Shocker!!!! Thorp says ‘no evidence’ Butch knew [2:40pm Update]

Full link.

UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp said this morning that while he still has questions about why Butch Davis didn’t know more about questionable behavior by his football players, the football coach didn’t play a role in anything under investigation by the NCAA.

“We don’t have any evidence that Coach Davis knew about or took part in any of the things that happened,” Thorp said Thursday in a meeting of a committee of the UNC system’s Board of Governors, which sets policy for all public universities including Carolina.

Another way of positioning this development would be to take the words directly from packplantpath in this message board thread:

“UNC officials have confirmed that football coach Chief Butch “MF” Davis is incompetent and had no idea that his star players were accepting improper benefits from agents. In addition, in no way did he know that his personally hired tutor for his son was also assisting football players with their classwork.”

2:40pm Update
WTVD’s Mark Armstrong has tweeted an interesting equivocation from ‘Young Holden’…

Interesting from Thorp on Butch. Asked directly, Thorp: ‘I didn’t say he didn’t know, I said there’s no evidence he knew.’

Another tweet of note was this one from SFN:

Guess who else genuinely didn’t know — Jim Valvano. What was the UNC & BOG stance on that? UNC’s transgressions dwarf what V didn’t know.

UNC Scandal

Still waiting on those phone records to be released. And BMFD knew nothing about the tutor or why she was not kept as a tutor prior to his hiring her, nor did he notice the bling these kids were rockin’ or that Hawkins had previously been kicked off Bunting’s team? He knew nothing about their trips or their training in Cali? I find this all too hard to not know.

UNC can man up now or later. What is done in darkness will be exposed by the light. Davis is a snake. Unc can take care of him now or wait and get bitten again later.

  3. Oldwolf 11/04/2010 at 1:21 PM #

Sounds like an admission of NCAA “Lack of Institutional Control” on Thorp’s part.

  4. primacyone 11/04/2010 at 1:23 PM #

Butch Davis must be the dumbest MF on the planet. Really, is CBMFD that stupid? If Butchy didn’t konw anything about anything, the only dumber person on the planet is Holden Thorpe.

Talk about lowering the value of your degree UNC fans. Your freaking Chancellor is a dumbass. WOW.

At this point, I actually think I say that more from a taxpayer of the state of NC’s view than that of a STATE fan.

you know what- that’s worse to me than admitting that he had “limited” knowledge “after the fact”. As a D1 head coach you should make it your business to know what’s going on in your program. That’s what staff meetings are for- you meet with your staff who are tasked with the responsibility of knowing what’s happening in your building! And it is also funny that everyone else in the coaching community knew that Blake was shady, yet you don’t feel the need to keep a “special” eye on him??? Give me a break!!!!! The spin machine is in full cycle. Who wants to bet that nothing happens to UNC as far as the NCAA is concerned and Butch keeps his job??? If it were NCSU under investigation we would have already gotten the “death penalty”.

  6. rmpackman 11/04/2010 at 1:27 PM #

oh btw, I had a UNC homer try to tell me Sunday that it was all a conspiracy against Butch Davis. Some drivel about the lead investigator being the same one who went after him at Miami. I replied, “You do know that the players have admitted to accepting jewelry and travel- even issued “apologies” for doing so don’t you? You do also know that Carolina “self reported” the academic stuff don’t you?” SILENCE!

  7. Old MacDonald 11/04/2010 at 1:31 PM #

Why are they going “all in” with Butch? They are acting like the guy has actually won there.

  8. Sweet jumper 11/04/2010 at 1:41 PM #

Being able to solve the Rubick’s Cube does not mean you are smart or perceptive. Poulton supported V and was canned.

  9. TheAliasTroll 11/04/2010 at 1:57 PM #

As we’ve seen in the past when they come out with this kind of crap, must be another bombshell about to drop on the UNC program. At this point, it is actually comical how stupid their obvious spin sounds.

  10. packplantpath 11/04/2010 at 2:02 PM #

Alias, hadn’t thought of that. Doesn’t UNC have a history of releasing just a little bit of info on the Thursday before a real story breaks?

  11. burnbarn 11/04/2010 at 2:04 PM #

^ Correct Troll… should be something big released tonight just after 10 so it misses the news cycle for the next morning.

Nor did he know his assistant head coach was taking large sums of money from an agent and also staying in contact with players from other schools.

  12. Alpha Wolf 11/04/2010 at 2:07 PM #

    “or should have known.”

Ignorance really won’t work all that well here.

And it shows a coach not remotely in control of his players and their activities.

If you choose to know nothing, you will know nothing.

  14. packof81 11/04/2010 at 2:45 PM #

Oh yeah. It’s a safe bet another shoe is fixin’ to drop.

    He didn’t know, eh?

This fishy business stinks as high as it goes and so far,

Davis could knock a buzzard off a manure wagon.
    Baddour stinks to blue heaven.
    Thorpe reeks.

Unless the NCAA comes down on them like a ton of bricks, they’ll be drawing some flies themselves.

  15. Old MacDonald 11/04/2010 at 2:48 PM #
‘I didn’t say he didn’t know, I said there’s no evidence he knew.’
WOW! That is a hell of a quote right there.

That can EASILY be read to mean that Thorp thinks that Butch did know.

  16. katymelrose 11/04/2010 at 3:26 PM #

It will be interesting to see how the NCAA comes down on the program and athletics department, because if they don’t hit fairly hard, then I believe they will be showing their own LOIC. Letting UNC and BMFD slide at this point would make their rules simply words on paper that carry very little weight. Much like UNC’s compliance department seems to have been in the recent past.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do not want UNC to get the death penalty. That would punish the entire ACC and I don’t want that at all. However, I do think the NCAA needs to set an example out of this plausible deniability defense. If they don’t, then the only reason for every HC out there in any sport to not hire someone to do all their dirty work for them (and just include hazard pay in their salary for when they get thrown under the bus) is integrity. And I think we’re all jaded enough to know that most of the time winning trumps integrity if there are no repercussions. Calipari, anyone?

  17. 61Packer 11/04/2010 at 3:30 PM #

I think I posted an opinion on here when this all started that UNC would skate free of most if not all of this.

I guess if OJ can walk, so can BMFD. On hot water, it appears.

  18. tjfoose1 11/04/2010 at 3:31 PM #

“Why are they going “all in” with Butch?”

Because Butch won’t be going down alone.

  19. Hungwolf 11/04/2010 at 4:03 PM #

Sounds like carefully wording. Lack of “Evidence” means we do not have legal gounds to terminate him. He knew but we haven’t proven it yet means, Davis will sue the crap out of us and blow the lid off everyone and get our Bball program in NCAA trouble also if we can his ass without having rock solid proof!

Sounds like Davis got Baddour and Thorpe by the short hairs. And seasoned business owners and the BOG should have read that loud and clear. BOG most likely told Thorpe in private, get the proof and can his ass end of the year and get him out of Chapel Hill and away from the Bball program.

  20. JeremyH 11/04/2010 at 4:03 PM #

and Thorp can stand by that claim until the NCAA proves otherwise.

  21. packof81 11/04/2010 at 4:12 PM #

Look at the WRAL story. Read some of the posts by tarhole fans. mmmmm mmmmph.

There’s one tarhole bringing up the point shaving scandal and saying we ought to read about our schools sordid past before laughing and pointing fingers.

  22. highstick 11/04/2010 at 4:45 PM #

They conveniently ignore that UNC was involved in point shaving too…LOU BROWN sure didn’t play for State!

  23. Mike 11/04/2010 at 4:46 PM #

I am having fun over there at WRAL along with TruthBKnown. There are actually some starting to see the light, but many are still completely clueless.

  24. Bowlpack 11/04/2010 at 5:22 PM #

I too have found myself enjoying the lack of rationale employed by the deluded, but hopeful UNC crowd over at the WRAL site. It’s just easy picking…

  25. Hungwolf 11/04/2010 at 5:26 PM #

Told some long time Brown sason ticket holders about Butch. They said he’s a jerk and about had a staff revolt due to him being overbearing and a control freak. They find it hard to believe given his management style in Cleveland that he would not know what was going on in his program.

Of course if you UNC and you want to distant the crap from the head coach, AD, and Adminsitration you pay off and remove the person that would be the liason between the rest of the staff and the players to the head coach and AD. That would be the associate head coach, one Mr. Blake. Wonder how much silence 75K is buying?
