TOB to lose assistant to head coaching gig?

One of the hallmark’s of Coach O’Brien’s coaching philosophy is the continuity and longevity of his assistant coaching staff.

Unfortunately for NC State, it appears that we’ll be losing one of our best assistants to vacancy at Elon – running backs coach, Jason Swepson.

Stability on the staff is a positive, but I certainly do not see this loss as a negative. Swepson is not leaving for a lateral position elsewhere – he is taking a step forward in his career. Good luck to him and best wishes!

According to Packpride, TOB has had 21 assistants work for him. 7 have moved on to be head coaches. That seems like a lot.

The link to that article is accessible in the link provided in the entry above

7 Head Coaches from 21 assistants has got to be some kind of record. That is astronomical.

I think Butch Davis is approaching 21 assistants in just his 4 years at Carolina.

Amato had to be getting close to 21 assistants in his 7 years at State.

I know a great Defensive Coordinator I’d love to unload on him when he leaves.

I’d like us to get a assistant that can recruit players. He might be a great coach(not that our running game has been that great the last few years, but that is probably the OL), but we have basically no recruiting class this year. We MUST get much better classes over the next few years or we are is very bad shape

I’d have to guess the odds on favorite would be Andre Powell recently of Clemson. O’Brien has a history of hiring people he knows, and they should have some history from Virginia. Other positives is that have has coached special teams, something we could maybe use a little more help in, and can recruit some. Plus, in this day and age (just check the NFL’s hiring policy) it is a positive to have a racially diverse staff.

That’s the beauty of having a good head coach. You can trust that he will hire a good replacement whenever an assistant moves up the ladder at another program.

    Best of luck, Coach.

to me it is all positive when former assistants move up in the ranks. look to the coaching connections in the nfl and where some of these coaches started. gives alot of credibility to TOB being a good ceo of a program!

keep tenuta. ready for archer to take his head coaching gig wherever 🙂

Congrats to Coach Swepson and Good Luck at Elon!

I think Powell would be a good hire at that position. He’s worked with some great RBs at Clemson and is pretty good in the recruiting area, from what I’ve heard.

I believe it was pointed out on this site earlier this year that O’Brien’s Coaching Tree makes up 1/4-1/3 of the ACC head coaches. I’d be interested to see what the percentage of Assistant Coaches and Coordinators come from O’Brien as well.

Yep, WRAL has the story up, too.

Wonder if we’ll find Elon on our non-conference schedule in the coming years, since their coach has State ties.

Archer has already had a head coaching gig at LSU. Maybe they will want him back if Miles goes to Michigan.

    Congrats to Coach Swepson!

We should all keep an eye on him as should Debbie Yow. Should Swepson be successful at Elon, I’d imagine he would be someone we would look at to replace TOB. We’ve had success in the past with getting successful FCS coaches (Sheridan and Holtz).
