Put this entry in the “misery loves company” category. It has obvioiusly been a tough season in Raleigh, but we wanted to shift the focus to our friends from Wake Forest who are having an even more miserable season in the 1st year of the Jeff Bzdelik experiment.
I wanted to make sure that ACC fans didn’t miss out on a rare opportunity tonight at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. You can read about “the game”(i.e. the Duke/UNC game for all non-Duke/UNC fans and non-ESPN employees who may not know what I was referring too) everywhere else.
The down year the ACC is having in basketball has made attendance an issue for a lot of ACC teams this year especially at Wake Forest whose fans support their program as well as any in the conference:
Wake and Joel Coliseum officials acknowledge a decrease of more than 6,000 fans per game compared to 2006. The decline is ongoing; Jeff Bzdelik’s feckless flock, seemingly destined for the ACC cellar, plays before crowds that average 59 percent of capacity. “Throw the hate on me, not these young men,†Bzdelik proclaimed after an encouragingly competitive 24-point defeat by the Blue Devils. Encountered in a Joel corridor prior to the game, a Wake fan was eager to oblige the new coach, minus the extreme choice of words. “If I could separate my booing, and not boo the players but boo Bzdelik, I would,†said the supporter of 40 years.
We know the feeling all too well in Raleigh.
In an effort to drive attendance for tonight’s game against Miami, Wake Forest lined up some half-time entertainment and sent the following marketing campaign to members of the Deacon Club:
Yes, the Piano Juggler.
I can only imagine what Lee Fowler would have lined up to top WF athletic director Ron Wellman if he were still in his office at Lake Gaston NC State.
