Philip Rivers is Peter King’s MVP

Last week we highlighted the record setting season that Philip Rivers is putting together. (Click here)

Rivers 2,649 yards are the most ever by an NFL quarterback in the first eight games of a season. Who did he pass? Now behind him is former Chargers QB, and Hall of Fame inductee, Dan Fouts whose old mark of 2,580 was set in 1982.

People are noticing – ‘My MVP plays for a losing team’

I’d give my MVP nod to Rivers over Peyton Manning and Tom Brady right now — though it’s razor-thin — because Rivers has had to deal with injuries the same way Manning has, and he’s had to deal with a new cast of receivers the way Brady has. And he’s had to do it while the historically bad Chargers special-teams have consistently put the team in holes that have been very difficult to dig out of. But he’s dug out of four, and nearly out of a couple of others. He’s thrown for 2,944 yards through nine games, 357 more than any other quarterback. His 8.95 yards-per-attempt is three-quarters of a yard better than any other passer, while his 19 touchdown passes lead Brees by one.

The MVP race should be interesting, especially if Rivers continues on pace to break Dan Marino’s passing-yards record for a season, and especially if the Chargers get some receivers healthy and make a run at the division title in the second half of the season. Rivers hasn’t won one yet, and there’s a reason: His competition is outstanding, as it will be this year.

He’s just a winner. Period. He makes people around him better.

“He makes people around him better.”

    ^Definitely. That’s the key.

Well, if Peter King endorses him, he’s a lock! What a douche!…King that is. I am glad people are recognizing Rivers play though, and I do agree he is playing better than anyone in the league right now. Most accurate passer, especially on long throws, IMO. I still don’t understand how anyone can have Brady in their top three, but whatever. Must be NE’s record keeping him in the mix…? I’m surprised King doesn’t have Brett Favre as his front-runner, considering the gigantic man-crush he has on Favre.

No matter how good his numbers, the MVP will go to someone on a winning football team. PR does make people around him better. But he can’t overcome by himself injuries, poor personnel decisions and bad coaching. Still, it would be cool to see him get the record.

Philip Rivers has always been the best Quarterback that NO ONE gives any credit. It is a shame! He has to be getting sick of being one of the best players on the field any given week, but not getting the recognition and wins he deserves. It happened at State with a bad defense and special teams; now it is happening with the Chargers. He had a Heisman caliber year both his Junior and Senior campaigns, but was not even given a shot in New York. He is having probably the best season by any NFL quarterback, but will not get a nod for MVP due to TERRIBLE special teams and coaching.

Those first 4 Amato years would have been horrible without him. Even then his best record in any season vs D1 opponents was 8-3.

He’s a fierce talented competitor. If he ever get to a superbowl he will be in the hall of fame.

As a side note, Philip wanted to play for the Bears in 4th grade. Oh, the irony.

“No matter how good his numbers, the MVP will go to someone on a winning football team.”

Agreed. However, the Chargers will likely have a winning team by the end of the season. This is a pattern for the Chargers – start slow, finish strong. In his career, Rivers is 13-5 in November and 18-0 in December.

Here’s another amazing fact. When Vincent Jackson catches his first pass this season, he will be the 15th player on the Chargers to catch at least one pass this year. Consider Peyton Manning for comparison, since the Colts, like the Chargers, have been hit hard by injuries to offensive skill players. The Colts currently have “only” 11 players who have caught a pass this year.

Entering the season, the Chargers’ top 4 WRs were Jackson, Floyd, Naanee, and Davis. All of them along with All Pro Gates missed last week’s game, but Rivers still threw for 305 yards and 4 TDs. IMO he is the only QB in the NFL on Peyton Manning’s level.

^ What Tau said, the Bolts will be .500 or better by year’s end.
On PTI yesterday they were asking who would you take between Rivers and Vick. They were basically at a 50/50 toss up but Corn took Vick.
Begs the question, if Vick keeps playing like he’s possesed is he even considered in the MVP conversation?
It could be the comeback of the decade or it could be toxic and the NFL won’t touch it.

Rivers is the only reason I care about the Chargers.
