NC State 72 Miami 70

It could have been the ultimate disaster after losing 17 point lead at home on the day of the celebration for 100 Years of NC State Basketball.

Thank God it wasn’t.

    ^**until the players do!

to me, clemson is alot like miami and bc. being that the 1 & 2 are the strength of the team where as the rest of the team is only a supporting cast. shouldn’t we match up against the tigers fairly well?

It’s like somebody told me several years ago when we were struggling under HWSNBN. When I asked him what was wrong with State basketball, he said simply “We can’t shoot and can’t hold on to the ball”.

Defense is our weak area this year. We are fourth in the ACC in Assist:TO, yet 10th in turnover margin.

^We lead the league in TO%.

I haven’t been tremendously impressed with Coach Lowe over the past few years, but I can acknowledge he has had his fair share of challenges. I think he would acknowledge the same.

I’m a 26 year old who desperately wants NC State to be relevant in basketball. I missed out on the glory years, but appreciate what Lowe did for us. I don’t think that point is lost on anyone. We all appreciate Lowe as a player.

I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt for the remainder of the season. I encourage everyone to support the team, for literally no other reason, just because you love this university. If our results are lacking, Yow will pull the plug. I feel confident Lowe gets that.

I’m holding out hope, rather than embracing despair. I hope you do the same. It’s 11 games, folks. That’s it.

I’m not going to play the “your not a fan” card, because I know we all are. We just have different perspectives.

Being positive within a post is a great thing but at least allow a clear view of what State basketball is going through by keeping it real. A paper lion is always blown over with the least little bit of wind. This is just one of those REAL reminders. Please take time to review just who we have beat this year, in and out of conference. Pitiful. And please don’t point out the George Mason victory, that’s rediculous. By the way, I believe we can add some real meat to the bones of the paper lion but I will keep it real until that happens.

    @TOB4PREZ:
Your tactical defense of your optimism is good from an X’s and O’s standpoint, but doesn’t players not following the game-plan come back to coaching? And doesn’t a good teacher/coach exhibit both knowledge AND the ability to get their pupils/players to execute it?

It’s a 5-yr gut-wrench for all of us, and makes some of us wonder if Sid is capable of translating the knowledge in his head to consistent results on the floor. I’ll defend Sid that he’s got a world of understanding between his ears, but that doesn’t automatically mean he can win games as a coach. Many a famous coach was a not-so-well-known player, and there are more than a few famous players who made forgettable coaches.

I encourage everyone to support the team

    Seriously, What does this mean?

    Can we discuss the team?
Can we discuss the wins and losses?
Can we only say nice things?
What are we allowed to discuss?

Just in case you are confused…
Blogs and message boards exist to discuss items.
This one exists primarily to discuss NC State sports.
The authors and most of the posters here choose to live in the real world.
Thus blindingly obvious defeciencies with the teams will be discussed.

    Any questions?

@JSRy2k- point taken, and I think a poster hit on it on the last page…. Sid’s a “players coach”, and doesn’t come across as someone that wants to embarrass them in front of their peers, which…. IMO is the only way you can get some of these kids (who have been given everything in their lives, because they excel at sport) to pay attention to what you’re saying. No doubt, Sid needs improvement in that area, and again… I think I saw a little of that starting to creep out yesterday when he berated Scott Wood all the way to the bench after he’d called a timeout. He was mad at Scott for not boxing out and trying to sneak back to create freebie for himself on the offensive end, but doing so allowed Miami to collect a deep offensive rebound. I was very encouraged to see that, and hope we continue to see more of it as needed. CJL clearly has a sensitive ego (I say this because of the head hanging that occurs when he has his shot blocked), and could potentially “check out” on Sid if he Sid were to scold him like that, but I’d welcome it in droves. He sits CJL for extended periods of time, and I think that’s the way he deals with him and his ego issues (same goes for Javy), but I would love to see them publicly reprimanded too, when they deserve it. K does this without caring who the culprit is and that may explain some of his transfer issues that creep up from time to time. these kids are clearly touchy and all are different in what stimulus works best on them, and that’s definitely a function of coaching to figure that out. I think Sid needs to lose the “players coach” that he likely sells when recruiting, and get down to brass tacks.
I’ve never contended that Sid is without faults… heck NO ONE is. My belief is (this too has been hit on in this same thread) that we need to SUPPORT our leader during the season, because he’s not going anywhere before it’s over. Some have clearly “given up” on him and are more than willing to jump ship TODAY, and that is clearly poor judgement… akin to jumping off of a seaworthy vessel while still at sea… if it’s all the same, I’ll wait til it DOCKS (see- middle of March). I’ve read far too many posts that have a clear and concise defeatist overtone to them, and I would never subscribe to such a stance. Saying things like “I highly doubt Sid can right the ship” or “no way are we going win enough games to save Sid”, or some that have even hinted we should “cut our losses pronto and fire Sid”…. are NOT encouraging to anyone, and truthfully… serve ZERO positive purposes. I tend to live life to the fullest and staying POSITIVE is a must in that regard, but I can assure you that some folks out there:

Are not happy, until they’re not happy.

I’m simply not one of those people.

per espn turnovers and assists for nc state in acc play:

    wake 10 turns 19 assts
    bc 9 turns 12 assts
    fsu 16 turns 9 assts
    duke 9 turns 11assts
    miami 8 turns 19 assts

i’ve learned that comparing nc state to the rest of the league is not favorable but honest, so here is what we’ve done on our own! so to this point and trusting mine and espn’s math this is how we performed so far with acc play. flip it and divide for your ratio. and that would be a pretty unattractive ratio for me, but i’m kind of suprised about 10.4 turns per game.

I just checked out Clemson’s accomplishments in the WIN column for this season and speaking of paper lions(in this case tigers) wow. If we don’t win this game, i’m just going to remain in numbs-ville, standing there with drool running out of my mouth waiting to see what possibly could happen next.

I encourage everyone to support the team

    Seriously, What does this mean?

You cannot be serious. As far as non-accusatory, black and white statements, “I encourage everyone to support the team” has to be as non-divisive as a statement can be regarding sports.

I find it absolutely hilarious that you found a problem with that statement.

Sorry everyone, encouraging support apparently does the following:

    Prevents discussing the teams
    Prevents discussing wins and losses
    Prevents analysis

Find a post where I have ever said anything that amounts to what you have accused me of. In this entry alone I haven’t tried to shut people up, just share my perspective. Go on, analyze away. I enjoy the author team on this site more than any other because you aren’t sheep who decide to simply support who is in charge. Kudos, truly.

Obviously, I come on this site to discuss topics and encourage message board conversation. As you say, we’re here to “discuss”. If anything, my posts contribute to the discussion as I am in the minority. It seems that the dissenting opinion, in contrast with the majority, would be beneficial to said discussion.

I certainly am not blindly optimistic. I want Yow to conduct her review at the end of the year and make the right decision. If Sid needs to go, he needs to go. She is more capable of making the right decision regarding Sid than either of us, VA.

I simply hope Coach Lowe turns it around. I’m not ashamed of that opinion.

^^clemson may not be one to brag about but they certainly aren’t one for this young PACK team to overlook! on the road, give them +5. they should have beaten unc and it appears they about topped md. so, it looks like they’ve been “in” every acc game this year! stitt can give us nightmares!

  14. Wolfy__79 01/24/2011 at 10:01 PM #

our leading scorer tracy @ 15.6/game should be our second best’s numbers. i like how we have various players that can step up and fill in for points but until we have a key player for our offense. teams don’t have to concentrate enough on a tracy smith or scott wood or whomever. this is one of the areas i pay attention to for improvement! with tracy leading the way, this should provide multiple open looks for our team

  15. swamppack 01/24/2011 at 10:06 PM #

^^Yes and I hope Lowe convinces the team of what you just posted Wolfy_79 or we’ll be lamenting over another embarrassment come 9:30 tomorrow night.

  16. swamppack 01/24/2011 at 10:17 PM #

I really believe if Sid will keep Harrow running the point he will be the key to getting Tracy up to that 20/21 pt. per game your speaking of.

  17. Wolfy__79 01/24/2011 at 10:30 PM #

i’m pretty sure harrow is the pg from here on out. javi came in off the bench yesterday to the 2spot while lorenzo slid over to pg (most of the time). in college hoops, tracy should be able to get 20pts/game.

    http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2010-2011/confldrs.html

i’m rooting like crazy for nc state to get to the top. but to be realistic, look at the areas we’ll need to be more competitive in to get closer.. unfortunately, the numbers do not lie. if you were to avg theacc.com’s rankings accross the board, i think our avg rank would probably be around 8th. so that’s pretty consistent with our ranking as well. the defensive numbers are very telling !!

  19. swamppack 01/24/2011 at 10:52 PM #

Let me say too I realize I hung a lot on Harrow with a statement like that him being a freshman. He’s shown nothing but can-do this season though. He respects his bigs. He wants to see them get a clean look off of a smooth assist near the basket. In the Miami game during crunch time I plainly saw him watch Tracy on the left side of the lane while he drove the ball down the right side of the lane, got both defenders on him and cooly dished to Tracy for an easy two. Why was that fundamental play so exciting to me? Think about the last 20 yrs.

  20. swamppack 01/24/2011 at 11:02 PM #

I was on ACC.com earlier tonight myself and saw the same thing you did, AVERAGE. Like you said i’m rooting for State like crazy to bring those #’s up also along with the wins. Will something click for Sid? Will the players step fully into thier roles? As has been said so many times before, only time will tell.

  21. Wolfy__79 01/24/2011 at 11:21 PM #

^^i remember that exact play. tracy was begging for the ball in the wrong spot but eventually got to his spot and got the easy two! he’s a smart guard, i certainly can see him developing into a major acc threat. i don’t see his shot coming to him this year, mainly the 3.. but his floater works in the mean time.

  22. Wolfy__79 01/24/2011 at 11:23 PM #

i’m not sure i’m hearing this correctly but has carlton tudor dubbed leslie a one and done? leslie is in no way prepared for the nba. he would do worse than powell at this point. and powell has somehow managed to make himself relevant coming off of the bench! i hate it for him if he goes!

  23. VaWolf82 01/24/2011 at 11:27 PM #

You cannot be serious. As far as non-accusatory, black and white statements, “I encourage everyone to support the team” has to be as non-divisive as a statement can be regarding sports.

I didn’t accuse you of anything. “?” is generally used to denote a question…ie a request for information. Something which you have yet to provide.

My laundry list of “?” was simply a multiple choice list of things for you to choose from if any of those things fit your definition of NOT supporting the team.

By the way, just because someone doesn’t think that State CAN win under the current circumstances, doesn’t mean that are pulling for them to lose.

  24. swamppack 01/24/2011 at 11:57 PM #

I hate to see any kid leave college early only to see them, well, you know. I guess i’m really idealistic but I just can’t see the logic in any kid passing up the security of a college degree While honing his skills. I know, that opens a big can of worms and i’m also old-fashioned. Back to CJL. No way is he ready after this year. We may be tempted to cower in our own opinions sometime for fear of somebody saying “who are you to know it all?” but the truth of it is a fan who follows closely can call it right about 90% of the time on matters like this. He is erratic in all facets of the game right now. I will admit too i’m greedy as a State fan and would like to see his potential fulfilled here.

  25. Wolfy__79 01/25/2011 at 12:04 AM #

personally i feel he doesn’t really contribute to wins at all this year. i did not expect him to either. this recruiting class to me is/was all about harrow and lorenzo. leslie doesn’t even come close to them in my eyes. don’t get me wrong, he can be a great player.. but he has a long way to go. i think mostly for this year he just needs to settle down.
