Dave Glenn says 1st offer to Rick Barnes last time was for less $$$ than he was making at Texas

Glenn on Barnes(not exact words):

-State threw the kitchen sink at Barnes the 2nd offer. Here is the difference between doing it professionally and doing it poorly. The last offer to Barnes was a huge offer. The reality is that the 1st offer from State to Barnes was less than he was making at the Longhorns. Are you kidding me? You want to alienate a candidate? Are you kidding me?….when you are a lesser job, a lesser company then you have to do the convincing. How can your 1st offer be less money than what you are currently making when State was a lateral move where he and his family were established?

The idea that your 1st offer was less compensation is embarrassing and laughable. If you act like a buffoon, then people won’t want to latch themselves onto a buffoon and the rest of the search snowballed from that point with embarrassing public nos.

Yow won’t make the same mistakes.

Sean Miller & I have had good talks. He has zero interest in any job openings. We will have no further comment. Let’s go beat Memphis!

Click here for live audio of the Dave Glenn show.

He is about to interview Mike Decourcy who wrote this article yesterday saying Sean Miller wasn’t interested in the NC State job.

With the N.C. State head coaching job at last open, Arizona coach Sean Miller will not be interested in the position.

A source close to the U of A program told Sporting News that Miller does not want the job of replacing Sidney Lowe, who resigned Tuesday. Miller is pleased with the rapid development of the program at Arizona, which resulted in a Pacific-10 Conference championship in his second season.

So far today, Dave Glenn has called Debbie Yow one of the best athletic directors in the country despite what Gary Williams and journalist/Dookie John Feinstein have had to say about her.

Nothing earth shattering here. Decourcy gave the same spiel why coaches won’t take our job. He mentioned that Sean Miller has no reason to leave although I didn’t hear him mention family ties to NC that definitely exist. He also mentioned UNC and Duke being obstacles even though Sendek’s own performance at ASU has proven that being near Duke and UNC was actually a huge advantage for him as a coach. Sendek’s recruiting has dropped off significantly since he moved thousands of miles away from Roy Williams and Coach K.

He did mention Mick Cronin as a good hire for NC State.

I saw someone put this together somewhere else that highlights just how attractive NC State is to top level recruits even with boring personalities like Herb Sendek and a failing, inexperienced coach like Sidney Lowe.

Here are Sendek’s classes:

1st class – Thornton(top 60), Wells, Gainey (Sendek got the commitment from Thornton)
2nd class – Miller(top40), Inge(top 60), Ron Kelly(top 60), C. Williams. R. Thomas, Ron Anderson(?),
3rd class – Adam Harrison(#25), K. Bean(#64), Anthony Grundy, Anthony Grundy(1st team all-ACC)
4th class – M. Williams(#33), D. Wilkins(#11), C. Crawford(#81)
5th class – S. Sherril(#38), M. Melvin(#98), Mike Bell(#95), Trey Guidry
6th class – Hodge(#7), Evtimov, Powell(#65), Collins and Watkins(#60)
7th class – Flatt, Mejia, Simons, Bennerman(#84)
8th class – Atsur(top 50), Mike O’Donell
9th class – Grant(#78), C. Simmons(#34), Brackman(#60)
10th class – Costner(#22), Fells(#35), McCauley
11th class – D. Werner(#94), L. Davis, D. Horner

Lowe’s top 100 players:
#9 JJ Hickson
#62 Tracy Smith
#60 Richard Howell
#80 D. Painter
#12 CJ Leslie
#22 Ryan Harrow
#26 Lorenzo Brown

^Howler: UNC doesn’t spit out journalism ‘products’, they bud out like yeasts. Occasionally, when they have too many, they have to vomit a few out early in order to make room for the new brood.

“Is it coaching or is it recruiting”

It depends on your level of recruiting. If you can’t coach, you’d better be able to recruit multiple All Americans. Otherwise, you’d better be able to coach.

In our case, the school recruits well in the ACC. We may or may not be able to get multiple All Americans every year. However, we can get top tier talent. I believe we’d be better off with a better coach than a better recruiter.

“Is it coaching or is it recruiting”

I’m afraid we need both to compete in our league. Look no further than UNC. Remember how they looked last year (pitiful) as opposed to this year (regular season champs). Now, did Roy just learn how to coach this year? I think not. The fact is he could always coach, but this year the recruiting talent improved (i.e. Harrison Barnes). So, coaching alone (UNC last year) will not cut it. Talent alone (NCSU – this year’s freshman class) will not do it. You need both.

Back to the crux of the thread title, it boggles my mind that anyone who was trying to lure someone away from a job in any line of work would offer less money than the candidate was currently making. I remember reading about a low ball offer to Barnes, I never would have thought that Uncle Jed offered a pay cut. I think there might be something to Fowler sabotaging the search to make his boy Herbus look better.
All I know to say this time is God bless Milton and Lib Yow for Kay and Deb.

Rick’s salary at a public school should be a matter of record. Which means:

    1) Fowler did not take the time to research what he was making and beat it with offer #1, or
    2) Fowler was actually stupid enough to think Rick would take less money to change jobs.

I knew Fowler was dumber than a box of hair, but DAMN….

i believe that fowler did not truly want barnes as our coach. he had heard from fans in emails and at games that rick should be the guy long before the job was open. fowler wanted the hire to be HIS. if rick had come, it would’ve not been his brain child since there had been discussions before among fans and some media that barnes and ncsu would make a great fit. i dont believe he sabotaged it, but i am saying he wasnt into the barnes idea like the rest of us were…and maybe are.

it’s all about coaching. i’ve seen over coach k’s tenure.. recruiting players he wants and has started to pick up bigger named recruits. before, he took role players and molded them into his definition of a champion.

i’m not sold on roy being the greatest of coaches.. if he was such a good coach then where were the championships in kansas… bill self seems to be more successful than roy there.. to me, roy williams cherry picked the unc job!

i’m sorry for who thinks this years unc team is well coached to a national power level. regular season champs? they got a beatdown in gburro. the acc is not good this year and i see unx taking a seat early in the tourney. this unx team plays good defense, but aside from that.. they really aren’t dangerous to this years’ top teams. they have a cake walk for a bracket early on.. but i still see them with an early exit.

to me it is a mixture of the two but it all starts with coaching. good coaching leads to playing at a high level that leads to wins which leads to attention from recruits…etc

the incoming coach will have the oppurtunity to hit the ground running much like brownell is doing at tigertown with stitt.. lorenzo and wood are very competitive.. votes of confidence from cjw & co. all this coach has to do for recruits the following season is win. sidney has some solid guys lined up for 2012 that are already interested and committed. the recruiting should not be a problem imo.

K didn’t develop ordinary players into champions. He never even made the tournament until he had several Mickey D’s on the roster. He missed the NCAAs with freaking national-player-of-the-year Johnny Dawkins as a sophmore on the team. He needed more. K recruited his way to the top of the ACC. Only when he had assembled vastly superior talent did Duke start winning.

I think being a championship basketball program is recruiting and coaching, but coaching is largely the ability to motivate. There is no example of a coaching great that “won with less.” None. Even 1983 = three high school all americans, two of them senior guards, supported by multiple future NBA players underneath. Coming out of high school, Lowe and Whit were the top two guards in the nation. It was not a bold prediction to say those two would win a title together before they were through.

If you want to compete with Duke and UNC, exceed the Sendek plateau, and reach the heights where NC State once sat, you have to recruit multiple blue chippers to NC State year after year–not just “solid” recruits, but the very top guys, like those coaches listed above.

some players aren’t mcdaa’s until they are recruited by duke unc texas msu florida…

coach k blends a few of them in but doesn’t stock the shelf like unc does. he builds the team not the other way around.

i don’t mean to call coach k’s players ordinary just that they are more ordinary than vince carter or mj.. coach k could have taken any team we’ve had in the last twenty years and made them much more competitive than we were imo. it’s coaching not recruiting big named players. look at cal and his ability to locate unknown talent..

  16. Tuffy2 03/17/2011 at 3:30 PM #

Lee Fowler wasn’t as dumb as everyone is making him out to be. I think he had an agenda and succeeded he did.

Is this guy working somewhere now? How and where boggles the mind.

  17. Wulfpack 03/17/2011 at 8:42 PM #

I went to Duke’s practice today in Charlotte (as well as Tennessee’s and Michigan’s) and I can tell you Duke’s players are not “ordinary”.

Kyrie Irving, who practiced today and will play, is a top 5 draft pick.

Singler is a freak of nature with amazing skill.

The Plumlees are freaking giant, yet athletic as hell. Miles was throwing down some amazing dunks and he’s fast as hell, not to mention built like a tree.

Curry never missed, and Dawkins, who also rarely misses, was throwing it down and blocking shots as well.

Nolan Smith can get to the rim whenever he wants.

I can tell you, these are not “ordinary” players.

  18. Wolfy__79 03/17/2011 at 11:33 PM #

the important ingredient here is the coach.. not the player/s. nolan smith is very representative of coach k.. he has his toughness.

curry is a great shooter, alot of teams had a chance to grab him but they didn’t. kyrie chose duke and he’s a rare occurrence.

by the way, they may do these things in practice.. but it’s not very evident in games. they are definetly the best team in the conference this year.. but they get beat up in the paint on the reg!

rtpack24: Aand just who has DY hired for a coach? If I were Miller I wouldn’t come to State and leave a pie job.
