Coples, Reddick, Davis Should Be Suspended

It has been announced that UNC LB/thug Kevin Reddick will inexplicably be eligible to play this Saturday. Sadly, there’s not even any mention of DE/bigger thug Quinton Coples – who should be done for the season, including bowl game.

The best video of the catch and subsequent Reddick punch was shot by WTVD and can be seen here.

Let me explain further. Hole safety/general all-purpose asshole Deunta (“27akaTheHitMan”) Williams, previously suspended four games for improper benefits, apparently was blowing off some steam after going 0-for-his career against NC State. Discussing the Reddick incident – and an egregious late hit by Quinton Coples on Russell Wilson four plays earlier – Williams claimed his Hole brethren were retaliating for Wolfpack players allegedly spitting on them.

Not that you’ve seen much written about this topic. Fortunately, an eagle-eyed (eared?) SFN commenter brought it to our attention. We did confirm with a media member who was in the UNC locker room – Williams did in fact say it.

Now, I want you to go back (if you saved your game DVR) and watch the hit Coples put on Wilson, after picking up a huge 3rd and 19. Go ahead, I can wait. Ready now? Good. Watching live, I screamed very bad things about Coples at my TV, and felt ejection was warranted. The hit was at least 4 to 5 strides out of bounds, and Coples didn’t launch until he was 2-3 strides out of bounds himself.

With “Hitman’s” comments adding context, the hit is now clearly pre-meditated. Not only that, I see a pretty clear intent to injure. I also think it was no accident that Coples took his cheap shot when the penalty would only be 4 yards (half the distance to the goal) instead of 15. The fact that Reddick threw a punch 4 plays later (after a TD pass) only adds another layer of deliberate, pre-meditated conduct. And with this level of pre-meditation – including the stupidly admitted knowledge of a player involved in NEITHER cheap shot – how likely do you think it is that the coaching staff didn’t know anything?

It’s prefectly fair to hold Butch Davis (who should already be on his best behavior, but apparently is a slow learner) responsible for this type of headhunting. Additionally, Davis publicly criticized the officiating post-game, which earned Tracy Smith a one-game suspension last year.

Back to “Hitman’s” allegation. A stadium full of hostile patrons, a full officiating crew – and nobody else said word one about any spitting. Color me skeptical, at best. And even if it were true (in which case I would have expected TOB to take prompt, decisive action against such nonsense), it’s somehow a rational, proportionate response to (i) try to ruin a student-athlete’s professional career; and then (ii) punch a guy in the head? One of these days, they will pop off in the wrong place at the wrong time, and get their teeth kicked in.

These were not isolated incidents either.

Alert readers will remember the Donte Paige-Moss punch from their game with Miami this year.

If you want to see another Donte Paige-Moss punch, here you can see him take a cheap shot swing at Sterling Lucas after last year’s Wolfpack victory over UNC-CH.

Butch is building quite a program over there.  It has the on-field thuggery and off-field problems of the “old school” out-of-control Miami teams.  The parallels end there — those Miami teams actual won some games.

Believe it or not NCSU88, I just did the same thing and sent it as an email to [email protected]

  2. MatSci94 11/22/2010 at 4:32 PM #

I said it on the forums, but I’d love to see Yow call out the ACC over this (privately if not publicly).

^^Can’t wait to see the compilation of the videos. Post that on You Tube and it will go viral with ABC/State fans; just like the Hilter/UNC video.

My favorite part of the video from theACC.com was the 2-pointer at the 4:33 mark.

Some of you guys may remember back in 1993 there was an ugly incident in the State v UNC game in Raleigh. Just before half a State DB met the UNC QB at the sideline – both running toward the sideline at the same angle, but from different directions (imagine a V with the point on the sideline.) The DB pushed the QB at the last moment, but the QB never changed direction as he fell forward toward the bench. The UNC bench erupted and surrounded the DB and you could see fists and UNC helmets being thrown at the State DB.

The State bench came across the field, but no fight occurred. The end result was a late hit flag on the DB PLUS ejection from the game. How the refs kicked our DB out of the game after the UNC players were seen hitting him with helmets being held by the facemasks was beyond me and I thought I was going to come out on the field. Replays showed the helmet hits on TV that night, but never again and no penalties were ever levied on the UNC bench or players.

To add to that lore, we went into half time ahead, but UNC was energized by the incident and came out ready to beat us in the 2nd half, which they did. It was Mack Brown’s first victory over State after 5 consecutive losses. It was the first of Mike O’Cain’s 7 consecutive losses. Plus, after the game, a UNC coach tackled one of our coaches as they ran to the locker room.

The conference simply chose to overlook the entire thing, even with video evidence, as if it was somehow justified. I have seen video footage of the brawl somewhere, but don’t know where to look today. That day was worse than anything that has happened since in the history of NCSU football IMHO.

great look at the fight.. what a thug the Reddick is and I still can’t see what Jarvis did to get ejected.. yes, he got up in Reddick’s grill, but Reddick pushed and threw a punch. What a thug.

O’Brien from his press conference today:

“I think the officials did a great job,” he said. “They’ve got control of the game. What I’m really pleased is, the last two years we’ve been punched (by UNC players). And our kids haven’t retaliated.”

As is his style, direct and to the point.

Honestly I dont think the hit on Wilson out of bounds was that bad. He hit him late and got a penalty, but I dont see anything out of the ordinary. The punch on the other hand by Riddick is horrendous. Williams was cellabrating the td and I dont even think he noticed Riddick. He bumped him in cellabration by accident, thats all and got punched. He shouldnt have been ejected. How many guys do the Heels get to punch before they are punished?

Here are links to screen captures of the punch by Reddick. 4 seconds that changed the game.

Oh, one only needs to watch the replay of the scerfuffle after the Spencer catch to see that it was none other than Paige-Moss who was coming into the scene late, but bowed-up and ready to scrap. See how he chest bumps an official as he attempts to do nothing but make matters worse. A good sport does not join the fracas puffed up and raring to go…a good sport attempts to separate the involved parties long enough for everyone to cool down (see Darrell Davis holding back Jarvis Williams).

We won and nobody was injured by their thuggery. They’ll get theirs one day. Give it 3-4 years and most of those punks will be in jail or on the streets.

  12. NCSU88 11/22/2010 at 5:37 PM #

I can’t seem to break down the WRAL video as well as the WTVD video. The WTVD photographer is visible in the WRAL shot. If some one can get a copy of that raw video from WRAL and WTVD, the stills should be pretty clear. Williams appears to definitely be in Reddick’s face, and the shove may have been warranted. The punch was clearly vicious and over the line, though.

“Some of you guys may remember back in 1993 there was an ugly incident in the State v UNC game in Raleigh.”

I’m pretty sure I was at that game – the UNC players were swinging their helmets like clubs. Was that also the game where a State and Unc coach got into a scuffle which resulted in one of them body slamming the other onto the ground (pregame or halftime) or was that another year?

  14. PackerInRussia 11/22/2010 at 6:06 PM #

bluelena69, I noticed the same thing. The two reactions by the teams were completely different. NC State players were trying to hold their guy back and get him off the field. UNC’s guys walk over ready to fight.

Also thought the same thing about the place on the field where the late hit occurred. Not a very large penalty for them in terms of yardage.

  15. newt 11/22/2010 at 6:10 PM #

Tell somebody that players have been suspended for less than that punch and that you think the ACC commish is biased because he is a UNC football player. They will argue that you’re just being a State fan.

    “So I’m biased, huh?”

  16. Phang 11/22/2010 at 6:39 PM #

WTVD had a great segment on “The Punch” on the 5:30 news. Don’t know if they’ll replay it at 6, but it’s worth a look.

  17. Wufpacker 11/22/2010 at 6:53 PM #

Heh, I love it. In the embedded video above the forearm shiver (from Paige-Moss) makes incidental contact with Franklin (#74 Miami) on his upper left arm. But that guy staggers and goes down like an oscar nominee. Dude’s got a future on the silver screen I think.

But it got the job done. Not sure if the ref was only waiting to see what happened or if he just wasn’t going to flag the hit, but as soon as Franklin’s knees start to buckle he reaches for the flag. Too funny.

Come on man…….Nobody on that team gives one rat’s ass today.
Underclassmen will remember about a week before the reunion in CF next year. They’ll find a way to take care of biz. Show me an incident where a coach has been suspended for anything in the ACC. Hewitt was reprimanded, but I can’t think of any suspensions.

How UNC treats thier own here will be interesting and if State fans want to call out the pervasive lack of integrity and sportsmanship of a select few at UNX when team sanctions don’t follow, more power to ya’ll.

“Show me an incident where a coach has been suspended for anything in the ACC.”

Spurrier was suspended for a game while at Duke, but that was due to his mouth, not an incident of a physical nature.

I think we are being a bit too tough on these guys. After 4yrs its about time they showed some fight. SCOREBOARD!!!!!!!!

Let us keep this thing between the lines gents. You can not attribute to them a lack of intelligence then point out that they are thinking about what they do. Coples is border line retarded. He should have never been admitted to unc or any other school in the unc system. To say that he was calculating when to get a personal foul is to give him some credit of linear thought.

    Be consistent gents, stay steady.

And yes, I urinated on every roll of that Tifsport bermudagrass before I shipped it to unc back in 2000.

After thinking about it for a while, I suppose I should retract my call for suspensions of the UNC players..In all fairness if that were to happen, we’d have to suspend Cowdog for putting “rocks in the tuba”!!!

  23. PackFanInLA 11/22/2010 at 10:22 PM #

boy – just as I started to type this, Rivers throws a beautiful pass right on target for about 60 yards. What a stud.

anyway – what I was going to say is that it was Raycom’s crappy camerawork. If that was an SEC game, there would have been a dozen crystal-clear shots of the stomp, the kick, the punch. There would be huge pressure on the ACC to suspend those guys. It’s all about public pressure. With nothing clear on tape… no suspensions (at least where UNC is concerned).

    … and TOUCHDOWN chargers!!!!

  24. TheCOWDOG 11/22/2010 at 10:38 PM #

That’s what I’m sayin’ ‘Stick. Players always have thier own way of taking care of what needs to be taken care of if they feel there’s something that needs to be taken care of.

Nine times out of ten, it ain’t in front of the whole world, too.

  25. baxter 11/22/2010 at 10:46 PM #

That tuba player was asking for it.
