Lowe’s Love of Leslie Leads to Loss

State loses 60-50 in LittleJohn Coliseum tonight after a pitiful and embarrassing performance. After leading by 19 points, 31-12, with 6:10 remaining in the first half (and 34-29 at the half), Clemson outscored State 48-19 the rest of the game.

How ugly was it? Well, it was apparently the largest comeback in Clemson’s history.

How did it happen? Well, State had field goal droughts of 4:08, 6:03, 5:30 and then watched as Clemson ended the game on a 17-2 run over the final 7:59, with State’s final points of the game at the 2:20 mark. State had a total of 16 points in the second half, with six of them in the first three minutes of the half off Scott Wood three pointers.

State falls to 2-4 in conference play with a trip to Chapel Hill looming.

It took new Clemson Head Coach, Brad Brownell, all of a half of a year to take the lead over Coach Lowe. I don’t know a soul in college basketball who would/could argue that Clemson has more talent than NC State. So, spotting a team with more talent a 19 point lead equates to a COLOSSAL implosion.

This one is basically the point of no return for the Wolfpack Basketball program under Coach Sidney Lowe. Based on the weakness of our schedule and the lack of quality of our losses, the Wolfpack projects to need to win eight of our last ten regular season games to earn an NCAA Tournament berth. What are the odds of that happening?

This really hurts. I’m in full meltdown mode. I really thought he had a chance this season. His refusal to acknowledge that each player isn’t created equal has demolished all support.

Ryan Harrow might be the best player on our team. Seriously. At worst, he’s only behind Wood and Smith. Either way, he should get 35 a game.

DVR’d tonight’s game. I watched the first half until we were up 19, then skipped to the end and saw the final score. So at least I only wasted 15 minutes watching the game tonight.

^It’s the small victories in life, I suppose.

I noticed it against Wisconsin and it really hit home at BC. There is no real strategy or foundation, time to move on.

I am not excusing Lowe at all, I think he has proven his incompetence as a college BB coach. (Is there ANYONE on here who disagrees?) Maybe my expectations re: the three freshmen were unrealistic. However, I believe all three have been somewhat of a disappointment (again, as related to MY expectations). Brown has been generally OK, but not the mature force that I expected. I thought that he would be better at creating his own shots, and his defense is lacking (but…coaching?). I enjoy watching Harrow learn the college game, and I think he has lots of potential. He seems to play slower than I expected, but I think, probably as coached, he is being careful not to force the ball and to avoid turnovers–that’s OK, for now, but I look forward to the time he can “cut loose” and let his instincts and speed take over. As for Leslie, who knew that he had no shot from further than 2 feet from the basket, and how many close shots has he also missed? How many times has he (and other of our big men) simply stood 10 to 15 from the basket when one of our shots has gone up with no attempt whatsoever to hustle into position for a rebound? NBA material? I would be surprised if he were drafted at all, and especially in the first round, based upon what I have seen this year. I would like to see him stay and develop under a good coaching staff, but I will not be particularly disappointed if he leaves after this season. I am more concerned about his making a decision that is not in his best long-term interest.
OK, that being said, I really do not know how much better the three (or our entire team) would be if we had a coaching staff who knew how to instruct/develop young players, to teach fundamentally sound BB techniques, and to be able to get all the players to play hard ALL the time…motivation (read: leadership) is a key ingredient of coaching that Lowe apparently does not possess. I shall look forward to the positive development of our team NEXT year (yeah, WTNY).

Sinking ship, but I think some of the passengers decided to jump in the life boats after tonight. It is about time! Thanks for the 83 champioinship, but my thanks ends there. When up by 19, I waited for the inevitable to happen, and it did. Lowe you gotta go. We deserve better! UNC will kill us. Sad times in Men’s basketball at NC State. I trust our new AD, will soon pull the switch, and find us someone to bring back our glory days, that some on here may have never known.

Someone pinch me please! That didn’t just happen.

    SFN – please change title.

I hate throwing college kids under the bus (at least by name.) The problem here is with the main guy – this is not the players fault. Our HC has been here 5 years, his last 3 teams have been a reflection of him – we didn’t suck because Costner, Javi, Ferguson, McCauley, Fells, or Leslie – we suck because our main guy doesn’t demand that his players leave everything on the floor when they step on it.

    WPPHAN Says:

“Someone pinch me please! That didn’t just happen.”

Please turn out the lights. This team and this season is over. Thanks for the memories.

I had to work late today and then had supper out with my wife. I was only able to listen to the last 6 minutes of the game. I almost ran off the highway when I heard the Wolfpack radio guys mention that we had given back a 19 point first half lead. Sometimes my job really gets on my nerves, but this night was not one of them.

Then for Clemson to end the game on a 17 – 2 run, this has to be the proverbial last straw (doesn’t it). There is no way to cover up this season; no way to white wash this debacle. This is Lowe’s team. We have guards (freshmen though they may be). We have Tracy back.

There are no more excuses. Is there anyone on here that can honestly defend this product any longer?

I am confident that our AD and Chancellor are working through back channels to determine interest. This appears to be a team with a roster containing some talented young players and (possibly) incoming recruits that should be begging for a real coach. I also believe that our AD and Chancellor will handle the transition well and keep the team intact. I just can not believe it will be a start over situation for the next guy.

During the first half comeback by Clemson, I saw the offense stop running plays… it was as if, they were just running some kind of street ball basketball…. and Clemson took full advantage. I was screaming for a time out……and a REAR END CHEWING from the coach…it didn’t happen… I looked at who was playing and was befuddled as to why the lineup was what it was….. For Goodness Sake…. it just was not making sense to me….I’m not a basketball coach….never could be a basketball coach, however from my view point.. why,,, why did we change what we were doing…..and NO, it wasn’t Clemson adjusting…. we stopped what we were doing.. I just don’t know…. I just DON’T KNOW.. I hope its just FRESHMEN….. but no, Leslie, was just throwing up junk at the rim and I GUESS hoping gravity was strongest inside the rim…. CANNOT understand why he was not benched….but OH WELL…..it is now in the RECORD BOOKS as CLEMSON’s BEST COMEBACK>>>>>… and against my TEAM…. I’m In The Pack, for better or worse….but my my my my…… I just cannot understand this. Just can’t.

Alums do not always make the best coaches. I hate it for Coach Lowe, he stepped up when our imcompetent AD screwed up the last coaching search, and I know he bleeds red and white, but it’s time for a change…

  13. kbrown 01/26/2011 at 12:02 AM #

I hate to say that I can handle losing for another 5 years if we start winning with the next coach. I am done watching for the rest of the year until we grow a pair. Let’s work on a new coach now and hope we can win at least 5 games next year.

  14. ryebread 01/26/2011 at 12:06 AM #

I agree with choppack. Mods, please change the title. CJL didn’t lose that game — admittedly he didn’t help — but that just falsely lays the blame at his feet.

This game was lost by the asinine substitution pattern. Let’s see… I’ve got a plan… Let’s get up 19 points, sub that line up out and never really return to it. I’d have run that line up until they were either so gassed or in so much foul trouble that they couldn’t play. At that point, we’d have been up 30.

I can repeat my Miami game comments. The lead was built and then it was then squandered. The maddening thing is that the fact that the lead was squandered didn’t seem to be a big deal. It was more important to rest players. WTF!?!?!?

I’ll also repeat my sad question. “Is SL a coach who can build a 19 point lead in an ACC game or is he a coach that can blow a 19 point lead in an ACC game?” The answer sadly for us is both.

  15. nocard 01/26/2011 at 12:25 AM #

4 tickets 8 rows behind the NCSU bench (notice I did not say team bench). You can have them for the rest of the season. and next year if SL is still in THEEEEEEE HOUSSSSSE.

  16. nocard 01/26/2011 at 12:27 AM #

Sidney, his name is Harrow. Ryan Harrow… Say it with me now…HAAARRRROOOOWWWWW. he must have forgotten his name for 8 minutes in the 2nd half.

  17. Wolfy__79 01/26/2011 at 12:44 AM #

i would agree to cast the blame on the coach, not leslie. leslie played very poorly, i would have taken him out immediatley.

i only hope that we as state fans handle ourselves in the best manner possible as we all see what is coming.

  18. NCSU@UNCG 01/26/2011 at 12:53 AM #

Even Javi would have been better served taking CJL’s minutes… how many dumbass shots can you put up before your coach looks down the bench and just grabs anyone to sub in for you. Kendall Smith would have been better with CJL’s minutes tonight. He damn sure wouldn’t have turned the ball over as much or put up so many shots that aren’t gonna fall. I half-hearted believe myself. Piss poor performance, I’m thoroughly disgusted with where State basketball is. That game was ours for the taking and we just decided we didn’t want it. When you suck at something… you have to work to get better at it, now go do it.

  19. JeremyH 01/26/2011 at 1:14 AM #

I’m convinced that when we do play well, it is by accident.

You could see in the faces of the Clemson players towards the end of the second half: “Damn, that wasn’t so hard after all.”

I think we all owe Brandon Costner an apology, don’t you think?

  20. tjfoose1 01/26/2011 at 1:40 AM #

\I still believe Sid has proven, repeatedly now, that he does not have the necessary skill set to succeed as the HC of men’s basketball at NC State.

Another embarrassing performance. At least I won $20… after going up by 17, I bet we’d collapse in the end and lose.

There is no consistency to the squad. They are incapable of consistent, sustained performance at a high level.

No consistency, no identity, no fight. Those all point directly to coaching.

    Sad.

I would not be surprised if Sid steps down on his own. He’s a proud man, a winner, a success in many ways. He knows how to win himself, he just can’t teach it.

  21. hoop 01/26/2011 at 3:28 AM #

    Too many Ls.

  22. PackerInRussia 01/26/2011 at 3:42 AM #

    “SFN – please change title.”

Are you kidding? That’s some great alliteration! Besides, it seems to place more of the blame on Lowe than Leslie to me (perhaps the title is different than earlier, though, I don’t know).

Wow, blowing a 19 point lead. That’s not just your average, every day bad game. That’s special.

  23. wolfonthehill 01/26/2011 at 7:45 AM #

Agree – the alliteration is quite nicely-done. 🙂

And this loss can be pinned on Sid for two reasons:
    * CJ Leslie got 13 minutes of playing time – exactly 12 more than it was OBVIOUS he should’ve gotten. He was neither physically nor mentally prepared to play basketball tonight, and we could tell immediately. Playing him extensively, with most of his minutes in the second half, is illogical and damning.
& On the flip side, CJ Williams and Ryan got 21 and 25 minutes. These guys made our team click in the first half. They gave us energy, ball control, motion on offense – they made everything WORK! And then their PT gets cut in the 2nd half, sitting during the entire run that gave the game to Clemson.

Those two decisions are enough for immediate termination (which I know will not happen). But those decisions speak to either an inability to recognize the five guys who give you the best chance of winning, or a refusal to give those guys PT based on wanting to keep other guys happy. Neither is acceptable as a head coach.

  24. wolfonthehill 01/26/2011 at 7:46 AM #

And if every game is a “must win” (which Sid said Sunday), and since he lost last night, doesn’t that mean that he has failed by his own definition?

  25. Wulfpack 01/26/2011 at 7:50 AM #

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/01/25/2009886/observations-nc-state-clemson.html

“C.J. Leslie had one of those freshman learning experiences early in the first half. He had only been in the game for about a minute when he was caught in the wrong place as Clemson’s Bryan Narcisse scored on a dunk. During a timeout, Leslie was pleading his case to Lowe, who apparently didn’t want to hear it. Leslie was replaced in the lineup and took a seat beside assistant Larry Harris, who continued to coach him through the timeout.”
