ACC Sports Journal Press Conference Recap (keep checking for more updates!)

For those that missed the press conference live or don’t have the time to watch or listen, then here is a great recap from the ACC Sports Journal of tonight’s impressive performance by AD Debbie Yow. Behind the scenes here at Statefansnation since her hire, the author team has talked continuously about what a difference having a real, live, professional athletic director has made in terms of how things are handled at the university and especially in terms of public communication such as tonight.

Yow’s Not Making A Sales Pitch:

This hypothetical situation was posed: ‘What if a candidate expresses concern about coaching down the road from Duke and UNC? What sort of pitch do you make?’

You could tell that Yow was waiting to pounce on this one.

“I don’t have a pitch. My pitch is thank you for your limited interest, and we’ll be moving on ” she said. “The last thing I need is to try to convince some guy, some coach that this is doable. I want someone with the vision, the passion, the chutzpah, to tell me, it’s doable.”

-Also, the ACC Sports Journal provide audio of the press conference in two links:

Part 1 and Part 2

-Here is a link to an interview with Julius Hodge from WRAL.

Packpride has a partial transcript of the press conference:

“No one who is a viable candidate who is coaching in the NCAA Tournament wants to do anything other than focus right now than trying to advance, and I understand that. I respect it. But we will be making some contacts, probably through the search firm, and we’ll be very respectful of their time.”

We led this entry with a picture of our current AD.  Here is a picture of our last one:

Thanks Wolfy__79…Trying to help anyway that I can, for what its worth. I’m ready to see the wolfpack nation back on top. My main point is theres plenty of great coaches out there, so theres no excuse to blow it this time around. GO PACK!!!

    bradley:

    (1) I do know the name.

    (2) I don’t want to reveal it because I’m afraid that naming names publicly could hurt the search in some way.

    (3) I only mentioned it at all in response to PoppaJohn’s post, and because I think people are interested in knowing that there is stuff going on behind the scenes and has been for some time.

    (4) I got the info from a member of the coach’s family, who is a family friend. I’m confident enough in it to say it is a fact, unless someone is just flat lying (and I have no reason to think they would do so).

tvp1 – fair enough, sounds good. Can you rank this coaching prospect on a scale of 1-10, maybe?

or at least with a letter grade A-level, B-level, etc.?

    thanks!

as she said yesterday.. she’s been an ad for some 22 years. i can only imagine that there have been conversations to this point and i’ve also heard of these conversations through alumni and the like. it was safe for her to have informal conversations at the beginning of the season even not having her mind made up then. naming names would fuel a fire that she clearly pointed to yesterday as something that absolutely isn’t going to happen. the name dropping thing only increase speculation to an unhealthy level. she asked us to be patient.. calling this is being done “quietly..” to me, quietly began in the fall. since arriving in raleigh, she’s been on site for practices, meetings and reviews with all coaches.. she’s engage the school in a way that we haven’t seen done professionally since the 70’s. well, now having felt out the state of nc state… she’s making her calculated moves. i look forward to seeing the media trying to dissect yesterdays presser… and getting shredded!

    PACK!

i bet you can find the possible coach in the top ten on wooviewolf’s list of coaches…

tvp1, glad to hear it. I wouldn’t want someone naming names if it might hurt the search. Although, if we worked together, I sure wouldn’t mind hearing the name while discussing it by the water cooler. 🙂

tvp1, one more question. You just said we’ve had back-channel discussions with him. How interested is this coach in the NC State job? What is the likelihood of him being here a month from now?

  9. PoppaJohn 03/16/2011 at 4:59 PM #

Very interesting, I hope it is true. (you aren’t fenir or adventeroo are you?)
… and I hope it is someone good.

The coach expressed interest in our job through the intermediary (I do not know if we contacted him first or vice versa). I don’t know when the first discussions took place but it was no later than last week. It’s someone currently coaching an NCAA tournament team. I don’t really want to divulge other details.

I do not know if he’ll take the job or not and I suspect that I won’t get anymore information now that the job is officially open. From this point forward I’m probably just sitting back and watching the process unfold like the rest of you.

Wolviewolf, not sure how you came up with name of Saint Marys’ coach. It is Randy Bennett, and yes he should be seriously considered with his accomplishments there, with lesser talent, but they play disciplined basketball, and high scoring offense, so can only imagine what he could do with our talent. His team was left out of the NCAAA tournament, even though they won the regular season, and that wouldn’t happen if he coached in the ACC. Definitely would be a step up for him.

mak4dpak= Correction.. Mount St. Marys(Md). Robert Burke is a name that most don’t know about. He was an assistant behind Thompson III at Georgetown, great resume. But yes Randy Bennett of St. Mary(Ca). is also a good choice.

tvp1, I appreciate all the info, and also that you’re not naming names trying to be impressive by knowing something. I’d hate to see the process hampered by someone talking too much.

I trust what you’re saying, because you haven’t said anything that you could come back later and gloat about being right. Basically, all you’ve said is we’ve talked to someone that is currently in the dance. But no matter who we end up hiring, there is really no way to prove that you were wrong or right about it. You have a silent confidence about what you’re saying, and it gives me an even better feeling that we’re going to bring in someone that we’re all going to like.

On another note my list is based opon, winning, recruiting, and familiar to east coast(minis a few in this catagory). All qualities I would want and as I understand DY wants also.
