Breaking: Gavin Grant arrested, Degand not charged (Updated 11:10pm)

Police on Sunday arrested a former North Carolina State University basketball player in connection with a home invasion last fall.

Gavin Troy Grant, 25, is charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. He was apprehended without incident in a home in the 5400 block of Summit Manor Lane, police said, and he was expected to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

The charges stem from a home invasion on Crossroads Arbor Way on Sept. 24. Police said two men forced their way into an apartment, assaulted two people who were inside and attempted to rob them. The occupants fought off the men, who fled before completing the robbery.

Police haven’t identified the second robber, but one of Grant’s arrest warrants names Farnold Degand as a conspirator in the robbery.

Grant was a forward/guard for N.C. State from 2004 to 2007. Degand was a Wolfpack guard from 2007 until last year.

Grant, who played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League from 2007 to 2010, was charged with a felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses in January 2009.

Grant was recruited to NC State by Herb Sendek. Degand by current Head Coach, Sidney Lowe.

Don’t know what to say at times like this. So, I will let one of the finest representatives of our local Universities make the point to help clear Farnold Degand. (Link) Don’t you know that only the robbers who get caught are the ones who did anything wrong and should get in trouble?

One of Grant’s arrest warrants names Farnold Degand as a conspirator in the robbery, but Sughrue said he wasn’t been charged in the case.

Degand told WRAL News Monday, “I wasn’t there at all. I was never in the vicinity. I had to answer some questions, but was never charged with anything, and I’m just trying to get my name cleared now.”

It does not bode well for Degans if his name is on any of the filed paperwork What are the chances that a second former player was implicated by mistake? That’s odd. If so, the popo owes him an apology.

Why does it have to be former NCSU basketball player arrested? I know a guy who graduated from Wake, fell on hard times, robbed a bank, got caught. The headlines didn’t say former Wake grad robs RBC. He didn’t play basketball but he still is a former Wake student. Heck, former Governor Mike Easley is a prominent UNC grad but the headlines didn’t read former UNC alum convicted of a felony. Point being, alot of criminals graduated or was associated with a University, just seems the tag is not needed.

^^ The media has to sell papers or get web hits, so they sensationalize. It’s unfortunate.

@fullmoon1: He could have been named as a co-conspirator on an affidavit based on erroneous information the police received. That happens all the time, and doesn’t mean the police didn’t do their jobs properly. They can’t help it if they get bad information and in their due diligence include it in their report. He hasn’t been charged. If Degand is arrested unconstitutionally, then he would deserve an apology, but that is not the case.

Hopefully, nothing will come of his alleged involvement, and his alibi will hold up.

Good point we are cured. My wife who holds a civilian position with a local pd just explained how such a thing could happen on paper.

That’s one more assist than Degand had in all of his senior season.

As for Gavin, there’s no point in guarding his innocence, but sometimes you have to go backward, before you can go forward..

The only time State basketball players ever take a charge is in court, not on it.

On the bright side, maybe this will take some of the attention away from our current squad’s struggles. Thanks, Gav!

Police have ruled out Grant’s mid-range jumper as the deadly weapon.

^LRM, did he shoot a brick at them?

Gavin’s lawyer plans to delay the trial so they can “run their stuff”.

Harsh. We should all wait a bit and let the facts play out before so quickly jumping in to publically trash our own guys.

oh I agree 100% tjfoose1. judgments based on opinions of character is silly.

I’ll third the motion. While Grant has been in trouble before, Degand, from what I’ve heard has been wrongly accused by an eyewitness. Wow, they recognize Grant and pick out another African-American male with him as Farnold Degand – must be…he played basketball at State, too. I’m sure that’s the first time an African-American male has been wrongly accused by an “eyewitness.”

Let’s not wrongly associate Degand until facts are known.

I reckon I ain’t gonna watch our next game. Those highly objectionable commentators will have a field day with this and further raise my blood pressure.

    Thanks a lot Gavin.

When players/former players from other schools get in trouble, some fan bases rush to their defense even at risk of sounding irrational and obviously biased (you can probably think of a few). Our fans – at least the ones on this site – laugh it off and make clever jokes. (note: this is not a complaint; just an observation. I laughed very hard at several of them)

BureauOfMines, I don’t know when the next game is. Don’t tell me. Nothing good can come of it.

Maybe not Wake so much, especially lately, but you can be sure that the RBC has been “robbed” by most of our other ACC foes in the past 10 years or so.

Everyone remember how Gav used to flash Bronx gang signs? Not really a surprise with him. X X X

I predict a very high value bond, because of his tendency to disappear on the court.

From the Greensboro News & Record: “Gavin Grant, a former standout N. C. State basketball player, was acquitted Thursday of first-degree burglary and robbery with a dangerous weapon charges related to a home invasion robbery”
