2010 Champs Sports Bowl Champions

Congratulations to NC State Head Football Coach, Tom O’Brien for winning his 100th game tonight as the Wolfpack defeated the #22 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers to win the 2010 Champs Sports Bowl.

NC State finishes the season 9-4, tying the second most amount of wins in school history.

(The Associated Press recap states “Only the 2002 team that went 11-3, led by Philip Rivers, had won at least nine games.” However, this is incorrect, as the Pack have won nine games now a total of nine times: 1967, ’74, ’75, ’78, ’91, ’92, ’94, 2002, ’10.)

In a point to prove that God really does care — Nate Irving sacked the quarterback and caused a fumble on his last collegiate play. I hope he knows how much we all love him for his character as well as his play.

Let’s look forward to parlaying this momentum and positive national attention into some strong recruiting gains in the last month before signing day.

I’m already beginning to miss Nate Irving.

Great win to end a great season. Glad to see Nate go out with a bang. Also congrats to WVU on a good season. Now get on your pack mule and get the hell back home! HOW BOUT THAT WOLFPACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Missed much of the game tonight. And as tends to happen when I miss big chunks of our game, we win. I really take it kind of personally. But hey, my 3 year old had a good birthday and I was singing for him when I put him to sleep.

I heard there was a pretty emotional embrace w/ Nate Irving right after the game.

    Perfect night.

Nate Irving got a sack of the QB and caused a fumble on his last collegiate play.

I have declared myself a TOB homer.

    I remain as such.

Next year is a complete wildcard.

    That is all.

Wow, so much for getting steamrolled. Sure am glad I was wrong. Congratulations team, and thanks for such a memorable season.

Offensive line has to get better. Only way Glennon can be successful enough to win enough next year.

  9. Phang 12/28/2010 at 10:50 PM #

Second highest win total in the HISTORY of NC State!

  10. GAWolf 12/28/2010 at 10:55 PM #

And Russell Wilson’s likely last TD pass was after running circles around the defense before finding Jarvis Williams in the endzone.

How long till we hear the first peep of “PARADE” from Tarheel Fan?

A great game, and one we should be proud of. I still feel many of our breaks were so incredibly lucky and the unique skillset of Wilson was a deciding factor. If O’Brien can follow this season up with another decent bowl berth, I may cross over. Until then, great job Tom and good season. Now capitalize on this victory, get on the recruiting trail and start acting like the coach that some people keep telling me you are. Hell of a game!

I disagree somewhat, Statefans. A QB who quickly runs through progressions can have enough time behind our line. RW just doesn’t seem to do that unless he’s on the run. When he stays in the pocket he seems to key, watch, release. If Glennon can move through his receivers relatively quickly, he can be successful behind the o-line TOB is building here.

    ^^^how awesome is that.

    Congrats on a great season.
    Observations on Champs Bowl:
    – WVa played like dogs, especially in the 2nd half, we should have won 48-7
    – the WVa AD, Luck, makes enough that he could have some cosmetic denistry done….then again, it is WVa
    – Nate looked pretty dapper with those colored beads in his hair

Seriously, you will be missed Nate.

On the last TD, it appeared Wilson was throwing to the player in the back of the end zone and Jarvis Williams cut across and intercepted it…

Was the other player the one that may have gone out of the end zone and back in? I couldn’t tell from the replays…

In any event, great interception!! But if the player wasn’t out of the end zone, I’ll bet he’s giving Jarvis hell for stealing his TD!!

Gritty tough game and the Pack ended up with more big plays in favor. Somehow fitting that Wilson’s last pass was what it was and the Nate’s last play was a big one.

While technically true, the second-highest win total is somewhat misleading, because we’ve won nine games now a total of nine times: 1967, 74, 75, 78, 91, 92, 94, 2002, 10.

Myabe Luck son, the Heisman trophy candidate, will give his dad a new set of pearlies for Christmas next year. If I were Coach Stewart, I would be giving serious consideration to removing some of them next year after I finish my Lame Duck coaching assignment. I know WAY too much about how the coaching scenario played out at WVU.

Of course, this IS WVU….the school where the fans BURNED crosses and vandalized Rich Rodriquez’s house and he moved his family out for their personal safety.

I am from the foothills of NC and I don’t like the sterotypical comments about inbreeding…..but in some cases, there may be some anetodial evidence that certain members of the gene pool should be removed and NOT allowed to procreate.

Jarvis Williams “picking off” the pass that would NOT have been a touchdown if Owen Spencer had caught it was probably the highlight of the game.

WHAT A GAME….and Sid actually found a jug of Chemistry under his tree and passed it around to the team. I hope they did not drink too much and saved some for the rest of the season.

    GO PACK

Stick, I agree, the ball was thrown to #13 who had stepped out of the back (unknown to RW and maybe the kid too) of the endzone thus couldn’t be the 1st to touch the ball. Fortunately Javis made sure it didn’t matter!

  20. wufpup76 12/28/2010 at 11:13 PM #

    Yay!

    A great day!

Thanks team, Nate, Russell, Jarvis, Owen – everyone for a great turnaround this season and a great sendoff. So happy our seniors (and Russell if he is leaving) could go out like that.

I have trouble believing any Big East team was ranked at any point this season – no disrespect intended to WVu, but wow. But that doesn’t take away from a great win!

    Go State!

  21. ADVENTUROO 12/28/2010 at 11:14 PM #

    HighStick,

Yes, Spencer had gone out of bounds. If he had caught it, then it would NOT have been a touchdown. I don’t know if Jarvis Williams knew that or just saw the ball coming and let his reflexes and instincts take over.

  22. StateFans 12/28/2010 at 11:25 PM #

Joe Ovies had a great tweet when Jarvis ‘intercepted’ that TD pass to Spencer:

“Nice of Jarvis Williams to spare Owen Spencer the agony of another dropped pass in the endzone.”

  23. StateFans 12/28/2010 at 11:26 PM #

GAWolf…I like those comments and accept your point. Will also be helped by an improved running game. It just HAS to get better.

  24. choppack1 12/28/2010 at 11:28 PM #

Is it me or is Davis probably our most sure-handed receiver? We were fortunate the drops didn’t kill us – but ultimately our guys made more plays than they did – and as usually happens w/ teams w/ similar skill level – the team that made the most plays won.

Hey – great game by defensive and staff today.

As for Glennon – it will be interesting to see what he does. He’ll be able to see a lot of stuff RW wasn’t able to see.

Thanks Nate, Seniors, Russ! Team win today…we were better prepared and played with intensity for 4 quarters. Defense was very good. Still trying to forget the close losses this year, but, its nice to finish on strong note. Maybe TOBs program has turned the corner. I’m enjoying today and expecting an ACC Title in ’11.
