Shocker!!!! Thorp says ‘no evidence’ Butch knew [2:40pm Update]

Full link.

UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp said this morning that while he still has questions about why Butch Davis didn’t know more about questionable behavior by his football players, the football coach didn’t play a role in anything under investigation by the NCAA.

“We don’t have any evidence that Coach Davis knew about or took part in any of the things that happened,” Thorp said Thursday in a meeting of a committee of the UNC system’s Board of Governors, which sets policy for all public universities including Carolina.

Another way of positioning this development would be to take the words directly from packplantpath in this message board thread:

“UNC officials have confirmed that football coach Chief Butch “MF” Davis is incompetent and had no idea that his star players were accepting improper benefits from agents. In addition, in no way did he know that his personally hired tutor for his son was also assisting football players with their classwork.”

2:40pm Update
WTVD’s Mark Armstrong has tweeted an interesting equivocation from ‘Young Holden’…

Interesting from Thorp on Butch. Asked directly, Thorp: ‘I didn’t say he didn’t know, I said there’s no evidence he knew.’

Another tweet of note was this one from SFN:

Guess who else genuinely didn’t know — Jim Valvano. What was the UNC & BOG stance on that? UNC’s transgressions dwarf what V didn’t know.

UNC Scandal

    Hung,

That’s a good point in regard to Blake’s “settlement”. It would seem that $75K is a relatively low number for absolute silence unless the same mysterious people that are paying for jewelry and lifting up the carpet are also supplying Blake with his hush fund.

It’ll be interesting to see how Michigan’s penalty impacts the UNC situation…

Not knowing does not mean the same thing as “its your responsibility to know”. It is my hope that they get “what they deserve” from the NCAA and are pushed to the bottom of the ACC for the next 25 years just like the basketball program at NC State under Valvano…..what goes around comes around.

maybe 75k was negotiated when Blake signed on.

“There’s one tarhole bringing up the point shaving scandal and saying we ought to read about our schools sordid past before laughing and pointing fingers.”

That is too funny. What morons. Don’t those idiots know that it was a Tarhole player that was the ring leader and set the whole thing up!

I posted this elsewhere…..I think it says it all…

Two Different N&O HEADLINES to CONSIDER…..

Coach Davis is CLUELESS about what his players are doing. UNC pledges support to Coach and will help him resotre dignity to their Football program.

    OR

Coach Valvano is CLUELESS about what his players are doing. NCSU must rectify this immediately and find new Coach to restore dignity to their Basketball program.

By JOVE….I think that I fully understand now…..I now feel ENLIGHTENED. Actually, my head aches from trying to follow this mess. Maybe Ch T is a bit more cagey with the “evidence” comment. Who knows….I CERTAINLY hope so.

A poster in another blog had speculated that the UNC band will have a stirring rendition of “Stand By Your Man” at the next home game and that they will also perforrm “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad”. Jennifer Wiley, who is purported to be pursuing a musical career will make her debut and that the lyrics have been customized especially for the UNC crowd. Royalty arrangement will be finalized within the next few days…. You gotta LOVE IT…..

I read the sanctions against UM. But even though RichRod dodged the compliance issue, I believe he’s toast come November. Any Michigan coach who finishes near the bottom of the Big Ten, loses badly to OSU for 3 straight seasons, can’t make a bowl game, and whose defense is giving up points in boatloads, isn’t going to hang around long, probation or not. When UM gave Indiana 35 first downs and barely won, the writing was on the wall. Like most UM students there now, my son is selling his football tickets to the Illinois game due to lack of interest anymore.

From the ESPN Michigan State Article:

“Paul Dee, the chairman of the Division I infractions committee, compared Rodriguez to the captain of a ship.

‘Some of the things that did occur did not get all the way to the coach,’ Dee said. ‘But ultimately, the coach bears a responsibility for the program.'”

At least someone around here seems to understand that just because you’re at the top, “stuff” doesn’t always roll down hill…

CBS Sports is reporting that Auburn QB and Heisman front runner Cam Newton is being investigated by the NCAA.

We should make the Wake Forrest game “Plausible Alibi Day” at Carter-Finley. Bring a new or gently used plausible alibi to be donated to the UNC-Ch athletic department. They are running out over there.

Wolf74, No, they do not know “anything” about the point shaving scandal. Don’t you realized that they rewrote that part out of history and most of them don’t read anything that would are suggest that they were implicated.

I can’t remember the whole story, but somehow my Mom(a nurse) met Lou Brown in the hospital when I was in high school. She asked him what he did and responded “I fix basketball games”. She didn’t understand it, but I picked up on it really quick when she told me about it.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford – the one who went to UNC and served as their Athletic Director – comes out in public and takes a hard stand on FSU’s Women’s Soccer Coach for his decision to rest his starters during the ACC Tournament in preparation for the NCAA Tournament :

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/11/…t-florida.html

Yet Swofford has yet to say a peep about the UNC debacle…

So, it’s against the rules to manage your team and players, but it’s totally OK to be clueless about anything going on in your program, including hiring an agent as your Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, allowing your players to take agent-sponsored trips all over the country, accepting expensive jewelry from said agents, and having a Coach-paid tutor submit classwork for them ?

Whoo Boy – talk about hypocrisy ! John Swofford should be escorted from office today, without delay. He’s a total embarrassment to the ACC (except his beloved cheating alma mater, of course).

“in no way did he know that his personally hired tutor for his son was also assisting football players with their classwork.”

Impressive how quiet that tutor was, despite spending quite a bit of time around the Davis family. She must have gotten an ulcer keeping it under her belt that she was tutoring the players on HIS football team.

I realize this is not evidence or proof of anything, but do these people really think we were all born yesterday?

I am having fun over there at WRAL along with TruthBKnown. There are actually some starting to see the light, but many are still completely clueless.

That’s you? Call me TBK! 🙂

    THANK GAWD!!!!
I was concerned that BD’s friend of 30 years had tipped Butch off or something. Or maybe the tutor, er uh academic coach, or whatever.
    Thank goodness he wasn’t involved.

“Wonder how much silence 75K is buying?”
That’s not enough to move to Brazil and live the rest of your life
