Would be very nice to get a home win today as two out-going coaches do battle.

NC State now has five ACC wins for the season with two games remaining on the schedule. It isn’t what we hoped for when the season kicked off under the mantra of “The Stage is Set”…but, it isn’t the absolute unmitigated disaster it was looking to be the night of the Wisconsin debacle.

Scott Wood’s 20 points helped N.C. State to a 79-74 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday at the RBC Center.
Coming off disappointing losses to Maryland and North Carolina, the Pack got its fifth ACC win of the season but the Yellow Jackets made them earn it.

Every time State (15-13, 5-9 ACC) got hot and stretched out the lead, Georgia Tech answered back. It wasn’t until Wood’s steal and layup with 1:51 left that the Pack could breathe easy.

Tracy Smith added a free throw with 51.9 left to ensure the win, State’s 12th in 13 home games against the Jackets. GT (11-17, 3-11) remains winless on the road this season (0-10) despite 21 points from Iman Shumpert.

State led by 10, 11, 12 and nine at different points in the game but couldn’t put away the Jackets. Shumpert had 15 points in the first 24 minutes then went more than 8 minutes without a field goal attempt and almost 13 minutes between field goals.

State got Smith loose in the post against an over-matched Daniel Miller. Lorenzo Brown added 13 for the Pack.

Brown came out firing for State with three 3s in the first 4 minutes. He hadn’t made more than one 3 in a game this season since the opener on Nov. 12.

Prez, you know what else are “facts”? UNC has beaten us TEN straight times and 16 out of 17. Duke butchered us in both meetings this year, and they are a hell lot better than UNC. I really do not know what game you are watching. Wake up and smell the coffee – your boy is failing miserably.

I honestly cannot believe you are banking your argument on a prospective NIT bid, as if that is some sort of accomplishment. Good gracious, how far the mighty have fallen…

  3. TOB4PREZ 02/26/2011 at 10:25 PM #

I was on here last year (09/10 season) after football season defending TOB, and no one wanted to hear it.

How’d that work out for me?

  4. ms termeaner 02/27/2011 at 12:33 AM #

8th seeds in nit are reserved for lower conference teams that win their leagues but lose their league tourneys. Eitther way I don’t see us making the nit . We just barely beat a team that is 0-10 on the road and has lost their last 8 games.

folks, look at the ACC standings. Gritting out a home win over GT is not cause for optimism.

I hope we beat UVa and FSU. I hope we win as many tourney games as possible, and I hope we win whatever crappy postseason tournament we end up in.

But this team isn’t good, and it’s time for a change. I don’t know who the candidates are, but I’m not too enthused about Tubby.

To whoever said we match up better against Duke than the tarholes because of the inside game – Duke’s bunch of goons (they’ve got like six plumlees now, right?) seems more formidable to me than that zeller goob. Don’t know why with Tracy, Howell, Painter, Leslie, and Vandy, we can’t get in there and rough up zeller and henson. I don’t care how high henson can jump, he weighs 90 pounds, and you could push him clearn into the stands. That’s the one thing I’d like to see out of Lowe before he leaves – one last game against the assholes, where he just runs guys in there to man up, get physical, and beat on them until they can’t stand up. They’re going to get all the whistles anyway, may as well make them earn it. Wishful thinking? Yeah, probably.

    ^That would be beyond awesome.

    TOB4PREZ,

Yeah, defending TOB took a lot of courage. I mean, with his track record, you only had about an 80% chance of being right. The fact that you would even try to use your support for TOB as a comparison to Sidney Lowe and his joke of a program is perplexing. One has shown a substantial level of competence as a head coach at the Div. I level, while the other has been one of the absolute worst college and professional coaches…EVER.

Yeah, sounds like we should put lots of stock in your predictions. Where can I sign?

  8. mak4dpak 02/27/2011 at 9:02 AM #

Apples to Oranges, I would say. TOB had a good track record coming from BC. Not Lowe, then, and not Lowe now. Got to go! A GT win is hardly cause for optimism. Their coach is probably on the chopping block too. Let the search begin, and it probably has. Thanks Debbie for not being a Lowe diehard. If you do your job, you keep your job. That is the standard we all follow in the work force, and Lowe must adhere to that also. His record speaks for itself!

  9. camel77 02/27/2011 at 10:14 AM #

made4pak. Are you saying that if the AD doesn’t fire the coach, she will lose hers.

  10. DT44 02/27/2011 at 10:32 AM #

    WHERE IS PAINTER??????

  11. kyjelly 02/27/2011 at 11:04 AM #

Take a look at BC with a new coach, less talent and none of his recruits? I don’t think one has to wait 8 yrs for a winner.

  12. Rochester 02/27/2011 at 11:57 AM #

It’s funny that some people just don’t understand the first amendment. It means the government can’t stop you from spouting stupid crap in your delusional love for Sidney Lowe. It places no such limitation on a privately operated web site.

  13. swamppack 02/27/2011 at 12:10 PM #

    Available for State b-ball:

    ACC reg. season championship
    ACC tourney championship
    NCAA championship
    NCAA final four
    NCAA elite eight
NIT championship(doesn’t amount to much but we havn’t done even that)

None of this accomplished for 20 yrs.

beating Xarolina(barely a blip on the radar)
    beating Duke(another blip)
    beating anybody that matters(another blip)

Now tell me once more; How much longer should we keep Sid?

  14. choppack1 02/27/2011 at 12:14 PM #

Look, the “heat” on TOB’s seat was understandable. However, in his 2nd year, he went 4-4 in the ACC and last year, he was actually 5-2 vs. the “old” ACC…so he’s cooled his seat off.

OTOH, Lowe hasn’t yet had an ACC regular season conference record which is historically “acceptable.” Lowe is here for a few reasons:
    1) He was a key member of the 1983 Championship squad (so, we are much more forgiving of him than we’d be of another coach w/ a similar record.)
    2) He’s charismatic and a naturally likeable fellow.
    3) He’s the polar opposite of our last coach.
    4) He’s proven himself a good recruiter.

The on the court results of the program under his leadership have taken a clear and decisive step backwards.

And if this year has proven anything – it’s proven that it’s not simply a matter of talent that has kept Lowe from a respectable showing in the ACC.

camel77, Debbie just got hired, and Sid has had 5 years to prove himself, and has failed. I seriously doubt Debbie will retain his services, because she obivously has more balls than Lee Fowlup!

There’s a difference between offending and annoying.

  18. VaWolf82 02/27/2011 at 1:44 PM #

I don’t have any problem with dissenting opinions (even stupid ones that are poorly presented). However, I will always delete posts that include childish name calling…or the ones whining about having their foolishness deleted. For example:

watching you spew your fact free drivel left me wanting…

If anyone wants to have an adult discussion then they are welcome here. Those that can’t follow the few rules that we enforce can either go somewhere else, expect their posts to disappear, or even risk banishment.

  19. swamppack 02/27/2011 at 2:01 PM #

TOB4PREZ, keep posting your opinion on here and don’t let one deletion discourage you. Just count your blessings there’s a sight someone took the time to create like this to be able to interact about our concerns for NCSU athletics. The moderators are a vital part of SFN and seem to be doing a great job. Hey, they didn’t delete your criticism of THEM.

As for your support of Lowe, I stand at odds with you. If I saw Lowe in person today I would shake his hand and thank him for his commitment to NCSU, but he’s not the only one at stake here. There are thousands across the state, country and in foreign countries even that love the university and the b-ball program.

With that being said, HATERS is the wrong pro-noun to use for people objected to keeping Sid. LOVERS of the university would be using a correct pro-noun.

  20. VaWolf82 02/27/2011 at 2:39 PM #

TOB, no one complained about your posts to me. I deleted the ones that included name calling or whining.

If my last post had been directed only at you, I am not bashful and would have called you out by name. If you would like to post here…make your point and hopefully support it with facts. If you disagree, then also support your points with facts that you think were left out.

If you want to post here….great. Then abide by the rules and help keep the conversation above (and I mean well above) TWW standards. Note that this is not open for discussion. Play nice or else.

Forgot one thing. You can also send an e-mail and complain. All of your posts are stored if Jeff or one of the other admins would like to read them.

We gave herb 6 years to make it to the dance, and he had prior college coaching experience…. Sid came with NO college hoops experience and is responsible for bringing 50% of our banners to the RBC… I’d say he’s worthy of (at least) the same treatment his predecessor got.

We all knew there was going to be a LEARNING CURVE with Sidney, and some of us can clearly see the improvement this team is making…. it would be a shame to watch it all go for naught.

  22. TOB4PREZ 02/27/2011 at 3:12 PM #

^^^nevermind that Sid has been “one of us” for over 30 years, while Herb was a complete “stranger to the program”.

    What’s good for the goose…..

TOB4Prez: I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with much of your logic. Specifically:
    – Because HWSNBN was given a 6th year, SL should be too. Sorry but those are apples to oranges comparisons. HWSNBN had the #1 recruiting class in the nation coming in the following season. He took over a total rebuilding job and was a fairly young coach. We also just hired a new AD who was just getting a chance to evaluate the situation first hand. With, we’ve had our “shot in the arm” recruiting class and really haven’t improved. We also have no #1 class coming in next year, have an AD who watched SL from a distance and now for a year up close.

    – I don’t agree with the notion that because SL had no college hoops experience, so he needs more time. If anything that just highlights how bad of a hire that LF made. The man was a head coach for two different teams in the NBA. His record there was eerily similar to his ACC record. There’s nothing in his coaching background that suggests that he’s suddenly going to improve against tough competition. We also see the same gaps right now — poor defense, poor rebounding, baffling substitution patterns and a lack of situation awareness — that I witnessed in his very first game as a coach at NC State. If we were seeing different gaps each year, then maybe I could go with the argument that he was learning things, but what I see are the same patterns again and again regardless of the players. At a certain point, it’s the coaching. The squandering of talent this year leaves any neutral observer to come to that conclusion.

    – I don’t agree that because he was a player for a national title team, he should get 10 years like HWSNBN got. He was a part of that 1983 team and for that, he has his name hanging in the banners as a player. He’s got the all time ACC record for assists to turnovers and a I can almost guarantee that if we could take about 20 years off his age, find some more eligibility and put him on the court, he’d still be the best PG in the league. The problem is that his skills as a player have not translated into being a head coach. It is one thing to be able to do something. It’s another thing to be able to teach it and another thing entirely to run all facets of a high level program. SL will always be a NC State legend for his playing days, but that shouldn’t cloud our judgement about his head coaching abilities. I think he’s probably a very fine assistant, but we didn’t hire him to play that role.

    – Finally, I don’t agree that because SL is “one of us,” he should get different treatment. If anything, this thinking just reinforces to me that one should never hire an alum for a coach. When it comes time for it to end, people just can’t and don’t think rationally and we saw the same thing with Amato. I hope we’ve learned our lesson — alums are great as assistants but are rarely good as the head man. Sports are a results oriented business and the ability of a coach to have a undeniable record makes these results extremely transparent. Based on the results, SL is going to go down as the NC State coach with the lowest winning percentage in the last 50 years. How one can objectively look at that record — and the jarring consistency of just how bad it has been — and argue that he needs more time is beyond me.

I think we can all agree that SL is a nice man who we all loved and appreciated as a player. I think we can all agree that LF took a risk and that it’s not panned out. Fowler got fired (thankfully) in large part for it and now it appears that this experiment is coming to a close.

Onward and upwards. I hope we make a less risky hire next time.

kyjelly. The coach at Boston College is winning with Al Skinner’s recruits. A lot of new coaches come in and win the first year with the previous coach player. Sidney Lowe even won with Sendek’s players. The Boston College players for the most part have been playing together for two or three years now and have good senior leadership which NC State is lacking this year. A new coach that comes in next year probably would have a good record next year, but the question is if he can sustain the momentum in recruiting or two or three years to get his type player in to run his type of system.

All of you out there have to admit, that this team is starting to play better. The experience gain this year and with some good senior leadership( I think CJ Williams will be great senior leader) things should look up next year whoever the coach.
