OK, as a good NC State Grad. My comment is they need to go back teaching these kids how to give a proper gig. Where I am from that would be called a girl gig. He needs to learn to put hte balls on it.

Prowling – I was at that one – 4th row behind the unc-ch bench. Truly beautiful to watch.

    Then we lost 9 straight.

Then we went to unc-ch and beat their asses AGAIN!!!! (These two, by the way, are available on the ACC Vault online – worth watching.)

PoppaJohn – I was about three rows up from you, sitting right behind Jim Graham (The Sod Father). Loved watching games in Reynolds… The seats were tiny and there was no legroom (I’m 6’4″), but when that applause meter hit the top – just awesome !!!

^That was awesome when we beat them again in Chapel Hell after losing 9 straight after the Googs game in Reynolds, but the game I wish they had on the ACC Vault online is the 1991 game in Reynolds, when we had to play them on back to back nights because the 1st meeting in the Dean Dome had been canceled due to the start of the Gulf War, I just remember how electric that game was in Reynolds, but they ran out of gas the next night @ Carolina, but that 1st night was oh so sweet….

February 6-7, 1991: NC State and North Carolina face each other on back-to-back nights, playing the regularly scheduled game at Reynolds Coliseum on February 6 and then playing at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill on February 7. Tom Gugliotta scored 28 points and grabs 10 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack to a 97-91 victory in game at Reynolds Coliseum. North Carolina wins the second game at the Smith Center.

Had forgotten that sequence, section2chuck – thanks for reminding me. Incredible circumstances surrounding that year, but once again, Googs was unstoppable ! Wonder what Les’ record would’ve been without Googs on the team ???

Hearing everybody reminisce about Tom Gugliotta brings to mind something: As I recall, Tom was given a scholarship by Valvano because Tom’s dad was an old friend of V’s (or V’s father, perhaps.) Gugs was only 6’6″ when he arrived at State and had not been on ANYBODY’S radar screen. Four years later, he was one of the premier stars of the ACC at 6’10” and an NBA star shortly thereafter. Did V know something nobody else knew? And even if he didn’t, he polished that rough diamond into a real jewel. He didn’t have to have the nearly finished product just to compete. He knew how to make the most of what he had and overachieved with it. Admittedly, that is RARE quality – but something NC State needs in its coach.
