[8:45 update] It’s Official – Wolfpack vs Mountaineers in Orlando

It’s official.

This will be the third time the Wolfpack and Mountaineers have faced each other in a postseason bowl game. On Dec. 29, 1972, at the end of Lou Holtz’s first season at NC State, the Wolfpack throttled the Mountaineers, 49-12, for the biggest postseason margin of victory in school history. On Dec. 31, 1975, in the final game for both Holtz and West Virginia coach Bobby Bowden at their respective schools, the Mountaineers took a 13-10 victory.

NC State’s series with the Mountaineers consists nine games, dating back to 1914, when the school was still known as the North Carolina School of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (NC A&M). The Aggies won the inaugural game against West Virginia, 26-13. But the Mountaineers own a slim 4-5 all-time record in the series.

According to Florida Citrus Sports Committee, the teams for Champs Sports Bowl have been selected but won’t be revealed until 8:30pm tonight.  I don’t have any clue why.  We will keep this updated throughout the afternoon, but bowl destinations are coming into focus this afternoon and we haven’t heard anything that concerns us or differs from the confidence we expressed in this morning’s entry.

To the contrary, we are ready to go live with our projections in which we have very strong confidence —

Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech

Chik Fil A Bowl: Florida State

Champs Bowl: NC State vs West Virginia

Sun Bowl: Miami vs Notre Dame

Meineke Car Care: Clemson vs South Florida

Music City Bowl: North Carolina vs Mississippi State or Tennessee

Military Bowl: Maryland vs East Carolina

Independence Bowl: Georgia Tech

Fight Hunger Bowl: Boston College

Stay tuned to SFN and this entry for more.

4:30pm

Reminder for you to follow our Twitter Feed available here.

The afternoon has evolved to support SFN’s bowl projections and things are becoming very clear with the following two developments:

(1) As expected, Miami will tackle Notre Dame in the Sun Bowl (Link) re-confirming a match-up of NC State vs West Virginia in the Champs Bowl.

(2) Maryland is finalized in the Military Bowl vs East Carolina.

Additionally, UNC’s bowl announcement is expected to come around 5:30pm. Will be interesting if they get marquee ‘name’ in Tennessee, or if they get a tougher draw in Mississippi State.

6:30pm

The Chik Fil A Bowl had previously announced they would take the loser of the ACC Championship Game, thereby giving the Wolfpack no shot at playing in Atlanta. They have selected South Carolina to battle Florida State. (Link) It became official this evening. (Link)

The Charleston Daily Mail is reporting that West Virginia has accepted their invitation to play in Orlando:

WVU accepted an invitation to the Champs Sports Bowl on Sunday, according to multiple sources. An announcement was to be made by Florida Citrus Sports, the organizing body in charge of the Champs Sports Bowl, later in the night.

Now No. 21 in the coaches’ poll and No. 22 in the Associates press poll, WVU is expected to play North Carolina State at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

So, based on what we know from all of the other bowl selections, there is no other place for NC State play other than the Champs Bowl in Orlando.

Congratulations Wolfpack!

Important Note:
Our readers often ask us how they can help SFN? and we rarely have anything to ask. Well, today we have found a way you can help!

Anyone going to show up at 7pm on the 28th in the RBC Center?

Renting a car from up here would be great. Preferably an SUV or a van.

You can stop wherever you need to:

    South of the Border (A#1!!!)
    Hardeeville, SC (A#2!!!!)
    Savannah
    Jacksonville
    St. Augustine
    Daytona

It’s a good drive, seriously. I didn’t want to go after our laid egg last week but I’m pumped now.

Who cares about 12/28 at RBC? Meaningless game vs Alabama A&M …part of the Sidney Lowe farewell tour…which I wish could be abbreviated.

To be honest, having a bowl game in Florida can’t be too bad.
Orlando in December is way better than Memphis or Buffalo!

WVU is a good football program that has a lot of media attention; a W or at least a good showing will improve the exposure NCSU has and will help in recruiting.

My son graduates from Dub-V in two weeks. This should be fun.

“Does anyone else think it’s completely ridiculous that the college football bowl season stretched into mid-January now?” – That can’t be true. Too much time taken from academics is one of the main reasons we can’t have a playoff system.

booked my hotel through hotelplanner.com and got the Sonesta for 52/night. It’s only 1.9 mi from the stadium!

    Thanks WULF!
I just reserved as well, that is by far the least expensive nicest hotel I’ve seen. I am going to cancel my reservation for the Orlando Airport Embassy suites @ 125 a night!

🙂 I want to see that hotel PACKED! 🙂

I am reconsidering Orlando. Originally said I absolutely would not after Md game, but since I was able to sell my ACCCG tickets last minute, not quite as pissed. The 28th is pretty ***** with the time off I orginally requested for the holidays. Oh well.

Very small correction: ’72 Peach Bowl was 49-13.

I wonder how hard/expensive it is to get tickets normally, aka not through State. I figure since the game likely won’t sell out it won’t be too hard.

Not sure where to put this but I am sure others are looking as well:

If you want to purchase bowl patches which give you free admission to the Best Buy Fan zone before the game and other local discounts, they can be purchased from the fcsports.com website under the ‘fan zone’ section.

There are lots of hotel options and the one WULF found seems to be a great deal. There are lots of restaurants downtown within walking distance of the Sonesta.

Another accommodation option is to look at vrbo.com or places like it.
When we went to Orlando last October to visit theme parks we found a great 2 BD 2 BA for my family and grandparents.
