11-1 or 12-0. We might lose at FSU.

That could be a brutal home stretch. I’m not so sure the football gods are being all that kind to us. Even if we start 6-0 or 5-1 (neither of which is a gimme) before the bye week, it is not doing much to prepare us for the last 4 games. I don’t like so many no names on the OOC schedule. We should at least have one more BCS opponent or strong mid-major in there. Maybe Central Michigan will be that. I also think we should do like a lot of the SEC teams do and reserve one of those OOC games for towards the end of the year – a game to make adjustments, get some rest for the starters, etc., before the final couple of games. Finally, from a fan’s standpoint, some of these games don’t do much for me. Yes, the tailgating is always good. But I like a good game too, preferably a win against a quality opponent that gets us votes in the polls.

First six games: Pretty much PIE.

    Second six games: Brutal!

During that stretch, the easiest opponent (Virginia) is a road game.

Sure hope TOB will earn his paycheck this year!

Wow!!! We better have 10 wins with such a weak schedule next year. Non-conference looks the weakest I’ve seen in several years and the Conference games look to be a favorable schedule too. I just wish State can play some top schools out of conference. I think one cup cake a year is enough. Meaning only one fcs school and at the most only one non bcs school to go with that. It should be a requirement that we play 2 of our non-conference games against BCS opponents. Playing more than one FCS school doesnt do anything for our program either. With that said, just beat them all by 30!!!

    Go Pack!!!!

You forgot the ACC Championship Game on Saturday Dec. 3, 2011. Not sure when the Orange Bowl or National Championship games are, but you should add one of those too!

    Go Pack!!!

Starting out Glennon with some cupcakes is important. Moreover, all of our hard games come at the end of the season. Again, I am solely thinking of Glennon here. Our season hinges on him. If my insight holds true, he will be one hell of a QB. Don’t want him playing South Carolina right off the bat though. He gets 3 cupcakes and 3 winnable BCS games and could start out his career 6-0. That would be huge for his confidence as we would then face FSU, easily the hardest game of the year.

If you flop this schedule, I’d already hold up the white WTNY flag. I live out of NC so don’t care so much about the crappy games but understand the frustration there.

I couldn’t have scripted the schedule better (except playing at FSU). Our two easiest league games are on the road (Virginia and Wake). I hate wasting home field advantage on a team we should beat anywhere. The final road ACC game is at the least hostile environment (BC). That’s also the ONLY road game in our last four.

Basically, if we can make it to November controlling our on destiny, then I really, REALLY like our chances.

Our OL should be healthy and cohesive by the time our schedules heats up. Perfect.

Cincy is on a short week, but it’s a non-conference game with no bearing on the Atlantic Division race. So I really don’t care.

  9. tjfoose1 02/14/2011 at 8:45 PM #

    One game at a time.

  10. eas 02/14/2011 at 8:50 PM #

I do wish we had one top 25 team in that OCC schedule to balance out the cupcakes. However, the schedule as a whole could provide a strong showing. Especially with a new QB.

    Prolly not a bad thing

  11. UpstateSCWolfpack 02/14/2011 at 8:51 PM #

At least 3 of the last 4 are at home instead of 1 of the last four like last season.

  12. mak4dpak 02/14/2011 at 9:51 PM #

I agree it may be an advantage to Glennon gaining some experience early, but for the fans these cupcakes don’t offer much enthusiasm for attending the games, and certainly don’t catch the national spotlight. One cupcake team is okay, but the rest needs to change in the coming years. We have got to learn to challenge the big boys if we want to get anywhere. Just a note to say, no article on the BB teams win over WF. Shows the sad state of affairs our BB program is in. And no it didn’t thrill me either, being it was a team worse than us.

  13. mak4dpak 02/14/2011 at 10:01 PM #

I thought I would check out next years schedule, and looks much more impressive, with Tennessee, Conneticut, South Alabama.

  14. wolfpack15 02/14/2011 at 10:26 PM #

Ok, yes the ooc schedule is weak. yes i understand as a fan we would like to see better teams play. BUT, lets look at this from a positive. We are coming off a great year. Let’s get Glennon some wins and build his confidence with a weaker start to a schedule next year. It’s important that we put together another 9 or 10 win season so we can start getting use to setting the bar there. If we capitalize on this schedule this coming year that might just be what we need to start setting high standards for our program and showing 2 seasons back to back with 9 to 10 wins will help in recuriting. As mak4dpak shows above there is a better ooc schedule coming. Let’s crawl before we walk. Bright things are coming!

You all are extremely optimistic. How many times have I heard the preseason prognosticators over the past few years state, ‘next season I see us going to a major bowl…10-2 season… ACC Championship…blah blah blah’ . I refuse to get my hopes up again this year. I wish the team well, but as far as predicting an outstanding season, I will not do it.

  16. Wolfy__79 02/14/2011 at 11:29 PM #

i LOVE this schedule. ooc is big but who are we kidding, we aren’t contending for a nc this year… but we are competing with fsu right now for the acc championship game. fsu will no doubt be there at the end.. i think we have more confidence in our qb scenario than most any other acc school. please beat md! they make my skin crawl.

…as bjd95 said. PERFECT. we take care of business in acc play and we are there.. easier said than done for NC STATE, but this is the most favorable acc schedule i’ve seen since TOB has been here.

i would love to see dana incorporate more/any power formations in our offense.. i still don’t know why we haven’t done so yet??

losing nate is certainly a loss.. but i expect the defense to be the signature of this team this year.. heck, maybe we can even punt the ball for more than 10 yards an attempt. terrell manning is nate+1 before he got injured.. he will be great as always against the run and improved against the pass!! can’t wait……..

^^^^^^it’s not sad at all… the schedule was released today and most state fans have been waiting to see and comment. yes our bball is SAD, but it’s not the reason why we discuss the football schedule 🙂

  17. Wolfy__79 02/14/2011 at 11:31 PM #

aren’t we starting the 2012 season against tennessee?? 2011 is all about finishing strong with a bowl win and 2012 is OUR YEAR 🙂

  18. Wolfy__79 02/14/2011 at 11:45 PM #

    Plz2BStateFan… nice link!

^^^this year is a bit different and there are some numbers we can draw upon to feel more confident in actually cashing in on our high hopes. per TOB’s record, around this time is where you see things starting to work. with that, we have the most promising running back we’ve had since toney baker pre injury. mike archer and tenuta seem to be comfortable with their roles under tob’s defensive mindset (suprises me tenuta isn’t the dc, but!), glennon is highly touted and is coached by the best system for him to be good in college and at ncst. the offensive line is i think almost all upperclassmen now, and they did a pretty solid job last year… only to improve. a flock of red shirts are coming of age and mature ncaa level!! there’s just too much to make this like two years ago!! then we had a team struggling to implement the zone defense and a pieced together running game..

    should be very good!!!

I agree that I am excited for none of the OCC games. But from Tom’s perspective, he has to be happy. Don’t forget Tom had some issues with the schedule this past year, specifically playing 3 of the last 4 games away and having Thursday game in Florida.

You also have to look at Tom’s incentive clauses to understand the cupcakes. I’m fairly certain he gets bonuses for finishing ranked top 25. Lot easier when you have wins as opposed to the tough OCC we had this past year but no marquee names on it. That loss to ECU dropped us 5 or so spots in the rankings.

Tom is from Cincinnati and he is trying his darnedest to gain a recruiting footprint in that area. There is strategy to that particular game, just as St Johns is for Duke basketball.

But most importantly Glennon could not have asked for anything better. One game at a time as coach TJ says, but I’m not a coach and my mind is running wild with the possibilities of a special season.

  20. Astral Rain 02/15/2011 at 6:02 AM #

9-4, ranked finish (Even if #25) means your program is at least somewhat relevant.

I’d say in terms of ACC relevance, we’re third behind VT and FSU right now.

Now, I won’t be shocked to see a regression to 7-8 wins this year, but hoping for more. If Glennon can be as good as Wilson, 9 wins should be expected with this schedule.

2 I-AA opponents don’t matter as much when you can pencil in 7-8 wins every year. It does when you’re in the 6-7 range.

  21. BJD95 02/15/2011 at 8:57 AM #

Please don’t confuse “plausible paths to great success” with predicting that the best case scenario WILL happen. But this schedule provides optimum opportunity for any configuration where we play FSU on the road. Although it’s certainly not LIKELY, there’s certainly a plausible path to the Atlantic title if we lose in Tallahassee, but win out at home and take care of business (at least 2 of 3) on our easier road trips (WF, UVA, BC). We should be slight favorites in all three (meaning that mathematically, we likely go 2-1). Although after looking at the Noles’ schedule, it’s hard to see them do worse than 6-2 (no VT or UNC for them).

However, if we somehow find a way to win in Tallahassee (second game after the bye, which sets up pretty nicely), then we will REALLY be in the drivers’ seat. That’s an exciting setup, with a very good shot at the Peach even if we fall short. But 2012 was always going to be our best shot, it’s a great bonus that we also have a realistic shot in 2011, based on the schedule layout. For we don’t want all of our eggs in one basket.

  22. Wolfy__79 02/15/2011 at 11:58 AM #

….speaking of nate irving earlier.. i saw this morning where mel kiper has him rated as the #2 inside linebacker.. i’m pretty happy with that, i didn’t think he’d get much love from the draft analysts..

my question is how will mike glennon compare to his brother? sean never impressed me while at vtech… but i also feel we have done a better job with our qb’s development since the rivers era, despite two different coaching regimes!! shouldn’t he feel the urgency to compete since being sidelined behind russell for so long??

  23. NCSU84 02/15/2011 at 12:08 PM #

Yes BJD95, you are right. Anything regarding wins/loses is plausible in sports (I rest my case).

  24. Mike 02/15/2011 at 12:11 PM #

I am not a fan of cupcakes, but I truly believe right now they are good for our program. They help us confidence wise this year. They help to start a foundation where we can expect 9-10 wins per year. And who does not appreciate all the cupcakes in Chapel Hill?

I look at the schedule and I see 7-0 as a distinct possibility.
    Liberty – W
@ Wake – W – We always struggle in WS but not sure WF will be back
S Ala – W – but this could be the “what” game but being at home I think we will prevail. On the road it could be a different story
@ Cinci – W – yes on the road and yes Cinci will be ready to avenge 2010 but I think we will be ready and play well on short week Thurs

GT – W – home is good against the Wreck, and Nesbitt will be gone. I think our D will be able to stuff them again.
Cent Mich – W – Home game but watch out for the MAC, those guys always play the big names tough.
@ VA – W- VA has been down the last few years but is always tough at home. If we are 6-0, I think momentum takes us to 7-0. If we are 5-1 we may struggle in this one.
@ FSU – L – I hate to say it, but they will be ready and I see a beatdown
    UNX – W – 5-0
@ BC – L – we always play poorly in Boston
Clempsin – W – Step on some Tiger tail
MD – W – we will be ready this year.

So I see only 2 L’s BUT both are in conference and in division. I also truly expect we will lay an egg in the first 6 and will be 5-1 in the bye week.

It can only be thought of as good news that Jon Tenuta is staying with the program. He is one of the best minds in defensive football at any level and his mark on the program last year was more than apparent.
