N & O cramps Butch’s style (Updated 10:35am)

If you have any Tar Heel friends, then you have noticed by now how delusional they are regarding the impending sanctions.  You have most certainly heard their delusional talking points that “nothing is going to happen to us because we have been so co-operative with the NCAA.” Which is funny on many levels because they haven’t been remotely cooperative with the press or anyone else who has asked a question…and, because NC State was so cooperative with NCAA investigators in the late 1980s that the head of the NCAA’s investigative team wrote an unprecedented letter that, in part, highlighted the environment of access and openness that Jim Valvano and NC State created. Out of curiosity…did the NCAA take it easy on NC State for all of that cooperation?

Damn facts and precedent! But, I digress.

As we highlighted just the other day, Butch Davis (and staff) continue to lie tell both recruits and alumni that nothing is going to happen to UNC-CH in this NCAA investigation. In the absence of common sense and appropriate media coverage they could get away with it. But today the N & O helped the pursuit of truth with a few articles that discuss and analyze the impending sanctions. Hopefully every recruit in the country gets multiple copies of this article and is forced to listen and think about it as opposed to drinking Butch’s kool-aid blindly.

This is the main article.  My favorite quote is:

The NCAA’s next move, though, will be to sift through the violations and determine penalties. And UNC could self-impose sanctions in anticipation of NCAA action.

Michael Buckner, a Florida lawyer who advises schools in NCAA probes but is not involved in the UNC situation, said North Carolina can expect stiff sanctions.

“This case is unique, both because of the number of athletes involved and certainly because of the number who have been declared ineligible,” he said.

Neither he nor an NCAA spokeswoman, when contacted Tuesday, could cite examples of schools that had five or more players permanently banned from play.

Of course, anyone who has been following this from the beginning will get a fantastic laugh from this one:

UNC athletic director Dick Baddour said the end is in sight

At least this time he didn’t say ‘the end is in sight…probably by next Friday’ as Butch & Baddour have said for six months now. When will the Tar Heel faithful – or media – ever call them on this!?

The N & O also provided this table explaining the status of the individual players and this list of the individuals missing.

Also, this is a look at what sanctions other programs have received and their violations. For something FANTASTIC and in a similar vein done by this site some time ago, you should really click here.

UNC Scandal

“Sucks for the non-cheating seniors over there, but it be what it be.”

True but certainly they are guilty by association to an extent. It sucks MORE for all the teams they unfairly played (win or lose). It sucks that Jarvis Byrd missed an entire season b/c a cheater who has been permantently disqualified roughed him up after the whistle was blown. It sucks for ACC fans to see hypocrisy at its finest hour. It sucks for the ACC’s image to get a black eye, when all we had against SEC football was our honor. It sucks for opposing recruiters, who spent countless hours on the road away from their families, only to recruit the same kids at a disadvantage. It sucks for the professors at UNC, who might turn out as the the biggest losers of all on the Hill. It sucks for my sister, who has never been condescending to NC State and indeed admires it, has to read negative publicity about her alma mater.

It DOESN’T suck for Butch, DB, or Thorpe who disgust me as they lie through their teetch to grown men, women, and children. It doesn’t suck for any UNC fan who has made even one snide remark about the 74′ or 83′ teams being cheaters. It doesn’t suck for any UNC fan who ever once made contentious remarks about State, or who ever genuinely felt one ounze of superiority. No. It doesn’t suck for them because you reap what you sow. A long as I live, I will never ever ever let this scandal go unforgotten. Every time UNC beats State, in any sport, if one UNC fan makes one remark to me, I’ll just reply that they probably cheated. And whether that is 4 days from now or 40 years from now, I guarantee you, as someone who has endured similar comments, it will sting.

  2. Prowling Woofie 11/17/2010 at 2:22 PM #

That none of the non-cheating players said a word only adds to the feeling that what was going on was status quo. It was UNC ‘business as usual’ for the big-name players to get all the goodies, accept the trips, money and jewelry, cheat in their classes, and get fringe benefits from the ‘tutors’…

Although, if the head of recruiting (and associate head coach) is an agent/agent’s runner, I could see a legitimate argument being made that all recruits under his watch are tainted by association.

Why are we to assume if he breaks the rules with several, that he’s actually playing by the rules with the others ?

However, if there ARE guys that are legit over there, wouldn’t they feel somewhat abused (or just really stupid?), since they weren’t deemed ‘worthy’ of special perks ? I would think they might just feel jilted enough to speak to an NCAA investigator behind closed doors about what was actually going on.

I guess we’ll find out when Mjöllnir finally falls…

  3. VaWolf82 11/17/2010 at 2:46 PM #

I neither know nor care exactly who knew what. However, I do know that:

    – The ones that broke the rules are currently on the team.
    – At least some of their team mates (and probably coaches) knew and chose to look the other way.
    – Kids currently in high school did nothing wrong (except for growing up UNC fans).

I stand by my statement that it is better to punish the current team over future ones.

As far as Paul Dee goes, he has first hand experience with Butch’s ‘honesty.’ As is documented, Butch played the part of a guy that was staying in Miami, until the dark of night, when he packed his bags and left everyone on that campus (including Paul Dee) holding the proverbial bag.

You know, when Butch was hired, my over-riding feeling was that Butch was going to pull a ‘Mack Brown.’ I thought that he was going to get them to a winning season or two, and then when the money comes knocking, he would be gone. the only problem is that Butch never got them to that point. He was, evidently, buying his way to the top. But, he never made it there before his program was caught. So, my initial thoughts have had to be looked at again, in light of the scandal, and based upon Butch’s known personality traits. One of these traits is that of a dishonest person.

The NFL player that played for Butch in Cleveland, said it all when he outed Butch for lying to his players. He lost that locker room because nobody trusted him. “You know he’s lying, because his lips are moving.” Those are strong statements. Along with everyone at Miami, his players and cohorts in Cleveland have all experienced Butch’s deviant ways.

How does this play out? I’m of the mindset that most NFL teams wouldn’t hire Butch as a Head Coach, because reputation means everything in the league. But, someone might make him a coordinator. So, I really believe that Dickie, Butchie and Thorpe will continue to schmooze the UNC faithful through the end of this year. And, Baddour and Thorpe may really believe that Butch is going to stick it out (ala Paul Dee). But, make no mistake, Butch has ZERO allegiance to UNC. If someone else will give him a high paying job…he’s gone. Most likely, this will leave Baddour and Thorpe behind, holding the bag. And, he will leave the University’s programs, players and supporters to suffer from the sanctions that are unavoidable. Of course, they’ll have to explain why there are going to be sanctions, because they spent all this time saying that there wouldn’t be any. They’ll have to explain why they supported a guy (Butchie) that wrecked their Football Program, their reputation and then left town in the dead of night.

This serves them right. Right now, the only thing keeping Dickie’s support is something (s) that Butch has, that he’s holding over Baddour’s head. Things like this are political. They start out ‘by the book,’ until one party says, “Okay, if you bring me up on these charges, then I’m going to tell everyone about your indiscretions.” That’s how this works.

UNC fans love butch right now, and think that it’s pretty hilarious. Write this down…They won’t love him for long. Those “I support Butch” shirts will be burned in effigy, I promise you.

Scroll down in the comments of BobLee’s article, “Did Carolina Marry a Stripper” and this was his response to my comment:

David Glenn does have his loyal fans. We used to be friends until he admitted to me that “details are irrelevant” to him. That was a year ago. We exchanged obscenities and haven’t spoken since. :>)

Honestly, I don’t know what to expect. i want UNC to get the hammer but I feel as though I will be disappointed. We have seen time and time again UNC get a pass because they are UNC its the order of things. To now expect, that order to be broken is hard for me to wrap my head around. We all want it and it should come but I won’t believe it until I see it on ESPN.

  8. bradleyb123 11/17/2010 at 3:40 PM #

UNC might get a pass, but I think it will only be relative to what they SHOULD get. They should get something approaching the death penalty, but they won’t. But that doesn’t mean they will get off with nothing at all. They have unprecedented numbers in their scandal. They can’t get off with nothing. Can they?

  9. tann84 11/17/2010 at 3:51 PM #

I’m am of the mindset of anything is possible, expect anything therefore the emotional toll won’t be so high if you are in fact disappointed, if they do get the hammer – feel free to dance in glee….

Choppack: On whether UNC will pull itself from bowl contention this year, you can bet that will depend on what suits them best… and that is wholly reliant on what bowl they are in contention for. If it’s a crappy bowl, rest assured they’ll “pull themselves” in an effort to appease the NCAA… but if they’re looking at a trip to Atlanta or better I bet you a million dollars to a doughnut that they go in an effort to keep the fans paying for the renovation and maybe hold together that all-important “last” recruiting class before Armageddon.

  11. Prowling Woofie 11/17/2010 at 4:24 PM #

^ Any bowl games scheduled for South Beach ??? They’d have home field advantage…

    😉

  12. wolfacct 11/17/2010 at 4:34 PM #

The NCAA will have no choice but to sanction the ‘Holes. Within a few years there will be 4 major conferences with 16 teams, who will look at the NCAA and say “why do we need you.” This is an opportunity for the NCAA to show why they are needed.

  13. choppack1 11/17/2010 at 4:41 PM #

GA Wolf – I agree 100%. As I said on the forums – I see no evidence whatsoever that UNC wants to be anything but a football factory right now.

  14. coach13 11/17/2010 at 5:19 PM #

I’d just assume they go ahead and play a bowl game this year anyway. What, the tire bowl? Really? So what. That way innocent SR’s not punished.

I am more interested in crippling them in the next 3-4 years. And give anyone not proven to be involvled in the multiple scandals the option to transfer out free of charge along with the other penalties of no bowls, loss of scholarships, no TV, no shared revenue, etc…

ALSO on the issue of keeping Butch, if…IF UNC is on the fence about keeping him, winning this Saturday could help impact things in the end. The humiliation of the scandals topped with being swept by State during his entire tenure? They look like a bunch of dumbasses if they do keep him (not that they don’t already!)

  15. RabidWolf 11/17/2010 at 6:12 PM #

“I want them to replace him with the Les Robinson of college football coaches so they can toil for a number of years.”

    You don’t mean…you can’t mean….Mike O’Cain!?!?!?!?

  16. ppack3 11/17/2010 at 6:18 PM #

Wow. I wonder what that pre-game speech would be like. “Okay boys, let’s go out and win this game…to appease the NCAA! Remember, we are a team…a team that needs these fans to pay for the stadium expansion! Now, Let’s go get ’em!”

I honestly don’t know what the UNC coaches can say, at this point, to motivate these guys, other than, “We could still go to a bowl.”

My dream scenario is that we beat the Holes, and then the Dukies beat the demoralized Holes. Then, at 6-6, UNC gets left out of the Bowl picture all together. Remember, they don’t travel nearly as well as State fans, and we almost got left at home two years ago, if it weren’t for the ACC-unaffiliated PapaJohns.com Bowl picking us up. Now, the ACC has one less ACC tie-in than they did back then, even.

Maybe it’s just a pipe dream?

“Sucks for the non-cheating seniors over there, but it be what it be.

Would this be the same group that knew what was going on and didn’t say anything to anyone? Better to punish the players that are currently on the team, than kids still in high school.”

How do we know some or all of these didn’t receive illegal benefits? Cash is hard to trace. Slip the envelope under the door at night. You have to consider that the NCAA doesn’t have supenoa powers and probably only have uncovered the tip of the iceberg. Personally, just agreeing to go play for Butch and John Blake is proof enough for me.

  18. GAWolf 11/17/2010 at 7:55 PM #

PPack: You misunderstood my point, I think. If UNC gets a crappy bowl, look for them to say “we willingly pull ourselves out of the selection group although we’re bowl eligible (or we’re refusing the bid)” in order to look good to the NCAA. HOWEVER, if they get a decent bowl bid (Peach or better) then look for them to take it in order to appease the UNC FANS and donors to keep the money coming and to get the exposure to keep the recruiting class together. If it’s a crappy bowl (Boise) then it won’t help either of those ends so it’s selfishly beneficial for them “to take the high road” and bow out of the bowl bidding process.

Some of the most prolific posting to date…..very long and usually well thought out posts. Fascinating that Bob Lee is now being quoted here. Remember, Bob Lee is a humorist…..and it is things like this that make his job a little easier. Folks can relate to the HUMOR of the situation. He admits, in a later column, that he THOUGHT that BD was history and he (BL) is a friend of Ch. Thorp (no e)and NOW he thinks that BD might NOT be history….or not HISTORY by the Winter Soltice, as he originally predicted.

I think that the N&O is trying to increase circulation and also web traffic, so they can get a few tenths of a cent more per click from advertisers.

Lets hope the game lives up to the hype….

I really feel that TOB has more confidence going into this weekend. He seems MORE relaxed. Is NOT making the “we need to do X or we will not be victorious comments…” Great to hear him exude confidence AND wear a RED blazer.

It is clear the holes will get hammered, but their fans may just ask for the plate number on the truck that runs over them. This should set their program back 5 years. I will ask Holdie again, Mr. Chancellor: bring down those cranes.
