WV Wolf: I really appreciate you pulling this information together this season.

I don’t remember if anyone did stats like this for last year, but I’d be very curious to see how the final numbers from this year stack up against last year. I would imagine we made improvements across the board (especially on defense). If someone has the time to put that together, that would be awesome!

The 2009 stats are inflated because State played two I-AA teams last year. The 2009 defensive stats are further inflated because SC’s offense was non-existent in the first game of the year.

If you want to do a meaningful comparison from one year to the next, you are better off using stats from only the conference games. This site will let you easily do that:

I spent some time looking at CFBStats earlier this week and observed some interesting trends in our performance. If I have time I’ll post a comment or a thread about it.

  8. Texpack 12/03/2010 at 3:48 PM #

Major difference at first blush was the improvement in ppg allowed both in terms of the absolute number and in terms of where we ranked nationally.

Good point, VaWolf. If I have some time this weekend, I’ll try to do a comparison of this year’s conference games vs. last years. Thanks!

I’d also like to express thanks for doing these stats all season, and for the ’09 comparison. I’ve used these to compare all season to our upcoming opponent for each respective week. This time I got nobody to compare.

I’ll sure be glad when we get bowl announcements out of the way and we finally know who we get to hate for the next few weeks.

Here’s the Conference Stats Comparisons for 2009/2010:

    Conference Stats 2009

    Rushing Yards: 110.1 (9)
    Passing Yards: 277.6 (5)
    Total Offense: 387.7 (6)

    Defense
Points Per Game: 39.4 (ACC Rank: 12)
    High: 52
    Low: 7
Rushing Yards: 170.7 (ACC Rank: 10)

    Defense: 4 fumbles, 6 interceptions, 10 total
    Turnover Margin: -12

    2010 Conference Stats

    Offense
Points Per Game: 32.3 (ACC Rank: 2)
    Rushing Yards: 114 (10)
    Passing Yards: 283.6 (1)
    Total Offense: 397.6 (4)

    Defense
Points Per Game: 23.8 (ACC Rank: 6)
    High: 41
    Low: 3
Rushing Yards: 122.5 (ACC Rank: 4)
    Passing Yards: 216.0 (6)
    Total Defense: 338.5 (3)

    Turnovers
    Offense: 4 fumbles, 11 interceptions, 15 total
    Defense: 8 fumbles, 5 interceptions, 13 total
    Turnover Margin: -2

So VaWolf was right, the OOC numbers really do skew the stats. Our conference defense and turnover margin looked a LOT better this year compared to last year. We wanted improvement, and it looks like we pretty much saw that happen across the board this year, especially in conference.
