Continue Relaxing, People

There will be plenty of time after the hire is made to score the search, and to try to piece together what actually happened. For the next 36-48 hours (at least – I use that timeframe because it’s the next “benchmark” – i.e., when everyone will travel to Texas for the Final Four weekend then), just relax and remember a few things:

1) We are not being publically rejected by anyone. No, I don’t care about what some jackass tweeted about Josh Pastner, etc.
2) Nobody really knows anything (which means that all we are discussing is our semi-educated guesses as to whether or not the continued radio silence is a good or bad thing).
3) Debbie Yow explicitly told us that this would be a very quiet – and probably lengthy – process.

If we (or you) try to parse, substantiate, and/or refute every snide sports radio remark and “tweet” out there…we/you will go completely batshit crazy. Don’t overreact to any “news” – positive or negative, no matter whether it supports your own personal theory/guess as to what’s happening behind closed doors. If things do drag on into the weekend and even next week – more interaction between sportswriters, agents, coaches, and hangers-on will just increase the noise level. Take it in stride.

Also, please remember that everyone in the Wolfpack community has frayed nerves and is thus pretty short-tempered. Take a time-out before you light into somebody. Use some discretion and self-awareness. Don’t poke a finger in anyone else’s eye, and don’t do anything to turn SFN into a piss-filled toddlers’ sandbox like so many other forums out there.

Now, I bid you good night. Time for some ice cream and mindless TV. Away from the f-ing computer.

Stick, not really, but thirty years? People have no clue who NCSU is outside of the ACC. I never seen a group of people cling to the past as much as State fans.

Some random obvservations on the coaching search thus far …

    (i) it is a lot more fun to watch some one else go through a coaching search than be the fanbase of the team doing so

(ii) this has been a particularly entertaining search … lots of intrigue, daily rollercoasters with new names, lots of twitter bombs (heh), just enough stuff to keep an observer checking in 2-3 times a day

(iii) media coverage of this search seems greatly influenced by the last search, so no matter Yow’s efforts to keep a lid on it, hunting down rejections of State seems to be something of a blood sport

(iv) it will be odd if Yow hires Smart, given her declarations at the coaching search press conference; I would consider Grant a better candidate but it is such a crap shoot, who knows

    (v) the working assumption that all UNC fans (not to mention the BOG) want State to fail in this search is incorrect; many do, but many of us think a good hire here is critical to the health of the ACC (especially since GaT had to go cheap and get a guy who doesn’t exactly bring instant credibility to that languishing program)

Pastner inked a deal with Memphis days ago quickly ending any rumors he was looking elsewhere as he was linked to other jobs. Pastner never got into detailed talks with any other school.

Speaking of history, were we left out of the UNLV story. Maybe this can be a topic at a later date.

  5. BeVeryAfraid 03/31/2011 at 11:25 AM #

Does anyone believe they could list three candidates from which our coach will definitely come? I don’t think DY does either.

  6. ILpackfan 03/31/2011 at 11:33 AM #

The more we post, the less we collectively know. Take BJD95’s advice and relax, folks. We’re going to get a qualified professional to take the job no matter what. Somebody wake me when the press conference starts.

  7. phillypacker 03/31/2011 at 11:50 AM #

I’m not sure what can be done when the same troll-like posters come onto the forums again and again and act like everyone out there is 23 years old and/or is very grateful for their UNX education. It gets weary reading oversimplified, asinine posts, with no factual backing or no sense of what people older/more common sensical than them think. DY will get the best coach we/she can get PERIOD That is all you can expect an AD to do.

NC State is not a bad job. Some coaches probably are scared by the challenges we face in terms of playing Duke/UNX. To hell with them.

Just keeping up with the current articles on how state athletics are viewed would educate you. For instance, how many programs in the country can say that, during the last 12 years we have been #13 in terms of signing top 100 recruits, #17 in top 50 recruits, #13 in top 10 recruits? I mean really, is there a better measure? This was during one of the worst 20 year slumps in NC State history, 1998-now. Oh and look at last year’s recruiting hall and this year’s? Is your head outside your ass?

Oh and by the way, probably just also ran schools below us?
    Let’s check top 100::

Texas, Villanova, Louisville, Ohio State, Georgetown, and many more.

I’ll stop now. Do not listen to the national pundits. They are idiots.

  8. hball57 03/31/2011 at 11:53 AM #

I think the speculation is so entertaining.

Some people have looked for a “home run hire”. But is that what we really need? And is that what we want Debbie Yow to focus on?

I think we need a Very Good Coach. I don’t care if that Coach is famous or unknown. So we need to trust our AD is going to find a Very Good Coach. And when we start winning, the Wolfpack Nation will unite behind that coach. And that is what we should be waiting for.

Random ? — Can someone tell me why I’m not able to sign into the forums but am signed in here???

    Thanks!

Don’t sweat it. It’s not personal and it happens to me all of the time on our forums in both IE8 and Firefox. But usually when one won’t let me sign on, the other one will. The other option is to wait an hour or so and then try again.

  11. philliepacker 03/31/2011 at 12:25 PM #

We know it is a great job but the problem is we are not perceived this way any longer.

  12. Statefan1998 03/31/2011 at 12:27 PM #

Im sorry, but why the hell do you trust Debbie Yow so much? You all act like she could not possibly get this wrong. I think it is because she is not Lee Fowler.

  13. tractor57 03/31/2011 at 12:39 PM #

    Statefan 1998,

Basically because she has shown the be professional and proactive both here and at MD. Of course that isn’t a guarantee but until proven otherwise I’ll trust her. Hard nosed for sure but in my view that was exactly what we needed.

  14. newt 03/31/2011 at 12:41 PM #

I trust NC State. Some of y’all need to remember that a coach that can win 1 game in the Pac 10 can regularly go to the NCAAs at NC State.

  15. Prowling Woofie 03/31/2011 at 12:57 PM #

We don’t need a ‘big name’ coach – we need the right coach.

Debbie Yow will find us the right coach. One that will be professional, ethical, and will build a successful program.

Building a program involves more than throwing a team on the floor that gets us to the NCAA tournament one year. It will take time, and require steps of progress.

We’ve been bad for a long time, guys; returning to glory won’t happen in a season.

  16. IamGumbyDammit 03/31/2011 at 12:58 PM #

I’ve tried to bite my tongue but enough is enough – some of you that insist on posting unsupported and unnecessary negativity need to seriously STFU or just go ahead and come out of the closet as the UNX fans you really are.

  17. anonimus 03/31/2011 at 12:58 PM #

It’s a good job. Key word… job. Yes, it’s lots of money, very public, on TV, possibly talked about if your regionally or nationally relevant, but it’s a job just the same. Just like any job, it’s the rare person that just hops and skips around the country, uprooting family and starting anew in a new location for a little more money than they currently make at their current gig. I’ve turned down opportunities to make more money b/c the increase wasn’t enough to upset the status quo. Double what I make and I’ll think long and hard about it. Thus big names aren’t likely to jump over here where it’s possibly a tougher gig than where they are. Going from 3 to 4 million isn’t a lifestyle change. Going from 700K to 2.8 mil is. That’s why the mid majors typically get gigs like NC State.

Another note. Stop believing people you don’t know or even those you do who start any sentence with, “I have a reliable source…” or the like. Would you trust iPack87Ghood with investment advice? What about douche bag DeCourcy or other talking head? Invest as much emotion or thought into what these folks share as you would your own money on a bet that they are right. If Dave Glenn is worth $50 bucks of nervous energy and wringing of hands, then have at it. I just hate to see my fellow Wolfpackers so worked up and distraught over the LACK of factually verified information. This fan base deserves a good coach and good results for the energy and money invested and with competent leadership we will.

“Click to Edit” doesn’t work for me. I used your instead of you’re above and would like to correct so grammar police doesn’t fine me.

    Long time reader, new poster

You guys with the defeatest attitudes surprise me. You act as if the Wolfpack are born losers and always will be losers. Why trust DY. Because she has given all appearences of being a professional that knows what she is doing. Now there is no gaurantee. You might think the coaching search is a crap shoot but it is more of a deerhunt. She is out looking to bag a big one, maybe 11 points but may have to settle for an 8 pointer. So she stays in the field longer. If it gets late and she comes in with a 5 pointer, remember, we won’t kill this deer but will give it a chance to mature into a bigger beast. If not, we make another change. Two words, Valvano and Coach K. both were 5 pointers. For somee of you 20 years may be more than a 3rd of your life and since your childhood we have not had a good coach. But it’s only been 3 coaches. Because two of them were alumni we did not get rid of them soon enough and the other just never panned out. Valvano got us there quickly but it took Coach K a long time to get Duke going but he reached the pinacle. Therefore you can understand giving a coach some time to establish himself. This will work out. We have the tallent, we just need someone who can coach. None of the previous 3 were very tallented at coaching. That should be our first criteria. Maybe I am too much an optimist because I was there in 83, but it’s better than being a defeatest. Go Pack.

Talent – Excuse my spelling – I r an engineer.

  21. TomCat 03/31/2011 at 1:29 PM #

Re…….lax. I’m not overly surprised at all the search has carried to this weekend. Unless there is an immediate hire the best solution is to wait till Final Four weekend when you can get in front of a multitude of candidates in one place. NCAA Final Four location traditionally is where deals are done. In case you didn’t know: All coaches in the business converge to the NCAA title host city and meet in the coaches annual convention. It is the perfect cover, to speak with any and every coach… and coach’s go-between in the country. They are ALL there. Do not fret. You may or may not like who eventually gets hired but you can rest assured — that decision will be negotiated face to face this weekend and a head coach will be announced not long after the ball stops bouncing in Houston.

  22. ADVENTUROO 03/31/2011 at 1:32 PM #

    Pack85EE,

You hit an NBA Three Pointer…

As one who has watched NCSU play with 7 (SEVEN) different coaches…and I was in College when Case was coaching as I entered the haloed halls in the fall of 1963, I feel that I can echo what you said.

We were a little “tarnished” after the Dixie Classic scandal and Case never fully recovered. However, Sloan renewed that and Jimmy V built on it.

We have a GREAT facility. We do have a storied past. We were only the 8th team to have TWO NCAA Banners in 1983.

We have a GREAT area to live in, good schools for young coach’s children and all the “arts and stuff” that you could want.

The campus is great….we killed all the ivey and put in bricks, but still great. I take my GK’s over there and wander around and show them where I went to class and where I lived. My GK’s, each, have attended about 25 games since I have 4 LTR’s and we have taken them to a lot of mens and womens games at Reynolds.

I now trust Debbie Yow. As a hunter, I like your analogy….you do NOT kill the young bucks, but watch them grow and eventually they will be one of your trophy’s. Non Hunters may not fully understand that, but my hunt club put in a 4 point, then a 6 point and finally an 8 point limit. We take a LOT of does, but when you get a buck, it is “mountable”

    Well said….chill out folks….

PS…I r an Enginear, 2….I can spell and write….but as an EX-EE, who finally graduated in EO, I never got past the complex frequency plane of the Nepar (Neper?) Frequency when I found out that I would only use it in Graduate School and that our Lab Instructor had written his doctorial thesis on it….

That and the Ulcer that I had from stressing over that little electron and how it behaved as it went through resistors, capacitors, inductors and god knows, what else, sent me to Holliday Hall to change my major….

I have heard some very interesting things all across the web spectulating about Mick Cronin from Cinn being in contract talks? Anyone heard anything about this?

    Another reason to relax:

While this coaching search is the center of *our* universe, it is not even a blip on ESPN’s NCAA headlines. That means our search news is less important than Monmouth’s hiring of King Rice.

Opening day, the NCAA tournament, Shaka Smart, The Masters, and the fallout from the Missouri coaching debacle have relegated this coaching search to twitter (one journalistic step above and AOL chatroom), blogs, and local sports talk radio.

Compare this to 2006 when every rejection was in the headlines on ESPN.com. The media had nothing to talk about then since it was so far removed from the NCAA tournament.

Also, a coach saying no to a search firm’s cold call is not the same as flying on HOG-1 to the RBC in the middle of the night only to FedEX the briefcase full of money back to Raleigh the next day.

  25. Greywolf 03/31/2011 at 2:25 PM #

First: If UNX can claim a “regular season” championship without winning the ACC tournament, why don’t we claim a “regular season” National Championship in 1973? We were undefeated, you know, but we didn’t win the tournament.

Second: It may have been mentioned but one factor in selecting a coach is compatiblity with big hitters in the WPC — the ones who want to be palsy with the coach. One prominently mentioned coach does not fit that bill.

Pack85EE, when I went to State College, I couldn’t even spell injunear now I are one. And Delta r ready when you is.
