Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart continues to be the central figure in N.C. State’s search for a new basketball coach, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.
Smart, who will turn 34 on April 8, is 55-20 in two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will play Butler on Saturday at Houston in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament…

According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.

There is only one undeniable fact you can hold on to after reading Dave Glenn’s article: Dave Glenn is a douche bag’s douche bag.

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was….

“I’m sure Shaka’s AD threw out $4M to set a bar nobody could/would want to reach.”

I’m almost positive he said $8M as a joke when I was listening…but I’m sure Glenn would tell me I’m wrong.

If Painter stays at Purdue that is good for us, because I’m sure that, along with Stevens at Butler, Smart would be on their radar as he’s from Ohio, right next door, and that may be a more attractive opportunity for him.

By the way, Smart is now one of only 28 active NCAA Division I head basketball coaches to appear in the Final Four – out of 345.

As many of you have said, Shaka Smart is the only coach that MIGHT be interested that reminds me of Jimmy V. Smart has FAR less HC experience, but he seems to be a Game Coach. He was also a pretty good point guard and has tutored for 9 years as an assistant, so you can probably expect that he is also a good X&O guy. Recruiting MAY be a concern…but I don’t know that. I do know that Jimmy V. said that he had to learn HOW to recruit and it took him a while. That, coming from a man could could sell ice cubes to residents of the Artic and Anartica, means that you gotta LEARN how to sell yourself and the school.

So, if Smart is as SMART as he seems to be….and DY is trying to seduce him, then I for one wish for a happy relationship.

Obviously we will make it worth his time….and if he wins the next two, it will be a bit more costly. VCU will probably not, despite all the local hoopla that I’m hearing from the folks that I know at VCU and in Richmond, come up with the bread….unless the school wins the Powerball Lottery Drawing this week.

The beat goes on….the news is not there….and N89MF’s Flight Aware info has been blacked out….OH the AGONY of it all….

it certainly is absurd that other fans read this blog and then re-blog what they read…. leading to the 9 million Carolina grads who all work for ESPN to start all this chatter and nonsense specifically to embarrass us or whatever it is that they’re trying to do. Those “fans” of our who keep saying negative this that and the other just need to let it alone. This is a great job, period. We’ve got the legacies of David Thompson and Jimmy V, have very loyal fans (who just want to compete with those clowns up the road), and Raleigh is plain and simple a fantastic place to live. The right coach will find us and things will work out they way they should. Let’s just try to not let all the Tweets/Facebooks/blogs/etc. get to us. The Wolfpack nation has some good basketball ahead of us.

Interesting that so many feel a “ringer” in their eyes is the only way to go. Also interesting prior to the coach K being hired at Duke, what was he? Anyone care to take a guess? Also interesting what he has fashioned! How about Roy Williams? Where has he been? If I’m not mistaken Debbie Yow gave Gary Williams contract exstensions… wait a minute now… didn’t he win a national championship?
Now let’s check out some guy named Shaka Smart. I’m not saying this is the right guy, but if memory serves me right, Valvano was at Iona prior to leading our ship against insurmountable odds and against “Phi Slamma Jamma”!!! no less. Again, let’s look at Shaka according to Wikipedia. Of course this info can be corroborated but let’s look at what they say….In high school, Smart was a three-year starter for Oregon High School in Wisconsin. He was a second-team All-Badger Conference pick as a senior and by the end of his career was the all-time assists leader at Oregon for a career (458), season (201) and single game (20).[5]
After graduating high school, Smart turned down both Harvard and Yale to attend Kenyon College, a liberal arts school in Ohio. On the ESPN program Pardon the Interruption Smart credited his personal relationship with then Head Coach Bill Brown as the reason for his decision. As a member of the Kenyon College basketball team, he was an all-conference selection as a senior and is the school’s career assists leader (542).[6] Smart was named a member of the 1999 USA TODAY All-USA Academic Team.
    Assistant coach:
Smart began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant at California University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned a Master’s Degree. Afterwards, he was hired as Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Dayton. He was then an assistant at the Highland Park High School for three years, Clemson for two, and Florida for one.
    Style of play:
Smart’s teams play a style of basketball known as “havoc.” Smart described his “havoc” defensive philosophy during his introductory press conference as, “We are going to wreak havoc on our opponent’s psyche and their plan of attack.” On the court, the “havoc” defensive mindset is visible through the heavy use of the full court press and pressing after made baskets to disrupt opponents’ timing of offensive sets. In his second season, VCU led the Colonial Athletic Association in steals. Offensively, Smart-coached teams play uptempo and push the ball after misses and makes with what Smart describes as “The freedom to make plays in the open court.”
Now isn’t what makes Duke so effective the pressure defense and the easy baskets they get? Hmmm.. why not turn K’s tricks back on himself? Also, what kind of recruiting could a final four coach have success with? Just thinking…..

Everyone on the Smart bandwagon has been talked into him being an acceptable hire. Hiring an average, unexperienced coach from CAA should not be acceptable and the chances of it working out for NCSU are <5%. Let's hope we get Grant.

I would take Grant in a heartbeat. Smart was not even in anyones thooughts a month ago.
Someone here mentioned what was DY doing all year, she had to know Sid was a gonner. I can wait for a new coach that is not what is freaking me out. What disturbs me is DY is acting like this was a sudden departure !

After Matt Painter signed to stay with Purdue, U of Missouri is targeting Shaka Smart next.
