Basketball season starts tonight!!!

Let’s all step away from the ledge for at least one evening and enjoy the start of basketball season tonight in Reynolds Coliseum.

Nov. 8, 2010

RALEIGH, N.C. –

Live Internet Broadcast | Radio Coverage

The NC State men’s basketball team plays its only exhibition game of the season Tuesday night against Pfeiffer in Reynolds Coliseum at 7 PM. Fans can watch a live broadcast on GoPack.com All-Access.

The game will also be available on the Wolfpack Radio Network. A full list of stations is available here.

The NC State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be sponsoring a food drive at the exhibition contest. Fans may bring three cans of food and receive free admission. For more information, click here.

Tuesday’s game is the first of two at Reynolds Coliseum this year. The Wolfpack will host USC Upstate on Dec. 11 at Reynolds.

Kenpom has come out with their pre-season predictions for NC State and I think it is a fair assessment of what might actually happen this season due to the very difficult ACC and non-conference games on this year’s schedule. Kenpom is predicting a record of 18-8 and 8-8 in the conference despite the Pack being picked 4th in the ACC’s pre-season poll. It is important for NC State fans to understand that we could be the ACC’s 4th best team even with an 8-8 record due to the uneven ACC schedule. Caulton Tudor mentioned the tough schedule in today’s N&O:

If the ACC basketball race pans out as handicapped, N.C. State will have to make progress the hard way.

On preseason paper, the Wolfpack will face one of the league’s most demanding conference schedules, probably the most demanding.

There will be two games each against Duke (the ACC’s preseason league favorite), North Carolina (picked to finish third) and Florida State (No. 5), as well as a home game against the presumptive second-place finisher, Virginia Tech. But the game in Raleigh against the Hokies could be offset by a single game against Maryland that will be played in College Park, Md.

Why go tonight besides the debut of Ryan Harrow, CJ Leslie, and Lorenzo Brown?

To check out the newly renovated Hillsborough St that was completed earlier this year and visit some local businesses on Hillsborough St that many non-students haven’t been to in years. Despite the talk that Hillsborough St. isn’t what it used to be, places like Players Retreat, East Village, Mitch’s, Two Guys, Amore’s Pizza, Porter’s Tavern, Sadlack’s are all great options for food and beverages before the game. The improvements to the streetscape look great, especially at night. Parking isn’t near as challenging as people make it to be as spots on Hillsborough Street are usually available. If not, then just try streets like Pogue, Vanderbilt, Clark, etc…all immediately north of Hillsborough St. Also, any NC State parking lot can be used after 6 pm and there are several on Hillsborough St itself both on the north side and the campus side.

Plus there’s a new videoboard (if you didn’t go to the Red Rally…)

We as a Pack Nation need to attend every game in full fashion, not just the UNC & Duke games. There were thousands of people trying to get into the summer league game. The team is assembled and ready. Get to Reynolds and cheer on the Pack!!!

I wish I could be there tonight, but work makes it impossible. We will make the Friday game though. Cannot wait to see some Wolfpack hoops with the new faces playing.

“We as a Pack Nation need to attend every game in full fashion, not just the UNC & Duke games.”

Agreed!! It would be great if there would be a “Cameron” atmosphere (sorry, but that’s the standard IMHO!) for every Wolfpack BB game, whether it be in Reynolds or the RBC!

And I DO think it can be done at the RBC if enough people show up and are very vocal, especially students.

While we’re on the “would be nice” topic, it would also be nice if we could have a balanced budget with no tax increases or service cuts, too.

Bottom line is that we have a gigantic arena (that’s too big for non-Duke/Hole game demand), that’s also off campus. It is what it is, and we are damned lucky that we get the attendance we’ve gotten, given the quality of the product on the floor.

Attendance will be up somewhat due to curiousity over the hyped recruits, but a boring cupcake game is still just that. And for any bump to be sustainable, we will have to actually play good basketball, not excite recruiting junkies.

I don’t think we have the kind of overwhelming talent that will outweigh poor coaching, so I’m not optimistic. We just won’t be quite as shitty as before.

Way to show support BJD. Love it. See you at the game.

^ But we’ll have a point guard, which should make things infinitely more watchable than the last couple years. That’s been the deal breaker of late for me. I’m just not going to waste my time watching a football team without a serviceable QB or a basketball team without a PG.

  8. old13 11/09/2010 at 5:33 PM #

^ Agreed. I’d just like to see the Wolfpack Nation establish a reputation like you-know-who for court intedation, no matter who the opposition is.

BJD95-Didn’t you want O’Brien fired after the Clemson game? Why such negativty? I bet before the season if I told you on 11/9 we would still have a good shot at the ACC CG in football you would have jumped at it.

Now you are bumming on the BB season. I have been a fan for 40 plus years. Every year though I still hope we exceed whatever expectations people(our fans, media, other fans) have. This team has a very good chance to make the dance. I ask you to support them until they prove you other wise. Trust me I have had years of disappointment when it comes to WP athletics.

    I don’t see it as a tough schedule…
no more so than the ‘usual’ schedule in the ACC (which is always tough).

But, I think it’s a tougher schedule for other teams this year, because we’re on it.

I’d love to be in Reynolds tonight but living in Charlotte makes that hard on a weekday. Planning on going to the 12/11 Saturday game in Reynolds. Lot of great memories from watching games in the “old barn”. We’d being yelling and stomping you could almost feel the building vibrate. It was electric especially when the noise meter peaked. No stupid thundersticks — just yelling, clapping, and stomping.

One time a visiting friend asked why we were booing our own player during the announcements. I said we’re not booing we’re chanting “GOOGS”. For the uninformed that was Tom Guigiota’s (sp?) nickname. Started out slowly but by his senior year he was a force to be reckoned with. Not dirty, just played hard.

Please represent us well with a large crowd tonight Wolfpackers, the new guys need to see what it was like back when Reynolds was our home and Reynolds deserves nothing less.

WOLF!!! — PACK !!! WOLF!!! — PACK !!! Hearing the cheering back and forth across the court. good times 🙂

I thought my comments were fairly measured. I certainly would love to be proven wrong.

Agree that the games will be much less painful now that we at least have a competent PG. The QB analogy is apt – watching a team operate without one is just grating beyond belief. Javi wouldn’t be bad in a 10-15 mpg backup role, and I would like to see him in a role where he can flourish.

^Thanks! I’ve got it streaming here in the thin cold air of the Rocky Mountains!

  15. JeremyH 11/09/2010 at 8:17 PM #

it’s amazing how much more fluid the offense is with harrow in there.

  16. JeremyH 11/09/2010 at 8:30 PM #

Howell is a good passing big man. Brown is making some freshman mistakes but has a good stroke.

Didn’t get to see the game, but I like the score, particularly if we’re going to actually play up tempo this season. Does anyone have any information?

Dang, when was the last time we broke 100?
