Because she is not a lazy idiot like Fowler and because she is working hard to improve our athletic department (something Fowler did not do). I would not call it a “love affair,” but after or last 3 ADs (4 if you count Hopfburg — sp?) it is clear that we are glad to have someone who is dealing with our problems and knows what she is doing.

Fowler could not have been a bigger fuckup if he tried.

What is Sid’s ACC record? I am guessing very close to his NBA number. Thanks Lee!

    +1+1+1 Statefan1988:
    Yow is not the answer.
    just the the question.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I currently don’t judge DY by anything she did or did not do at UMd. If it was still the hiring process then that would be fine, but she’s been hired so it’s a moot point as far as I’m concerned.

Since coming to State she’s done a good job. She doesn’t make excuses and so far she seems dedicated and competent. She has embraced the culture at NCSU and she has been more than receptive to the input of the fanbase. She probably benefits from looking better by comparison to her inept predecessor, but so be it.

If she screws the pooch on the upcoming coaching hire, or anything else, I feel confident she’ll be called out on it, but so far she hasn’t done anything for which to be called out.

Agree wufpacker. No haterade for Sid from me. He is a good guy and took on a tough job. However, it was a great opportunity for him in all reality and one he really needed. I wish him nothing but the best but it doesn’t for any reason change the fact he is not working out. We cannot afford these poor results anymore. The program is just out of steam and it shows big time.

Let’s please land a proven coach this time.

I would ask this: What has Debbie Yow NOT done that you wish she would have?

If you say “She should have fired Sid two weeks ago,” then you’re not thinking clearly about what is best long term for the program.

To some of the folks on here it is nothing short of a love affair. They think she is the best thing since the Flobee. I think the jury is out, and will be for the next ten years.

    Statefan1988…you win.
    you beat me to it.
    All Hail Statefan1988.

Mak4dpak – totally agree, he was in the SI list of best coaches in the country several weeks ago. Bennett sounds like just the guy we need, and may even have a shot at.

I think our problem as an AD is not when you suck at everything, over time you become irrelevant. No one clings to the past more than we do. Our fan base for the most part are alumni, we have no broad appeal, an have lost two generations of fans. Mix I some bad luck and a school in Chapel Hill and I simple do not see things any better down the line, no matter who the AD is. People outside of NC think State is the samething as UNC. We are a hair shor of hopeless.

Back to the topic at hand, Leslie, this one’s looking to be the biggest recruiting bust since Damien Wilkins.

    Excuse the typos, fat fingers.

Ive seen more hustle and passion at my local church league on Tuesday mornings. NC State basketball kept me barely interested during the Sendek era. The princeton offense was boring as hell, but atleast they seemed to care. The Lowe era has totally lost me. No leadership.

  15. OldWuf 02/05/2011 at 11:53 PM #

I never really got excited during the CJL recruiting saga. Now my instincts have been proven correct. If basketball was an individual sport or judged on highlight material he might be OK.

    Sid is the greatest.
As we all know our previous AD was an idiot. We haven’t had a non-corrupt/competent chancellor for many years. Our university has been in a leadership vacuum for a while.
Sid bailed us out after Jed screwed everything up, much like Les did years ago after JV was run out of town by the hyper-reactive academics, the N&O and another of our dipstick chancellors, Bruce Poulton. Sid will move on, hopefully with lots of remaining love and admiration from the WP family. We all had a dream that it might work out(and how cool would have that been), now it is obviously not going to. I have faith that our new leadership will do it right this time.

Statefan1998: I get what you’re saying. Because of how starved NCSU fans have been for sustained success, and how bad our AD’s have been recently, especially DY’s immediate predecessor, I think she probably has enjoyed a honeymoon of sorts and benefited by comparison. The love affair you speak of is largely from those factors I think. I agree that the jury is still out and ultimately her success will be judged in the future based on results.

But those results will start with what she does now, and so far she’s pushed all the right buttons. That might not continue, but so far I think she gets high marks since coming to State just for understanding that she has to embrace the situation for what it is.

And you are right that State fans do embrace the past, but that’s only because we have very little to embrace in the present. It’s an uphill climb to get back to respectability, then another uphill climb to get from there to prominence. It won’t be done overnight, and it won’t be easy. But it can be done. Just because it will be a long and difficult trip doesn’t mean it won’t be worth it or that we shouldn’t do it. That, more than anything, is what DY currently represents. Hope for a return to where we once were.

Will it happen? Can’t say. But I think we all owe it to ourselves to not write it off as impossible. Otherwise we’re sunk before we begin.

You’re also correct about people outside of NC not recognizing NCSU more often than not. It’s a constant source of irritation to me, in fact. But in reality, we have to regain respectability locally first, then the rest will follow. Right now we’re little more than a punchline to the joke, locally speaking.

At the risk of asking the question (that should be rhetorical), which is worse? Being the butt of the joke locally, or being irrelevant nationally? Right now we’re pretty much both.

    @ADVENTUROO

What the f**k are you smoking! Sid is the biggest lame duck excuse for a college basketball coach there has ever been. Not only does he not know how to coach, apparently he lacks the skills to motivate or maintain discipline. So I ask you, why in the hell should we believe next year would be any different?

You just keep on going going to the games. By the end of the year, I bet that you will find plenty of cheat seats at half-court.

My prediction is that this train wreck reaches epic proportions before the end of the year. I seriously doubt that we will win another game.

dont know how this would translate into the mens game…but throwing geno auriemma into the pot sounds enticing

Again for you guys looking for that sleeper, mid-major coach, check out Randy Bennett, his record at St. Mary’s speaks for itself. His team presently leads the WCC. And after watching them play on televison, they are clearly a fundamentally sound team at both ends of the court. Something we are lacking. Would be a step up for him, and I believe he could accept the challenge of the ACC, and our neigbboring rivals. He surely would be a good deal, and a good fit to a floundering BB program.

  20. Wufpacker 02/06/2011 at 6:56 AM #

I had forgotten about Bennett. I remember watching part of one of their games last year in the tournament. They were a Sweet 16 team last year IIRC. I remember being impressed with their play and wishing I could see us look that much like a team at some point.

  21. Wufpacker 02/06/2011 at 7:14 AM #

    OK, I’m sold.

After just doing a little research to (re)familiarize and (re)edumacate myself re: Mr. Randy Bennett of St. Mary’s, I have to say I’m impressed (again).

Nine seasons at St. Mary’s, four 25+ wins seasons including past three, only losing season was first season (9-20). Broke even (15-15) second season. Three NCAA tourney appearances (not bad for a WCC team). NCAA Sweet Sixteen last year. NIT final eight two years ago.

Current season is his 10th and they are 20-4 (8-1), 1st place WCC, including road wins @Texas Tech, @Miss. St and @Gonzaga. Likely will result in a 4th consecutive 25+ win season with post season appearance (likely NCAA Tournament) already assured.

Also, St. Mary’s is currently ranked 12th in the country offensively (pts/game).

He seems to be able to be able to take a program that’s down and bring it back to respectability quickly. Then elevate it to the NEXT LEVEL and SUSTAIN IT. (That was the big missing factor with HWSNBN…he got us back to respectability, then….he had only been at Miami, OH for three years when we hired him….Bennett has been at St. Mary’s for ten).

Presuming we can’t land a “big fish”, I say sign Bennett to a 3 or 4 year deal and give him a shot. Heck, I might even choose him over any “big fish” I can think of that might be available.

Just a thought, Coach K is how old? Roy is how old? Who will replace them? Take these two out of the recruiting equation and the basketball world looks very different in the triangle and the ACC. We have an opportunity set the course for the next years. Offer Sidney Lowe a position in the athletic department and start the evaluation process now to set course for future.

  23. Statefan1998 02/06/2011 at 8:06 AM #

I like the St. Mary coach. He always seems to have a good team.
