vs. Duke Live Blog

#4 Duke (16-1, 3-1) at State (11-6, 1-2)
7pm ESPN

For those of you that can’t — or more likely, choose not to — watch, you can check in here throughout the game for updates and random comments. I’ll try to get through the entire game, but no promises.

You can also check out the game thread, or a variety of other topics, on the SFN Forums.

We’ve won three of the last six in Raleigh, so this is a rivalry again. Mike Patrick says so.

Announcers: Mike Patrick and Jay Bilas

Starters
Duke: Smith, Dawkins, Kelly, Singler, Mason Plumless
State: Javi, Brown, Smith, Wood, Leslie

Patrick: “The RBC Center still filling up.” Although no one is making their way down any of the aisles. (Seriously, there aren’t 10,000 people there.)

1st Half
“We will win the ACC and be ranked in the Top 5 before it’s all over” (CJL)…better or worse than Gavin’s comment a few years ago?

15:01 – Duke 11-3. Business as usual. State 1-of-9 FG (11%). Hard to believe, huh.

Apparently Maryland laid the blueprint for beating Duke, and Lowe put the team through two tough days of practice. Now we can rest easy, it’s all under control.

11:32 – Duke 13-12. State on a 9-2 run over the previous 4:10, even after 4:17 scoring drought during which Duke missed four shots and two free throws. Baskets by Smith and Wood cut the lead to one into the TV timeout. State shooting 4-of-19 (21%) FG.

So far, Duke has four blocks and is dominating the boards 16-4, but Duke’s six turnovers have been the equalizer.

9:17 – Duke 27-16. Devils responded with a 14-4 run of their own, mainly by penetrating with ease and taking advantage of State’s sloppy play all around.

7:01 – Duke 32-22. Another field goal drought, 3:23 this time. That makes 7:40 of the 12:59 played during which State has not scored a field goal. 7-of-9 FTs keeping us in it.

I hear circus music.

We have an nearly an entire generation of students that have no idea how raucus this game would have been in Reynolds…win or lose. I never saw us beat Duke or Carolina in Reynolds; in fact, only saw us beat either of them — Carolina in ’98 — once during my entire time at State.

3:54 – Duke 37-26. This is one of those games where it looks like we’re hanging around, but only until Duke starts hitting its perimeter shots. We’re not losing for lack of effort tonight. We’d be winning if we were playing Cincinatti.

We have to be smart on offense or this will get away from us in a hurry. Great analysis, Jay Bilas. Being smart isn’t exactly out trademark.

Half – All Duke, 42-28. Nolan Smith leads all scorers with 10, while the only Dukie that didn’t score in the first half was Wojo. Tracy leads State with eight points, but as a team, State shot only 8-of-37 (22%) versus Duke’s 15-of-30 (50%), while hitting only 3-of-12 3PT, so it could’ve been worse. Duke also has seven blocks.

2nd Half
I wish I hadn’t comitted myself to this now, but that’s my fault, not yours, so I’ll press on. It’ll be over soon.

Maybe it’s because I’m old (31), but what’s with the straight-bill ball caps the kids wear nowadays? Is that the trend like the paying a premium for “worn” Abercrombie hats when I was a freshman?

Leslie 0-6, Brown 0-6, Harrow 0-5.

18:12 – Duke 44-35. State opens the half on a 7-2 run.

14:48 – Duke 52-46. So far this half, State has executed a similar gameplan to last year’s win over Duke, scoring in the paint and crashing the boards. State cut the lead to five around the 16:10 mark. Seth Curry is on the bench with four fouls. Wood has six points in the half and the Pack is showing a lot of intensity, which is refreshing.

10:58 – Duke 63-50. Well, hope y’all enjoyed that mini-run, because Duke countered with a 11-4 run of its own. State has cut the lead to five twice now, and is making it hard for Duke to score in the paint, contesting every basket, but Duke took advantage of a couple lazy and sloppy possessions to push the lead back to 13. Dawkins (3), Singler (3), and Curry (4) are all in foul trouble.

Does anyone actually watch the NBA?

7:27 – Duke 70-56. We’re shooting 31% but leading by eight at the free throw line. CJL and Wood have both come on strong in the half, with 13 and 12, respectively. We’re actually not playing too bad; with a little better shot selection, this is a close game.

Looks like a decent crowd, late arrivers — maybe 15,000?

5:06 – Duke 77-66. This has been a very physical game, and State has held its own, but just hasn’t managed that much-needed extended run after cutting the lead to five earlier.

3:56 – Duke 82-70. This one is over, but it’s the most fight I’ve seen all season, so I’m going to see it through. It’s weird how that works; Florida State only beat us by 13, but it was never that close; this one is 12, and feels much closer. Miles Plumlee has 13, just one off his career-high. Insert joke here.

Bilas says only dogs can hear Harrow’s voice, it’s so deep. Isn’t it the other way around?

Final – Duke 92-78 (ESPN.com Box Score). It took 30 mins, but State finally started trading baskets with Duke, but it was just too late. I really want to be pissed about this one, but after a rough beginning, it actually went about as well as we could realistically expect.

If you got this far, then you’ve probably got the stomach to peruse a variety of topics on the SFN Forums.

Here is a quote from Lowe following the game:

“There’s still a lot of games left,” said N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe. “But we need a run. We need a nice run. It’s not a panic situation. But too many of those [losses], yeah, it will be.”

Haha, glad that, after 5 years, Sid has actually learned something.

Look, in year 5, this is shaping up to be just like the previous. Take a look at the ACC standings and you’ll begin to see the separation between the decent teams and the horrid. We’re already in our rightful 10-spot. If we beat Miami, we move up to #9! Well at least we have something to play for.

We are as bad as we’ve been in the past. The freshmen, as a group, have not impressed me. They’ve been good in spurts individually, but as a group they have not increased the level of the team’s play. The basketball IQ is lacking overall, and that is a direct reflection of their coach. The difference in the knowledge quotient on the benches between Duke and NCSU was astounding. Every move Coach K made, was made with a purpose. It’s like it is just improv for Sid. He doesn’t seem to know what the hell is going on, just throws crap out and hope it sticks.

Above all, if this team wants ANY chance, it must learn how to defend. You can’t even beat the multitude of crappy teams in this conference if you do not defend.

The way I see it, the ACC will get 4 bids. Right now that’s Duke, FSU, BC and maybe UNC. We’re not even in the discussion. We’ve managed to play 18 games and have beaten no one. Time is quickly running out.

whope90: Sorry, but that’s absolutely the worst coaching list that I’ve seen put together. Gillispie is a drunk who was obviously in way over his head and got fired. The other three are totally unproven assistants.

As for the game itself, it was more of the same under SL — no defense, mental lapses, out rebounded, rough zone offense and some questionable shot selection. We had some fantastic individual plays, saw some promising things and played spectacular in some stretches. In the end it wasn’t enough though, in what was a very, very winnable home game.

I’d like to call out Harrow’s play last night. That’s the best I’ve personally seen a freshman PG play against Duke. The kid is going to be special. Lowe just needs to let him play.

As for SL, this is just one of the nails in his coffin. That was a winnable game and a must win game and we didn’t get it. Given we’re losing @ Duke and @ UNC and already have 3 losses in league, our margin of error is razor thin. It’s not looking good.

Did anybody wonder what the results would have been against Duke, if we had a Coach K, and Duke had a Sid, with the players that played. Different results. Isn’t 5 years enough, and we haven’t even played UNX???????????????????

  4. lsutton5144 01/20/2011 at 8:31 AM #

Can someone explain how the kids are supposed to pay attention on offense or defense when Sid is constantly standing on the sidelines doing that damn whistle that he does trying to get their attention? On defense, if you look over at him, your man gets by you. On offense, they take the ball away from you. No wonder no other coach in the country does this.

  5. Rochester 01/20/2011 at 8:54 AM #

After Wake Forest’s latest raping (lost by 35 last night at GT), their average margin of loss is 26 points. Kind of makes our 21 point win over them look a little less impressive. So we have three losses by an average of 10 points and one win over a team that loses every game by an average of four touchdowns. As much as I enjoyed a few individual moments last night (Leslie’s one-handed putback slam, etc.), I can’t say I’m real thrilled with the state of the program right now.

If Sid somehow saves his job there must be a hell of a winning streak about to start soon, because barring that his time is over.

  6. eas 01/20/2011 at 9:02 AM #

I hate the whistle. One time on defense I heard it 5 times on one Duke possession.

  7. Pack Mentality 01/20/2011 at 9:09 AM #

There is absolutely no reason to accept a loss to any team for any reason. There is no such thing as a moral victory when you are in our position. Maybe if you have a history of consistently winning some games against good teams. But not us, you either win or lose, no middle ground.

Just wait til next year y’all. Our freshmen will be much more mature and the recruiting class is great.

If there is anybody who takes some positives from a home 14 point loss, please let me take a hit off whatever you’re smoking.

  8. EdMar 01/20/2011 at 9:15 AM #

Don’t look now but we are in 11th place(thanks Wake)!

It is amazing, we have a lot more talent, the league is way down but the results are the same. What could that be?

  9. Pack Mentality 01/20/2011 at 9:27 AM #

“Don’t look now but we are in 11th place(thanks Wake)!”

And Duke is in first. The more things change….

  10. 61Packer 01/20/2011 at 11:58 AM #

“There’s still a lot of games left, but we need a run. We need a nice run. It’s not a panic situation”, quoteth El Cid.

With 8 in a row so far vs UNC, plus the regurgitation Pack fans are getting from this endless buffet of dreadful Wolfpack performances, we don’t need any more runs, thank you.

  11. Rick 01/20/2011 at 12:13 PM #

“It is beyond depressing to hear multiple people talk about being “proud” of our basketball team – in their coach’s FIFTH SEASON – for playing hard on ONE END of the court for ONE HALF of the game.”

We might as well enter a basketball league where they do not keep score.

  12. wolfman1959 01/20/2011 at 12:30 PM #

    Sidneys post game comments :

” It was, again we’re going to reward the guys that are getting it done. We’re going to reward the guys that are doing what I want them to do and are capable of doing what I want them to do and that’s what we did. Now we have to really look at our team going forward. I’ve got to make some decisions”……………..

.BRILLIANT !!! It took how many games into the season to figure this out ??I have pleaded for him to put his best talent on the floor and let them play from the beginning of the season….still can NOT figure why Vandenburg made a random 30 second appearance on the floor last night, only to pull his signature move of getting caught WAY out of position , only to let his man drive to the basket for the easy layup ….he does not understand basketball…..period……he should stick to boomerangs….

Overall, not a bad or embarassing effort . Most emotion out of Richard Howell in his time as a Wolfpacker…glad to see that….But defensive lapses that continue to occur will cost you EVERY time against a talented WELL COACHED team like Duke…….

  13. wolfman1959 01/20/2011 at 12:38 PM #

Seriously…if I have to start on that absolutely ridiculous, annoying whistling and hand waving that he does from the bench…I think I will lose it…it is a distraction to EVERYONE in the arena, MOST of all, HIS PLAYERS !!!!!!!! It accomplishes absolutely nothing other than a disruption in whatever flow we may have going….ABSURD..

  14. wolfman1959 01/20/2011 at 12:44 PM #

Coack K, like most coaches simply gives one hand signal to his point guard as he takes the ball inbounds and his players take it from there…thay KNOW what to do from PRACTICE….by the way , can anyone confirm whether we actually ever practice or have shoot arounds in the RBC at any time other than game day ? I am well aware that we share the arena with the Canes, but we certainly do not seem to shoot well in the RBC until the second half… last night first half 21% from the floor….just an observation…

  15. JeremyH 01/20/2011 at 12:49 PM #

If they do not hold all their practices at the RBC, we should not play there! There are probably several factors as to why the home court advantage is lessened in the RBC. For one, Ryan Harrow mentioned that he was cold in the RBC. Another is that the players must travel to the center via automobile, versus trotting over there from the dorms.

  16. eas 01/20/2011 at 1:08 PM #

The only way we will ever be lucky enough to be on campus again is if a really big name coach agrees to a contract based on these conditions. We shot ourselves in the foot with the generic RBC. Really never a
home court advantage. Atmosphere is horrible there.

It will never end or improve

  17. Wolfy__79 01/20/2011 at 1:21 PM #

nc state bball =’s highlight reel! so far 1 of 4 is in our favor in acc play. count the big four ooc’s, 1 of 8 🙂 TIME TO MOVE ON!

is this serious talk or serious speculation about getting back on campus!? that would be great!

  18. PoppaJohn 01/20/2011 at 1:27 PM #

    Okay, let’s do the math.

At this point, we are 1-3 in the conference (11-7 overall) coming off a 0-3 stretch. Now we have UM, CU, UNC, VATech & Duke again.

I see that as a 2-0 stretch, followed by another 0-3 stretch leaving us at 3-6, 13-10 with 7 left to go.

We’ll likely lose to UNC, Tech, Maryland and FSU leaving us at 6-10, 16-14 going into the ACCT.

Let’s say Sid goes on a heroic ‘last stand’ and wins two, leaving us at 18-15.

    We’re an NIT bubble team.

  19. eas 01/20/2011 at 1:45 PM #

I think an on campus option is a pipe dream for all of us. Unfortunately all those “empty” corporate seats keep the bills paid. For those who remember, Reynolds had a wonderful atmosphere and was always loud. It was a great atmosphere when we sucked and when were good. It is so sad the Dean Dome has so much more fan enthusiasm than the RBC but it works because UNX has been good for a longtime. It also works because of its proximity to campus. A shared hockey facility will always be a shared hockey facility. A great engineering school can certainly figure out how to expand/renovate Reynolds to still hold corporate money and keep the small feel. Nobody is screaming Cameron is too small and money flows just fine.

  20. swamppack 01/20/2011 at 1:47 PM #

It is good to remember the past to keep the right perspective today. I hate Sid’s coaching but I will never forget what he did for us during his playing days. Secondly, I love this assembly of college-level talent we have this year and my excitement about them is only magnified when I remember the lack of talent over the past 20 years. Did Sid assemble them? Yes. Can he coach them to be winners on the court? No. Let,s get these kids a game coach they deserve and offer Sid out of respect for his past(’83 championship) and present(recruiting, etc.)contributions another job. If he is not removed from this sunken ship that is NCSU basketball, the ship will just continue to disintegrate in the bottom of the ACC basketball ocean

  21. heavy 01/20/2011 at 2:04 PM #

I understand the respect for Sid for what he did about 30 years ago but I do not share the same sentiment. Fast forward to five or so years ago, he was on the search committee. As such, he has some blame in this. (Yes, Fowler has the most). But given the ineptness of the search, we didn’t put him in this position, he did it himself (with lots of ‘help’ (of the negative variety) from Fowler. My ‘I feel sorry for Sid’ gauge went on empty 2 years ago.

  22. Tau837 01/20/2011 at 2:04 PM #

    From another board:

“The worst blown call of the game, by far, and easily one of the worst blown calls I’ve ever seen, was a State defender literally yanking down Singlers’ non-shooting arm (and his entire body along with it) as Singler beat him off the dribble for a layup. Singler made the bucket as he stumbled to the floor. It was so obvious and violent that I thought there could be an intentional foul- instead there was no call at all. After seeing that play, it’s hard to argue that Duke was getting the benefit of the doubt from the refs last night.

I’ve watched thousands of hours of college basketball, and this was easily among the worst blown calls I’ve ever seen.”

Now, I do not have access to the replay, but as I recall, Wood tried to grab Singler around the waist to stop his progress to the basket, similar to when he got called for an intentional foul by wrapping up a guy at midcourt a couple games ago. This time as I recall he didn’t really affect Singler, who made the layup and ran back downcourt. Am I remembering this right? Anyone have a video of it?

I’m thinking that to call it “violent” is way off base.

  23. wolfman1959 01/20/2011 at 2:11 PM #

Nicely said Swamppack, but as Heavy stated my “Sid Guage”…which started the season with a full tank…..is now EMPTY !

  24. swamppack 01/20/2011 at 2:17 PM #

Heavy, thanks for an objective point of view. Also thanks for remembering the past(30 yrs. and 5 yrs. ago). Both recollections will be valuable to anyone who cares about the future of State b-ball.

  25. heavy 01/20/2011 at 4:12 PM #

Thanks Swamppack & Wolfman. I’ve been pretty rough on Sid with some of my posts in other threads. Some of it I feel is still justified given the events of the past 5 years, but I’ve tried to tone down the rhetoric out of repect for fans who did get to enjoy 1983. With that said, Debbie, please do what is right for this program.
