Continue Relaxing, People

There will be plenty of time after the hire is made to score the search, and to try to piece together what actually happened. For the next 36-48 hours (at least – I use that timeframe because it’s the next “benchmark” – i.e., when everyone will travel to Texas for the Final Four weekend then), just relax and remember a few things:

1) We are not being publically rejected by anyone. No, I don’t care about what some jackass tweeted about Josh Pastner, etc.
2) Nobody really knows anything (which means that all we are discussing is our semi-educated guesses as to whether or not the continued radio silence is a good or bad thing).
3) Debbie Yow explicitly told us that this would be a very quiet – and probably lengthy – process.

If we (or you) try to parse, substantiate, and/or refute every snide sports radio remark and “tweet” out there…we/you will go completely batshit crazy. Don’t overreact to any “news” – positive or negative, no matter whether it supports your own personal theory/guess as to what’s happening behind closed doors. If things do drag on into the weekend and even next week – more interaction between sportswriters, agents, coaches, and hangers-on will just increase the noise level. Take it in stride.

Also, please remember that everyone in the Wolfpack community has frayed nerves and is thus pretty short-tempered. Take a time-out before you light into somebody. Use some discretion and self-awareness. Don’t poke a finger in anyone else’s eye, and don’t do anything to turn SFN into a piss-filled toddlers’ sandbox like so many other forums out there.

Now, I bid you good night. Time for some ice cream and mindless TV. Away from the f-ing computer.

yeah i think all the names that have been thrown out are certainly good candidates i was personally wanting to hear more about pursuing Chris Mack but i guess nobody will know anything until an official Press Conference. We all could use a lil break from this search i guess i just dont have the stomach to take all the ups and downs. so until i see the conference ill be watching Yankees Baseball (: !!!!!

I appreciate this post. It really is one of those situations where it’s “easy to say, but hard to do”. To all of the newcomers on here, the site isn’t normally THIS wacky (in reference to the now infamous Epic Thread). Sure people do get emotional on here from time to time because just about all of us are very passionate about Wolfpack athletics, but since there is so much uncertainty and anxiety from this coaching search it becomes very easy for things to snowball.

Full disclosure: I am a new member but I have been “lurking” on this site since the bungled SL search. I love how this site has grown to EPIC proportions over the course of five years (pardon my reference to the ET), and a lot of it has to do with the passion, insight, and great perspective of fans who contribute here. The admins take great pride in this, and I think that’s a key reason for the original post. BJD, myself and many others come here because there are great quality articles about the Wolfpack to be read, and there generally isn’t a lot of wasted space where people troll or point fingers with ad hominem attacks. The discussion is usually enlightening and civil (enough).

We’re all in the same boat here folks. I for one refuse to pull myself in one direction or other in regards to emotion until an OFFICIAL announcement is made. Have fun with the ET, but take BJD’s advice. I definitely feel better for doing so.

Hi folks, been out and while I was out I came across some very interesting information. Dont know how much I am at liberty to share, but I feel like I owe some information.

Has anyone heard the phrase “truth is stranger than fiction”? It applies here. What I heard ronight is enough to make me throw up first, and give up hope second.

THE ONE THING I WANT TO SAY IS DEBBIE YOW HAS BEEN TRUE TO HER WORD AND SHE HAS DONE HER JOB!
I spoke to some very well connected people, and Debbie made the offers to the right people. WE HAVE NOT BEEN PUBLICLY TURNED DOWN. Offers were accepted and then for reasons out of our control, offers were declined.

My source tonight confirmed everything I had stated previously to people, either on here or in PM’s. This was very assuring, until I heard the hammer drop.

You folks see the light at the end of the tunnel? I did too. The problem is that light is a train coming at us, and there is about to be a big train wreck.

We had 3 big names who wanted to come coach at NC State, but we cannot offer any of the three the package they would want/need. The donors are willing to pay it privately, but this cannot happen for legal reasons. We could have had any of the three big names but as it is now, based on what I heard tonight, that we cannot and will not hire any of them for reasons beyond our control. Debbie did her job and had our coach – take your pick – all three wanted it.

So for any of you following what I have previosuly stated, you know I am not in the Smart camp. I better learn to live with it, because that is about the best we are going to be able to do.

  5. 93Pack 03/31/2011 at 12:28 AM #

    Mike,
“The donors are willing to pay it privately, but this cannot happen for legal reasons.”

Please explain! Can’t the donors donate whatever they want to the school and then the school use it to pay the coach?

  6. Wufpacker 03/31/2011 at 12:32 AM #

” The donors are willing to pay it privately, but this cannot happen for legal reasons. ”

Frankly, I had wondered about this previously. I opted to not say anything because those that were talking of the five big donors agreeing to pony up $1mil each seemed to be very definitive in what they were saying and very enthusiastic about it. I made the mistake of bringing up the whole State job/employment issue regarding the time a job must be open and posted publicly. When someone told me I was an idiot because no one would post their resume publicly if that was a requirement (which is of course not the issue….and it ain’t what I said, neither), I decided that perhaps the crowd gathering for this coaching search wouldn’t be the best audience for such subtle talking points.

I have a feeling that once the dust settles and we begin to get snippets of what has actually been occurring, it will be enough to make us laugh….or cry.

Does $600 a year for Lobo Club, 4 Lifetime Seats for football, 4 Lifetime seats for basketball and continuous Wolfpack Club membership since I graduated, 1984, mean that I have a say in who will be hired and whether I have any input into how they should perform and represent as a citizen of our community outside of game day? It doesn’t mean a thing. Would I have been able to be a successful self-employed businessman for the last 23 years without my education and having others determine what is successful and choose and direct the path of my business decisions on a daily basis. I compare myself to many of the other persons that have been hired into the positions that they were to hold within the University Athletics departments over the years. I doubt that any one of them went to bed at night and woke up the next day and said “Let me see how much worse I can make things today. Let me plan how to lose the game on Saturday. Let me figure out which key player I want to be injured this week or lose for the season. Let me bust my butt to get to this fund raiser and be completely ‘uncharming’.” There are far too many external variables that disrupt the course of a coaches day and dissatisfaction and whining because things aren’t as good as the ‘other guys’. Well the ‘other guys’ seem to leave their coaches alone to allow them to use their vision and plot the course and do what they do best. The ones that seem to have less than above average results, well they may be the same as any of a number of our most vocal wolfpack club members that are suffering through their lives and workdays hoping to be able to associate their personal worth with their favorite teams success. Hey, ‘the other guy’s fans do it’. Maybe one day our fans will allow a coach to develop and grow before the whining begins. I have learned an approach that I apply to my employees. The ones that are gonna make it are gonna excel if left alone. It really, really works…look up “micro-managing” and refer to its negative connotations. Get this hire, let him alone. Cyclically speaking the times are inevitably going to change…

I am a State Alum and have been a 2 year reader of SFN but have never felt the need to get a username to respond to comments until now.

First of all, no matter who we end up with as a coach lets be glad DY is trying hard and knows what we are doing. I don’t know about the rest of you but I keep searching different twitters and facebooks looking for information only to find conflicting messages. While this is depressing and frustrating for me, it is actually a good thing for our University. If you think about it how much information has been spread on the main media such as ESPN networks or established journalist? Unlike Missouri which just got denied a coach on national television where even minimal sports fans were witness’, we have been conducting business siliently where if we were rejected it only ends up on message boards and random tweets that are not trustworthy.

Secondly, coaches rarely leave major conferences for jobs, even if there is more money involved. Look at Miami and Florida football head coaches as of late. With so much tradition at both schools, neither ended up with a grandslam hire recently. Things just do not normally function this way.

Lastly, I want to advise everyone to continue to be patient but do not get your hopes up on a coach K or billy D name. While it would be fantastic if by some miracle something crazy happened and we got a big name, do not expect this only to be let down by the annoucement of our new coach. Lets all try to continue to prepare for the best but expect the worst so no matter who we get we are excited to give our support!

I have been in the WPC for years and I know how some of these things work. I am not buying what Mike says. There is a limit on what the school can pay but there is other sources. These outside of the school such as annuities from the WPC, clothing deals and BB camps. These outsources are much more income than the official school paycheck. I can’t see money being an issue for one of the big three or four or how many other big names there could be. What I can see is that Yow has approached Barnes and Miller and outlined what a contract would look like and they have either said no or there are still some discussions goong on. I think this will play out over the next couple of days and we may not know till next week. Smart may very well be a B candidate and if so I will be fine with that. Highier risk but he could turn into something special with time.

I believe nothing until it’s official. If we get any of the Big 3, I won’t be shocked… confused about why one would come, but no longer shocked. Similarly, if we hire Marshall or someone similar, I also won’t be shocked.

Anything… and I mean anything… seems possible at this point. The wait is simply agonizing.

  11. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 7:15 AM #

Not sure that I understand what Mike was trying to infer. We would be under the same restrictions as UNX. Why would we not be able to offer the dollars that they pay Roy or Butch?

This does not make sense. Could someone explain this reference or send me to site that would clarify.

  12. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 7:16 AM #

Mike, sorry bro, but your sources aren’t worth much.

First you told us that the offer was ‘staggering’ and that Billy Donovan was going to be our next coach. At that time, I said that we weren’t spending close to $4 million for a coach and would be pushing it to get to $3-$3.5. But you insisted your source was correct and we were blowing everyone away with our offers.

Secondly, you are now telling us that all of the Big 3 wanted to come here but we just did not have the money to pay them? Uh, sorry, not buying that one again. These things just do not pass the smell test.

I’m sure Yow is doing her job. We are not receiving state funds, so technically we are free to offer any contract we please to a coaching candidate. The problem was when some of you thought we had $4 and $5 million dollars to throw around for a basketball coach. That was never the case.

  13. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 7:18 AM #

^This also serves as a convenient excuse for all of those who predicted Donovan as our coach, with that 10 year/$42 million deal, or whatever the heck it was.

Don’t believe everything you hear, gang.

  14. sautz 03/31/2011 at 7:23 AM #

Thanks for trying to reign that rumor in, Hamlet. It’s starting to spread, which is stupid.

  15. Wolfpack_1995 03/31/2011 at 7:25 AM #

    THINK MARSHALL!

  16. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 7:27 AM #

I ask the question over the last two weeks. What do we have to spend? $2M? $4M? Salary is a logical place to start when we discuss who would come here. Someone from this site even listed the estimated current salaries of several of the named coaches.

As I said then, no reason to chase a coach who is making $4Million a year when we only have $3M to spend.

So again I ask if anyone knows, What is our ceiling for this position?

  17. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 7:28 AM #

^I won’t doubt that there are obstacles in contracts and getting money approved, but this has always been the case and always will be. If you notice, Roy Williams and Mike K. are well UNDER-paid, but somehow UNC and Duke manage to get and keep their coaches.

  18. MattN 03/31/2011 at 7:46 AM #

Roy is in the ~$1.8M range. If we offer only that amount, we’ll get a Marshall/Smart-level of coach.

Coaches go to places like UNC because they select their players. They don’t recruit. Money is simply a secondary concern. They know they are going to win and be secure for as long as they want the job. We, on the otherhand, have to overpay to get the same level of coaching ability.

  19. dsgill87 03/31/2011 at 7:54 AM #

I think the job is Shaka Smarts to take.

  20. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 7:58 AM #

The bottom line is we have known all along what we had to offer. Yow knew this in the press conference (and before) when she said we would make ‘competitive’ offers but wouldn’t pay double the market value.

We can pay enough for a good coach. Will it be $3.5-$4 million/year? No, but it never was going to be that high.

Really, I view this as old news. Just because some of us believed certain rumors or thought we were going to offer $40 million contracts does not make it fact. Yow has known all along what she had to play with (or should have if she inconceivably did not know).

  21. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 8:03 AM #

I pose this question, If we did not have 4-5 million to spend, then should we have aready made a hire?

  22. Statefan1998 03/31/2011 at 8:03 AM #

Anyone who does not think we are screwed is living in la la land. We are being turned down left and right. Queen Debbie (some make her out to be the savior), may be doing her best, but we are going to be going through this process again in another 3 or 4 years.

This notion that who ever she brings in will be a good coach is BS. She is loved so much because she is not Lee Fowler, not because she is a wonderful AD. This pie in the sky attitude really needs to be adjusted. People need to pull their heads out of the sand and realize that she is on her 7 or 8 option.

  23. state99 03/31/2011 at 8:06 AM #

Great read – Thanks! Another way of putting what you’re saying……

  24. wolfie91 03/31/2011 at 8:07 AM #

I am not an insider, just an alum and a fan, and I don’t buy that we had three big name coaches lined up but just couldn’t get the money. Big name coaches just don’t move around that much, even for elite jobs. (Remember Donovan turned down UK and Williams initially turned down UNC.) So we are supposed to believe that 3 of them were prepared to take our job? I can hardly see the elite schools having 3 big names lined up for their jobs, much less us.

  25. jbpackfan 03/31/2011 at 8:11 AM #

    dsgill87 Says:
March 31st, 2011 at 7:54 am I think the job is Shaka Smarts to take.

I agree with this. Debbie is waiting on Shaka.
