The Symmetry of Loserdom

I remember sitting in Carter-Finley on Philip Rivers’ Senior Day. State was choking against Maryland, and with under three minutes to play, the Terps missed what would have been the game tying extra point. I swear to God, I turned immediately to my family and said “Great, now we will lose in regulation.” Which we most certainly did.

State went on to beat a comically inept Kansas team in a meaningless minor bowl game, but what could have been a special (or at least very good) season had slipped away. And that was pretty much it for the Chuck Amato era. The window had slammed shut, and nothing epitomized the floundering to come better than that game against Maryland.

Flash forward to today. A game with the Atlantic Division title on the line for the Pack. A game that we only needed to win because of Tom O’Brien’s inexplicable decision to punt late against Clemson (after numerous blown opportunities to put the Tiggers away). A mediocre opponent with nothing to play for, whose spirit should have been crushed after finding themselves in an early 14-0 hole.

Of course our sphincters slammed shut. Of course we spit the bit. Of course we allowed Maryland to go on a 38-3 run and win the game. Of course we pissed away a “once in a generation” opportunity for a special season. We are NC State. That’s just how we roll.

Tom O’Brien proved his skeptics right. He can’t win the big one. He does get tight in pressure situations. He is a “football Sendek.” At least he probably won’t get a parade for matching Amato’s high water mark (5-3 in conference play). We’ve learned that much from past experience, one would hope.

Just like that chilly fall afternoon when Rivers threw his last home pass – Russell Wilson threw his last ACC pass today. And just like I strongly felt then, I feel it now – the window has slammed shut. It’s not going to happen for NC State under Tom O’Brien. Unless the “it” you are looking for is an 8-win season and a minor bowl bid. Blech.

One other thought on NC State “blowing it’s opportunity at a championship”.

Let’s all see how the “NC State of the SEC” performs against Auburn next weekend. I will stand corrected if Spurrier is able to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but I think the 8-0 caliber team (Auburn or VT) will easily handle the 5-3 caliber team (USC or NCSU) 9 times out of 10.

If Auburn wins by 3+ TDs like I think they will, I’ll wait to hear from my USC friends how satisfying it was to “just make it to the big game” before being too disappointed that NC State doesn’t get to be VT’s sacrificial lamb.

Through all the disappointment of losing to Maryland, we should be proud of the progress the football program has made under TOB. He is developing depth and recruiting players with character. While Amato may have recruited more talented players, I think we are all much happier with the program now than then. When TOB decides to retire, his successor (is Bill Cowher still available?) will inherit a program on solid footing. Should Mr. Cowher decide to coach at his alma mater, what recruit would not want to play for a Super Bowl champion coach? At that time, the ACC championships will happen with regularity. I think TOB knew what kind of shape the program was in when he took over, accepted the challenge and has made good progress. Patience is a virtue.

Wolfpackacct – Regarding “patience” – I don’t know if that’s applicable here. I hear what you are saying, but there is no guarantee that we will ever be a regular in the ACCCG even if TOB goes 5-3 or 6-2 every year.

Right now, I’m all about progress and getting this program pointed in the right direction. I think we did that this year. We certainly blew some opportunities – though I think we had better shots at Clemson and playing VaTech than we did vs. UMd.

This season will ultimately be one of 3 things:
    1) TOB’s high water he only reaches once (read: Chuck Amato) and is never able to equal or surpass.

    2) the high water mark he hits a couple of times, but never surpasses (read BC)

    3) the springboard to creating the kind of program that TOB and NC State fans all want.

Being familiar as I am w/ his book of work, I think 1 or 2 is most likely. And quite frankly, I’m not afraid to admit, that I’d take #2, as I think it could position us to being the a special football program if the administration handles it correctly.

The last 2 games we have held our opponents to NEGATIVE rushing yards. When was the last time that has ever happened?

The problem is we made no adjustmets, played the soft zone on pass D, and LET UMD have their way. Much of the time, Davis was the only receiver in the area and our zone still did not cover him. If there are 3 receivers in an area, the zone stays a zone, but when only 1 is there, the DB’s need to tighten up.

Our OL was awful – say what you want about Wilson, but he had no time to throw on many occasions, and when he did, our receivers let him down. My only complaint really with RW was even thinking of throwing to #6.

I did think RW played well. We seem to put in him some difficult situations.

patientwuf – I agree. His % were down the last 2 games (and 2 of the last 3) – but in the Clemson and UMd game, our receivers had some drops that could have changed the outcome.

Also, his run in the UNC game was one of 3 plays IMHO, that changed the complexion of that game.

Still, I was disappointed w/ some of his decision making in the VaTech, ECU and Clemson games.

Mike – I can’t attribute some of these problems to soft zones. I do attribute a lot of it to having linebackers in pass coverage too often. The rushing #s tell me that we’re executing pretty much perfectly when a team tries to run the ball. If we can use the extra practice and next year to improve on the passing game, we’ll be all right.

Keep in mind, TOB wants play the same D as he did at BC. BC plays pretty much exclusively zone – and here’s BC’s passing #s the last 5 years:

    Passing rating/YPA:
    2010: 22nd YPA: 8th
    2009: 39th YPA: 36th
    2008: 7th YPA: 7th
    2007: 23rd YPA: 25th
    2006: 19th, YPA: 7th

The problem with any defensive analysis vis a vis TOB is we do not have his DC he had while at BC. We have Mike Archer. Need I say more.

“I’m not saying it’s time to fire TOB, but the status quo won’t do.”

Chopack, I was refering to the current crop of assistant coaches not the overall win loss record for this year. We caught some breaks and won a couple of games we maybe shouldn’t have. Maybe it’s just me but I can’t excuse all of the head scratching decisions because on paper we had one of our best seasons in a long time. The way the season unfolded, I didn’t see systematic progress and therefore don’t have great confidence that we’ll see equal or better success next year. As they say in the market, past performance (by itself) is no indicator of future success. I’d like to be able to say I have confidence in TOB’s team of coaches. At this point, I can’t.

I expect the football program to improve. I think that over the next few years State will have a very good running game. I am looking forward to NCState playing in a decent bowl game and better ones in the future. Do I wish State had done better this season, of course. I don’t consider this to be a loser season not after some of the season’s we have had here recently.

All you people are so damn negative on here about TOB….You people forget we were 5-7 last season….coming into the year with no RB with experience on the Two Deep depth chart….Losing almost our entire DLine from ’09….This season has been a HUGE improvement especially since we lost so much from last season and are now 8-4. This years seniors were Freshman when TOB came to N.C. State. He finally has a team of all guys his coaches have recruited. TOB is a great coach and the team will continue to improve as they learn how to win the close game even after Russell is gone. I’ll be in ORLANDO GO PACK!
