NC State 72 Miami 70

It could have been the ultimate disaster after losing 17 point lead at home on the day of the celebration for 100 Years of NC State Basketball.

Thank God it wasn’t.

His rebounding is awesome but wieghing that against the rest of his game so far this season, your right. Settling into his role and not forcing the things he’s not ready for yet, that’s when you’ll see the contributions to wins. Richard Howell is a good example of that. He does a great job at what he’s capable of and doesn’t get lost in trying to do what he wishes he could do. He did that last year as a freshman too. (playing within his capabilities that is).

nycfan, concerning the 100-year anniversary comment, we discussed it here last year (topic started by you): http://www.statefansnationforums.com/topic.php?id=299#post-4652
There was a question as to whether it actually was 100 years or not. Someone said it wasn’t, that this would be the year, but gopack.com had 100 year info up and that nice logo that someone probably took a lot of time on MS Paint to make. I will join the confused group.

I didn’t accuse you of anything. “?” is generally used to denote a question…ie a request for information. Something which you have yet to provide.

Your questions imply that you have inferred from my posts a desire to prevent people from discussing the teams, wins/losses, etc – at least a possibility of this. After all, a question is asked when you are unsure of the answer. I don’t think I have ever stated what people should or shouldn’t discuss. I enjoy thoughtful debate too much to ever suggest that :-).

I understand that you can support the team without supporting the coach. Occassionally, I read a post that seems to suggest that a person may not actually support the team and perhaps does want them to fail simply to get rid of Lowe

I was pretty specific in my post about not playing a “true fan” card, becuase I understand we all have different perspectives on things. Just like there are some people on this site that will blindly support Lowe, there are some that blindly wish him to fail.

That statement, of course, is my own perception of things – I believe the vast majority to be somewhere in the middle of that. Those who blindly believe are equally ridiculous in my book.

If I misinterpreted your posts last night, I do apologize.

You said that we should support the team. The only thing that I inferred from that was that you felt that somehow the people in this thread were NOT supporting the team. I wanted to you to elaborate on what things (in your opinion) should be done to support the team and what sorts of things should NOT be done.

In any event, I expect little change in the discussion here until the product on the court dramatically improves.

I would encourage the minority that has already decided the season is over to open their mind to the prospect that we could be successful. Before you infer that I’m stating “only look at the positives”, I just mean be open to the idea. If you are in the Raleigh area and have the means, come out to a game. Obviously, financial opportunity is a big part of that so I understand not being able to make the leap. No worries. If you are a season ticket holder, use your tickets – you’ve already purchased them. I know of a few local season ticket holders who are simply not using their tickets. There are various reasons to not come to a game (geographical, family, the aforementioned financial ability), I get that, so don’t begrudge those that can’t make it out. I just hope they make the trek if they can.

I fear Feb 23rd will display a shocking number of UNC fans in the RBC. I understand business arrangements and things of that nature, family friends that happen to be UNC fans; I just hope my fears aren’t realized to the point where the broadcasters make a point to state “wow, there are just as many UNC fans in attendance as State fans”. As much as I like the impressive showings we have in Kenan, I would hate a similar outcome in the powder-blue’s favor for basketball.

Those are a few ways you can support the team. If you’ve stopped watching games, maybe give the Clemson game a chance tonight on the TV. My statement was not meant to be polarizing.

On the flip side, as I’ve stated previously, if you are blindly supporting Lowe and think he DEFINITELY should be back next year, be objective. He doesn’t “deserve” another year at this point. He has to earn it.

I don’t deal with extremes and can assure you that my original “I encourage everyone to support the team” was not asserting that everyone on this site does not support the team. Nor does it mean that if you fit the criteria I listed above regarding ticket holders, you do not support the team. It just means you have the opportunity to support the team more. But I do believe there are some people on this site (a small minority) that are either rooting for this team to lose, or will refuse to “support” them for the rest of the year. That’s the same for any NC State site. The fact is had Lowe done a better job up until now, this may not be the case.

It sucks to lose. I still hope Lowe turns it around. As long as he’s coach, I hope he turns it around.

IF (that’s as big a if i can give) nc state wins tonight and at unc-ch.. then there will be decidely more optimism! not for lowe to make it but it will translate to more people in their seats come our home matchup. i’ve seen more effort on sidney’s effort in engaging the players in the game!! he basically needs to win win win. our toughest should be va tech at home! you’re right, he’s painted himself into this corner but he has the coaching ability and the talent to really make it!

I think that in today’s CBB world, patience has to be given out in very short doses. If you wait until a coach can bring in elite talent and then hold out that in a few years that elite talent will be developed, you’ll be disappointed. Development of elite players is practically an oxymoron. Elite players can only be counted on for one maybe two years (and, in the ego-centric world of professional and non-professional basketball, that can be true even if they’re only elite in their minds). So, a coach has two options: find good/solid players that will be around for 4 years and develop them into a well-rounded team or get the high-level guys to come in and then be able to ride that short ride and harness their ability and make it fit in your system to the benefit of all. In that world, you have to be able to iron out freshman mistakes quickly, make them fit in without any major issues and hurt feelings – otherwise you risk wasting that talent completely. In that world, there is no “wait till next year” because every year is new with new problems and new players to potentially cause dissension, etc. I agree, let’s see how this year ends. I’m not anti-Sid; I’m pro-NC State, so I want what’s best for the program. I would be very happy to see them succeed. I will not be happy to see sub-average results with flashes of success and take a leap of faith that next year will be very good. Seen that movie before. Didn’t like the ending.

“I fear Feb 23rd will display a shocking number of UNC fans in the RBC.”

^There always are, but there may be even more so than usual this season. I’ll be there (at least I hope) – but the last 6 games I’ve been to at the RBC vs. the Holes I have sat beside or in-between Holes fans. Not cool. Not cool at all.

Especially when they are of the ‘Wal-Mart’ variety and come to a game for the sole purpose of antagonizing everyone around them. “Look at me! I’m an assHOLE! I cheer for the HOLES! F U PACK WANNABES!!!”

You cheer for the Holes, you say? Really? … Coulda never guessed.

Why should I open my mind to a very unlikely possibility? I’ll change my mind when the facts change…not because of some pie-in-the-sky speculation.

  10. Wolfy__79 01/25/2011 at 5:59 PM #

i would not give our recruits elite status. i’ve always looked at them as potentially elite. i look at sidney lowe as a head coach that has the ability to get the job done. he’s taking far too long and may let this slip through his fingers.

“Why should I open my mind to a very unlikely possibility?” =================================================
James T. just rolled over in his grave.

    and

    called you a QUITTER!

    “Don’t ever give up”

FWIW- after I posted the above, I went back and clicked on the story posted to the top of the main page, and voila…. there he was, talking about HOPE and DREAMS…. It’s people like Jimmy V. that look beyond a persons shortcomings and give them the benefit of the doubt,…. encouraging them to keep hope alive all the while.

God rest his soul…… Hail Jimmy V.!!!

Why should I open my mind to a very unlikely possibility?

This discussion has been incredibly enlightening.

If you subscribe to any degree of logic, you understand that our season is not over yet. We have a chance for success, and as a fan, I’ll support that chance as I have in the past, rationally. The season isn’t over until we do not have a chance to make the NCAA tournament.

My only personal caveat to this is if at the end of the season our only chance to make the NCAA is an ACC tourney championship.

Logic?? You’ve got to be kidding. I’ll watch the games that I can and pull for the Pack, but I see no reason to hope or expect for some sort of dramatic improvement in results over what we’ve seen the last 4+ seasons.

  14. packfan03 01/25/2011 at 9:55 PM #

I was wrong. I tried to fight the good fight. That was an embarrassment of epic proportions.

  15. packfan03 01/25/2011 at 9:57 PM #

I’m serious. I’m sorry. I really thought we had something in us, until tonight. We didn’t fight.

It’s over. I tried to rationalize an opinion, and, quite poetically, the team failed me in a way that Clemson had never seen. Unbelievable. I can’t say anything after this.
