Coaching Search Update from Dave Glenn

Full link.

Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart continues to be the central figure in N.C. State’s search for a new basketball coach, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.
Smart, who will turn 34 on April 8, is 55-20 in two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will play Butler on Saturday at Houston in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament…

According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.

I have to post now since I’ve not posted since the search began. Everyone needs to calm down and relax for another week or so until this thing ends. DG is only as knowledgeable as the situation allows and as his “sources” allow. This thing has been very well handled and very quiet, so I’m assuming his info is 90 percent BS, that just makes the most sense logically.

It was improbable that we’d get Miller or Barnes or any of the other A list people, so it is what it is at this point. I suspect We are trying to find a young guy with huge potential and desire. Smart is ridiculously young and unproven, but everything i hear about him makes me think he will be a guy that has success long term and will pile up wins at a major school in a major conference.

Assuming A-list candidate possibilities have been exhausted, I would rather take a shot at a young guy with a tremendous ceiling like Smart than some of the other guys who have a more proven, but perhaps lower ceiling.

I disagree that Smart needs us more than we need him, but he very well could be exactly what we need. He has to realize that he could win 25 games at VCU every year for the next decade and still never make another NCAAT. He barely made it this year in an incredibly weak field, and likely wouldn’t have even been on the bubble if the ACC had gotten its usual 6-7 teams or the SEC hadn’t been so dreadful.

If it is Smart, then my take on it is that we throw $2.5M at him, show him we’re serious and incent him to build this program, but include a hefty buyout clause to make it difficult on him to use us as a strategic stepping stone to something higher profile.

My daughter and I are very pleased that so many of you are so effervescent about the impending event. Since we don’t know what or when AD Yow will bestow her knowledge upon us we have no choice but to contuinue to speculate and wish. We are more on the wishing team. Shaka is an excellent choice if he can continue to produce. Roy was an excellent choice, but what are the chances that we will lure a seasoned coach of that calibur. A young coach is appealing. We will keep wishing for a good, or may we should have said a winning coach. Thirty years of drought is more than enough. In the speculation department, how long will Roy and Mike keep coaching?

  4. Howler 03/30/2011 at 1:23 PM #

DG has made clear on his show that he knows Smart and the VCU AD very well. I think it is likely that his info. is coming from that side of the equation, and of course any contact they have had with the search firm or back channels is going to tell them that NCSU is very interested in him. But there may be several coaches out there who feel like they are State’s top choice. All that means is that DY and the search firm are doing their jobs competently. I am sure that Smart is A candidate, but not necessarily THE candidate. DG’s article is speculation like almost all of what is out there right now.

OK. This is about what I expected out of DY and this coaching search. Check to see if any “big names” are interested while lining up a solid mid-major to low major type of back up plan.

For those out there that think we shouldn’t have to settle for a mid-major coach let’s take a look at a few recent major conference openings and how they were filled.

    Clemson, BC, GT – mid-majors
Wake – Crappy major conf coach
UK – Cal & previously BCG who had 2 yrs at UTEP and 3 yrs at A&M
    Ohio State – mid-major
    Arizona – mid-major
    Mich – Big East coach
WVa – Big 12 coach (Wva Alum)
    UCLA – Big East coach
Kansas State – Asst with NO HC experience in college
Tenn – mid-major coaches (last two)
UGa, Ala – mid major coaches

So I would think that it would be tough to call it an indictment of our program or our AD if we end up with a mid-major coach. If you look at the list there is UCLA and UK. Those schools were able to go out and get highly regarded coaches to jump ship. UK even had to listen to talk about how far their program had fallen when they hired BCG. WVa was fortunate to have an alum the caliber of Huggy Bear.

I’m sure I’ve missed some major conference coaches who went to other major conference jobs over the last five years or so and I’m also sure some of you guys will add those to my list. I would certainly consider our program in the upper half of the ones listed above. Probably more like the upper third. But I don’t think anyone would argue that we are on par with UK and UCLA historically.

“One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.”

isn’t that comforting? but it doesn’t mean squat. everyone involved in angling for the best possible outcome for them. clearly, a good tactician has better odds of a positive outcome then a poor tactician.

  8. projectwentynine 03/30/2011 at 1:39 PM #

David Glen is a dork who doesn’t know crap. None of them do. I’d like to give all of these so-called media guys a karate chop right in the nuts.

  9. projectwentynine 03/30/2011 at 1:43 PM #

Maybe a karate kick would be better. I would prefer not to touch their nuts. But I do know karate.

TexPack, it’s not easy to convince most board monkeys, even though I agree with you reasoning from day one, they think they are in a beauty contest. Big names or bust. They never asked themselves why a big name, established coach at a stable program that he has built would just pick up and leave for our program. They only list the pros of our program, and i agree with them, but the pros of our program might not be enticing enough to leave their established programs.

  11. PacknSack 03/30/2011 at 1:51 PM #

We all know BD was a farce, but how hard would to be for someone at UF to say simply “He has not been contacted/is not interested in any other coaching jobs at this time.”? Direct. Simple. End of annoying speculation.

  12. anonimus 03/30/2011 at 1:54 PM #

I see all this rationalization about how we’ll look at Yow and this search when it’s all said and done and people are using unverifiable stories from numerous radio shows, tweets, national talking heads, media articles, etc. Many conflict one another and none, again, is verifiable. Somebody may have bits of the truth, but who and how much? Nobody knows but those in the know and none of these talking heads, bloggers, or otherwise have come out and said, “I spoke to X, Y, Z first hand and this is fact.” So we got some that are going to slit their wrists if we get a mid major (which is where most ALL non-elite’s get their coaches) b/c the Zombie John Wooden wasn’t really in the brick yard feeding the pigeons and having a beer with Woodson and Yow. This is ridiculous. Get grip people. Yes, we all want the best of the best but history shows, the best of the best don’t move around very much.

One more thing. Dave Glenn is ok at times but he’s obviously got to maintain a public image of a man that’s in the inner secret circles and knows things nobody else does. The problem with that persona is it doesn’t allow him much in the way of admitting mistakes and for those keeping score, he’s made many over the years. Admitting to them hurts his cred and the market value of his products (radio show, mag, etc.). I wear the red glasses so he does come across a bit blue at times but he has to be careful what he says about those guys b/c Swofford may not give him that interview next time. He’s a professional jock sniffer. All sports writers are that want to stay in it.

it is not anyone’s responsibility at UF to go out and do so so that we, our fans, can sleep well at night.’-).

  14. quypack93 03/30/2011 at 2:03 PM #

anonimus, good point. he hasn’t been wrong at everything, glen. in fact, he has been right most of the time. one thing about coaching search is that things change, people change their minds, and circumstances changes. there are many twists and turns. DY doesn’t have total control over everything. so glen’s info can be correct today but might not be tomorrow. fans, the minute some in the media reported what they don’t want to hear, automatically can whoever it might be an a$$. very predictable. this goes for all fans, not just ours.

  15. Wulfpack 03/30/2011 at 2:04 PM #

Because UF probably isn’t even remotely concerned about our plight.

as I read many of the comments, it has become clear WHY so many talking-heads enjoy biting into us as soon as they detect blood in the water… And, honestly, I don’t blame them! We as a fanbase will grasp at the unlikeliest of UNsubstantiated tidbits, then promptly shove an apple into our mouth and climb onto a platter!

SFN: Seriously, if you think our fanbase is any different from any other then I have a lot of property that I don’t own yet that you should buy. Human beings are human beings. There are not innate differences in NC State fans’ DNA than any other school.

I swear, half of you are gonna run this guy outta Raleigh before he even gets here. Everything I’ve read is that people had their eyes on Smart even before this run…this run isn’t his coming-out, it’s his proving everyone right.

Read that again. He was a hot commodity BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT.

We could do so much worse than this guy. Hell, we HAVE, for the last 3 coaches. Before that, we hired some jerk from Iona. What the hell kinda no-name place is Iona?

Bring on Shaka, and for the love of God, if we do get him, or whoever else we get, GIVE THEM A CHANCE. We’re throwing the money, and if no big name’s coming, no big name’s coming. We have to accept that, and instead of being whiny babies, we can hope we’ve stumbled across the next big thing…which I’d find more satisfying than stealing someone else’s big thing anyway.

  19. topwater 03/30/2011 at 2:19 PM #

What is going to annoy me greatly is when Debbie Yow comes out and says in coded words thanks to all the jackasses on these blogs spreading rumors that interfered with her ability to complete her search.

She may have had a chance to land a big name but when speculation results in internet rumors and some coach’s phone blowing up by alums, his boss or some dbag media member, the talk gets killed before it gets started.

That being said…..it is wildly entertaining and if nothing else NCSU bball will give me excitement every 5 years during the search.

  20. nseast8 03/30/2011 at 2:29 PM #

Lock: I agree with you 100%.

I would give much more credit to Yow for trusting her gut and hiring an up and coming star than by stealing away a great coach from another school. If this happens, I just hope our fanbase can be Smart about it.

  21. jessethewolf 03/30/2011 at 2:32 PM #

We fear Topwater is correct. We are in favor of letting AD Yow do her best and we’ll live with that. Topwater, if she is wrong and we get yet another coach that cannot produce wins, lets not wait five years for another search.

Do you know how VCU has been able to build and maintain a very successful program for the past decade? They go out and find the top college assistant and give them a shot at a head coaching job. Guess what? It’s working like a charm.

VCU has established themselves as the “fast track” to a high profile job, and that’s ok with them. While I’m sure they’d love to keep Capel, Grant and Smart they know that they really can’t. Instead, they make it their job to find the next “flavor of the month” to keep rolling with. Heck, I read an article earlier that they even founded an annual invite only conference for the best assistant coaches in the country. Talk about “smart” 🙂 When they need to fill their HC job, they already have their eyes on a few guys.

  23. Classof89 03/30/2011 at 2:48 PM #

FWIW, and as someone who was a student at the University for part of his tenure, Shaka is the coach I’ve seen on any of the candidate lists that most reminds me of Jim Valvano.

  24. nseast8 03/30/2011 at 2:53 PM #

My biggest fear is that by the time next week rolls around, after more wolfpackers have warmed up to the idea of a Smart hire, he turns us down.

  25. Lock 03/30/2011 at 2:54 PM #

As someone who worshipped V when I was a kid, I got the same impression. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a good coach…but it’s certainly the personality needed to win NCs, I’d argue.

I admit I like the guy. But even if I didn’t, we can’t fault Yow for not trying, and we can’t change other coaches’ perception of our job if it really is so bad. By being all pissy about our new coach before he’s even spoken to us, it only serves to justify their fears.
