The annual Toys For Tots campaign will kick off at the Wake Forest football game

Fans attending Saturday’s Homecoming game are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the primary collection site in Fan Zone in the Dail Plaza between Carter-Finley Stadium and the RBC Center. Volunteers will be on hand to receive toys, preferably in the $10-15 price range, when Fan Zone opens at 11 a.m. until just before the 2 p.m. kickoff.

While all donations are appreciated, toys for toddlers ages 2-4 and pre-teen ages 10-12 are needed most.

Cash donations will also be accepted at all entry gates into the stadium.

GoPack.com article here. I can remember a few years back the Morgan brothers volunteering to take donations at a basketball game because they remembered how much getting those Toys for Tots gifts meant to them as kids. That always stuck with me.

The homecoming parade will take place on Hillsborough St from 6pm to 7pm, this Technician article has all your information.

And on a non-NCSU note, on the forums we’ve been discussing the ugliness of Oregon’s new basketball court, there has been discussions in the sports world of Oregon’s football uniforms, Bob Huggins’ gold suit and Rick Pitino’s Colonel Sanders suit. However Tom Hodges, the women’s basketball coach at Morehead St beats them all.

Have a great weekend, Go Wolfpack!!

Only NC State Can find a way To schedule a parade Practically simultaneously with the first basketball game of the year

On a more positive note … 1st game, new season!

    1. Let’s see a “team” on the court every game this year. No attitudes.
    2. Let’s see improvement every game
    3. Let’s see a team working as hard as it can every game – no coasting against any team, on any possession
    4. Let’s see the guys on the bench – whoever they end up being – be as much a part of our success as the starters. We need 10 guys playing hard and well every night. Depth has to be one of our strengths. It sets us apart from some more talented teams.
    5. Let’s be as good on the defensive end as we expect to be on the offensive end. Do the hard stuff as well as you’ll do the fun stuff.
    6. Let’s finally realize the much touted up-tempo game Sid has been talking about for years
    7. And lastly and in summary, realize the potential we think we see in you this year

GO PACK – It’s the beginning of a new day for Wolfpack basketball.

N.C. State vs. Tennessee Tech recap –

    Overview –

This is a team (N.C. State) that doesn’t have it’s idenity yet. It’s clear that in halfcourt offensive sets we still need to be an ‘inside-out’ team … That said, we could never really decide when to push, when not too, and who should be getting the shots.

Once everybody gets used to their roles and comfortable however, it’s clear that the pieces are in place for this to be a very dangerous team. I was very pleased that at the half Sidney clearly mandated that the ball be worked inside to Tracy Smith – who had only two field goal attempts in the first half and didn’t score. Tracy finished with 10 points and 8 boards as he was clearly the offensive focus (as he should be in halfcourt sets) in the second half.

    Highlights –

First and foremost, the freshmen were REALLY impressive for their first collegiate game. Brown is as solid as advertised, Harrow is flashy and fancy with some very impressive moves and ability, and Leslie was simply all over the court.

Leslie was far and away the best player on the court at times during the game – most impressive to me was his 6 blocks (most of which resulted in transition opportunities) and his running the court. A great debut from C.J. Leslie and he had a good postgame interview with Tony Haynes in addition to his efforts on the court.

Team chemistry and togetherness appeared to be there, though the effort appeared disjointed at times. Some of this I attribute to first game jitters and some to working out the kinks. Once everyone is comfortable in their own skin this could turn out to be a really well-oiled machine. The pieces are certainly there.

Gonzalez and Smith provided good senior leadership, which is vital to this team’s success. Javi in particular never forced the issue and was more than content to let the other pieces do the heavy lifting. Most impressive was how Javi took control of the game down the stretch. He has come a long way in his career and proved he knew how to salt away a game tonight. Javi was in complete control of the game and tempo in the last five minutes. This will pay huge dividends for us in games this season.

Team defensive effort was pretty good – we didn’t allow nearly as much dribble penetration as we used to allow in a lot of games. Aside from some minor issues, everybody seemed to follow their assignments and move their feet pretty well.

Scott Wood nailed a few long threes to help get Tenn Tech out of some troubling 2-3 zone sets at times … We’re going to need a lot more of this as I suspect we will see a lot more zone sets throughout the season.

Depth was clearly a factor as our waves of substitutions eventually wore down Tenn Tech. We have enough pieces now to really choose the style of play that fits us best for any particular game.

    Lowlights –

Rebounding is certainly a concern at this time. There are a few legit reasons why Tenn Tech got as many offensive rebounds as they did, but for the most part we allowed WAY too many offensive rebounds. This is an area that clearly needs work.

We looked a bit unsure and sluggish against zone defense – particularly when all the freshmen were in. Hopefully this will work itself out – we’ve got a lot of weapons to choose from now, but it still bears mentioning. The Syracuse game in particular will provide an interesting test and early season barometer for this team.

We got off to a really slow start, though hopefully this had more to do with it being the first game of the season with new bits and pieces more than anything else.

Lastly, we need to show more of a killer instinct. We were in control throughout the second half, but never really put the Golden Eagles away for good. Hopefully we’ll show more of a fighter’s attitude in the future.

Overall a pretty good first game and test. It was nice game to break the freshmen in to their careers and see how everybody works together. I suspect we will look better and more fluid as the early season wears on … Once this team decides what it wants to be (I hoping for something really aggressive) we could certainly go some places.

    Go Pack!

Anyone have a recollection of the last time we were at all effective against zone defenses? I certainly don’t…

  19. PapaJohn 11/13/2010 at 11:16 AM #

    wufpup76 – great recap, thanks

I think it’s going to take 8-10 games to figure ourselves out. Three new key players, TS at the 4, more uptempo pace – lots to adjust to.

  20. BJD95 11/13/2010 at 11:37 AM #

We won’t be able to tell anything about this team’s chemistry and mettle until they get punched in the mouth. Even in a down era, that always happens at some point during the ACC season.

But thanks so much for the in-depth analysis – it is much appreciated, and was significantly better than the fluff from this morning’s paper.
