It has been announced that UNC LB/thug Kevin Reddick will inexplicably be eligible to play this Saturday. Sadly, there’s not even any mention of DE/bigger thug Quinton Coples – who should be done for the season, including bowl game.
The best video of the catch and subsequent Reddick punch was shot by WTVD and can be seen here.
Let me explain further. Hole safety/general all-purpose asshole Deunta (“27akaTheHitMan”) Williams, previously suspended four games for improper benefits, apparently was blowing off some steam after going 0-for-his career against NC State. Discussing the Reddick incident – and an egregious late hit by Quinton Coples on Russell Wilson four plays earlier – Williams claimed his Hole brethren were retaliating for Wolfpack players allegedly spitting on them.
Not that you’ve seen much written about this topic. Fortunately, an eagle-eyed (eared?) SFN commenter brought it to our attention. We did confirm with a media member who was in the UNC locker room – Williams did in fact say it.
Now, I want you to go back (if you saved your game DVR) and watch the hit Coples put on Wilson, after picking up a huge 3rd and 19. Go ahead, I can wait. Ready now? Good. Watching live, I screamed very bad things about Coples at my TV, and felt ejection was warranted. The hit was at least 4 to 5 strides out of bounds, and Coples didn’t launch until he was 2-3 strides out of bounds himself.
With “Hitman’s” comments adding context, the hit is now clearly pre-meditated. Not only that, I see a pretty clear intent to injure. I also think it was no accident that Coples took his cheap shot when the penalty would only be 4 yards (half the distance to the goal) instead of 15. The fact that Reddick threw a punch 4 plays later (after a TD pass) only adds another layer of deliberate, pre-meditated conduct. And with this level of pre-meditation – including the stupidly admitted knowledge of a player involved in NEITHER cheap shot – how likely do you think it is that the coaching staff didn’t know anything?
It’s prefectly fair to hold Butch Davis (who should already be on his best behavior, but apparently is a slow learner) responsible for this type of headhunting. Additionally, Davis publicly criticized the officiating post-game, which earned Tracy Smith a one-game suspension last year.
Back to “Hitman’s” allegation. A stadium full of hostile patrons, a full officiating crew – and nobody else said word one about any spitting. Color me skeptical, at best. And even if it were true (in which case I would have expected TOB to take prompt, decisive action against such nonsense), it’s somehow a rational, proportionate response to (i) try to ruin a student-athlete’s professional career; and then (ii) punch a guy in the head? One of these days, they will pop off in the wrong place at the wrong time, and get their teeth kicked in.
These were not isolated incidents either. Â
Alert readers will remember the Donte Paige-Moss punch from their game with Miami this year.Â
If you want to see another Donte Paige-Moss punch, here you can see him take a cheap shot swing at Sterling Lucas after last year’s Wolfpack victory over UNC-CH.Â
Butch is building quite a program over there. It has the on-field thuggery and off-field problems of the “old school” out-of-control Miami teams. The parallels end there — those Miami teams actual won some games.
