Dave Glenn reports Barnes staying at Texas & recap of Tuesday’s wild Internet speculation

Note: Some of this entry was written last night. If you want to go straight to Dave Glenn’s Wed. update on our search, then go here and read the rest of the entry later.

______________________________________________________________

This entire entry could be a big waste of time because at this point we haven’t been able to verify the truth of any of the speculation we are about to make or the rumors we are about to point you towards. While it would be no surprise to SFN that Rick Barnes would have interest in coming to NC State, information on the search has been scarce and extremely hard to come by.

At times over the last few weeks we have thought we had a good feel for what was happening and the direction of the search. Of course, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that guys like Sean Miller who previously coached at NC State and Rick Barnes would eventually be targets of Debbie Yow. The order and the timing of how Yow dealt with the “big name” candidates was uncertain with several of these name coaches still in the NCAA tournament while at least one(Rick Barnes) was eliminated this past Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon was the first spike in Internet speculation that something was officially happening with the search. There are many critics of message boards, but as I pointed out with the UNC scandal very often big stories break on message boards and very often random posters on the Internet have the real story way before the media.

-Yesterday on Twitter, Dave Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal stated that he would have an update on the NC State coaching search posted shortly. He already had a story on the GT coaching search that we linked here.

-On Tuesday, I listened to Dave Glenn educate local callers that it was completely realistic that Barnes and Miller were candidates stating that he has known both coaches for 10 years and talked with them many times. Despite callers saying it was unrealistic and that NC State fans should be talking about mid-majors, Glenn was adamant that as long as Miller and Barnes haven’t said no then they are still candidates. If you will remember, then last week Glenn detailed how Uncle Jed bungled the coaching search five years ago especially in how we handled the courtship of Rick Barnes. Without Fowler in charge of the search 5 years ago, then it is likely the Sidney Lowe era never happens.

-On Monday, a normally reliable poster started this thread stating that Rick Barnes was to be in Raleigh at some point in the near future. This seemed to spark additional rumors about Barnes including potential sitings at the airport and on campus. In the age of cell phones, it is surprising that if Barnes really was on campus that someone didn’t snap a picture or shoot a video verifying his presence in Raleigh.

-Packpride runs their profile of Rick Barnes Tuesday afternoon. Coincidence? Then Packpride hosts a “Premium Chat” at 2:40 pm Tuesday which leads to more speculation and the spreading of additional rumors on Twitter and message boards about Barnes.

-Late yesterday afternoon/early evening www.packinsider.com posted this update:

We are unsure of what exactly that meeting was about, but the source, who previously said that he didn’t think Barnes was interested in the NC State position, has switched his tone and is now claiming that the current Texas coach is indeed looking very closely at the Wolfpack opening. Again, this is a source on the Barnes side which is how we were able to obtain this information.

*Update: To clarify, our source said nothing about Barnes NOT being in Raleigh. So if he was here yesterday or this morning, we don’t know about it. However, we’ve been told that he was not here this afternoon.

Read the full update. There is some Sean Miller information as well.

-This past Saturday, SFN ran with this entry on Rick Barnes. which was prompted by rumors on our message boards over the weekend of an offer to Barnes:

OK Rick said post it…I just wanted to be sure this site wasn’t like some others that want to keep everything hush hush because they’re scared it’ll cause anothe debacle like the last search if info slips out.

I was told by someone very close to the basketball team that we offered Rick Barnes yesterday. I hope he accepts! I was also told that C. J. Leslie will most likely not return next season. He most likely will declare for the draft but a transfer is also possible.

-What ever happened to Tuesday’s update from www.accsports.com and Dave Glenn? It was delayed until this morning:

DavidGlennShow David Glenn Show
@
@BKG1975 it will be in the morning…as we said on the show today things change all the time during these searches. I’ll tweet the link.

-Finally, Dave Glenn’s update just appeared minutes ago:

Arizona’s Sean Miller and Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart are among those who remain factors in the N.C. State coaching search, but Texas coach Rick Barnes no longer is in the mix, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.

“We all know this search wasn’t going to move forward until N.C. State found out where it stood with guys like Rick Barnes and Sean Miller,” an agent who works with college coaches told ACCSports.com. “Kudos to (State officials) for doing everything so quietly. I don’t even claim to know the details, and I know some of the people involved here. But Rick Barnes definitely is staying at Texas, so that search can start to take shape now.”

Shaka @ NCST = fail for Yow

here we go again. 2006 redux. jesus christ…

  3. Wulfpack 03/23/2011 at 10:31 AM #

Stevens ain’t coming here. He knows he will have his choice of jobs as long as he keeps Butler competitive. He will end up at a top 10 kind of job.

  4. ncsukyle 03/23/2011 at 10:32 AM #

I know that there is a slim likelihood, if any, that Stevens would come but is anyone seriously talking about him? They should at least give it a shot.

  5. kyjelly 03/23/2011 at 10:33 AM #

I am hearing DY has asked Gavin Grant to help on the search. Maybe he will get the gig.

  6. Boyd 03/23/2011 at 10:35 AM #

Why the **** would she ask Gavin Grant for anything?

  7. nav 03/23/2011 at 10:39 AM #

^I think the GG thing was a joke.

  8. nav 03/23/2011 at 10:40 AM #

Honestly, does this really surprise anyone? We are State after all. Good things don’t happen to our school. In the depths of our hearts we have that feeling that things just won’t end well.

  9. IMFletcherWolf 03/23/2011 at 10:41 AM #

I don’t know if Smart is the best alternative if Miller, etc turn us down. But if DY says he is, then I’ll take her word. She has the future of our basketball program in her hands.

  10. drgreenhouse 03/23/2011 at 10:42 AM #

^With GG, we know that we’ll only have 4 losses per year. He can guarantee it.

  11. PackisRolling 03/23/2011 at 10:43 AM #

^Nav – unfortunately you are right. same old state. sure hope to be proven wrong with DY still getting a HR hire. not confident though.

now it will show SM was 2nd choice and that probably won’t go over well.

  12. Wulfpack 03/23/2011 at 10:49 AM #

I have a very hard time justifying that Smart is an A list guy at this stage in his career. Hell, VCU was the last team in. There is a GIANT gap between Barnes/Miller and then Smart. There are a ton of other guys I would like to see considered — guys that have proven they can sustain programs. And I’m not even convinced that Smart is the best young coach out there. So if it is him, I will have many questions.

  13. Ed89 03/23/2011 at 10:51 AM #

Miller actually makes alot more sense – in many ways – than Barnes. After Miller, Shaka Smart would be a good choice. I do like Marshall, Smart, and Mooney. Turgeon is a wild card, too.

  14. PackisRolling 03/23/2011 at 10:56 AM #

i posted this yesterday on the boards…my list in order:

1 Stevens / Donovan (pipe dream homeruns)
    2 [Barnes-NO] / Miller (solid triples)
    3 Turgeon (double)
4 Marshall / Smart / Grant / other mid-major guys (The mighty Debbie has struck out)

So…does a No from a tier 2 also eliminate tier 1? I’d say probably so.

    Oh No…WE SUCK AGAIN!

  15. packbackr04 03/23/2011 at 11:05 AM #

Packisrolling^ “now it will show SM was 2nd choice and that probably won’t go over well.”

i think this shows exactly the opposite. SM was #1, and barnes wasnt willing to wait around for us to hear back from Miller so he puts it out there that he isnt going anywhere.

  16. Boyd 03/23/2011 at 11:06 AM #

    packbackr,

I think this is more plausible. There’s no proof that we actually offered Barnes anything. I think this search is still under wraps, and we all just need to relax.

  17. ClassOf91 03/23/2011 at 11:08 AM #

Keep in mind that all this Barnes stuff from Smokey is third hand or so. It could just be something out there to calm everything down after the insanity of yesterday until a deal gets reached. Look at the Arkansas situation as an example.

Though it seems like the coaching search has been going on a while, we are officially only at the 8th day. No one has made a definitive move except for Providence, so it’s still early. By Sunday night, which seems like a long time away, there will only be 4 NCAA tourney coaches left standing. I am hopeful that none of them will be candidates for our job. So looks like things will start picking up this weekend and early next week. We just need to hang tight til then.

  19. ClassOf91 03/23/2011 at 11:22 AM #

I thought the BG->Texas Tech was a done deal

  20. PackisRolling 03/23/2011 at 11:23 AM #

^ solid reasons not to freak out…but i just fear i’ve seen this movie before.

  21. wolfie91 03/23/2011 at 11:28 AM #

classof91 i think you are right. forgot about that one.

  22. JT 03/23/2011 at 11:41 AM #

The sky isn’t falling. Who knows who will end up here? There are a lot of good candidates and any of them could be excellent. A Barnes hire to me would seem like nothing more than an upgraded version of a Tubby hire (safe, probably quite successful, but with a hint of caretaking); I’d rather have a younger guy come here and have been a bit confused by the fascination with Barnes. Miller might come but I’m not going to sweat a guy leaving Arizona after just getting established there- that’s a sweet gig. The only really big-timer I’d like would be Donovan. But besides those guys there are others I’d love at State. Stevens would be nice but he’s as unproven as anybody in terms of competing in a big league- obviously a good coach but not a sure thing, only a top flight mid major who hasn’t had to recruit against the big boys. Long story short, I ain’t worried. I’m excited about the possibilities.

  23. Prowling Woofie 03/23/2011 at 11:44 AM #

Hence the wisdom of using a search firm…no offer has been publicly extended, accepted, or rejected at this point. Interest has probably been expressed and is being gauged.

The more frantic crap we post, the worse we make it look. Settle down, everyone…we’re early in the process.

  24. patientwuf 03/23/2011 at 11:52 AM #

    Good point wolf91.

I hope our potential coach is still in the dance. I am waiting to be surprised Sunday night or Monday.

  25. Howler 03/23/2011 at 11:55 AM #

Been listening to Glenn’s radio show a lot lately. He is apparently pretty close with Shaka Smart, and he thinks Smart is going to be the next great thing in coaching.

I trust Debbie. The rumor mill always gets fans nervous, but I am perfectly happy to let the process go for two or three weeks and then let Debbie give us a reason to applaud her. I feel 100% different than five years ago.
