218th UNC-NC State Game Preview

NC State and Carolina are meeting this Saturday at 2:00PM in Chapel Hill on ESPN, no doubt, for their 218th basketball game.  This will either be more of the same against an opponent that it completely sucks to lose two, or it will be a Les Robinson moment where despite fielding an underwhelming squad, the head coach is able to pull out a win against arch-rival Carolina.  Either way, this is how we stack up.

Carolina is currently 14-5 (4-1 in the ACC) and 3rd in the ACC.  I hate to dissect wins because… well… a win is a win, but of Carolina’s ACC games, the loss came to a fairly unimpressive GT squad and none of their wins have shown any form of dominance.  In reality, UNC’s last win against Miami only came after trailing the majority of playtime and was only assured in the last second of gameplay when Barnes decided to actually act like he is a recruit worth his ranking and hit a 3.

God, I hate Carolina so —-ing much.

Carolina, in true Roy Williams form, relies on hard-hitting Forwards to score the bulk of their points.  The only players Williams has scoring double digits are Tyler Zeller, Harrison Barnes, and John Henson, all playing Forward.  It’s also worth noting that Tyler Zeller is by far Carolina’s hardest player to match-up.  He is 7 feet tall and 250 lbs.  The only player we have that physically matches up to Zeller is Vandenburg.  I am not a fan of our Aussie migrant player, but he does manage to get a few good rebounds every game he plays and he is one of our better blockers.  He would be a good defensive asset against Carolina’s Forward offense, but don’t plan on NC State jacking up the score with him on the court (only 1.5 PPG).

Bottom line, if NC State is going to beat Carolina, we must stop the run.  We have to force Carolina to slow down and deny them the paint.  This shouldn’t be a problem with NC State’s stellar defensive skills, right? …right?

So how does NC State win?  Keep the ball where WE want it and let Scott Wood take some damn shots!  If Lowe hasn’t been working specifically with Wood on taking highly contested shots, than NC State basketball coaching will have hit a new low(e).  NC State is statistically worse than Carolina in every aspect (points per game, rebounds, assists, blocks, et al) except for one: we shoot better from the line and behind the arc.  Basically, we are a more accurate team.  Carolina’s FG% is high because their strategy is to get the ball to the forwards and use Zeller’s fat ass to beast some 2 pointers.  So far, it’s been moderately effective.

The one thing NC State simply can not continue to do is not move the ball.  I spoke in a previous blog post about the importance of NC State and getting assists.  In order to dominate from the field, which will be our key to success, we will need to be looking for those opportunities and kicking the ball out once the lane has closed.

Bwaaaaaaaaah! Take that, Hansbrough, you little prick.

Carolina has 3 players with double-digit points per game.  NC State has 4.  Carolina’s top 6 players are bringing in an average of 8.6 PPG.  NC State’s top 6 bring in 10.7 PPG.  We can outshoot Carolina, but we are going to have to get our players to move the ball and avoid defense giants on Carolina’s team like Henson (2.9 BPG) and shut down Carolina’s ability of their guards to feed the ball to Zeller.  Carolina’s guards, Drew and Marshall, are averaging around 4 assists per game.

If we win, call me..I’m gonna do something I’ve never done and that is to go to Biltmore and see if it was as interesting as Hearst Castle. I’d much rather camp out in the winery though…

UNX isn’t that good this years, and cetainly lucked out on some wins. Only problem is we are worse. Could enjoy a win, but don’t see that happening. So if we are gonna lose, I am all for getting our a– kicked. Another nail in the coffin. The farewell tour continues.

I am conditioned to the tail-whippings State will recieve tommorrow and the embarrassment as a fan that follows. Deep inside the continuing tragedy that is State basketball bothers me bad but my conditioning I spoke of makes me appear to handle it well.

Isn’t it 8 strait losses against the holes? I don’t even wan’t to do the research to find out our record against them since ’92.

Why do I use the word embarrassment? I feel embarrassed to try to carry on a ligitimate, substantial conversation with someone who is not a die-hard State fan. After 20 yrs. of confounded futility you just kind of run out of things to say. Even bringing up the 50’s-80’s is starting to make me feel stupid in front of an outsider. Man that was 20 yrs. ago!

Among State fans and friends though I still like reliving the glory days and also having someone to hash out our current problems with.

As for tommorrow, only the fact that sports are never 100% predictable leaves us any kind of chance.

everyone has anticipated Barnes Breakout Game.

  6. choppack1 01/28/2011 at 10:50 PM #

    I’ll watch it.

We don’t match up well w/ them. Their big men are tall and athletic – they’ll be able to keep Howell and Smith from getting good looks. If their guards play horridly and they don’t defend Wood well, we’ve got a shot.

if tracy would play within his abilities he would be much more effective. he’s made some nice improvements with his face up game, but that’s all he really tries to do.. i’ve seen him get into the paint and do some damage this year, but not nearly enough!

henson and zeller will play together defensively, all tracy needs to do is be vocal to get his players to rotate around to him for the kick. simple as that. i realize that the cards aren’t in our favor, nothing i’ve seen this year warrants much respect on their part! unfortunately our either.

^^so barnes is to have a breakout game against us? i’ve been waiting to see a level of consistency from him all year.. he’s average, that’s all.

I’m going to watch the game, but don’t know if I can handle the ESPN commentators. Pretty sure it is a prerequisite to love UNC-Ch before working there.

If we’re losing, it will be “UNC is growing up right before our eyes! Player X is having a career day!”
If we’re up, it will be “UNC is a young team, but they are progressing!”
They’ll hopefully at least mention Roy’s blowup/coverup on his shows.

  9. turfpack 01/29/2011 at 12:41 AM #

For the first time in 30years I will not be watching…enough said.

  10. Wolfman 9806 01/29/2011 at 1:19 AM #

We know how the game will go. We’ll come out with a little fight, maybe even lead for a little while. Then the heels will make a run, assume the lead and game over. Once we fall behind, its game over as always.

Not watching, no thank you. It’s not that we always lose, but that we have become a f–king punchline that is driving me away from our basketball program.

    How long till spring practice?

Don’t forget baseball. Not that crazy about college baseball, but at least we are successul in the sport.

Swamppack’s post cracked me up. That is about how I feel, I’ll watch the game out of some kind sick, twisted habit. I know just as well as everyone on here what the likely outcome will be but I’m gonna put myself thru it. My hatred of unc is almost as strong as my love of state so I actually have two reasons to watch; pulling for the pack and pulling against the holes. Also as I’ve said on here before, this is one of 3 days of the year (4 if we get em in the acct) that I wake up with a little extra giddy-up at the fact that we just might ruin a lot of arrogant pricks’ day. Ah, hope and optimism…

  13. 61Packer 01/29/2011 at 9:23 AM #

Ah, hope and optimism for the Wolfpack basketball fan, put to James Taylor music:

In our mind we’re goin’ to beat Carolina
Been exposed to too much sunshine
    Been drinking too much moonshine
Ain’t it gonna be our luck this time
To get kicked in our behinds
Yes we’re goin’ to beat Carolina in our minds.

  14. tuckerdorm1983 01/29/2011 at 9:34 AM #

We will certainly lose if we are up by 20 with 10 mins to go in the 2nd half. That will be the kiss of death. Collapse is imminent. If with less than five mins to go and we are up a point or down a few, then maybe, just maybe we could win. Of course assuming that Leslie doesn’t take some wild ass shot like he does every evening as he plays NBA JAM and selects Lebron as his player.

  15. Wolfy__79 01/29/2011 at 11:07 AM #

^it is some sort of sick, twisted habit for all of us! can’t we put this behind us! i agree with the espn commentators… i hate the love fest..

^^nicely put 61! laugh til i cry, the new theme for nc state basketball!

    GO PACK!!

  16. Wolfy__79 01/29/2011 at 11:13 AM #

..all i ask of the players is for someone to show some leadership..poise on the floor in those tough stretches!! you know, those periods towards the end of the game where we fold?? the last few minutes of the game are so excrutiating to watch when the opponent first goes up by two.. the next thing you know we are down by ten pts with a minute to go.. seriously, do any of our players have any common sense?

  17. TOBtime 01/29/2011 at 11:15 AM #

Why can’t we rotate Painter and Vandenburg on Zeller to wear the guy out? That’s 10 fouls to give. It worked for Stanford on TIm Duncan. Tracy should be able to score on him if the guy is tired. It seems to me we should also be able to exploit the point guard position. Harrow is still learning but that kid shows some things on the floor we haven’t had in Raleigh in a LONG time. The holes don’t match up with him except from an experience level. Maybe this will be one of those dream days that Harrow can get the ball to Wood and he is simply unconscious and drills the hole for 30.

The holes do suck worse than their record but have played some decent 2nd half D. It’s kept them in games and won 4 for them. Unfortunately, we have as good athletes for a change but we don’t play D.

    Love it ’61!
Top of the charts on WTNY

  19. BJD95 01/29/2011 at 12:41 PM #

UNC has beaten the snot out of us of late because Roy still DOES view it as a rivalry game, and makes sure his players do as well. Which is why we don’t catch them flat. Still, they aren’t any good. But we are worse.

    I will not watch.

    So, so true.

I’ve got a feeling this will be just another stop on the Lowe farewell tour.

  23. swamppack 01/29/2011 at 2:03 PM #

I have become really twisted as a result of being a wolfpack basketball fan. I would be more excited about Carowhiner losing today than the State win.

Mediocrity with no end in sight breeds some disturbing things.

  24. Rochester 01/29/2011 at 3:12 PM #

I was ambivalent about a mid-season firing, but now I’m thinking a mid-game firing would be appropriate. Grab someone out of the stands at halftime to coach us in the second half. This is pathetic.

And someone please, please burn that red sport coat.

Anyone think Sid will retire after the game?? I’ll keep hoping!
