State (11-5, 1-1) @ Florida State (12-5, 2-1)
TV: 4pm ACC Network (FOX50 in the Triangle)

For those of you that can’t watch or will be watching the Ravens-Steelers instead, check in here throughout today’s game for regular updates and random comments.

State goes to Tallahassee after a disheartening collapse in Chestnut Hill Tuesday Night, losing 75-66 after being tied at 60 with under four minutes remaining, spurred by Lowe’s *questionable* benching of Ryan Harrow in favor of Javi Gonzalez during crunch time. Meanwhile, Florida State will try to avoid the always-dreaded letdown game after defeating #1 Duke 66-61 on Wednesday Night at the Tucker Center.

Mike Hogewood and Cory Alexander announcing. The last time I saw Cory Alexander, he was helping lead Virginia to the Elite Eight in 1995.

Starters:
State – Leslie, Wood, Smith, Brown, Harrow
Florida State – James, Singleton, Shannon, Snaer, Kitchen

Just so we’re clear: Lowe pulled Harrow for his defensive lapse in a critical situation the other night, but since then he’s suddenly earned a starting role? I’m confused, other than not scoring, has Javi done something to no longer start? Am I the only one struggling with that “logic?”

1st Half
15:20 – Florida State 6-4. Nothing much to say so far, both teams have combined for 5-of-15 shooting to this point.

Wednesday Night’s raucus crowd didn’t show up today.

13:53 – Javi checks in, coming off the bench for the first time this season. Read that last part again. Yes, it’s true. My buddy just texted me that Gary Hahn said it was because Javi was late for practice.

11:56 – Florida State 12-6. True to form, the Pack start slow, shooting only 3-of-16 (19%). However, we’re dominating the offensive glass. Baby steps.

9:54 – Tied at 12. Ugly game so far, but State closes the gap after a four-point play by Wood and then a miraculous 20-footer by Javi, who with that shot is already at 40% of his per game average of five.

6:53 – Florida State 16-14. Too many turnovers for the Pack (8) and too few for the Noles (4). State shooting only 6-of-20 (30%).

3:53 – Florida State 22-16. State being absolutely dominated in the paint, 18-4. Noles on a 6-0 run after State tied it at 16 out of the under eight timeout.

Cory Alexander talks about his love for Bojangle’s, which has been the most interesting comment he’s made all day. It amazes me that there are like 47 states with folks that have no clue what they’re missing out on.

I can’t tell the difference between Bunny from “The Wire” and Leonard Hamilton.

Half – Florida State 28-19. Well, this looks like it may get out of hand. After being tied at 16, FSU went on a 12-3 run over the final 6:17 of the half, during which State shot 1-of-8 and I lost track of the points in the paint differential, but it’s something like 22-4.

Florida State’s scoring was spread fairly even among its starters, with Shannon leading all scorers with eight. Javi is State’s leading scorer with five, which puts him on pace for a relatively monster game. State had 10 turnovers to the Noles’ six; State shot 27% against FSU’s 41%.

2nd Half
I’m sure most of the dozen or so State fans watching the first half still haven’t flipped back over from Ravens-Steelers. And really, who could blame them?

15:15 – Florida State 44-28. Singleton hit FSU’s first three at 17:58, on an inbounds pass where he was not guarded. FSU is 6-of-6 so far in the half. Alexander wants us to believe Lowe told the team to get the ball to Tracy; now that’s the most innovative coaching since Dennis Hopper’s swinging gate, trying to get the ball to your leading scorer.

11:59 – Florida State 53-36. FSU has its largest lead of the game. Our defense has held the Noles to 100% FG in the half (8-of-8).

NC State: The cure for the common hangover.

We’re playing so bad it crashed my personal laptop, so I had to switch over to my work laptop. No way is that a coincidence.

10:47 – FSU misses its first field goal of the half (8-of-9).

The full court press, as usual, creates easy baskets for our opponent.

For the few of you actually still reading this, you may want to stop by the SFN Forums to discuss a topic that gets more relevant with the passing of each game.

7:58 – Florida State 61-46. It’s officially out of hand. Bunny Colvin calls a timeout after Wood hit an uncontested three, clearly upset that we cut it to 15 when it should really be closer to 20.

3:23 – Florida State 77-57. Laughable. The 20-point lead is FSU’s highest margin in an ACC game since it led Carolina by 23 last January.

Final – Florida State 84-71

Quick Summary: State never led, it wasn’t nearly as close as the 13-point margin indicates, and it was simply a microcosm of Lowe’s tenure (ESPN.com Box Score).

Duke is next.

If you had the stomach to get this far, then head on over to the SFN Forums to peruse a variety of topics having nothing to do with State basketball.

Anyone have thoughts on who will be candidates for the next coach and would Barnes reconsider since Fowler is gone?

  2. Rochester 01/15/2011 at 9:08 PM #

Is this the official start of the last death spiral of Sidney’s tenure?

  3. Wulfpack 01/15/2011 at 9:22 PM #

We have now lost our 6 games against the top 50 RPI by an average of more than 15 points. That isn’t even NIT worthy. We have sunk to new depths with the most talent we’ve had here in ages. Sid is an absolutely horrible basketball coach. There is no two ways about it.

  4. Fenrir 01/15/2011 at 9:29 PM #

I have not been on here and left a comment in awhile, so I figured I would add my two cents worth. My observations over the last few years have not changed. IT’S THE COACH AND ASSISTANTS!!!! I have never seen a team less prepared on game day. During the week leading up to your game you coach and during the game you make adjustments to what you have coached. This isn’t or cannot be happening by what I observe during the games. DO you see coach K or OL’ Roy giving directions while the clock is running? When their players are setting up to run the offense do you hear them whistle and have the players turn to look for the play? HELL NO!! Lowe does all his coaching on game day and Towe and Harris sit like bumps on a log. WE have talent those boys should be putting the hurt on everyone they play.

  5. Wulfpack 01/15/2011 at 9:40 PM #

the good news is this will all be over soon. It’ll be quick and quasi-painless if you promise yourself not to watch the debacles unfold. Next 6 games; Duke, Miami, Clemson, UNC, VT, Duke. At best, we win two. If that’s to be the case, it’s all over – curtians. See ya, Sid.

  6. wolfy85 01/15/2011 at 10:07 PM #

It’s so bad right now that it’s hard to watch these games. We aren’t prepared and we are completely incompetent on Defense and now it even seems on Offense. BTW, Good point about Lowe “coaching” and yelling during the game. I don’t know an example of a “decent” college coach that does that as much as him during the game. This would make you think that we don’t do anything during the week and have no clue on game day. It’s a damn shame with the ACC being so mediocre and us having so much talent, albeit mostly young, and yet haven’t even been able to win, even compete against some of the better teams we’ve played. I’ve lost hope, I was fully behind Sid, but I think his time is over. Bring in j Hodge as interim coach.

I know this is an anathema but hire a Duke or (gulp) UNC alum with real coaching experience.

  8. coach13 01/15/2011 at 10:16 PM #

5 years wasted on the Sid Lowe “experiment”.

Glad I coached my 7-8 daughter’s team today vs wathcing State’s crappy team. FYI…my girl’s team is 3-0. I am willing to take over the pack immediately for the same salary.

  9. LRM 01/15/2011 at 11:00 PM #

FYI, the likely coaching search is being discussed on the SFN Forums: http://www.statefansnationforums.com/topic.php?id=3927

If this bunch wins 4 conference games, it will be a big surprise. Weak on offense, weak on defense, too many turnovers, beat up on the boards, and still can’t run a fast break worth a crap. Nothing has changed every year since Sid got here. I am done wasting time watching this train wreck.

  11. wolfpack4ever 01/15/2011 at 11:10 PM #

    Rochester,

Yes, I believe so. The death spiral has begun.

    Fenrir,

I, too, have been away for little while. I may well spend more time on SFN and less time watching the product that Wolfpack basketball has become.

At least we have Debbie Yow to lead the search and make a good hire. However, I feel sorry for Sidney. He is a Wolfpacker through and through. However, he is obviously not a college coach. He presently finds himself in this situation because of that useless POS, Lee Fowler.

A good friend of mine and fellow Wolfpacker commented last week to me that he would rather have HWSNBN back rather than keep Lowe. I would rather shut down the basketball program than think about either one as a future coach. I am too old for this $h!!t. I fondly remember the ’73 & ’74 teams and the miracle run of 1983. I can only hope that I will live long enough for Wolfpack basketball to be relevant again.

Debbie Yow, please privately offer for Sidney to resign and make it appear that he wants to return to the NBA as an assistant. If he doesn’t, then do the right thing and fire his A$$! The longer I watch this season, the more of a grouchy old man I become.

  12. OldWuf 01/15/2011 at 11:37 PM #

Sad. The last two games are the beginning of the end for Sid. Man I hate it, but I think he has dug a hole that he can’t dig out of. We won’t make the tourney based on record and this team seems highly unlikely to make a run through the conf tourn. we have the talent; I can’t remember when we have had this much. Sid has not gotten these guys ready to play. College basketball does not allow the luxury of 2-3 years to develop some of these kids. You gotta get them ready quickly.

    When we hongary, we eat…

    When we play, we suck!

  14. triadwolf 01/15/2011 at 11:44 PM #

    When I watch, I puke…

  15. Rochester 01/16/2011 at 12:01 AM #

Remember Harrow’s open letter to the Pack faithful last spring? Wonder if he sees it our way now.

  16. PackInsider 01/16/2011 at 12:02 AM #

“I know this is an anathema but hire a Duke or (gulp) UNC alum with real coaching experience”

Why would you think there’s nobody else available?

  17. tuckerdorm1983 01/16/2011 at 12:30 AM #

    I was just sayin……

Herb has us dribble the ball around for 33 secs and then shoot a three pointer.

Sid doesn’t even give us that. He keeps subing players looking for the right matchups. Meanwhile teams take open threes and uncontested layups.

We face Duke next wed. That should be like having a root canal without any painkillers.

  18. BureauOfMines 01/16/2011 at 12:46 AM #

“Anyone have thoughts on who will be candidates for the next coach and would Barnes reconsider since Fowler is gone?”

Why would Barnes want to leave his current job?

Pearl is in the doghouse. We might be able to get him.

Several years ago, I rooted for the 9-game losing streak to close the season from about the 4th or 5th loss on. That team was going nowhere and a false sense of accomplishment would have been no help to the following year. Well, does anybody else feel like it would be a false sense of accomplishment for this coaching staff to ‘recover’ this season?

As for this coaching position, we should have suitors lined up at the door: ACC Top-3 program (historically), incredible AD to work for, fabulous talent in the rising Soph. & Jr. classes. I’m totally w/ BJD95 (see p. 1) – it will be a “gloriously new, competent coaching search”.

What’s to be mad about? The more we lose now, the more winning we can look forward to down the road.

  20. russwuf 01/16/2011 at 2:14 AM #

yep the next stretch of games will be brutal…i honestly dont even think we can keep the score close/respectable really. I love Yow and what she has done so far….will she have the guts to dismiss Sid midseason as he should be…or let the rest of the season be flushed down the toilet?
Stop the bleeding now YOW! the Pack Nation is to the point of apathy and I dare say the upcoming crowds at the RBC will def be down.

  21. BureauOfMines 01/16/2011 at 4:06 AM #

“Well, does anybody else feel like it would be a false sense of accomplishment for this coaching staff to ‘recover’ this season?”

Yeah. Everything I’ve seen so far has convinced me nothing has changed.

JSRy2k, You’re quite right that a 9 game losing streak would make it easier to do what should be done. I’m reminded of the phrase “fail fast”. A long losing streak now would preclude any mitigating redemption.

Now that I have had a night to think about this. I think we should give Lowe 5 years. He will have his own players in there and they will know his system and how to run it. It is very hard for Lowe to work his system with players that are for another system. We need to understand that his sytem takes time.

Holy S–t my wife just told me that Lowe has been here for 5 years and that this is all his players. Well I am sorry to waste time writing.

Now after the lost BC I told myself I would not watch another game and I did not watch FSU game thank god, but I did kept you with the score and it is the same thing as the last 4 years with more talent. I dont even know what to say anymore.

I only wish that Yow would go on and pull Lowe so I would not feel so bad about losing. It sure is hell to go to work with a bunch of Tarhole fans and listen to then talk about our basketball team and I have to say that they are right. It’s over. I was really hoping it would work out. Now I don’t think it ever will.

I do not know enough of the X’s and O’s of basketball to know what the true problem is.

What are they doing in practice? How are they so seemingly unprepared?
What is the thought process behind some of the playing time allocation?
Is it a lack of understanding that while the NBA is about creating and exploiting one on one match-ups, college BB is about one on ZERO matchups?

  24. Wulfpack 01/16/2011 at 9:31 AM #

This debacle has little to do with x’s and o’s. Any one of us could get more out of this team. He’s lost them, as he’s lost his other teams. Nothing new here. The quicker he’s gone, the quicker the healing process will be. The team should just coach itself. That’s basically what is going on anyways.

  25. bradleyb123 01/16/2011 at 12:05 PM #

NC State has effectively killed my interest in college basketball. Almost 25 years of terrible basketball will do that. There’s only so much ugly basketball one can watch, and I’ve hit my limit.
