’s “stated minimum qualifications”. Forgetting that Smart has as many final fours as Rick Barns and more than most all other coaches in the mix.

I am sure we will know this time next week, and the drama can be over, just hope all are happy with the choice, or at least most of the fans.

Marc James is an idiot. He has single handedly ruined FNZ’s afternoon show. Yes, I believe him or Taylour Zanzabar when they claim to know 20 coaches have been offered the job and turned it down. Get real. Miss Prime Time with Packman. Now it’s Carolina basketball homer call in show.

” They said that leaks have come out, and that we will be shocked at how many (20 or more!) coaches have turned down the Pack. ”

    Lee Fowler? Is that you?

  8. Wufpacker 03/31/2011 at 11:23 PM #

” They say now that Marshall is chief on the radar with Smart in the mix. Marshall may bolt for another school, however. ”

“They” have apparently been reading SFN regularly, huh? And I got news for you….neither Marshall nor Smart would be “Sidney Lowe 2”.

  9. tvp1 04/01/2011 at 12:00 AM #

I’d be happy with Smart or Marshall. I prefer Marshall, but either would be fine. Both are huge upgrades over Lowe. Both should out-perform Sendek.

The only way this search goes badly now is if we somehow miss on both of those guys. I don’t know where we’d go from there but it would be a mess.

I think, realistically, the possibility of anyone but those two guys being the focus at this point is slim.

Already April Fools jokes about the job and we’re not even well in to the holiday…

You know what is the shame? That State fans are believing every bit of negative writing put out by people who don’t know and ignoring what our people are telling us. Debbie Yow has her associate AD make a statement to quell the reports about people turning us down and some want to believe some writer and not our AD. DY said it would probably be after the NCAA’s before we had a Coach yet everyone is worried and disappointed. Why don’t we pay attention to the people that are in charge?

  12. mak4dpak 04/01/2011 at 6:00 AM #

Okay fans, don’t lose heart in our search, no person has been offered the job and turned it down, but coaches have been given oppurtunities to inquire about the job, and then may have chosen to lose interest, but were not offered anything. So until a new coach is named, and causes us disappointment, there is still light at the end of the tunnel.

  13. Texpack 04/01/2011 at 6:44 AM #

I would be very surprised if DY doesn’t already have her “floor” selection locked up and on standby. She won’t end up in some panic looking around trying to find somebody to take the job. If she has passed on somebody as good as Buzz Williams then the floor is probably a solid coach. If we do end up hiring somebody on the less established end of the spectrum, they won’t be given five years to make it work either. That is the part of all of this people need to come to grips with.

The fact that coaches may not be interested in our job doesn’t mean that DY has botched the search. I would imagine that we’ve all turned down jobs before where we were recruited professionally and were impressed with the people we met along the way. It just wasn’t the right place for us to go at that point in our careers.

i sincerely hope that deb is considering a young up and commer like mick cronin. he is the perfect candidate. he has fire,,can recruit his tail off,,and is young and would be here for the long haul. he’s built cincinnati back to respectability in the toughest bb conf in the ncaa,,,,just a thought bc i would be elated with a cronin hire,,,,,surprised he hasnt come up on sfn before,,is there something about him that i dont know besides that he’s a cincy boy born and bred and it would take a hefty sum to lure him away??

  15. albunde6 04/01/2011 at 6:58 AM #

Mak4dpack is correct. The coaches of interest are giant killers. They have years of experience in their conferences. The only thing that I can confirm is that it will not be a coach from the ACC.

With that said, ESPN and all the talk shows can now report that Coack K and Roy each turned down 20 million per year to coach the pack.

I can also confirm that I have turned down the job. Salary was fine but they would not let me lead the football team onto the field for all the 2011 home games.

  16. albunde6 04/01/2011 at 7:11 AM #

On a side note, could someone take Roy to a barber who would show him where a grown man parts his hair. Too much coffee and 5 hour energy this morning.

Offering Pastner 2 mil & ? I don’t think I would want the guy let alone overpay for him.

Someone please delete the obvious UNX troll posts

  19. OBXbound 04/01/2011 at 8:36 AM #

Ref: Denny Crum. Now that’s funny.

  20. albunde6 04/01/2011 at 8:47 AM #

Sorry that my attempt at humor offended. But calling a 1984 graduate UNX trool would generally result in fisticuffs. I did not know that I needed to provide copy of my diploma (signed by Bruce R Poulton and William B Toole, III) or my WPC member number (158XX) to post on this site. However I will try not to offend in the future.

    I “will endevor to persevere”.

I’m not seeing actual email anywhere in here.
Here is today’s Observer article with excerpts:
    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/04/01/2187718/wolfpack-clarifies-its-coaching.html

    I quote:

In his email, Kingston said there was a difference between an official job offer from N.C. State and preliminary conversations.
“Responding to those compensation questions is not the equivalent of ‘offering the job’ to anyone,” Kingston wrote. “Instead, it is simply sharing information that reflects the commitment of State to the men’s basketball program.”

DY is at the FF which is the perfect place to meet and talk “off the record”…which I can promise whe will be doing. (unless someone from the lunatic fringe is tailing her…which they might)

I am 110% certain she will not offer the job via email, paper contract, voicemail, text or any other vehicle UNTIL she has secured an iron-clad commitment. This is one difference between her and Jed.

I like the idea of considering legal action against some of these national media heads e.g. Goodman. His comments of Yow getting the Heisman and his 4 negative bullets of which one was the NCSU has the preception they must “cheat to win” is brand and instution damage.

I saw a picture of Goodman, he looks like a loser!

  24. 93Pack 04/01/2011 at 9:53 AM #

At what point does some of these ridiculous news articles cross the line from freedom of speech to slander? I wonder if some of them could be prosecuted!

  25. PackerInRussia 04/01/2011 at 10:15 AM #

“They say now that Marshall is chief on the radar with Smart in the mix”

I’d love to know how they know things like this. Surely it’s not from the NC State side. It’s definitely not from the search firm. That means it has to come from Marshall’s camp. And although he may believe that he’s first on the list, that doesn’t mean he actually is.
