ESPN Blog: NC State tailor-made for Tubby(Updated Tubby entry – 3:15 pm)

Updated at 3:15 pm:

Apparently Eamonn Brennan of College Basketball Nation Blog hasn’t gotten the memo from the national talking heads yet. He thinks one of the best coaches of the last 20 years might actually be a realistic target for NC State:

Smith is clearly frustrated, and with good reason; 2010-11 is the second-straight promising Gophers season derailed by injuries and personnel woes, from Nolen to starting guard Devoe Joseph, who surprised Minnesota with a midseason transfer in January. But do his quotes say something larger about his desire to leave Minneapolis this offseason? There are always rumblings around Smith — he was one of many candidates rumored to be in the picture at Oregon last summer — and the impending job openings at Georgia Tech and NC State would seem tailor-made for him if he decided to leave.

What’s more, no less reliable a source than our own Doug Gottlieb is already hearing the rumor-mill murmurs about Smith’s potential departure:

The hottest chatter in coaching news is the speculation that Tubby Smith will be on the move this offseason. Three different head coaches told me the coaching fraternity is abuzz over whether Georgia Tech will buy out Paul Hewitt (reportedly in excess of $5 million dollars) and land Smith.

We have plenty of time to await that news. In the meantime, one thing is clear: Smith isn’t happy. The extent of that unhappiness — whether it’s reserved to this year’s team, or involves his program and situation at large — will be one of the more intriguing stories in what should be an otherwise quiet rumor mill this spring.

Monday Morning’s initial entry:

Below is the latest report on Tubby Smith’s status beyond this season at Minnesota. Smith has been discussed behind the scenes by the authors of Statefansnation as one of the top, realistic potential hires for NC State. He has previously been tied to Debbie Yow as a replacement for Gary Williams two years ago. Also, he and his family have strong reasons to get back to the south with family in Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. Tubby played college basketball at High Point University where he also met his wife. One of his first coaching jobs was a high school job in Hoke County, NC.

Finishing his career at Minnesota makes very little sense for his family(at least to us) and Minnesota is nowhere near building the practice facility that was promised to him when he took the job. The funding isn’t even close to in place yet. Smith turns 60 years old this year. He probably has 5-8 years left in his career and he needs to make the jump sooner rather than later as his age will become more of a factor in landing his last high-major opportunity.

One source has indicated that one of the openings he would be interested in going into the season was NC State.

Sources have told ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb that Tubby Smith will leave Minnesota after this season.

There’s some speculation over whether Georgia Tech will buy out the remainder of Paul Hewitt’s contract and land Smith.

The Gophers are 17-11 overall and 6-10 in the Big Ten.

Codebrown no offense but I strongly disagree with the two statements you made:

Tubby might tank. There is a very remote chance Tubby would tank anywhere, much less at State.

Yow might make a “bad” hire just so she can set the bar low for him to cover her ass? Another remote scenario using perverse logic. That mindset is very Fowleresque IMO.

I fully agree with BJD95. As a program we cannot afford to miss again. While the upside of other coaches may possibly be higher, we get instant credibility with Tubby (with fans, players & media).

It’s been twenty years since we were a Very Good program and every coach we will (at least should) consider hiring is old enough to remember our winning program through the 80’s. Our sell as a basketball school gets tougher each year we remain irrelevant. If Tubby is a sure thing I say take him over everybody except Billy Donovan and maybe Rick Barnes.

  3. Pacobee 02/28/2011 at 12:17 PM #

    So one option is Tubby…

What about Steve Fisher? Is he someone we should have on a list of potential hires?

  4. triadwolf 02/28/2011 at 12:18 PM #

BTW – Wouldn’t be sweet if we were CHOOSING between coaches like Tubby, Billy D. & Barnes. That would be the ultimate slap in the face for those blowhards in the national media. “Who would want to coach at NC State?” How about “Who do we want to coach and NC State?”

  5. PackInsider 02/28/2011 at 12:26 PM #

The current crop of mid-major coaches is PRECISELY why NC State should be pursuing someone like Tubby Smith. There are literally 1,000 Greg Marshall’s every year. I’m not saying Marshall would or would not succeed at NC State. But every year, there is some mid-major hire that school’s take a chance on, and their AD is either a genius or a goat. It’s such a crap shoot that you’re almost nuts to take a chance on someone like that at a high major Div. 1 school.

Hiring an existing BCS level coach is also something NC State has rarely (if ever) done in basketball. Why not go this route? After Robinson, Sendek & Lowe, I think it’s time to change up how we pursue our next basketball hire. If Tubby were available, it would make so much more sense than taking a huge risk with someone like a Greg Marshall.

At least, that’s how I think Yow should approach it.

“Hot Tubby Time Machine.” Back to the seventies or eighties please!

  7. TomCat 02/28/2011 at 12:32 PM #

I was on search committee. We interviewed Tubby for a head coaching job at another institution in the early 90s when he was associate head coach at Kentucky. He was in the final 2 but didn’t get the job (poltics) but I had him rated number 1 and came away thoroughly impressed with every detail about him. He would be a GREAT hire and Tubby is the TOTAL PACKAGE we have been looking for– for a long time. He has many great years coaching in front of him and we have to focus on what he can accomplish for NC State in a 5-6 year span or more to move this program forward. I would be elated to see Tubby Smith work with these young men. We have a talented roster. These kids would instantly respond to the teaching and improving Tubby brings to the equation and make this a better team.

imo tubby is a very realistic candidate and i would also agree with him as being a top option. that said i’d also love to see donovan in the mix.. he would be my favorite. i think barnes would be great but he’s not leaving. if we’re competing with gt for tubby.. as someone said earlier sh## or get off the pot needs to be underscored and in bolds.. this will be a very quick move for him and i almost think gt has already made the hire. hewi## is a goner already.. we don’t know if lowe is yet though things are pointing to the same.

tubby would instantly restore part of the credibility to the program.. the following season’s results would add to it hopefully and hopefully the ensuing recruiting season would fully restore credibility.

i personally prefer a coach that isn’t too young.. maybe 35-50 that isn’t on his last leg. but don’t exclude tubby!! no no!! he would be able to go head to head with k, roy , gary seth right now.. please excuse me for seth but he’s earned an ounce of my respect.

both tubby and nc state have been almost completely cast aside.. that to me would almost be a perfect fit being we both have something to prove.

this has been an agonizing season to top off a couple of decades of mediocrity!!.. a splashing hire like this would be great for my moral!!

“so for better or worse, I dont really see the relation in tubbys recruiting woes compared to Garys”

I’m simply looking at the outcome and you have noted the cause (i.e. Gary didn’t accept the new AAU paradigm). Regardless of why they have failed to consistently recruit talent commensurate with their coaching skill, they both did.

However I am interested in what you believe are the reason’s for Tubby’s shortfall in recruiting? I simply took it to be a lack of charisma ala Tom O’Brien. Perhaps he simply doesn’t skirt the rules as much as is optimal. Ethics are a bitch.

  10. packof81 02/28/2011 at 12:35 PM #

I hope to hear Tubby is our new coach at the conclusion of the ACC tourney.

  11. JasonP 02/28/2011 at 12:41 PM #

Tubby is a Nike man right? GT is a Nike school. How important are those contracts for coaches that switch schools, especially bball coaches?

tvp1: Just curious, why the preference of Gregg Marshall over Mark Turgeon?

  12. Wolfy__79 02/28/2011 at 12:41 PM #

.. for whatever reason people are thinking tubby cannot recruit? then we could always keep the longest tenured coach in recent history harris around for however long.. he’s got pretty good recruiting ties and would stabalize a change in hc. i don’t think he really adds much to the pot on coaching but certainly has been kept for a reason.

tubby can recruit.. idk what kentuchy is thinking, oh yeah.. they are as greedy as the tarbates! i would love to see tubby wherever he goes to absolutely smear the kenctuchy wildcon’s! recruiting at wherever and wherever including a DATED minnesota cave shouldn’t be compared.. sidney is a great recruiter with no ties coming into his job at nc state?? and we are thinking that a coach that has won a nc at aforementioned stankU can’t recruit??

  13. Wolfy__79 02/28/2011 at 12:46 PM #

^^i would hope a contract with nike(unx) wouldn’t be a potential hurdle for us?? that’s almost as scary as the unx board of guvenators making decisions for nc state…

  14. Pack05 02/28/2011 at 12:55 PM #

With coaches of the caliber of Billy and Tubby looking to possibly move from their current positions we should most definitely be “reaching out” through the proper channels to let either know that we want to bring them here and are looking to make the commitment to compete on the court and in financial package considerations.

Whether we have a chance in hell or not doesn’t matter… we should at least try (via the proper channels, not a Fowler clusterF) and gauge interest

  15. waxhaw 02/28/2011 at 1:16 PM #

I have lost ten minutes of my life reading this thread.

Tubby Smith is a great coach. If you don’t like him because he’s old….fine. If you think he’s on par with Dave Odom then God help you.

  16. WolftownVA81 02/28/2011 at 1:20 PM #

I would be very happy to get a coach of this caliber. He’s got a great resume’ and I think being from the area, he would have an appreciation for what we once were. I also can’t see him being intimidated by the blues. Instant credibility with players, fans and media. I say go for it.

  17. WolftownVA81 02/28/2011 at 1:23 PM #

Debbie should hire Sid as her Executive Assistant (or some such position) to keep him involved with the program until he finds something he’d rather do, and pull the trigger on the Tubby hire if he’s really available.

  18. BJD95 02/28/2011 at 1:42 PM #

Turgeon is also an “A List” name. Marshall is an intreresting B.

  19. tvp1 02/28/2011 at 1:52 PM #

JasonP: I have not looked at Turgeon…I was comparing Marshall with other mid-major coaches.

What I really like about Marshall: (1) He built a program from the absolute ground up at Winthrop; (2) His teams rebound at both ends of the floor like crazy; (3) He has a long track record of success at multiple jobs; (4) He’s at a good age (48) unlike many hot mid-major coaches who are much younger and less experienced.

Just my opinion, except for guys like Tubby who are disgruntled for some reason, I don’t think we have a realistic shot at current high-major coaches.

  20. WULFEN 02/28/2011 at 1:54 PM #

Maybe Tubby could hire Sidney as his recruiting coordinator…

  21. triadwolf 02/28/2011 at 1:59 PM #

I’d like to see a Sunday evening or Monday morning headline next week before the tournament that this is all done. Probably won’t happen until at least the conference tourneys are complete, but If someone like that is on the market the sooner, the better.

I agree that there is probably no reason to leak this now except for Tubby to say: If X University is interested you better move quick because GT is a calling. Tells me that he’s willing to go to GT, but that he has one or more schools higher on his list.

  22. packbackr04 02/28/2011 at 2:07 PM #

^However I am interested in what you believe are the reason’s for Tubby’s shortfall in recruiting?”

Packalum44^ i dont really have a good reason for his recruiting shortcomings. i dont really follow that stuff too closely but i would be interested to see the rankings (overall class #’s) of his classes at Kentucky and then once he got to Minnesota. I would think it is awfully difficult to recruit to Minnesota though.

  23. Mike 02/28/2011 at 2:10 PM #

I have been mixed on Tubby. My complaint is age – at 60, seems like I want someone to be here more than 5-8 years.

However, name recognition is a huge plus. I also believe certain players may decide to stick around for Tubby and may leave for a no-name.

  24. Daily Update 02/28/2011 at 2:17 PM #

I like Tubby, Greenberg, Drew, and Gregg Marshall. Marshall is 48 and has had success at mid-majors. Drew has rocked the Big 12 at a place that should never be good coming off a huge scandal. Greenberg is established with at least 10+ years left in him and IMO has “upside” over Sendek at State. Then Tubby is the ultimate credibility hire.

There are other candidates I like better, but these guys seem like possibilities to me.

My secret dream is Donovan, but I have to admit, I was surprised to see anyone else mention him in this thread. I can’t see it happening… But I can dream. 🙂
