Tarantini ‘Retires’

Ain’t that a kick in the head? (circa 2006)

Debbie Yow ROCKS.

More to come. In the interim, we’ve got some on the SFN Twitter feed and you can always look back to the George Tarantini ‘Tag’ archive.

Also, you should look back to this classic for some background.

Discussion on the message boards happening here.

I followed his career though the 80’s to today. As much as he was successful back then he was equally awful the last 15 years or so. This is several years late but glad it was done. In all fairness though his teams from 1985 or so to 1991 were pretty good.

I played for him in 1989 when there were Spring “tryouts.” (There were seven openings for the fall, and there were seven scholarship players coming in.) I had a blast, though I knew I was over my head. I got to play with Henry Gueterrez (4 time all american), Tab Ramos (US National team mid fielder, who was there to work out, etc.)

The team was great then — they made it to the final four the following year losing to UCLA in a shoot out. And he was a good coach and good recruiter then, too. I really don’t know what happened, but it has been a sad many years, and amazing that it took so long to make a change.

The accountability era has begun in earnest. I like that she apparently put TOB and Lowe on notice this summer, too.

This is outstanding! Thank you Debbie Yow. Maybe State will actually recruit some of our local soccer talent here in the Raleigh area.

Outstanding it could not have come too soon.

Thank you Debbie Yow. Continue cleaning the spider webs out of the Ath.
    Dept.

By the way go to coachoftheyear.com. This is a Liberty Mutual coach of the year voting for football coach of the year.

Currently TOB is in 10th place barely and two spots behind Butchy.
Lets get the vote out so at least BMFD doesnt stay ahead of TOB.

If you look at the roster there are 18 players from NC. Of that 13 are from Durham, Apex, Cary, Raleigh and Wake Forest. I have played soccer for thirty-five years in the Raleigh area. Raleigh has good talent but the next coach needs to recruit more on a national level. California, Florida and Texas.

Thank you Debbie Yow! You really do rock!

^ I totally agree that it would be great for the next coach to have ties into another big soccer market. The NC club teams will send players to Raleigh regardless of who the coach is. (higher level players may consider ncsu with Tarantini gone) CA, FL, TX have more talent for sure, although NC is somewhere in that second tier.

^^^seanb742, was David Allred the goalkeeper during that time? The guys from the “good teams” that came back to visit the team would say “we knew we were good and just ignored Tarantini”. Nice vote of confidence from his key players huh?

Ahh, yes. Tab Ramos. Perhaps the second best all around student athlete ever to wear the red and white. Not to be mistaken for Tab Thacker, who was a great NCSU sports individual (intentionally did NOT use the word “athlete”) in his own right. I do love re-living the 80’s.

Was Tarantini a better coach back then? He had some very, very good teams, no doubt. But was his coaching significantly different? Or did the game pass him by, as happens with many coaches, and he was no longer able to bring in top level talent?

Regardless, am glad to hear that yet again Debbie Yow is not afraid to pull the trigger on something that she believes will improve the NCSU athletics dept.

I never thought I’d say this about any woman who was not my mother or my wife, but I really, really, really love that woman.

    One down, one to go.

    About time!
George was a very good coach back when; but he should have known to retire before all this bad-vibe wave hits him.
Good Luck to him, and hope the Pack gets a coach to lead them to the next steps.

I had a good friend back in my State years that played for and coached with Tarrantinni. He used to tell me back in those days that he would go visit family back in Argentina (or wherever he was from ) and claim he was on a recruiting trip on State’s dime.
He would spend weeks down there hanging (and drinking) with family, while not doing crap to help State get better, at our expense.
He was a joke. Good riddance.
    Great job Yow!

Tis quite the sketchy picture in the N&O this morning, for sure.

@sockerne1 I am 99% sure David Allred was the keeper… And looking at his soccer camp bio it says goalkeeper of the final four team, which was 1990. I played in the spring of 89… I thought they made it to the final four that fall, not 1990, but that was a long long time ago.

I do know for certain that Kirk Peat was one of the starting defenders back then, but don’t recall any other names.

I followed this team while I was in school from ’97 to ’01. The team was nothing less than a disgrace. I remember a couple of games where players would fight with each other on the field about how they shouldn’t pass to them because they’ll just lose it. A game against High Point with State players laughing and making fun of the other team after going up early in the game (that game ended in a tie). And then the Shaker Asad era where Tarantini would just cheer for Shaker to take the ball all the way himself and to not pass. After winning one ACC game in ’99, he went three years without winning an ACC game. This is long over due.

Maryland won a national championship with Yow as AD. I hope she finds a coach that can bring one to State.

I wonder how Chelsea’s new affiliation with CASL will affect the local talent. I am sure that any top player coming up through CASL will be at least given the opportunity to get into Chelsea’s youth system over in England, and let’s be honest, that’s a great place to go learn the game and maybe move into the Premiership.

  18. sockerne1 11/18/2010 at 2:13 PM #

^i’m sure a few will have an opportunity to get into the Chelsea youth system….but the players with that kind of ability/potential have not been considering NCSU anyways.
