ESPN Blog: NC State tailor-made for Tubby(Updated Tubby entry – 3:15 pm)

Updated at 3:15 pm:

Apparently Eamonn Brennan of College Basketball Nation Blog hasn’t gotten the memo from the national talking heads yet. He thinks one of the best coaches of the last 20 years might actually be a realistic target for NC State:

Smith is clearly frustrated, and with good reason; 2010-11 is the second-straight promising Gophers season derailed by injuries and personnel woes, from Nolen to starting guard Devoe Joseph, who surprised Minnesota with a midseason transfer in January. But do his quotes say something larger about his desire to leave Minneapolis this offseason? There are always rumblings around Smith — he was one of many candidates rumored to be in the picture at Oregon last summer — and the impending job openings at Georgia Tech and NC State would seem tailor-made for him if he decided to leave.

What’s more, no less reliable a source than our own Doug Gottlieb is already hearing the rumor-mill murmurs about Smith’s potential departure:

The hottest chatter in coaching news is the speculation that Tubby Smith will be on the move this offseason. Three different head coaches told me the coaching fraternity is abuzz over whether Georgia Tech will buy out Paul Hewitt (reportedly in excess of $5 million dollars) and land Smith.

We have plenty of time to await that news. In the meantime, one thing is clear: Smith isn’t happy. The extent of that unhappiness — whether it’s reserved to this year’s team, or involves his program and situation at large — will be one of the more intriguing stories in what should be an otherwise quiet rumor mill this spring.

Monday Morning’s initial entry:

Below is the latest report on Tubby Smith’s status beyond this season at Minnesota. Smith has been discussed behind the scenes by the authors of Statefansnation as one of the top, realistic potential hires for NC State. He has previously been tied to Debbie Yow as a replacement for Gary Williams two years ago. Also, he and his family have strong reasons to get back to the south with family in Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. Tubby played college basketball at High Point University where he also met his wife. One of his first coaching jobs was a high school job in Hoke County, NC.

Finishing his career at Minnesota makes very little sense for his family(at least to us) and Minnesota is nowhere near building the practice facility that was promised to him when he took the job. The funding isn’t even close to in place yet. Smith turns 60 years old this year. He probably has 5-8 years left in his career and he needs to make the jump sooner rather than later as his age will become more of a factor in landing his last high-major opportunity.

One source has indicated that one of the openings he would be interested in going into the season was NC State.

Sources have told ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb that Tubby Smith will leave Minnesota after this season.

There’s some speculation over whether Georgia Tech will buy out the remainder of Paul Hewitt’s contract and land Smith.

The Gophers are 17-11 overall and 6-10 in the Big Ten.

yes donovan is a dream to me as well!! and i too do not see it happening. i do however see gT moving on tubby.. history burns me when thinking of a big hire but i also have a quiet confidence in dY.

age doesn’t scare me as much as the past two decades of nonsense we’ve dealt with! insert any competitive coach and we’ll improve. i’m hoping for the caliber of improvement that will return us to being a lead horse in the acc. alot of hires could get us to top five and bubblesque when thinking of acc championships.

there are a few players that would possibly leave imo: leslie, harrow, brown. i’m not sold on any of them jumping ship. i think sidney, coaching aside, has done a fantastic job of maintaining the moral when it comes to these possibilities.

the others: wood, cjw, howell, painter, vandenburg.. these kids aren’t going anywhere and they have the potential of being very good on their own w/out our three freshman. to me, these guys not leaving equals keeping almost all the players! i just really don’t see any of these guys jumping ship. unless there are alot of mistakes with letting sidney go.

packalum44^ im not sure for the reason Tubbys recruitment appears lackluster. i dont really follow that closely. although i am sure some of it could be attributed (at least in recent yrs) to his location. Minnesota is not exactly a destination. its cold and crappy there.

i would like to see his overall recruiting #’s though to back up his recruiting prowess. a set from KY days and now MN days.

I just looked at Tubby’s rosters at UK, plus their records during his stint and I’m not sure where people are getting that he couldn’t recruit from? One player for instance was definitely Rondo, who made up the top rated recruiting class that year towards the end of Tubby’s tenure. Rondo is one of the most underrated players in the NBA IMO. Also, a later carry over as Tubby departed would be Jodie Meeks, who could go for the 40s in games. All in all, he put together solid college players, and 3-4 superstars who carried teams to 20 and 25+ wins.
    Just a thought.

..i also think any coaching hire will have baggage. tubby too, read the link above. but seriously, it’s the gophers. it sounds like he’s not happy with things they have promised and they aren’t happy with some things he’s done? where he’s looking for a practice facility and they are shooting him down for getting them to the ncaa’s very early upon his arrival? and the link mentions the roster for next year not looking to stout?? probably b/c he’s not getting what he needs from facility standpoint to aid recruiting.

Recruiting shouldn’t be a problem for most coaches we could hire. The only time we haven’t recruited well was during Les’ era, because of severe restrictions. Hire a good coach and the recruits will come.

  8. Wolfy__79 02/28/2011 at 3:24 PM #

… here’s my question.. why shouldn’t we have a huge budget for some of these big name coaches. ncaab is a revenue sport after all, right?

even if we’re talking to a young coach there should be a great compensation package for favorable result..

but for the big dogs, which will if nothing else improve revenues out of the gates, why not go BIGGGGGG!? i just hope we don’t fail b/c of a crap $ package!!

I haven’t read all 3 pages yet, but after reading the first page it seems everyone’s biggest fear is recruiting. If there is one thing Sid could do – it was recruit. Probably no change in h*ll, but could anyone see Sid joining his staff as a recruiter? Just something interesting to kick around.

  10. triadwolf 02/28/2011 at 3:41 PM #

The only way I could see Sid staying on staff is if he for some reason has decided that he wants to be a college coach going forward and stays on to learn from someone like Tubby. But I just don’t think that is anywhere close to likely. Besides it could definitely cause chain of command problems with current players.

  11. Wolfy__79 02/28/2011 at 3:43 PM #

i would love to have sidney lowe to continue to recruit for us! but not at the cost of a new head coach. i’m sure there are ways to incorporate him somewhere in the athletic department but this isn’t very high on the totem pole for me..

  12. Tampa-Pack 02/28/2011 at 3:47 PM #

^ I agree completely. If Tubby (or whoever might be coming), then its thanks Sid for everything, have a good one, see you at the reunion. I have no idea who’s on Tubby’s staff (other than his son), but with a guy who has the history as he does, it doesn’t really matter. He has already earned his keep. Just to calm everyone’s fears, it would be nice if he has, or adds, someone known as a recruiter. This would be a great hire, if it comes through….

  13. Tampa-Pack 02/28/2011 at 3:56 PM #

meant to say if tubby (or whoever) doesn’t want Sid, then…

  14. wolfpackbball 02/28/2011 at 4:00 PM #

While Tubby would not be my first thought, if he is interested in moving to Raleigh for a 5 year farewell tour (without breaking the bank)I think we have to hire him.

  15. wufpup76 02/28/2011 at 4:03 PM #

““Hot Tubby Time Machine.” Back to the seventies or eighties please!”

    ^Very good!

  16. Tampa-Pack 02/28/2011 at 4:04 PM #

But, but, but how could he even consider GT or NC State, he would have to compete against Duke AND UNC every season?!?

  17. howlie 02/28/2011 at 4:46 PM #

I fear Tubby’s best days are past, & that the game has passed him by. He had the resources of the universe at KY, & couldn’t maintain the program–dissolving before his eyes. Hoever, he was great at turning a ‘nobody’ BB school into one of high-to-middlin’ mediocrity. That, we don’t need.

I’d rather have Bob Knight for ONE year of ballistics & certain on-court results; than a Tub/Herb redo of malaise and early retirement. Unless Tubby could bring in a Gene Keady-type pair of high-volume, intense, assistants–or one’s that could recruit the world–I think we could do better with an up-&-comer whose job is on the line.

  18. Ed89 02/28/2011 at 4:51 PM #

Is he grooming his son to take his place, ala Bobby/Pat Knight?? If so, I’m not sure about it.

Other than that, I think he’d make sense. I’m just not sure about the nepotism aspect. Can anyone recall where that turned out well? I know Sean Sutton was a bust at Oklahoma State, Pat Knight isn’t doing well at Texas Tech. If he had another quality assistant (that wasn’t his son), ala Jamie Dixon/Tom Izzo/Matt Painter type to take over the reins, I’d be more for that scenario.

  19. ushum 02/28/2011 at 4:58 PM #

if Tubby ever stated that he would take the job only if Saul was the next coach, you either lie to him and say ok, and then kick Saul to the curb as soon as Tubby departs or you tell him to his face hell no.

  20. VaWolf82 02/28/2011 at 4:59 PM #

I don’t buy the spin that Sid was a great recruiter. If he was such a great recruiter, why has State sucked for his entire tenure? Why did it take so long to get ACC-caliber point guards?

I wish Sid nothing but the best going forward, but I seriously doubt that he will be on staff anywhere in State’s athletic dept.

  21. JEOH2 02/28/2011 at 5:01 PM #

    I just disagree howlie…a few questions…

    1. How did Kentucky “dissolve” compared to where they are now?

    2. Tubby & Herb are comparable in what sense?

    3. haven’t we tried this “up & comer” route before without success? is there an “up and comer” who is a sure thing out there and not a flop/mediocre like most of them are?

  22. Moose Hunter 02/28/2011 at 5:30 PM #

Not that it matters, but a Tubby! hire means you will never hear the name Sendek and State mentioned again. It would truly be the end.

  23. nycfan 02/28/2011 at 5:36 PM #

Tubby would make an instant difference for the better at NC State, both in terms of the fortunes of the basketball team and the media coverage of same.

I will quibble a bit with the legend of Lowe, the recruiter. While he has landed several big time recruits, he seems the recruiting equivalent of a coach who only gets up for big games. He’s had plenty of misses and at least a couple of screw ups in terms of commitments not getting qualified. But mainly, he is so busy swinging for the fences that his supporting cast recruiting has been unimpressive to date. When I watch NC guys like Victor Davila, Garius Adams, Reggie Johnson, Ty Walker & JT Terrell play (not to mention, say, Chris Warren at Ole Miss), I often find myself scratching my head in comparison to some of the kids who have been on State’s rosters during Lowe’s tenure. Most of State’s great teams have been built in large part with NC kids who weren’t tagged as top 10 players (though that DeMatha pipeline Valvano cultivated worked out nicely, too).

  24. wufpup76 02/28/2011 at 5:41 PM #

“Not that it matters, but a Tubby! hire means you will never hear the name Sendek and State mentioned again. It would truly be the end.”

^Probably true. I can’t see Espn throwing up a ‘selected seasons’ graphic comparing Hwsnbn and Tubby! in the middle of a State game.

At this point we all know Hwsnbn is John Wooden, Jr., so why bother with craapy graphics containing cherry-picked data?

  25. wufpup76 02/28/2011 at 5:52 PM #

^^nycfan – I agree by and large with your post, but I don’t want anything to do with a guy like JT Terrell.

He’s got some skills, but he takes terrible me-first shots, makes awful decisions and in general seems to value his shots and stats more than the team (all the trimmings of the perfect team cancer). I know some Wake fans can’t stand him and I laughed when I saw him play for five minutes b/c I knew Wake would suck with players playing like that.

I know that’s off topic so please forgive me, but I’ve been wanting to rant on Terrell for some time now.

    In other news, go Tubby!
