ACC Sports Journal Press Conference Recap (keep checking for more updates!)

For those that missed the press conference live or don’t have the time to watch or listen, then here is a great recap from the ACC Sports Journal of tonight’s impressive performance by AD Debbie Yow. Behind the scenes here at Statefansnation since her hire, the author team has talked continuously about what a difference having a real, live, professional athletic director has made in terms of how things are handled at the university and especially in terms of public communication such as tonight.

Yow’s Not Making A Sales Pitch:

This hypothetical situation was posed: ‘What if a candidate expresses concern about coaching down the road from Duke and UNC? What sort of pitch do you make?’

You could tell that Yow was waiting to pounce on this one.

“I don’t have a pitch. My pitch is thank you for your limited interest, and we’ll be moving on ” she said. “The last thing I need is to try to convince some guy, some coach that this is doable. I want someone with the vision, the passion, the chutzpah, to tell me, it’s doable.”

-Also, the ACC Sports Journal provide audio of the press conference in two links:

Part 1 and Part 2

-Here is a link to an interview with Julius Hodge from WRAL.

Packpride has a partial transcript of the press conference:

“No one who is a viable candidate who is coaching in the NCAA Tournament wants to do anything other than focus right now than trying to advance, and I understand that. I respect it. But we will be making some contacts, probably through the search firm, and we’ll be very respectful of their time.”

“I want teams to NOT look forward to playing us” Yes, I long for those days too. In fact, we were that team in the mid 70’s. I remember when UNC stormed the court after beating us – believe it! All I am trying to say is that we must walk before we can run. If you do not think there should be “some” concern given our current status, then that is not being realistic.

  2. wolfie91 03/15/2011 at 10:44 PM #

I don’t know, at this point in our program’s history, to express concern about Duke and UNC would be blinking, and we need someone who isn’t even going to blink.

Just watched the video of Dr. Yow’s press conference: Wow – What a great professional she is! She clearly knows what the Wolfpack Nation expects and she has a plan for getting there. I also like the way she handles the press: informative, polite, intelligent but FIRM. Not afraid to say “that’s inappropriate.” Unless I’m greatly mistaken, she’s a keeper. Thought Monte handled his portion well, too. It’s good that he’ll be around to help the kids through the next few difficult months. Hopefully, Sid will remain a willing participant in the Wolfpack Family. Just because this didn’t work out doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate all that he’s done. Sounds like DY understands that, too. Now, I’ve just got to be patient – and that’s the hard part. Go Wolfpack!

“If a person comes out and says ‘I was offered the NC State job and turned it down’, and I know they weren’t offered it, I’m probably gonna say something.”

I think this is my favorite quote from the presser. Reading between the lines, this says to me:

“I’m putting all of you, who would seek to use us to better your own situations at our expense, on notice: Don’t F#%k with us or I will embarrass you publicly”

Hearing that felt like a Tiger protecting her young. She knows what happened last time and how bad the university was made to look. She doesn’t appear to be willing to let this thing get out of control and have a repeat. I love it.

  5. Wufpacker 03/15/2011 at 11:14 PM #

Check that…make that a WOLF protecting her young. I’d say she’s earned it.

  6. GoneFishin 03/15/2011 at 11:18 PM #

Wow. I just watched the entire replay myself. She’s light years past the former administration. Wow, again.

This is the type of response from someone I would want to work for. She expects results, she can hold a fair and intelligent conversation around that, she understands that you need certain resources to succeed and seems to be willing to provide them, assuming you can perform. Can’t ask for more.

This is the first public forum where I’ve heard her speak, she knocked it out of the park. I love Sid, but I’m warming up to trust in AD Yow.

This has been a sad day. Sid and Monte have been a part of our lives for a long, long time. They both exhibit a sincere love for the university. However, I haven’t felt this good about the leadership at our University in a long time. I thought all parties involved conducted themselves impressively. Dr.Yow could not have done any better. Knowing that Chancellor Woodson is behind the scenes makes me more comfortable. We are doing it the right way!

I’ll just say that I have not felt a sense of confidence about a hire since my little” PIZAN ” from New York back in 1980. That is how DY made me feel today. May God direct her to make the right decision, AMEN…

That press conference and in particular the answer from DY about a candidate actually having some balls literally brought a tear to my eye.

She gets being a Wolfpacker. She gets it all.

    It’s a brave new world.

Thank you Sidney for being so professional and classy through all this – and most importantly thank you for being a member of the Wolfpack family. Godspeed.

DY: ‘The Wolfpack fanbase and their passion is a good thing.’ Things are different now.

  10. Wolfy__79 03/16/2011 at 12:35 AM #

wooviewolf71~ that’s a pretty darn good list of coaches. DY says she’s got one that is in the single digits. i think she’s about to find a fantastic hire!!

…one thing i heard in her comments is that she’s not opposed to an older proven coach that can turn a program. .. that leads me away from miller a bit? as the season went along, it seems that miller is one of my favorites.

  11. Wolfy__79 03/16/2011 at 12:50 AM #

as far as concerns about unc/duke.. we’ve sucked eggs for a quarter century and still do not bow to those clowns. these two teams are beatable.. i loved her response about thank you for your limited interest!! HAHAHAHAHA! she also said she’ll play the leadership and supportive role. that is a recipe for success paired with passionate fans.

this is the perfect oppurtunity to really put our entire athletic program back on the map. i liked the little push she publicly gave TOB as well.. 1979 is along time ago!!

she is tough! i heard a few uh duh questions come out before the conference was over. i can’t wait for the local and national media response on today’s events. NC STATE has handled this transition PERFECTLY! look at how some of these other schools have handled these moves now and in the past!!

  12. Wolfy__79 03/16/2011 at 12:53 AM #

^ntm the bidding process with adidas/nike/underarmour for example 🙂

there are so many bargaining chips at our disposal it’s rediculous. there will be plenty of incentives to go around for a winner!!

    PACK!

  13. nav 03/16/2011 at 7:00 AM #

Maybe I’m reading too much, I probably am, from his comments but Tyler Lewis’s comments about the next coach were,

“Let’s just say the coach is in the NCAA tournament right now,” he said. “That’s all they told me.”

This sounds very singular. I wonder if that is actually the way Dr Yow represented it to Lewis and if we really are that focused on one and only one coach at this time.

  14. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/16/2011 at 7:23 AM #

I think there are probably a lot of very good coaches that wouldn’t want to work for a personality like Yow. However, I think a coach that can work with someone with her management style will have a very determined personality and a desire for a highly level of successful.

I think Sid and Yow’s style were not in line with one another at all. I see Lowe as more the type of coach that pats a player on the butt when he makes a mistake. Yow seems like a manager that will kick you in the azz when you mess up.

Both styles are valid but these two personalities shouldn’t be working together because they will never understand how the other thinks.

  15. Wufpacker 03/16/2011 at 7:24 AM #

I certainly won’t go out on a limb and say that it’s impossible that they’ve narrowed it that far at this point (and that therefore some things said in the presser were a smoke screen of sorts)….

However, I feel pretty certain that IF things are that far along with any particular individual, they would likely not say so at this point even to the players, let alone to an unsigned recruit. I suspect this quote is the product of a quick and hurried phone call and an excited kid hearing what he wanted to hear (or perhaps even getting the message second or third hand).

  16. Pack1997 03/16/2011 at 7:30 AM #

I agree, don’t think they would have told a recruit or the players anything at this point except we want someone in the tourney field right now.

My wife is not a big sports fan, but stated during the presser that DY owned the media. You could tell how she handled the questions, gave enough to answer but not enough to hamper the search or be disrespectful. The media did not push her like they would a Lee Fowler, and you could also tell they had more respect for her just by how they phrased some of their questions.

  17. Fenrir 03/16/2011 at 8:03 AM #

wow, leadership what a concept! there are great things about to happen in Raleigh. you guys think i’m blowing smoke up your a&&es so i can say yep that’s my guy, but that’s not the case. i will be the first to say my info was wrong. i have shared my info with others on this board and they can admonish or acknowlege me once the deed is done.

there is one thing that we all must be ready for though. nc state was once a powerful force in the basketball world. many of you are now smirking and saying yeah right. our youngsters, my children (nc state grads)only have us old timers around to tell of the glory days. i can remember when unc and state were the biggest rivals in the country. now they chant in our house “not our rivals”. well folks that’s all about to change. we have all sat here before with great anticipation only to be disappointed. wait till next year has become our motto. that will not be the case this time! this new regiem gets it 100%. we will be transformed in the twinkeling an eye. something glorious is about to happen!!

  18. Prowling Woofie 03/16/2011 at 8:38 AM #

Loved the press conference – thought Dr. Yow was the consummate professional, and the perfect forward-looking image of the school and athletic department. The response about the prospect with concerns about UNC and Duke was priceless – thanks for your limited interest !

Also loved Monte’s statements: his appreciation for the school, for Dr. Yow’s confidence in his ability to handle the transition, and especially for Lowe, for giving him the opportunity to come back to NC State. Thought it was particularly touching that Monte had a hand in recruiting Sid out of Dematha, and five years ago, Sid recruited Monte away from New Orleans. Now Sid has given Monte his blessing to get things done. Gotta love the passion and concern for the betterment of the Wolfpack program from all concerned.

Class shines through, folks, and last night, it was blinding !

  19. NCSUPackfan 03/16/2011 at 9:02 AM #

What if we hit a homerun with the next coach? What will Raleigh be like? I think the guys on 99.9 said it right yesterday to a caller… We the Wolfpack Nation are hungry for success. It would be fun to be good again.

  20. PoppaJohn 03/16/2011 at 9:14 AM #

Why do people keep calling her Doctor Yow? She’s not a PHD is she? If so, I missed it. If she has an honorary doctorate, do you call someone Doctor? My kid got ‘honorary pilot wings’ on a flight, but they don’t call him captain. (or let him fly the plane)

Loved the presser, and appreciated that she gave us (the fans) some counsel that we need to be patient, it will take time to do it right.

Surprised that Harris is gone already. I thought he’d be retained through the interim to manage the recruits.

Despite all of our imaginings, it sounds to me like:
    1) There have been no contacts made yet
    2) There is definately no ‘done deal’ in place
    3) The search firm has not been hired
    4) The search committee will be a very small group of advisors
    5) Sean Miller is saying he isn’t interested

    But we were right on:
    1) The target coaches are in the NCAAT
    2) This will be a quiet search – we won’t know until she tells us
    3) We’re in good hands
    4) And this is a good job – as evidenced by D1 coaches expressing interest

  21. triadwolf 03/16/2011 at 11:31 AM #

^You really can’t read too much into what she said because there are PR aspects she has to consider.

    1) There has most definitely been back channel contacts made or else she would not have decided to fire Lowe – she has a high level of confidence in finding a replacement, not just a wish list;
    2) In the interest of not appearing to “force out” Lowe and out of respect to the coach(s) still in the tournament, she would not say there was a deal in place even if there was;
    3) A search firm can’t be hired (PR wise) until you have an open position, that does not mean she has not been talking with and maybe even using a firm(s);
    4) “The search committee will be a very small group of advisors” As it should be and they probably all already know who they are and have probably all already had input;
    5) Sean Miller is saying exactly what he should say while he is coaching a team in the NCAA tourney.

There is nothing to cause alarm or eliminate any potential candidates based on what she said yesterday. Than is how a professional press conference should work – she gave a benchmark type presser.

The way I see it is who wouldn’t want this job? Coaching at N.C. State has to be one of the 15 most prestigious coaching jobs in America period. Plus you get a chance to play in the ACC and play Duke and Carolina and revive a rivarly? If your a coach out there and you don’t want the challenge of beating those fools down the road and challenging yourself to be the BEST COACH in the nation then keep your ass where your at.

  23. jncope 03/16/2011 at 12:06 PM #

I think it is funny in a way that a scandal (or perceived scandal) caused our basketball downfall and that another scandal (with the former chancellor) is going to (indirectly – because Yow was hired as a result) be our salvation.

  24. tvp1 03/16/2011 at 12:09 PM #

We have had back-channel discussions with a current head coach. Absolute fact.

  25. bradleyb123 03/16/2011 at 12:48 PM #

^^ tvp1, if you know this as an “absolute fact”, do you also know his name? If you don’t want to reveal the name, fine. I’m just curious how you know this as a fact. And if you’re keeping his name to yourself, why? Protecting sources? Tying not to hinder Debbie’s effort in getting this guy?

People make a lot of absolute statements like this her, but then you find out it is just something they believed very strongly.
